3 Inaugural On-Farm Stud Ram & Commercial Ewe Sale To be held at Aloeburn, Boree Creek on MONDAY, 25 th SEPTEMBER 2017 Inspection from 11.00am Auction to commence at 1.00pm INTRODUCTION by Dr JIM WATTS Aloeburn Poll Merino sheep have always been outstanding for growth and carcase traits. It comes from the Bond Corriedale genetic base set in place many years ago. I remember when I first started working with Roger and Anna Green about 25 years ago, I was presented with a golden opportunity to simply put good wool on a magnificent shape of sheep. This we have done by careful and methodical selection and breeding, and essentially in a closed flock. It has been a most rewarding and patient journey which continues now at full pace with Andrew and Jodie Green at the helm. So what have we actually done? We have changed the sheep from a taut skin on a plain bodied animal to a loose skin on a plain bodied animal. At no stage have we allowed skin wrinkle to develop. The loose skin is a direct indicator that the density and length of wool on the sheep has increased substantially. It tells us that the sheep have many more wool follicles. The loose skin weighs only 2 to 3 kilograms whereas a wrinkly skin weighs 8 to 10 kilograms. This is a substantial difference which gives the Aloeburn sheep a distinct advantage for fertility, survival and fitness. On the back of these genetic achievements, we now have Andrew and Jodie Green generating valuable data on birth weights, birth status and lamb survival of fully pedigreed stud animals. This is exacting work which requires patience and precision. It rewards us all who tap into Aloeburn sheep genetics more lambs, more often. This pathway we have followed is a pathway of continuing and quickening genetic improvement. We have a detailed knowledge of the skin and fleece biology of Merino sheep. We know what you can do to keep the balance of fertility, carcase, wool quantity and wool quality in place at all times. The sale will commence at 1.00pm. Commercial ewes will be sold under an Open Cry Auction. Stud rams will be sold in a Helmsman Auction. The sale will be conducted as GST exclusive. GST will be added to the purchase prior to invoicing. For your convenience, there will be a number of payment options including cash, cheque and EFTPOS. Should a ram prove infertile or become incapable of work within 12 months of purchase, the ram will be replaced or refunded. By comparison, May 2016 born ewes were shorn in June 2017 with 6 months growth, they cut 2.8kgs/head, 19.6 micron, Yield 66.5, SL 74, SS 51, sold 1,215c/kg greasy.
