2 Meet the breeders Koonik is a 21st Century Dohne stud run by Fiona and Darren Cameron, at Koonik Nurcoung in the West Wimmera of Victoria. Fiona has been involved in farming all her life, growing up on a commercial Merino and stud Angus property south of Hamilton. Darren grew up on a Wimmera cropping and sheep property. Fiona ran her own merino flock from the age of nineteen, registering a merino stud in As well as running sheep, the family, which includes three children, Duncan, Isobelle and Lily, runs a broad-acre farm producing wheat, barley, oats, canola, beans, lentils, vetch, clover seed and clover hay. Meat the sheep When Merinos were not achieving our goals we looked further afield. Dohnes ticked all the boxes because of their ability to produce high quality meat and white, soft, well nourished merino wool. Koonik Dohne Merino Stud began with the purchase of top stud rams and selected ewe genetics from Uardry and Macquarie Dohne Stud in We also bought stud ewes from the Uardry and Potari Dohne Stud dispersals. Since then we have grown at a rapid pace, having our first on-property ram sale in 2011 and achieving total clearance five out of the last six years. We have sold rams and or semen to all mainland states of Australia. We believe this is an excellent achievement from a stud ewe flock of 450. While we are not an old stud, our sheep have been put to the test - and passed - since 2009 with a range of extreme weather conditions. Our average rainfall is 450mm but we have experienced drought -with hot, dry dusty summers and we ve had bitterly cold winters and floods. Our Dohne sheep have also endured humid weather with no cases of fly strike.

4 We breed what our clients want Henry Ford told his clients they could have any colour in a T Model Ford, as long as it was black. That philosophy would fail miserably today and is not how we operate. Here at Koonik we listen to our clients so we can best meet their needs with our Dohne product. They have told us that 98% of their progeny (from Merino/Dohne joining) had typical Dohne characteristics of high lambing percentage and sheep meat traits. Client Education When they told us progeny were lacking in wool quantity and quality we responded with a renewed target in the wool direction. Our focus on skin texture, staple structure and handle is client and market driven. Using proven Dohne Sires over our elite wool Dohne ewes has insured the maintenance of Dohne meat and growth characteristics. Using MD070424, UD080786, UD and our Koonik bred KDS AKA the Dominator, selected for these qualities, we have met the demands of clients in the South East Australian market. Koonik rams have been sold to clients ranging from high rainfall regions to the pastoral country and this has involved our stud achieving more than 100 rams sold in each of the past three years, an impressive figure considering we first registered only eight years ago. At Koonik we host educational sheep related courses for our clients and interested livestock managers in conjunction with companies such as MLA, Practical Systems, DELWP, and Animal Logic. Over the past few years we have held the RamSelect, Bred Well Fed Well and Animal Nutritional workshops. Last year leading guest speaker, Jason Trompf hosted a lamb survival course and will be returning to Koonik with another relevant session to help our clients improve their profit margins.

8 Koonik takes the show limelight In 2016 Dohnes returned to the show ring for the first time in forty years globally with over 60 rams from four states contesting for top honours at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo. The breed used its combination of objective and subjective assessment - with both meat and wool judges presiding. We may have unveiled our striking lime green shirts but the Koonik ribbons were more of the red and blue hues. 10 Auction Action - On Property Ram Sale, Koonik Sold: 82/85 Top Price: $3600 to Simon and Anna Greene, Karingal Pty Ltd of Elmhurst. Average: $1834 Our show success translated to a stronger sale at Koonik, which saw the average price increase $645 on last year. We had ten new clients, twenty repeat buyers with a number of volume buyers. There was a total of 30 registered buyers. Our clients continue to look for the true dual purpose sheep, but also for a good cut and quality, white, well nourished wool. Volume buyers included Peter Rooney from Sovereign Hill Museum Association, Elaine who took seven to $3000, av $2386. The Winning family, St George, Queensland took seven Dohne rams, to $2750, for an average of $2107. Six rams went to Peter Gooch, Kyneton and five to the Hobbs family, Sunnyside at Clear Lake. Another three rams went to Brian Calderwood s Coolibar Dohne Stud, Tumby Bay SA for a top of $3250, av $3000.
