HON SECRETARIES Ms J.Blott, Mrs E.Knox. HON TREASURER Ms S.Nattrass. The Glanton Show Committee would particularly like to express our gratitude to the support we have received, over many years, from three people who have passed away since our last show: Major Robin Cowen, Denis Rough and Mrs J. Gardner. Major Robin Cowan s quiet support will be greatly missed. Denis Rough, a Committee member and keen gardener, well respected for his roses, was an enthusiastic exhibitor for many years; his advice to fellow gardeners will be sorely missed. Mrs Gardner, who gave many years dedicated work to the Committee, is also a great loss.. 5 Welcome to the 93rd Glanton Show I am delighted at the prospect of our Show for 2016, your Committee has worked hard to come up with excellent entertainment and we have the support of many first class stallholders keen to be part of the event. We have also managed to secure an extension of the car park, so that we can cope with parking a greater number of cars than last year when we simply overflowed, the first time that has happened. This year we have an additional field so you can rest assured that there will be sufficient space. The principal arena attraction will be Patanavac Gun Dog Trainers, who will give demonstrations of how they train those keen Labradors and Spaniels to recover game (of the artificial variety) it is a great pleasure to see the dogs so eager to work and so concentrated on their tasks, and so very unlike my own dogs! Other attractions will include pony sports, children s sports and activities, a classic car display (always a superb selection at Glanton), smallholders, dogshow, alpacas, hopefully a Fire Engine (if not needed elsewhere), there will be the hill race, the fantastic show tent with all the exhibits and a fine array of traders with delicious treats or great products to purchase. Re-upholstery and repairs of both modern and traditional furniture. Traditionally made upholstered furniture and curtains all made in our workrooms. Wide selection of fabric and trimmings. DIY supplies and foam cut to size. For old fashioned service visit our showroom on Coquetdale Trading Estate Amble Mon Thu Fri Sat For more information please contact: We won t have the traditional sheep dog trial this year as unfortunately the field is no longer available for it, but we will try to bring that back in future years. So don t miss out, superb value entertainment for all the family on one of the most attractive show grounds in the area and positively the friendliest show you can find. And don t miss our own version of terrier racing magical mayhem! Jon Radgick, Committee Chairman If you would like to have a stand at the show please contact Mike Paice (see pg 26) The picture for the children's colouring, Class 76, can be downloaded from the Glanton website The whole schedule can viewed on the website, and further copies of the entry form can be downloaded. Please note all details are correct at time of going to press but may be subject to change. 24 5

7 TOP TIPS - VEGETABLES They need to be clean, and to be fresh and tender. They should be unblemished, and have a good colour. Size isn t the most important thing - quality comes first. Groups need to be uniform in size, shape and colour. Peas and beans are better if presented on a background like a doily. Leave the bloom on the peas, and choose ones that are full and deep green. With beans look for straight, tender pods with no outward sign of the seeds. With onions go for firm, mature bulbs with thin necks. The best tomatoes are firm, ripe and richly coloured. Choose round mediumsized fruits with their calyces attached. Cabbages should be nice and fresh with a good shape and a solid heart. Trim them to one outside leaf. Collections of vegetables look better against a black background. TOP TIPS - FLOWERS Aim for flowers that are fresh and in peak condition, with no damage or blemishes. Groups need to be as uniform as possible in size, shape and colour. And don t forget, arrangement is always important in flower displays. With roses you want strong stems that are in proportion to the blooms, and flower heads that are not touching. Pansies, buttonholes and sprays look much better if presented on a display board. Perpetual Challenge Cup presented by Mrs V.Thomas will be awarded for the most points. No whips or spurs allowed in gymkhana events. Rosettes for the first five places. TOP TIPS - COOKERY SECTION Read the schedule carefully. If a number of items or size is specified then stick to it. Bread should be made 24 hours before judging. Don t use commercial tin liners - show more skill by lining your own tins. There should not be any cooling tray marks on the top of the cakes. Savoury scones should be cut out using a plain cutter and can be glazed with egg or milk. A fluted cutter is used for sweet scones. These are not glazed. A biscuit is normally rolled and cut out. A cake or round of shortbread should be about 12mm (1/2 inch) thick. Pieces of tray bake should be of an even size and shape with all four sides being cut sides. Pastry should be of an even thickness, evenly baked and if it is a tart or flan then the underneath should not be underdone. Jars and lids used for preserves should be plain, with no trademarks or names on them, as these contravene the Trade Description Act. If cellophane covers are used they also need a well fitting wax disc on top of the preserve. If twist tops are used these they should be new and do not need a wax disc. Lemon curd does not have a metal top. Chutneys should have vinegar proof lids. Glanton Hill Race Register from at the Secretary's Caravan start from the Showfield.
