14 My name is Thor and I lost my family and my brother because the landlord changed his mind about allowing pets. My mom was crying when she had to take me and my brother to the shelter, but they told her no also, and that they couldn t take us because there was a waiting list! There we all stood - my mom and her young son crying, holding onto two dogs and nowhere to go. It was a pitiful sight to behold! A kind man who had come to the shelter to adopt a dog took my brother. Another young mother who fosters for OCPAW took me, because her heart was just breaking watching the whole scene unfold. OCPAW is now helping me find a loving home. I was abandoned when I started showing signs of illness. I barely managed to survive with sporadic feeding by neighbors. Finally, someone rescued me. The vet discovered that I have severe hyperthyroidism and only weighed 5 pounds! I m a grand old girl, but I do not groom myself so I need daily brushing and a weekly bath. I also need medication twice daily for hyperthyroidism. There is also a cyst on my neck that has to be drained every 2 to 5 days. I m normally calm with other cats, but sometimes I get irritable and initiate a tussle. I do not like dogs or children and would do best in a quiet household. I m currently in a foster home and loving life. As it often happens with rescues in desperate condition, I m relishing the love, attention and the never ending buffet. 15 My name is Ivy and I'm such a happy girl who is eager to learn new things. I'm finding out people are not so bad after all. I was a little unsure at first. I love when my foster family loves on me and plays with me. I am discovering so many new things that I never knew before. Toys are my new favorite things and I love to play fetch the wubba. I also love my crate and go in there with no problem. I even go in there to hang out sometimes when I don't have to. It's like my own little mini house. I go outside for all my bathroom breaks and have not had any accidents inside. And to top it off - they found out I am FIV positive. Luckily my kittens were fine - but that left me with no place to live. Canines for Service launched a Power of 10 fundraising campaign on September 1, The goal of the 100-day initiative is to raise $60,000 the cost to train and partner two service dogs. Service dogs change a persons life with the gift of independence. The Power of 10 starts with 10 supporters donating 10 dollars each to Canines for Service. They, in turn, ask ten of their friends to do the same, who then ask ten more friends, creating a powerful wave of support and fundraising dollars. Canines for Service operates from a 5,000 sq. ft. of space on Old Dairy Road. The long awaited expansion has provided the opportunity to initiate a Veterans internship program teaching Veterans new job skills learning how to train service dogs for Veterans with disabilities. In the upcoming months, the program will expand again to offer a fee based learning opportunity for service dog training. Since bringing the Canines for Veterans program back to Wilmington in June 2015, we had been stretched to maximum capacity with little room for service dog training or to increase the number of dogs in training, offer more pet therapy classes and the aspects of daily business, says Rick Hairston, President and CEO.
