1 Hound Rescue News & Notes-September 2011 Dogs Gone Home August 2011 Lucille, now Lucy, adopted by Mickie Freebert, now Freebird, adopted by Amy & family Tuna, now Lucas, adopted by Sue Dear Friends of Hound Rescue, What a month it's been. First and foremost we hope you're all safe in light of the recent fires in the area. Please know that if you are in need of assistance with your beagles (or other pets) during this difficult time, we hope you'll reach out to us; we always say that once a dog is a Hound Rescue dog, it always is. If you need help now, know that we'll do what we can - we had many volunteers step up to offer assistance, which thankfully has not been needed thus far. We've taken in a few great dogs this month, really sweet temperaments, but unfortunately with considerable health issues. Sweet Margie came to us with heartworm and a suspected UTI or bladder infection, which turned out to be 11 kidney stones that required emergency surgery to remove - and the poor kid still needs heartworm treatment! And many of you may have seen dear Buck on Facebook - our shattered jaw case who also had surgery this week. Sad to say he's named for the buckshot the vet found in him, this boy couldn't be sweeter in spite of the clearly rough life he's led till now. Suffice it to say with these two dogs alone, our finances have taken a major hit; if you're able to donate, even a few dollars, toward their care, it will go a long way towards keeping us on stable financial footing. On a brighter note, we're definitely looking forward to being out all day at Dogtoberfest at the Domain on October 22, They're trying to get to 1,000 likes on Facebook, so go check them out over there. We still need help! If you can volunteer part of the day to help handle a hound or just man the booth, please let us know and we'll make sure you're in the loop as we get closer to planning our day. Regardless, we hope to see you all there! Thanks to everyone who adopted this month - as you can see August was a great month for adoptions! As always make sure 1 of 5 10/24/11 11:41 AM

2 Hound Rescue September 2011 Newsletter to check out our available dogs - lots of sweet dogs looking for their forever families. As always we appreciate your continued support. Chloe, adopted by Steve & Jenny Amy Smith Director, Hound Rescue Don't Forget Dogtoberfest is October 22nd! Rudy, adopted by JoyJean & family Join Our Mailing List! Hound Rescue Hound Rescue is a 501(c)3 organiza6on. Our mission is: To rescue hounds in danger of euthanasia from shelters To help hounds that have been removed from negleccul or abusive situa6ons To shelter rescued hounds un6l a suitable placement can be found To provide basic medical care and training to hounds to make them ready for adop6on To educate current and poten6al hound owners about these breeds To find kind, loving families for rescued, homeless, or abandoned hounds 2 of 5 Another Way to Help the Hounds by: Christine Alt Birthdays are always a special time of year as we celebrate growth, achievements and many blessings. For our family, it's a perfect reason for family and friends to come together and catch up for a momentous occasion. It's also a time of thankfulness, so this year for Delaney's 6th birthday, she wanted something different. We had a huge party but in lieu of 10/24/11 11:41 AM

3 Hound Rescue September 2011 Newsletter gifts for her, she wanted to give gifts to the puppy dogs of Hound Rescue. We became a part of the HR family 4 years ago when we rescued our precious DeDe. She came into our lives during the pain of losing one of our beagles. She brought so much joy and laughter and she knew we saved her, just as much as she saved us. But DeDe's life was cut too short by a blood disease, only giving us 3 years with her. We've missed her terribly, especially As you can see, Delaney, so for her birthday she said, birthdays are "Mom, I want to give presents for my very special birthday to the dogs." When I asked her what made her think of that she simply occasions in the said, "Because I love dogs and I want to Alt home help them. I miss DeDe." And so we celebrated her birthday with donations from our friends and family that included food, treats, toys, leashes, collars and gift cards that could be given to Hound Rescue to "help the puppies". Featured Dog: Bonnie Bonnie loves to lounge around the house Bonnie is a sweet girl who loves to go on walks and explore in the yard. She sleeps in a crate at night and loves to lay on her dog bed when relaxing in the house. Bonnie is good with other dogs, and cats too! She's really an easy going older gal who would love to find her retirement home! Visit all of our Available Dogs on our website. Another Hound Rescue Success Story! by: Mickie Bellah My first dog in 1965 was a female beagle. I've been in love with the breed ever since. First there was "Snoopy Joy", then "Casey J No Dammit Biscuits", followed by "Dixie Doodlebug" and "Jamie Sue" (a miniature beagle) and now Lucille, aka "Lucy". Every 3 of 5 10/24/11 11:41 AM

4 Lucy snuggling in her bed at her new forever home. one the best beagle ever! The 'comfort number' in my pack is four. I know, I'm a sucker for a hard-luck story, but four is good. Following the sudden death of my 14 year-old beagle-terrier mix, I delayed 20 months before bringing the pack count up to four, and along comes Lucy. She was worth waiting for. Even though I've checked the Hound Rescue site many times, this was my first official contact. I was impressed right off with the way the group presented the background and specifics on each dog. The application was very thorough, which I appreciate. It seems that I barely hit "send" when I received a response from Denise. A couple days later, Courtney contacted me. The home visit was spectacular. When Lucy saw the yard she smiled ear to floopy ear. I believe she covered every inch of it at a fast run! Everyone got along fine for a first visit. We took a vote and the result was a resounding "YES. CALL HOUND RESCUE NOW AND TELL THEM YES!" I picked up Lucy at Amy's, her foster Mom who had obviously taken good care of her. When she saw me, she recognized me from the home visit, which made me feel great. When we arrived back at Lucy's new forever home, the pack sent me the message, 'so she's really going to stay with us?' They spent a couple days setting boundaries and with that out of the way, everyone is doing fine. Lucy quickly fulfilled a big portion of her purpose for being with us: chasing and playing with my 7 year old dachshund who had gotten lazy just lyin' around. I shall always be indebted to Hound Rescue for the work they do to save these amazing four-legged friends.
