2 PawPrints Magazine's Cat Cover Model Winners Photos by: Michael Cline Photography Hey PawPrints readers! It s Charlie, the tender-hearted lion, reporting on our cover model photo shoot experience. Since Kelly and Diane from PawPrints and Mike from Michael Cline Photography were so accommodating and patient, I thought it would be best if I did all the talking this time. Since I am shy, our photo shoot took place at home to make sure I would be as comfortable as possible. I ll reluctantly admit that I was initially shaking like a leaf, but once mom placed me in position for pictures, I slowly calmed down. Of course, Checkers enjoyed every minute of being in the spotlight. Everyone said really nice, positive things to sister and me. They did some really silly things to get Chex and me to look at the camera: feathers, silly noises and faces, movements, toys, and treats. I can honestly say that we had a fun time and that maybe new humans aren t so bad after all. Kelly and Diane brought us a gift from Aunt Kerry s Pet Stop. I, personally, think it was the best part of being a cover cat. We have a new, soft pet bed and some amazing toys and treats, which we have already been enjoying. The catnip is purrfect! How did Aunt Kerry s Pet Stop know that it s my favorite? Overall, it was a great experience! Yours truly, Charlie and Checkers (and our humans, Kelly and Matt Lindsay)

5 Hello, my name is Lexi and I am a 3½-year-old spayed American Staffordshire/Pit Bull mix. I m a special dog who needs a special person to understand my personality. SOAR sent me to school to work on my social skills because I have been known to get testy with my kennel mates and cats. So I am looking for a home where I can be the only pet in an adult environment. This means there should be no other dogs or cats in the home. I was born to follow, you pick the activity: cardio stuff on the treadmill, navigating the agility course in the exercise yard, it s all one big treat for me! I am an extremely athletic girl who likes being around humans but I need stability and a firm handler. To find out if we are a match, please send an to director.soar@gmail.com or call to make an appointment to come for a meet and greet. I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge. URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! Hard to believe a handsome Walker Hound like me is still waiting for a family at the shelter, but it s true! My name is Buddy (A032649) and I m a 3-yearold boy who is already neutered. I am simply a SWEETHEART who loves toys, loves playing with other dogs and loves attention from humans. I also keep my kennel very clean, which suggests I m either crate-trained or house-trained. I ve tested positive for heartworms, so the compassionate and loving person who adopts me will truly be saving my life by having them treated. I ll spend the rest of my life thanking them and proving what a wonderful choice they made. But please hurry! Dogs arrive at the shelter every day and there s not enough room for us all. For more info or driving directions, please call Pender County Animal Shelter at or jhorton@pendercountync.gov. I am sponsored by PawPrints Magazine in loving memory of Nancy Foster. Her smile and her friendliness will be missed. Since then, I've made lots of cat and dog friends and have realized how much I like snuggling with humans and playing with toys and cat scratchers. I would love a home where I have humans to play and snuggle with while watching movies. I'd also love a chance to enjoy the outdoors every now and then. I LOVE hanging out in the open windows watching the birds outside while enjoying the sunshine. Are you the family I've been looking for? Call Wagon Tails Farm Rescue at for more info on ME! 11 Please call to adopt us! Adopt-An-ANGEL My name is Smokey and I'm happy to meet you! I m a very nice, 35 pound mix who is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and heartworm negative. My owner was put in a nursing home so now I must find a new home. I would be best in an adult-only home and can do fine with animals, but please separate to feed me if you have other pets in your home. Please call my foster mom, Sherry, at to meet me. My name is Sandy. I am an older gentleman with a wonderful personality. I seem to get along with everyone and everything. I am laid back and friendly and just looking for some love. I was found on the side of the road Nearby, a collapsible crate was found. It s doubtful that I was casually walking down the road carrying my own crate so my rescuers can only assume I was most likely dumped. Still, they searched high and low for an owner who may have lost me - just in case. They never found my family. So here I am, an older gent who is on the market again and looking for a NEW family who may consider taking me in. Come see me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at Seniors need love, too! My name is Jubilee and I'm 12-years young. I get along with everything. I've waited patiently - watching all the kittens get adopted throughout the season and hoping it's my turn for a home to call my own. If you are interested in loving me, please call my foster mom, Sherry, at My name is Sophie. I am the prettiest, most dainty little Tabby you will ever meet. I only weigh about 5 pounds. Even though I am good with other animals and kids, I prefer being the only pet. I am a quiet cat who is very submissive. I was terrorized in my last home by more dominant pets. Come meet me at PetSense in Wilmington. My name is Bruce and I m a 2-year-old amazing Pit Bull. I seem to do well with everyone and everything I meet. I am crate-trained and walk reasonably well on a leash. I am laid-back at times and can have bursts of playful energy, too. Please come meet me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at I'm Stella and it is very nice to meet you. I am a pretty, dainty, tuxedo kitty looking for a home. I was found as a stray and no one claimed me. I have been homeless for a little while now, so I am hoping to finally settle down and call some nice family my own. I seem to do well with other cats, but I am not sure of dogs yet. If you have kids, that's ok - I am not skittish at all. P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC April

12 URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! I ve been waiting for a family since February 3! Won t you please adopt me? No one can understand why I haven t been scooped up! I m such a friendly, affectionate boy, just 2-years-old and already neutered. Here s even more good news: there is NO COST to adopt me thanks to a special friend of the shelter. So please, hurry over and meet me! The shelter is open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Noon to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. Hello, there! My name is Brooklyn, and I am a 3-year-old Pit Bull Terrier girl. I came from a sad situation when I came to Paws Place, I was a mere 26 pounds. To put that in perspective, I am now a healthy 55 pounds! I am so lucky to have found myself in such a loving, caring environment, and I m looking for a family who can love me as much as my kennel family does! I don t take too long to warm up to people you can find me in your lap approximately 1 minute after meeting me. That s right I m a cuddle bug, but I also love to run and play and swim!! Please come out to the kennel and take a chance on me. You won t regret letting me into your heart! Call Paws Place at if you have any questions. I am sponsored in honor of all the people who lovingly care for the dogs at Paws Place.

My foster mom says I am a loving and loyal lap cat. She also said something about me being chatty. I really like my scratching post and mousey toys. I'm spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and FIV/FeLV negative. I d love to make an appointment to meet you (aka, you making an appointment to meet me). Adoptable cats/kittens housed at Pet Supplies Plus in Beau Rivage Shopping center (Adoptions by appt.) For the latest kitten additions, check out To meet any of our cats or kittens in their foster home, info@all4cats.org or text All 4 Cats holds adoption events at the PetSmart in Monkey Junction on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. My name is Amara and I m almost 2-years-old. I am a polydactyl Hemingway cat. You should see my toes! I am as sweet as can be, I m very friendly and curious but I need extra time to warm up to other animals. I m a petite brown Tabby who raised 5 kittens but now I m ready for the quiet life. I chirp and insist on ear scratches multiple times per day. I am spayed, vaccinated, tested negative for FIV/FeLV, and microchipped. Hello! My name is Roman and I am just 7-months-old. I'm a sweet albeit shy boy. I like a quiet household. I'm ok with friendly cats and calm dogs. Kids are ok too as long as they aren't too loud. I like smaller spaces. Treats are a must. I will come when the treat container shakes. I am neutered, vaccinated, FIV/FeLV negative, and microchipped. My name is Oregano and I am 3-years-old. It looks like I rolled in some Oregano. Haha! I m mostly white with some grey and brown Tabby patches. I'm super friendly, laid back, and easy-going. I am mostly blind, probably due to a past infection. The vet says I am healthy and ready for a forever home. I'm ok with other animals as I don't pay any attention to them. I would need a gradual introduction to my new home and new furry family members because of my blindness. I am neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and FIV/FeLV negative. My name is Tiff and I m an adorable 7-month-old Tuxedo cat. I am very friendly and love to play with toys. I did test positive for FIV and it is believed that it was passed on from my mother. I have been in a foster home since I was a couple weeks old. I have not been sick. I still have hopes that the antibodies from my mom will pass (I will be retested soon). FIV+ cats can live with other friendly, neutered, indoor cats. The key is a healthy diet and regular check-ups. I am spayed, vaccinated, FeLV negative, and microchipped. You can meet me by appointment. My name is Georgette and I just turned 1-year old. I am a Tortoiseshell girl with a spot of white sweetness. I have nerve damage in my left front paw from an old injury as a baby but I run around and play like any kitten! I love attention from people, but not so much other cats. I am ok with friendly cats who give me space. I will need a slow introduction. I love to hunt and chase toys, play hide and seek, but also enjoy some relaxation time. I would fare better with no small children in a home with lots of love to offer. I am microchipped, spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and FIV/FeLV negative. I can be met by appointment. Visit us at & April

14 I m Peewee and I grew up in Florida. Unfortunately, the first 8 or 9-years of my life there involved me living in a cage at a breeder facility with my mom and sister. Rescues jumped in to help my family, but I was left last because I am deaf. You see, I was born deaf, so I have known no other life. I live in Wilmington with my foster sister and brother Jacks. I can be mellow, or crazy. I show my excitement by doing zoomies and turning in circles. While I am shy, some days I get brazen enough to steal kisses. Treat time is my favorite! I know to run to my crate and jump inside. I stay there beside my friends while my foster mom works. At night, I sleep on my bed where I can see her. I like knowing she is nearby! I would not do well in a home with children or large dogs. I need a fun, goofy canine friend my size, and a pretty laid-back home. I don't like seeing other dogs when I am on a leash and sometimes the vet scares me. But my foster mom says I make her laugh and she loves me to pieces. She is sure you will, too! Please call Russell Rescue Carolinas at to leave a message, mcbburton@alumni.unc.edu or visit to adopt me or to see other Jack Russell Terriers looking for loving homes. I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you! Happy Easter! Remember, don t share chocolate Easter Bunnies with your fur-babies. 17 Please call to adopt us! CAT: Cat Adoption Team We re at Petsmart 7 days a week. I may look familiar since my twin brother, Ebony, was in last month s PawPrints! Now that Ebony has found a new home, it s my turn! I m Spitfire, a handsome, shy and loving teenage boy. As a mini black panther, I will need to be held and petted every day. I've come a long way since I was a baby and I'm now the perfect age for adjusting to a new family. I will most likely grow into a tall, lean and sleek cat. I m fully vetted, so come meet me at the adoption center! I m Emma, an 8-month old girl, and this is my 2-year-old Mom, Elsa! We are the most adorable duo you ll ever meet. We love laser lights and will amaze you with our vertical jumping skills. We two fuzzy Calicos not only look alike, but we live together, play together and snuggle together. We are so very loving and have been homeless for far too long. We are so deserving of a forever home. I m Poppy, pictured on the far left, and next to me is my gray and white brother. His name is Nutmeg! We also have a sister who is not pictured, but she is just as sweet and adorable as us! At just 10-weeks-old, we are a lively, loving and cuddly family of baby kittens. We were rescued from a local shelter along with our beautiful Mama, Rosemary, who is also pictured on this page. Like all of Cat Adoption Team s precious kittens, we are superplayful, very affectionate and we love our people. We are growing fast, so please visit us soon! I m sweet and snuggly Rosemary, a 1 to 2-year-old mother cat who came from a local shelter with my beautiful little family (including Poppy and Nutmeg, pictured at bottom left). We all share the same snow-white whiskers and medium length silky fur. I m a loving mom who plays, grooms and naps with my kittens. I m so kind, gentle and deserving of a family to call my own. Please consider adding me to your own family, I will always be thankful! Hi, I m Clara! I m an 8-month-old girl with a bobtail and beautiful Tabby markings. I m a well-mannered kitten who can be a bit shy at first, but I warm up quickly and love attention. I get along great with other cats (especially my brother Sebastian, not pictured). My toys are packed, so I m ready to go home. How can you resist my sweet little furry face? LOVERBOY ALERT! I m Toby, a big snuggly teddy bear. At just 1-year-old, I m a stunningly handsome boy with a white face, whiskers, chest and paws, but look at my gorgeous eyes! I love nothing more than to sit next to you and purr. I m a gentle young cat who loves lots of attention but I m also a simple guy who is just as happy to perch on a box than on your couch. I am neutered, vaccinated, litterbox-trained and well-loved. Please consider adopting me - I promise you won t regret it! Wilmington, NC April

18 My name is Donnie and I am a young male cat. I am mostly white, with some splashes of black. I am calm and quiet and as sweet as can be. I do well with cats, dogs and older kids and am completely litter-trained. I would love a nice lap to sit on so I can watch television with you. You can come find me at PetSense in Leland. For more information or to adopt me, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at or visit I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you! URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! Why is a familyfriendly girl like me sitting at a shelter? My name is Bella (A033017) and I have so much love and happiness to give. At just 4-years-old, I m an Aussie/Coonhound mix who is already spayed. The shelter workers say that I appear to be housetrained, and I also play well with other dogs. As for my personality, I m so VERY SWEET!! In more good news, I was tested for heartworms and the test was negative! It s just not right that a healthy, affectionate, trained girl like me be homeless. Won t you please hurry over to meet me? You see, dogs arrive at the shelter every day and there s not enough room for us all. The shelter is open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Noon to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. 19 Please call to adopt us! Hello! I m a lynx-point Siamese mix who is just 2-years-old and my name is Mimi. I love to talk and I have lots of stories to tell you. You see, somehow I ended up out on my own. Luckily, I was picked up by Animal Control. That was pretty scary but the people from Cat Tails came to get me. Now I m in their rescue program. Then, well I m not sure. Could you help me write the next part of the story? Cat Tails I got here just a little ahead of the flood the kitten flood! Soon there will be lots of us but right now there aren t many kittens at all. I m Carrot and, naturally, I m orange. Most cats don t have very noticeable eyelashes but mine are magnificent. You ll be jealous! I have 3 brothers and sisters and they re all cute, but I have the eyelashes. Come and see! I m Matilda. I m a 4-month-old, long-haired, black kitten. I have lots and lots of energy. I need all kinds of toys to play with and plenty of room to run. And I m an absolutely fearless jumper! But when I m finally worn out, I want a warm lap where I can curl up for a nap - until it s time to go, go, go again. Do you have a lap with room for a kitten? I m already spayed and vaccinated. My name is Panda and I m a 2-year-old girl. I m mostly white with some brown Tabby markings. My fur is medium length but my most outstanding feature is my long plume tail. If you adopt me, I would love to walk around your home making my little happy squeaks and waving my beautiful happy tail straight up in the air. Tiffany Shadow We are a bonded pair of sisters who have always been together and we really want to stay together. My name is Tiffany and I am black and this is my sister, Shadow, who is gray. We were adopted when we were small but recently returned because our person has to travel so much. We have shiny, smooth coats and big green eyes. We re friendly and sweet and we re both front declawed. Please give us the chance to be part of your family. Oh, no! St. Patrick s Day has come and gone and I still haven t been adopted. My name is Flynn so I must have a bit of the Irish in me and I was hoping that I would have a loving, forever home by now. I m almost 1-year-old, I m black and white and I have half of a mustache so you can recognize me. Hopefully, I ll have a home by Easter Beach Drive SW, Ocean Isle Beach, NC April

I enjoy the company of other cats and truly love people, but I haven t yet had the chance to meet children or dogs. My favorite thing (besides my food bowl and treats) is kisses on my face. I was rescued by a kind shelter who realized I needed a little more time to find my furever home. If you want a generous sized, loving armful then I am your guy. I am neutered, up to date on my vaccines, about 2-years-old and ready to be all yours! Please call for information about adopting me. I am sponsored by Sharon Harmon and Barbara Blandine. Thank you! Hi, I m Nova. I'm 2½-years-old and weigh about 60 pounds. I'm looking for a loving family to adopt me forever. I'd love a home with a backyard where I can zoom around and play with sticks! I'm very sweet and cuddling on the couch for hours on end is one of my all time favorite things. I am smart and trainable and will work for treats. I am also crate-trained and house-trained, but I may have some separation anxiety at first when my humans put me in the crate. But don't worry, it will get better. I love walks and I promise not to pull on the leash much if I have a proper harness on. I'm good at riding in the car and I love looking out the car windows. Sometimes I even try to worm my way into the front passenger seat - everyone needs a co-pilot right!?! I do well with kids but I can be clumsy and headstrong from time to time. I would thrive with a strong assertive leader who can guide me through a proper decompression period - decompression is best and it really will help me settle in nicely to your home! Since I did not receive a lot of socialization at a young age, I would really benefit from some exposure to friendly dogs. I don't trust cats - do you blame me?! I love my foster family but I know that there is a home out there that is a better fit for me. I hope it's yours! For an explanation of our adoption process, application, and fees, info@mpbf.org, visit us online at mpbf.org, or give Merit Pit Bull Foundation a call at PITT. I am sponsored by Robyn Davis in loving memory of Duncan.

It s true - I m fluent in both English and Spanish and I know some commands in both languages! My name is Apollo and I m a handsome Husky mix, about 14-monthsold. I m a playful and friendly 65 pound boy. My previous family says I like other dogs, but I ve not yet been around cats. I m also neutered, vaccinated and ready to go to my forever home! My name is Fate, and I m a petite Silver Tabby girl. I m new at the shelter and still a little perplexed about being here, but I m settling in, as you can see from my photo in the cat bed. I really enjoy attention from humans as well as gentle pets on my fur. I once lived in a household with older folks so I m used to a quiet, relaxed household. I m also spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Let s meet and see if I m the one for you! Oh boy, I m so ready to be a new family member! My name is Mike and I m a 4-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix who enjoys attention and human companionship. I ve been friendly to all the dogs I ve met, but I haven t yet met any cats. 28 Look at my gorgeous blue eyes! I am told by the humans they think I am a Siamese or Snowshoe mix, but I am all cuddles and love! My name is Rocky Baby and I was rescued from a hoarding situation. I was well cared for, but there were just too many of us. A kind shelter took me and many of my kitty friends in to help us out. I am about 3-years-old. I have the softest fur and Bahama blue eyes that you can get lost in. I am very friendly and I like other cats, but I haven t yet been introduced to children or dogs. I have been neutered, vaccinated, and I am FIV and Feline Leukemia negative. Won't you give me my dream of a new home? Please call my friends at for information about adopting me. I am sponsored by Sharon Harmon and Barbara Blandine. Thank you! My name is Felix. You might be asking Why do I see a mostly-boxer with a Basset Hound Rescue? Well, that s a long story. You see, my unlikely roommate Oscar the Basset Hound and I arrived at the Carolina Basset Hound Rescue (CBHR) at the same time. We were reported as a bonded pair, but as it turns out, we are not quite that close and I am just fine in my new foster home. I guess we were somewhat unlikely companions, just like the other Oscar and Felix. I have a lot of energy and like to play catch and fetch. Compared to my current Basset roomies, I am quick. Even though I am faster and bigger, I am gentle with them. Honestly, I think they look funny and need to grow longer legs. I really like my chew toys and I understand toys are for chewing and other things are not. I also know how to sit and lay down on command. My foster family has really helped me with going outside and using the doggie door. My leash-training is going very well and I am a great guy and full of life and love. I promise to sleep through the night, behave myself, and be a great addition to your forever home. Why don t you give the CBHR a call? If you are interested, please call or visit our website at Also, we are always short on foster homes! If you have ever thought about fostering, please contact CBHR for more details. I am sponsored by Atlas and Bonnie Mayew. Thank you!

29 Onslow County Animal Services Call or or to adopt! I m a sweetheart named Maggie ( ) and I m not sure why I m in this strange place. The people here are nice and love my cuddles, but the kennel is a little bit loud and lonely. I wish someone would come along and bring a gray-muzzled lady like me home and surround me with love. I m a gentle girl and would love to rest my head in your lap. It appears that I m house-trained and though my back legs don't work as well as they once did (I m a little bit wobbly), time has not slowed my happy little Boxer tail. Because I am 12-years-old, I would appreciate a stress-free home where I can soak up love, curl up in a comfy bed and stretch out in the sun by my human's side. I deserve a home. Hello, my name is Dutchess ( ) and I first came to Onslow County Animal Services as a tiny kitten. I was adopted out but returned to the shelter years later because I was feeling overwhelmed by the new dogs in the home. I am playful and talkative, but would definitely prefer a quiet home where I am the only pet and can soak up all my family s attention and have the time I need to become comfortable in my new home. I was certain that I had found the perfect new family with no other animals. They were very excited to shower me with all their love. Unfortunately, a family member was allergic and they were heartbroken to have to return me. I am so very deserving of a forever home and I just know that my perfect family is out there somewhere. It has been over 3-months that I ve been in limbo and waiting for my happily ever after. Maybe my perfect person is you! Hello everyone! My name is Frisco ( ) and I would be very happy to meet you. I m a 3-year old Rottweiler and Hound mix who is a one-of-a-kind boy. While I have the markings of a Rottweiler, I think I possibly have some Bassett Hound mixed in. I am 65 pounds of love and I adore meeting new people and getting lots of attention. I love going for walks, getting ear scratches and giving kisses. I am very playful with dogs and did not show any interest in cats when introduced. If you are looking for a larger companion (who thinks he s a lap dog), then I m the guy for you. I would love a family that will have lots of time for play and adventure. Life is meant for living and having fun. My name is Ellie ( ) and at 2-years-old, I m not much more than a puppy myself. I came to OCAS with a litter of little ones. I was a wonderful mama to my pups, but they have all been adopted into homes and I m left wondering when my happily ever after will come. I m a calm and gentle girl who loves treats and being petted. I am house-trained, great with kids and good with cats, too. If you are looking for a smaller companion with a big heart and lots of love to share, give me a chance. I m a 1-year old Hound mix named Daisy ( ). I m an active girl in search of a family who can keep up. I love to run and play and need a home with a big fenced yard and humans who have the time to keep me active and happy. I love my people (especially children) and I m a friend to everyone I meet. I am house-trained as well. I would not do well in an apartment or in a laid-back home. Boring! If you are looking for a fun and loyal friend to join you in life s adventures, I may be the girl for you! 244 Georgetown Rd., Jacksonville, NC April

My wonderful foster mom saved me and is helping me with another chance at life. Could you find room in your heart and home for me? I have my bags packed! I m a dog-loving cat! It s true. In fact, I m the official Dog-Tester at the shelter. How does that work, you wonder? Well, In order to determine how well a dog gets along with cats, I m sent into action (with supervision, of course) to see their reaction. It doesn t bother me at all because I m happy to be around dogs - I even prefer them to cats! My name is Magic, and I m a 2-year-old boy who is neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I m also absolutely gorgeous with my feather-duster of a tail, ebony coat and silky dark hairs curling out of my ears. Please call Pender Humane Society at and tell them you re on your way to meet me! Sponsored in memory of Milo, the big black dog who stole our hearts! They call me Checkers Chex (tortie) and this is my brother, Charlie (orange). Charlie is shy so I m going to do all the talking. My parents adopted us from Cat Tails at a PetSmart event. Mom says it was love at first sight. We love our parents so much because they adopted us together even though we both have Cerebellar Hypoplasia, which means we are wobbly. Our cerebellums are underdeveloped, so that impacts our coordination and movement. Charlie can jump and is athletic, but I can t jump well and usually have difficulty making my back legs move the right way when I m moving faster. That s okay though, I m an expert climber. We fall frequently and my parents always say that we are not graceful, whatever that means. Sometimes I have trouble in the litterbox, and I might stumble and make a big mess, but Mom never complains even though I do when she cleans me. I ve been told I m spicy, but I ve also been told that I m sweet. Charlie is always easy-going and calm, well, except when new humans are around or he hears unfamiliar sounds. My parents call him the tender-hearted lion. Anyway, Mom loves me so much that she even added new decorations (steps) to help me access things around the house. Brother likes to use them, too. Since my parents adopted us, they tell us how much they love us and say that we ve added a lot of love, joy, and energy to the family. Oh, and we ve added beauty. They say that I am gorgeous and that Charlie is handsome. My parents always say how proud they are of us when we fall, but get right back up and try again. They cheer us on when we do something, that is difficult for us, successfully. They are our biggest supporters. My parents help us learn skills if something might be challenging and have modified things around the house to help us be successful. Because of my parents love and support, we have great confidence and good self-esteem. So, it s only natural that we think we should be the PawPrints cover cats. We want to represent all the cats with special needs who deserve to be adopted to great homes. Wink Submitted by: Kirsten Jones This handsome little boy is Wink. Wink had a rough beginning in life. He was born with only one eye, as well as congenital kidney disease. Then at 12-weeks, he was dumped in the Leland Walmart parking lot. I found him wandering between cars at 11pm on a Sunday night. He came right up to me. I took one look at this dirty, skinny little kitty with only one eye and an obvious respiratory infection and knew I had to help him. He did not protest when I scooped him up and put him in my car. He purred in my lap the whole way home. The most amazing thing about Wink is his personality. After all he had been through, you would expect for him to be withdrawn and scared. Not Wink! Wink is the most loveable, outgoing kitty I have ever met. He doesn t let anything slow him down. He plays and runs around, always with his little head tilted to one side. Wink has never met a stranger, be it a human or another kitty. He greets everyone like they are his new best friend. He even jumps in the vet s arms and insists on some cuddling before his exam. What he does best, though, is comforting my other foster kitties. He always seems to know when one of them needs a playmate, cuddle buddy, or just have the top of their head washed. Shy ones even come out of their shell a little when Wink is there to play with. Wink inspires me every day. This little guy lives every day to the fullest and never lets anything get him down. With only one eye, jumping was difficult, but he never stopped trying until he mastered it. He doesn t seem to know that he is any different than the other cats. He is a shining light in my life, which is why I call him my Winkle Twinkle Little Star April 2019

37 Snowball* Submitted by: Kelli Kerkhoff The cat we fostered, bottle fed, and who ended up adopting my son as his boy eight years ago passed away unexpectedly in It was devastating to us, and we could never figure out a good time to adopt again. We had other pets, but none my son could call his own. After Hurricane Florence, we knew there would be a lot of cats and rescues needing help, so we contacted Cat Adoption Team to see if they had any kittens available. They asked if we would be willing to foster a litter and then pick one to keep. We said yes! My sister and I drove to get an orphaned litter of three the day Interstate 40 opened, and I drove back as she fed the three little starving sisters in the front seat. They were skinny, dirty, and scared. Over the next two weeks, they grew, ate, slept and played. They were named Snowball, Daisy, and Gracie. We had cat therapy sessions with our friends and neighbors, since so many were stressed out from the hurricane, and holding kittens just makes you happy. Snowball and Daisy were the smaller sisters, and after a few weeks, they got really sick. I thought we were going to lose them both from a bacteria or virus. Thankfully, with a lot of TLC from us and the wonderful rescue, both recovered, and I knew we were meant to keep them in our family. We just couldn t pick one, and they needed each other. Gracie had already been adopted by my sister, so she lives down the street with three cat brothers. Snowball and Daisy play with the dog and other cats we have, and they made a difficult time a little better and a little easier to deal with. Snowie has changed our family for the better. She is a reminder that, even in the most difficult time, you can reach out and help others. She is a symbol of love and hope, and they all brought us so much happiness just when we needed it. We turned a CATastrophe into a blessing for us all. Snowball s picture is one of my favorite kitten pictures ever, and I think it would make others happy by seeing it. She s chill, happy, and adorable. Feature Story Milo Submitted by: Izzy Di Norcia I adopted Milo from New Hanover Animal Shelter on October 10th, 2017, two days after Hurricane Matthew. Quincy, our beloved Persian mix, had just passed away from old age. Our family was heart-broken. Reluctantly, my dad made me go to the shelter. After looking at all the cats at the shelter I decided to hold Milo. I instantly fell in love! He is so adorable. My life has changed because he is a one of a kind cat. I never thought I would know a cat that is always purring, happy, and super active all the time. He should be on the cover so he can spread his one of a kind joy! Flynn* Submitted by: Rachel Miller Flynn is a seal point rag doll rescue from Washington area humane society in Pennsylvania. Flynn has changed my life in so many ways. He s feisty but loving. Aloof but needy. I have never had or met a cat with so much personality. He loves to drink from the faucet and nibble on your fingers. I believe Flynn should be on the cover because you don t need to spend $1,000 for a purebred pet when there could be one waiting for you at your local shelter. Thank you to everyone who saved a life and entered our contest! Please check out the May issue for the Dog Cover Model Winner and Runners-Up! April

39 Please call to adopt us! SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) Hello, I m Tulip! I moved to SOAR from Second Chance Pet Adoptions in Raleigh, where I twice tested positive for Feline Leukemia (FeLV), but they don t have a house like SOAR does where I can freely move about with other FeLV+ cats waiting for someone nice to adopt us. So here I am, gentle and sweet, and hoping for that big break. I ll be a wonderful companion for someone who is willing to give me a chance. Want to get in shape for Spring? How about some cat yoga? I'm Inky, a very sweet boy, just 2-years-old. I love to roll and stretch and would be a perfect yoga partner! I also love to sleep and play if that's more your idea of fun. I m a total love bug and I know that being held is awesome. In fact, cuddling is one of my favorite things to do with a human! I do need to let you know that I am FIV positive, but it s really not that big of a deal! Cats with FIV can live just as long as other cats. Find out more about FIV online, talk to your vet or talk to my pals at SOAR. I m a wonderful boy, please don t pass up the chance to visit and get to know me. I ll be glad to show you my yoga moves and my cuddling skills! Cuddle here! I was taken to SOAR after having been found in a barn in Whiteville with my 3 sibs. They have since found homes, but I am still waiting. I am an affectionate boy, though I can be a bit shy at first introduction. When I m ready to drop my guard, watch me roll over for all of the pets you can muster. Don t even try to outlast me. And don t be offended if I balk at being picked up - it s just not my thing right now. Look for me in the big open room in back of the cattery. I have been assigned to keep the SOAR veterans in there on their toes. What a story I have! I m Minnie and I came to SOAR from a Duplin County animal rescue where I was abandoned with my 7 kittens. Yes - 7! And to top it off - they found out I am FIV positive. Luckily my kittens were fine, but that left me with no place to live. However, the wonderful folks at SOAR had a space for me! I m a sweet girl, a little over 2-years-old, up to date on shots and spayed. I need to live inside as the only cat or with another FIV cat. Other than that - I have no restrictions! Well, I m no Spanky, Darla or Alfalfa, but I am quite the Little Rascal just the same! Everyone around here seems to agree that one thing I am for sure is totally cute! I m an orange Tabby boy who tested positive for FIV, but that doesn t make me any less cute or any less capable of enriching your life for possibly many, many healthy and happy years. Find out more about FIV online, from your vet, or call SOAR at I want to grow up as part of YOUR family! 3376 St. Charles Place Southport, NC April

40 Hello! My name is Veronica, and I am a very sweet, but shy, young lady. I was rescued from a dog-fighting ring, so hopefully you can understand why I am a little fearful of humans. My friends at C.A.R.E. and Atlantic Animal Hospital are helping me get over my fear by being very patient with me and rewarding me with lots of treats! I'm hoping to find a family that is willing to continue working with me to help me get over my fear. I recently completed my heartworm treatment and am so happy to be able to run and play with new doggy friends! I am very loving, and I'm approximately 2-years-old, so I m looking forward to spending the rest of my life with a family of my very own! Call or carewilmington@yahoo.com for more info or to submit an application for my adoption. I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.). Donated Yarn Helps Animal Shelter Pets Comfort for Critters is in desperate need of yarn to continue to make free comfort blankets for 200+ animal shelters in the US. They can only use 4ply yarn, but if you have a partial skein left over from a project, or a dozen you never got around to using, they can put it to good use! Comfort for Critters creates free hand-made blankets which are donated to comfort animals living in animal shelters. While these pets await adoption, the blankets provide a comfortable bed year-round. When they are adopted, their blanket goes with them, providing something familiar as they adjust to their forever family. So far this year they have already donated almost 4,000 blankets, and so now they need to restock their supplies! Since these blankets are shipped free of charge to the shelters, their monthly postage bill is also becoming an obstacle! In order to raise funds to keep their mission going, and keep shipping blankets, their founder creates one-of-akind Remnants Reborn and Rainbow Promise blankets which are now for sale on Amazon, Etsy and their website. These blankets are made using small amounts of yarn, which are left over after they create their shelter blankets. They blend all the colors of the rainbow, and are uniquely one-ofa-kind. They are also a tangible reminder of all the individual blankets which were created from full skeins of the same yarn! If you have extra yarn to donate, or are interested in supporting their mission by purchasing a pet blanket, you can visit their website at or them at info@comfortforcritters.org.
