2 PawPrints Magazine's Dog Cover Model Winner Full disclosure: While I was incredibly honored to have Marcel selected as this month's cover model, I did not have high expectations for his behavior during the photo shoot. My dog is a devoted, brilliant and uproariously fun adoptee - the flip Photo by Dick Parrott side being, it takes him a while to warm up to people outside his family, he can be oppositional (especially when pet clothing enters the picture), and he can quickly turn any given scenario into a game of hide-and-seek; or worse, steal-and-chase. In fact, it's fair to say he's a compulsive thief. Luckily, PawPrints editors Diane and Kelly, and photographer Dick Parrott, are bona fide dog whisperers. They won my mischievous boy right over, to the point they had him so engrossed in digging dried bison treats out of a Kong that we were able to dress him up in homage to one of his namesakes - the great French mime, Marcel Marceau. And by the time my Marcel realized he wasn't exactly in Kansas anymore, he was so in love with the spotlight, and so blatantly feeling the studio's good vibes, that he wouldn't stop smiling. I'm in awe of the way Kelly and Diane were able to coax him into posing (and staying!) via strategic treat placement, followed by plenty of encouragement. As a former magazine editor, I've been to plenty of photo shoots, but none anywhere near as hilarious and heart-warming as this one. By the time Marcel did get around to stealing some of Mr. Parrott's studio props, he was on good enough terms with everyone that all was quickly forgiven. Rescuing a dog filled my and my boyfriend Wes' lives with love, excitement and entertainment, and this unique experience with PawPrints helped me to see a whole new side of my best friend, Marcel. We are both so grateful and charmed. Sincerely, Katie O'Reilly

4 Dineen Animal Hospital 1132 Floral Parkway - Wilmington, NC JEFF J. DINEEN, D.V.M. JAN BATTEN, D.V.M. EVE MILLS, D.V.M. JOANNE THOMPSON, D.V.M. (910) Cats ~ Dogs I am a sweet and loving longhaired cat, and my name is Alice Ann! Everyone says I'm just beautiful with my black and white coat. My previous owner had to move into a nursing home and couldn't take me with her. I really need a new home and a new owner to love on. Since I miss my home and the cages make me sad, Cat Adoption Team has reduced my adoption fee in hopes of finding a new home for me fast. Do you have a home for me? Please come and visit me at PetSmart in Wilmington. You won't be disappointed! For more information, you can also call Cat Adoption Team at I am sponsored by ECM Corporation. Thank you! Hi there, I m Addie and I've got it made - I have brains and beauty! I am very sweet and gentle, and am quite photogenic. Once I am used to my surroundings, I am ridiculously playful. I love to play fetch and tug of war with you or even by myself. During the summer, I am a water fanatic! I go crazy playing in the kiddie pool and trying to eat the water out of the hose. I get along perfectly with cats - they don't bother me at all. I am your typical hound dog with my nose glued to the ground. I love going on adventures and I could spend hours hiking in the woods! For more info on me, call You can also visit carewilmington.org. I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.). 4 April 2014

5 URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! There are so many reasons to adopt a perfect Family Dog like me, so why am I still here? My name is Roscoe (A010748) and I m homeless through no fault of my own. I was once part of a loving family, but the landlord declared I was no longer allowed and now I m here, a well-behaved, loving boy running out of time in a concrete kennel. Would you please consider me? I m great with children, excellent with other dogs and I m even friendly to cats. I have a quiet nature, am excellent on a leash and am house-trained. I know how to sit on command and am one of the most well-behaved dogs at the shelter. I ve made many human friends while here and they are praying I ll find a loving home. One of them walks with me to the picnic table outside and I sit at her feet, just content to be sharing her company. It seems so senseless that I m alone when I could be making someone very happy. I m just 2½-years-old and have so much love to give. Please give me the chance! The shelter is now open on Sundays, from 1pm to 4pm, if you can t come during the week. For driving directions or more info, please call Pender County Animal Shelter at or jhorton@pendercountync.gov. Please come meet me! I am sponsored in memory of Tammy Callipare for what would have been her 41st birthday. My name is Bridget. I have been behind bars two times, in two counties, and I am not lookin to go back to the slammer again. If you have any plan of keeping me in a crate all the time, or tied up in your backyard, then you are not the humans for me. I have a lot of energy and it is very frustrating in lock-up. I want to feel the sun on my back, the breeze blowing thru my hair, and to chase a ball or a Frisbee. Is that too much to ask? I am estimated to be about 1½years-old, have been spayed and had all my shots. I only weigh about 36 pounds and I would like a warm place to sleep at night and plenty of nutritious food. If I am not stressed out, I know I could gain weight and keep a smile on my pretty face. I am a nice Irish lass, and life would be less complicated if you made me your only dog. Honestly, after my negative experiences, I think I deserve somebody s total love and commitment. I do not mind cats and I am loving with humans great and small. Please feel free to contact Columbus Humane Society at jdw7512@yahoo.com or I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you.

I've used them many times--sometimes on pretty short notice--and they've always been able to accommodate. I know that my kitties are in good hands when I need to go out of town." Patricia N (Neighborhoods of Holly Ridge/Holly Ridge) homeaidepetsitting@yahoo.com Phone: (Bill) (Kelli) Website: Hi, my name is Juneau! I was named after the capital of Alaska because I was found abandoned on a country road during the ice storm. I was soaking wet, cold, hungry, and had frostbite on my ears and feet but recovered quickly with some TLC. I'm a female Walker Hound mix, approximately 1 to 2-yearsold, spayed, up to date on shots, house-trained, and very healthy. I love to run! I'm very active and playful and would love to have a fenced yard and another dog for a companion. I'm great with kids, cats, and other dogs, although I do have a bit of an issue with food guarding and prefer to be fed alone so no one will steal my dinner! I'm learning house manners and am very smart, loving, and willing to please, I just need a little guidance learning indoor rules because everything is so new to me. My foster mom would love to tell you more about me, or arrange a meeting. Please call her at Give me a chance and you won't be sorry! Mikey Peanut We are two charming brothers named Mikey and Peanut! We get along great, as you can see from our photo, but we do not have to be adopted together. However, you might just decide two is a magic number when you see how we complement each other - we re so entertaining and so very sweet! We are young fellows who love playing with toys and cuddling with humans, and we also get along with the other cats here. We re in great health and are neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Our former foster mom wishes she could adopt us, but she can t, so she is sponsoring the adoption fee for each of us. That should tell you how much love we inspired in her while we were staying at her place. So please, come meet us! We ll bring double the happiness to your home and you ll wonder how you ever got along without us. For adoption info, call Pender Humane Society at We are sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Harley and Murphy.

8 I m Scamp, a gorgeous Chihuahua boy with brown and black markings. I m large for a Chihuahua at 11 pounds, but that makes me all the more sturdy for cuddling, and I do love to cuddle. My favorite place to be is curled up in bed with you at night, right on your pillow. Although I am shy, anyone can pick me up and cuddle with me. I ve never been aggressive at all. When picked up, I love to put my neck on your neck and snuggle. I would make a WONDERFUL companion for anyone that is disabled. My foster home has a family member who is confined to a mobile wheelchair and I do not mind this at all. I simply follow right along with the chair. I m a great size to take anywhere with you, I m quiet, and I get along great with all other dogs and I even enjoy cats! I m also house-trained and ready for adoption! Please visit There you can fill out an application or view other pets up for adoption. If you need an application mailed or faxed, please call Hi everyone! I was abandoned when I was a puppy because I could not walk correctly as my knee caps were deformed. I have now had the surgeries to correct this situation so now I am looking for my very special person to share my life with. 15 Please call to adopt us! A star is born! Or in this case Stella, just another name for star. And just take a look; I m a beautiful 2-year-old, Torti-point Siamese mix. I love people, in fact prefer them to other cats. I guess you can say I m a bit catty, all puns intended. I ve already been spayed and vaccinated. Please give me a chance. They say I have trust issues, but who doesn t these days - with spying, snooping, hacking, Target card breaches, need I say more? So, excuse me if I take a little bit of time to work through my issues. Rest assured, I ll be worth it, as you can see I am a long-haired black and white, front declawed, young cat. I am 3-years-old which gives me quite a few good years to go. Don t waste my time with other pets or kids, it just won t work. Interested? Ask for Rosie. Looking for something sweet? How about a Cupcake? And this one doesn t have any calories. I am one of four kitties who grew up in a bakery, so we are really delightful, if I must say so myself. I am celebrating my first birthday and while my sisters have all found homes, I m still looking for one. I am a brown Tabby, but don t let the bland exterior fool you, I have a wonderfully sweet interior! So let s celebrate my birthday together and we ll be fat free! Cat Tails Much like the famous Loretta Lynn, I have black, sleek and glossy hair, or really fur. And we are both very friendly and adjust to change quickly. You see, I had to because I was dumped by my most recent adopter. Really? Luckily, I was rescued and I ve forgiven her much like Ms. Lynn had to forgive her philandering husband. Guess we have a lot in common. Dixie Dolly Deep in the heart of Dixie. Or maybe Dolly? We re sisters! Dixie is the long-haired Calico, and I am the Tortie. We re only 4-months-old but we ve have seen a lot in a short time - hence we like to act big and bad. We hiss when you reach for us, but once you bring us into your heart, we ll cuddle and purr. So if you have a little bit of patience, which is a virtue, we will reward you, as the saying goes, in spades. There s always one older cat in the group each month and this month it s me, Kendall. I am a 5-year-old, light gray Tabby. I start out a little shy and fearful, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I end up friendly and outgoing. So if you want that special someone, and don t mind waiting for that light to arrive, please take me home. I ve already been fixed and vaccinated so I m ready to be adopted today! 6622 Beach Drive SW, Ocean Isle Beach, NC April

19 New Hanover Sheriff s Office Animal Services Unit Please call to adopt us! OPEN SATURDAYS! Since before Christmas last year, I was living life as a stray. I had been hanging around this apartment complex when someone scooped me up and brought me to the shelter. I m a neutered and vaccinated boy who is named Sammy (A301543). I m quite handsome and have long black hair. I m social, I enjoy exploring, I like to cuddle and I love being touched. My new family must promise to love me and keep me safe and must also be willing to brush me so that my fur doesn't become knotted. My name is Max (A301272) and I m a 1-year-old, long-haired boy. I m looking for love, shelter and food and will promise to be an awesome feline companion. I ve already been neutered, I m current on vaccinations and I m laid-back. Seafood flavored kitty treats are a must - as in must be in my belly! I enjoy looking out windows and taking naps in the sun. Please adopt me forever. My name is Maggie (A301857) and I am a Lap Cat Extraordinaire. That is where I m meant to be - not alone in a cage. I love to be touched and will nuzzle into your hand. I have good looks, a sweet disposition and an amazing purrsonality. I ve lived with kids (ages 10, 6 & 4) and a dog, and I m looking for an inside home. If you want an affectionate cat who seeks attention, Pick Me! Please! At just 1-year of age, I find myself all alone and without a home. My name is Crystal (A301550) and I m a gray and white Tabby girl who is spayed and vaccinated. I like getting head rubs, playing with kitty toys and being held. I hope someone will adopt me and give me the forever home I deserve. Could that be you? Hey, no fair. My name is Katerina (A301836) and I m homeless through absolutely no fault of my own. My owners had to surrender me because of an illness in the family. I m 2-years-old, spayed, vaccinated and a family cat through and through. I m not thrilled being homeless and in a cage surrounded by all these other felines, so please come adopt me today! I m a great companion who is quiet (except for dinner time) and who loves to sit by a window and watch people and nature outside. My name is Gabby (A301808) and I m praying that I ll be adopted and have the opportunity to live a life full of love and happiness. I like being rubbed, actually I crave it - I LOVE IT! It makes me purr with delight. I m not great at posing for pictures but I am the most loving cat in the shelter right now. I m a 2-year-old Calico girl who has been spayed and vaccinated. I was found as a stray by a really nice family. They took care of me for a few months but couldn t keep me. They brought me here to the shelter with hopes that I ll find true love. Hope to meet you soon. 180 Division Dr. Wilmington, NC April

20 Awesome fellow! That s what they say about me, Ruger. I m a male Lab mix and not too big just about 50 pounds. I was rescued by some nice people in the late fall. When they took me to the vet, they discovered I had heartworms. These people got me my treatment and all of my shots. Then they brought me to Paw s Place. I ve been to a few Meet & Greets and it s fantastic getting to meet all these nice people. I know how to walk nicely on a leash, sit and listen but most of all I like greeting everyone I meet. I m told that as soon as I m neutered, I ll be ready for adoption. That should be by the time you are reading this, so hurry on over today! You can drop by any day from 9am Noon. You can also call the shelter for more information at I am sponsored by Shari Cutting of Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage. Thank you! Hi! I am Allie, a 4-year-old, 50 pound Wirehaired Terrier mix. My past life caused me some anxiety for sure, but SOAR came to my rescue and my days seem a lot sunnier now, as I am pretty much a happy-go-lucky girl, chasing balls, going on walks, and getting brushed. Yes, I am enjoying the company of the volunteers, but my earlier experiences have left me a little jumpy sometimes most often around men that I am not familiar with. Some of the dogs here I like, others not so much. Cats are definitely not my cup of tea. Please come out for a visit or two so that we can really get acquainted. Then maybe we can go home??? I promise to thank you for the rest of my life with kisses and grateful cuddles! Please call SOAR at for driving directions or more information. I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge.

21 PAW S Place Please call to adopt us! (Call for a pre-adoption application and adoption fee info.) Hi, I m Drake. I found myself at Paw s Place because my owner went off to school and his mother couldn t take care of me. It was a very sad time for me when I first arrived. Now I m becoming my old self. I am starting to trust people again and I love to play with stuffed toys. When you come to visit that s me the tall black dog wagging a big stuffed toy around! I m still quite young, only 3-yearsold. I tend to be a little partial to men, but I think if the right lady came along I would love her too! It s me, Laurel. I know that you ve seen my story before. I really don t understand why I haven t been snatched up! I m a Jack Russell mix, about 6-yearsold. Since my arrival at Paw s Place, I ve been spayed, vaccinated and treated for heartworms. Now I am healthy and ready to go! I ve seen others be adopted and I want that opportunity too. You can meet me any day between 9am to Noon. Please? It s me, Shelby! Everyone says that I m the perfect dog. I m house-trained and know the basic rules of the house. Our volunteers say that I m a real lovebug I really do love people. I do get along with other dogs, but it just depends just like with people! I m now considered a senior at 7½-years-young. But I m healthy and I still have lots of pep in my step and I love to go for walks. The kennel is open every day from 9am-Noon, so you can come meet me any day! We are Chelsea and Colby, 4-month-old Pug mixes who are up to date on shots. We came from the same situation as Chloe, pictured below. We can be a little shy around people, but since our arrival at Paw s Place, we are learning how nice people can be and when we see someone approach our kennel, we get all excited and want the attention. At maturity we will probably be less than 10 pounds. By the time you read this story, we will be ready for adoption, so come on over! My name is Chloe. I m a Pug/ Chihuahua mix and we think I m about 4-yearsold. I arrived at Paw s Place after being rescued from a backyard breeder. He had way too many dogs. I ve had a litter or two, but I am spayed and am finished at being a mama. Don t get me wrong, I think I m pretty good at nurturing, but I think I would like a little me time. I m a little shy at first, but soon I warm up to people. I weigh less than 10 pounds and am easy to hold! I have been given so much attention since my arrival. Come visit me and see if I would be a good addition for your family. My name is Millie. I was so grateful when I was rescued from a neglectful situation and brought to Paw s Place. But that was about a year ago. Since then I ve seen other dogs come and go, but I m still here. I ve got a lot of love to give and can t wait to give it to that special someone. I m a Bulldog/ Boxer mix who is healthy and ready to go. Volunteers have been teaching me proper manners and how to walk on a leash. Come visit and say you saw me in PawPrints! 3701 Boiling Spring Rd., Winnabow, NC April

23 URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! I m a purebred, pure white Husky named Klondike (A011624) and my time is running out at the shelter! I know you must think this is some sort of mistake, but I assure you it s the truth! I ve been passed up time and time again, even though I m a wellbehaved, loving boy who sits on command like a champ. I ve shown no aggression to other dogs, I m friendly to all the people I meet and I take treats ever so gently from your fingers. Here s even more good news: my adoption fee is paid for! That includes my neutering and my heartworm test. Perhaps the reason I ve been passed over is because I have entropion, which means the edge of my eyelids turn inward. My lashes irritate my eye, which is uncomfortable. A simple procedure can take care of it, and it can be done at the same time I am neutered. Could that be why I ve been over looked? To my way of thinking, however, it s even more reason for a compassionate person to adopt me - think how uncomfortable I am with my eyes this way, and how grateful and relieved I ll be if you help me! I ll spend the rest of my life loving you, my rescuer. For adoption information, or driving directions, please call Pender County Animal Shelter at or jhorton@pendercountync.gov. I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.

27 Once upon a time, we both had a home. We ve been together for a very long time, and maybe that s the problem. We ve reached what is classified as senior status and all of a sudden we find ourselves homeless! Needless to say, that s just not right, now is it? Let me introduce the two of us, as we are both very endearing Chihuahua s. I m Chiquita (A074289), the 9-year-old white, female beauty. That is such a lovely name for a lovely friend. We don t have a clue as to why we found ourselves abandoned and then brought into the shelter but we would truly love to make a home with you and share our senior years in your company. Seniors have a lot of pluses going for them because we are settled, well-behaved, and not so antsy like the younger generation. Come check us out! We d love to go home with you! You ll find us at the Onslow County Animal Shelter and we ll be looking for you! The shelter is located at 244 Georgetown Road in Jacksonville. 32 Feature Story PawPrints Magazine s 12th Annual Cover Model Search The Judges Decisions Are In: Winning Cover Dog and Runners-Up Winning Cover Dog Marcel Submitted by: Katie O Reilly On February first of 2013, I found my dog, Marcel shivering, patchy, suffering from worms, and nestled into a broken cardboard box in a grocery store parking lot in Van Nuys, California. I picked him up and he woke up, opening the biggest, most chocolatey eyes I'd ever seen. Then he tried to play tug of war with my grocery bag. Or maybe he was trying to steal from me (this is one of his great passions in life). I gave my boyfriend very little notice before taking this new family member home, but Marcel quickly won Wes over with his diligent guarding style, insistent cuddling and epic play sessions. The next day I took him to the vet, who took a look at his teeth and guessed he was 10 weeks old, and also that he was likely the byproduct of a stray pitbull sneaking onto a dog breeder's property and impregnating a German shepherd. (The area of Los Angeles County in which he was found is known as a breeding hot spot.) "When breeders end up with a litter they can't profit from, they often kill or abandon them," our vet explained. I'd be lying if I said living with Marcel was easy in the early days he was bitey, detrimentally protective of me, and suffered severe bouts of separation anxiety, yowling so loudly whenever we left for work in the mornings that he'd wake the neighbors. I began sneaking him to work with me, and his outsized personality and inventive style of playing (he creates at least two new games a month) made him a hit with my coworkers. They were happy to keep my secret from the "head honchos" and gave me warning calls whenever the boss was headed my way. He certainly fostered a wonderful, if subversive, sense of community and morale in the office! Exactly one month after adopting him, I was admitted into UNCW's creative writing graduate program. My colleagues were crushed when I announced that Marcel and I were packing up and switching coasts, and they made me promise to send frequent updates and pictures. My boyfriend wasn't able to move at the same time I had to leave, so, last summer, just Marcel and I took off down 1-40 for a weeklong, cross-country road trip. He behaved like a rock star in the various low-budget, dogfriendly motel rooms we found (i.e. he tried to trash all of them), but he loved gazing out the car window and made a game out of changing the radio station. He also scared off a group of questionable-looking men one night when our car broke down in Arkansas. ("Easy Kujo," one roadside drunk said, backing off and leaving me alone, in safety.) I have great pictures of Marcel hiking the Grand Canyon, Palo Duro Canyon and Hot Springs National Park. In Sedona, Arizona, a crystal healer we met on the street praised his undying energy and intellect, and with his one-ear-up/one-down signature look, he practically became his own tourist attraction among Beale Street's revelers that night we swung through Memphis. Upon arriving in Wilmington, we headed straight for the beach. Marcel still can't get enough of the waves. (He barks and growls at them until finally, he takes a running leap at them, attack-style.) For several months, he was my sole companion in my new city. He kept me feeling secure at night, and he was the reason I forged most of my friendships let's just say he's a hit at the Empie dog park, and at Satellite. And the Port City is the birthplace of my personal favorite of his games: Anytime I shriek and point to a water bug, he boxes it for a while, smiling huge, until he kills it. Marcel's style of play and protection has made my life a lot more fun. He also makes me feel safe and loved at all times, no matter what else I'm dealing with. He can be emotionally volatile and unpredictable, but he's my sweetest, most diehard friend. And with him around the ILM, I'm rarely short on writing material. 1 st Runner-Up Lyla Submitted by: Eva Creighton My husband and I have always been dog lovers and supporters of animal rescue. We rescued a neighborhood dog from living outside on a tether, constantly becoming entangled in trees, never having proper food, water or the ability to access shelter. The following week we brought Lala to our vet for her spay surgery. She was listless postsurgery and just wanted to lay on my lap and have her head stroked. I was recovering from surgery too at the time so we were very best buddies having a shared common experience. In the morning she was alert and wagging her tail and happy to see everyone but still not really herself, she was not eating and just took some water. A little while later, she got up and walked back into her crate and snuggled up in her favorite warm and cozy purple bed to sleep. We decided to let her rest and took the other two for a walk. When we returned we were not able to wake her, Lala was gone, our rescue for her came too late. We were heartbroken. After I finished recovery from my surgery, in her memory I began to volunteer with the rescue organization that was so kind offering to me to help with placing the dog no one else wanted. I started working with Adopt-an-ANGEL in June of 2012 working on adoption fairs. We took animals from the Brunswick County Animal Protective Services Shelter. The shelter had just been taken over by the Brunswick County Sheriff s Office and was undergoing a radical transformation to a humane shelter. I met dedicated animal lovers and started the most rewarding volunteer service to help homeless animals and to raise awareness of our pet overpopulation. We missed our Lala terribly, when I began the volunteer work my husband warned me not to bring home any animals unless I found another Lala. I met a red-nosed pit puppy named Lyla that leaned on me exactly the way Lala used to. She had been adopted before I got a chance but a few months later she was back at the shelter looking for a home. I took her out to the adoption fair that day she was curled up into a tight little ball on the backseat of my van. After spending the day together bonding, I was never able to put her back inside the shelter, I took her home to become part of our pack. She has been with us for over a year now and we love her more than anyone can imagine. So we saved her but she saved us and helped us to heal our broken hearts. Both of these little red dogs have taught us so much and changed our lives forever! Lala and Lyla helped me find my calling to a place in our community where I can make a difference helping homeless animals! She is a beautiful and sweet baby and would make a great cover model! 32 April 2014

33 2 nd Runner-Up Kenzie Submitted by: Megan Robertson 3 rd Runner-Up (tie) Pinto Submitted by: Rachel Richardson Feature Story 3 rd Runner-Up (tie) Saylor Submitted by: Kelley Stanley This is Kenzie. She came into our lives accidentally a few months ago, and has been one of the best decisions we ever made. My sister was in town one weekend and wanted to go to the Humane Society. On the way, I picked up a PawPrints Magazine and was looking through it and saw Kenzie. I hadn't really put much thought into getting another dog, but there was something about her that was calling me to come visit. Next thing I knew, we were on our way to Pender Humane Society. We walked in the door and I asked for her specifically. They told me I could go in her kennel and I did. I squatted down to say hi and she curled up in my lap. I knew right then and there she had to be mine, so we started the process to bring her home, and a few days later we did. Since that day she has made us smile more, laugh more, and love more. We have another little dog and he has been showing many positive changes as well, and has even gotten to a point where he engages play with Kenzie on his own. It is incredibly difficult to be sad with her nearby. I remember I was watching her play with her toys one Saturday afternoon a few weeks after she joined our family and got upset, not because she was playing but because someone didn't want this sweet little girl in their lives anymore. I am so happy that I am able to put a warm roof over her head, give her a friend to play with, tons of toys, and a huge bed (that she has to share). Bringing Kenzie into our lives is a decision I will never regret and I won't hesitate to bring home another rescue when it is time to get another puppy. I think Kenzie should be on the cover of PawPrints Magazine because without PawPrints then I would have never found this lovable sweet girl that has made my life complete. It was her picture in the magazine that took me out to Pender Humane Society and her picture that led me to ask specifically for her. PawPrints saved Kenzie's life. This is a story about a girl and her dog. In 2010, at the age of 23, I adopted a puppy. He was found in a field underneath a box, abandoned. Six weeks after Pinto wreaked havoc all over my apartment, my boyfriend walked out on me. Alone, far from home, one year into graduate school and struggling with untreated depression, I lost my mind. I spent most of the summer drinking and contemplating suicide. If I had not had a dog at that time, I would not be here. Pinto, just by being something to care for, gave me a reason to live. Anytime I felt like actually following through with one of my irrational death plans, I'd take Pinto out for a walk. I'd buy him a toy and watch him disembowel it, I'd take him to the dog park, we'd go on a car ride. It is no hyperbole to say Pinto genuinely saved my life. Since then, Pinto and I have been all over America to Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Oklahoma, where we lived for a year and a half after I lost my job in Wilmington. Wherever Pinto is, he s home, so long as there is a couch to lie on and someone to pet him. He is lovable, excitable, and far gentler than his breed would imply. In 2013, Pinto raised over $2000 for surgery to repair the torn ACL in his back knee. Solely though an online campaign and word-of-mouth, I was able to give Pinto the mobility he d lost from his injury; he had his surgery in December of 2013 and is back to running and playing like he did as a puppy. Pinto s quality of life has vastly improved, and I am grateful for the contributions of all those who donated; the campaign reaffirmed my faith in human kindness and certainly revitalized my will to live. I can t imagine life without Pinto and have a hard time remembering the years before we met. He has indelibly impacted my life; I am currently a graduate student at UNCW finishing a degree in writing, but I d like to become a Veterinary Technician and work in the field of pet welfare. Pinto is far and away the kindest and most accepting individual humans and animals included I ve ever had the chance to meet. Every day is a delight with him, and I look forward to many happy years together. To be chosen as PawPrints 2014 Cover Model would be an honor and a privilege, and I d be ecstatic to share Pinto s generous spirit with the world. I adopted Saylor from Pender Endangered Animal Rescue in June I had recently lost my family dog after an amazing 14 years. I never pictured the day that I would want another dog but the day I saw Saylor, my life was changed. Saylor helped with the healing process from my recent loss. The sleepless nights, the many toys that were destroyed, and the vet bills were all worth it because there is not a day that he doesn t give me a good laugh with his quirky personality. Saylor s personality is one for the books. He greets everyone with his out-ofcontrol tail that never stops wagging, and a tongue that is 100 miles an hour. Saylor always looks forward to his nightly bones and tasty treats. He is smart enough to know that when he stands at the door long enough, decides to go out and chew up some pine cones or dig some holes, he can come in and get a treat. Which 98.9% of the time is accurate. He recently decided he would explore his taste buds and wanted to see how the couch cushion tasted, and obviously it passed the test since there is only one cushion on the couch now. Furniture can be replaced but he cannot. To balance out his personality, there is a sweet side. Although he takes up the entire queen size bed, being only 45 pounds, he will cuddle at any time of day, and you can never say no to his bath of kisses. Saylor should be on the cover of PawPrints because he represents a population that people overlook. Rescues are typically not seen as those animals that are at Westminster s Dog Show but they can win over many hearts with the lives that they change. Not to be biased (okay, maybe a little) but rescues are the cutest of all because they are all unique, and that is what should win at Westminster s. I have never rescued before, and honestly never thought I would. Now I wouldn t do anything else. I have the most remarkable job of all - a dog mom. I know he appreciates the life that he has and he knows he has me wrapped around all four paws. It really is a Who Rescued Who? relationship. I have a gorgeous shiny black coat with a white chest and paws. I was successfully treated for heartworms, spayed and am up to date on my vaccines. My foster mom said I am the bee s knees, not sure what it means but I am going with awesome. I have two Great Dane foster brothers 10 times my size who I love playing and snuggling with. I may be small right now, but tomorrow I will have grown by another 5 pounds, per my foster mom. I also have another small furry foster brother they call a cat. I think it s just a small dog. I love playing with my extra large foster brothers, but I like small dogs, too. I really like the two little boys next door. They fascinate me because they do all kinds of fun things, like digging in the dirt, marching with flags, and riding bikes. I run up and down the yard following them around. My foster mom said I was good with such young children - especially for a Dane puppy. I am glad she noticed all my efforts! Just so you know, I am not only beautiful but I am smart, too. I am learning sit, down, leave it, and I am crate-trained. I m a fast learner. I am working really hard on my potty-training. I will scratch on the door, but I have to be careful not to forget when I am playing. My foster mom has me on a schedule which makes it easy so I know what to expect. I can even make it all night without an accident. I am now ready for my forever people to realize that I am the one for them. If you d like to adopt me, please greatdanerescuealliance@gmail.com or call BOSTON TERRIER RESCUE TEAM CAROLINAS My name is Scarlett and I m a precious, medium-sized female Boston mix. I m about 1-yearold and weigh 22 pounds. I've done well in my foster home living with male dogs, but I can be a little bossy towards submissive dogs. I am crate-trained, leash-trained and have nearly completed house-training. I know commands: sit, stay, in your crate/kennel, and outside. I m a very happy pup and enjoy play of any kind, including interacting with other dogs, fetch, tug, and playing with toys. I also love giving kisses, chewing on bones, going on car rides, and snuggling with humans. If you'd like to ask about me, send an to contactbtrtoc@yahoo.com or call CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE Hi, I m Freddie. I haven t had a lot of attention, so I m kinda scared of new people - but I warm up after a few minutes. I m finding out humans don t want to hurt me, just pet me. These kind people are feeding me well and taking care of me, and I really like them. I ve even gained 3 pounds since I ve been here! I love to run and play in the yard. You should see how fast I can run after a ball! I need someone who will love me and show me a normal life. Will you? To make me a member of your family, please call or visit our website at Also, we are always short on foster homes! If you have ever thought about fostering, please contact CBHR for more details. COASTAL CAROLINA BOSTON TERRIER RESCUE Nice to meet you, I m Jingles. Don t let the grey fool you, doc says I m really only about 5 and when you see me running, you ll know he s right. I make friends easily and love to play with other dogs - it s easy cause I can t hear when they talk about me. You see, I m deaf but that s ok because I can still run fast and snuggle with my people. I learn fast, following the other dogs around and doing what they do. If you want to teach me hand signals, I think that would be really fun. Can I follow you home? For more info, please contact CCBTR at ccbtr@fastmail.fm or call Visit us online at April

47 ORRELL & REINER, P.C. Certified Public Accountants P.O. Box 4054 Wilmington, NC Robert H. Orrell, III, CPA Anne W. Reiner, CPA Tel Pleased to meet you. My name is Mugsy. I am the sweetest, most gentle cat. My former home says that I was wonderful with their young children (2 and 4-years-old). I am homeless due to an unexpected job transfer where my family had to move into a home with a no-pet policy. They were devastated to have to give me up. I am one of Adopt-An-ANGEL s kittens from last year. They hope someone out there will give a really sweet, adorable adult kitty a chance because I deserve to find my forever family. If you would like to know more info about me or would like to inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at You may visit us at for more details. I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you! Hi friends! My name is Miracle (A070016) and I'm a 2-year-old, spayed Lab mix. I'm a special girl searching for a special family: you see, I'm heartworm positive and that can scare people off, either because they don't know how successful treatment can be or they don't want to take on the extra cost. I promise, I'M WORTH IT! I'm gentle, loving, submissive and prepared to be a loyal and steadfast family member for the rest of my life. Please talk to your vet to learn about treatment options and then come out and fall in love with me! You won't regret it! For driving directions or more information, please call Brunswick County Sheriff s Animal Protective Services at Thanks for reading about me and I hope to see you very soon! I am sponsored by Adam's Folly Pet Boarding, Bolivia, NC. Thanks! Congratulations, PawPrints, on 12 Years! Thanks for helping many homeless animals find their forever homes. Great job, Diane and Kelly Dock St. Downtown Wilmington Free Off-Street Parking Hours M-F 8:30-5:00 April
