This will be an awesome event on Friday, January 13th. They will perform from 2:30-3:30 pm. Invite family & friends if you wish. Hearing music first activates the brain s cortex. When you try to identify the tune or reminisce about past events associated with it, the brain must process and retrieve the memory. Singing along involves the language centers, and if you clap your hands or tap your feet, you trigger the motor cortex. Neurologists say all these regions of the brain act much like an orchestra when listening to music.
2 2 Trivia Whiz Remembering MLK Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in January. King, born Jan. 15, 1929, was a minister and social activist who played a pivotal role in the American civil rights movement. King s famous I Have a Dream speech at the Lincoln Memorial came during 1963 s March on Washington. The appearance established his reputation as one of the greatest American orators. Time magazine named King its Man of the Year in A year later, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating inequality through nonviolent resistance. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in Happy Birthday!! # 230 Ardis Hassett 1/2 # 139 Connie Jennson 1/3 # 337 Doris Hall 1/9 # 116 Sister Juanita 1/13 # 109 Mary J Harrison 1/23 # 332 Mary E Harris 1/24 # 312 Darlene Moore 1/29 Time to Celebrate a Birthday! Each month we celebrate birthdays for our residents. We have cake with everyone. This is a time to announce who is having a birthday for that month. We sing Happy Birthday to them and enjoy a time of celebration. This is on Fridays at 2 p.m. during Entertainment. Cake for January Birthdays January 27th, at 2 pm. Goodbye, Dry Skin Winter s cool, dry air can leave skin rough and itchy. Take these steps to banish dry skin: Bathing. Hot water can zap skin of essential moisture, so take lukewarm showers and baths, and limit them to 10 minutes or less. Use a gentle soap and dry off by blotting gently with a towel. Moisturize. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing while skin is still damp. Try creams or ointments, which are thicker than lotions, and look for products that contain shea butter, olive oil or petroleum jelly. Use it throughout the day, especially after washing your hands. Hydrate. You ve probably heard the expression You are what you eat. The right nutrition can hydrate you from the inside out. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration. Many fruits and vegetables are high in water content, and the omega-3 fats found in foods such as salmon, tuna, nuts and olive oil can help your body retain moisture. Heating. Avoid sitting near a fireplace, furnace vent or other heat sources. If possible, use a humidifier to combat dry indoor air. Bedtime. Hands and feet are often the driest parts of the body, so slather them with lotion before bed. To treat especially dry skin, wear cotton gloves and socks overnight to trap moisture.
3 3 Winter Wonderland Wonders! January is known for walloping a blast of wintry weather into many parts of the country, but no matter where you live, there are occasional weather extremes to deal with. Start a discussion about your extreme weather memories. What was the most extreme form of weather heavy snow days, where you grew up? Do you have any memories of particularly severe occurrences? How did you survive them? When you were younger, did the weather in your hometown ever cause school to close? If so, what did you do on those days? Have you personally lived through a horrible snow storm? What do you remember most about it? What is your favorite type of weather, and why? Would you prefer it year-round, or just seasonally? Winter Wonderland Party, January 2:00 p.m. Wit & Wisdom Creativity is putting your imagination to work, and it s produced the most extraordinary results in human culture. Robinson An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail. Edwin Land Celebrating Your Birthday With a Meal of Your Choice! By Brian Rosso, R.D. Happy New Year to everyone! Starting Jan. 1, 2017, American House will be offering a special birthday menu to everyone on the day of his or her birthday. You will be able to pick from special entrée choices especially prepared by our culinary staff. These choices are: shrimp scampi or grilled, marinated sirloin steak. You will also be served your own birthday cake on your special day. Have a great New Year, and we look forward to serving you. Happy Birthday and Happy New Year! Grab a Pen and Get Happy Everyone likes to get a thank-you, but writing those words to someone can bring bliss as well. Participants in a study wrote three letters of thanks over a three-week period and afterward, reported more happiness and satisfaction and less depression. Experts believe the feel-good reaction comes from expressing a heartfelt message and the act of remembering the gift or kind gesture being written about. Remember Maleta Maleta comes in once a month and will help you make cards. This is a great way to show someone you are thinking about them. Make a thinking of you card, a get well card, or a birthday card. Take advantage of this activity that American House offers. This will make you feel so good about yourself. Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people. Leo Burnett Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. Scott Adams It is in the compelling zest of high adventure and of victory, and in creative action, that man finds his supreme joys. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Creativity takes courage. Henri Matisse

Cue the Cauliflower While cauliflower may be lacking in color, the super food more than makes up for it with health benefits and versatility. Cauliflower is a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables, which includes broccoli, cabbage and kale. But unlike those green crops, cauliflower s heavy leaves cover its head (called a curd) as it grows, blocking out sunlight and preventing the production of chlorophyll, the pigment that gives plants their green color. Without the sun s rays, the head stays white. Cultivated in Asia and the Mediterranean more than 2,000 years ago, cauliflower was first grown in North America in the late 1600s. Cauliflower is low-calorie and packed with fiber, folate, vitamins C and K and other antioxidants. These nutrients have been shown to boost brain and heart health and help fight disease. Its florets, stems and leaves can be eaten raw or cooked in any number of ways. Because of its compatible color and texture, cauliflower is sometimes used as a low-calorie substitute in potato and rice dishes and even pizza crust. California is the top U.S. producer of cauliflower. Building Services Check Out Our Beauty Salon!
