She is very happy to join the team at Estrella Estates and said this is my dream job. Geralyn has always been interested in art and majored in studio art in college. She worked as an illustrator alongside her husband, Tony, in their own business for 27 years preparing illustrations for the U.S. Patent Office. Geralyn also has several years management experience in senior housing. She is very proud of their two grown sons and loves her two daughter-in-laws. Geralyn has one granddaughter who is very artistic. Originally from the East Coast, Geralyn and her husband now live in Sun City West with a little rescue Yorkshire terrier named Roki. Quote to Remember Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children. Alex Haley
2 Singalong With Jose We are so proud to add Jose DeJesus to our Estrella family. He is a welcome addition to our Culinary staff as a Kitchen Helper. Not only is Jose a dedicated worker, he has volunteered to sing karaoke the second Thursday of each month, at 3 p.m. He writes his own music and is enhancing his musical talent by just completing a college course in music production. Jose s talent does not end with music. He is also a very talented artist in multiple mediums. If you want to have a fun afternoon and sing your heart out, join Jose. The first singalong will be on September 8th, at 3 p.m. in the Activity Room. Refreshments will follow. The Tailgating Tradition Each fall, football, food and fun combine for the uniquely American pastime known as tailgating. It s estimated that each year about 50 million fans spend up to $12 billion on these parking lot picnics that take place before, during and after a game. There are several theories about the origins of the tradition. Some liken tailgate parties to harvest festivals, where farm families gathered to celebrate and share their bountiful crops, feasting outside before retreating indoors for the winter. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, when people traveled to football and baseball games by train, they brought their own food since stadiums then didn t provide any. As the automobile became common, fans would arrive early to get a parking spot and passed the time enjoying food, drink and camaraderie. Today, tailgating has become part of the pregame festivities for other sports, including baseball and soccer, as well as events like concerts. Mondays Are Just Crazy Some happy faces wearing crazy hats on a typical Monday at Estrella Estates. From left: Don and Billie Hollarin, Eileen Glock, Florence Ence and Russ Hockman. An estimated 100 million adults in the U.S. live with chronic pain, caused by conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine and sciatica, among others. Often, this type of pain is compounded by poor sleep, stress and anxiety. Meditation is gaining use in the health care field as a way to treat chronic pain. Meditation and Pain Management Doctors are still unsure exactly how meditation works to alleviate pain, but research shows that the practice may actually change the areas of the brain that process both the physical and emotional responses to pain and injury. Not only is it possible for a person s pain level to be reduced, but meditation can also help the person learn to cope with it better. Stress and negative thinking often brought on by pain can exacerbate pain even further, creating a vicious cycle. But mindfulness meditation, which focuses on awareness of thoughts and sensations, can help break that cycle. By acknowledging their pain rather than trying to ignore it, chronic pain sufferers may be able to change the way they experience pain, resulting in a higher tolerance and happier outlook. Meditation is not meant to replace traditional treatments like medication and physical therapy, but instead works with other methods to improve a person s quality of life. Recent studies indicate that even beginners practicing simple techniques can see results in a relatively short time. Beat the Heat Party We didn t need an excuse to have a party drinks and munchies were enjoyed for our beat the heat party. New Movie Matinee Times The new movie matinee time will be 2 p.m. Chef Charlie joins the fun. Cool drinks, good friends and music made for a great time. The Arizona sun was hot outside but we were cool inside Estrella Estates.

4 Crafty Estrella Crafters The Estrella Arts and Crafts group has taken the art of coloring to a new level, creating one of a kind beautiful cards to give to family and friends. Coloring used to be reserved for kids, but now the activity has found new life in adults taking up this fun craft. What started as a kid s pastime now turned into a fun activity and the results can be shared with everyone we know. Each resident starts out with their own set of pencils, an eraser and a sharpener, along with a box to keep it all together. The sky s the limit when it comes to choosing a unique color palette to color a black and white printed card. The real fun begins after the card is carefully colored. Clear colored jewels, glitter and even silk flowers are added to each creation to add sparkle and interest. Like meditation, coloring allows the brain to switch off other thoughts and focus. It s so relaxing. Finished cards by Estelle Pilon and Ruby Blaine (unfinished starter card in center) Silly cat card with glitter and silk flowers added The Supreme Law of the Land It s studied by students, interpreted by lawmakers and above all, prized by the people. The U.S. Constitution, which assigns powers to the branches of government and protects the basic rights of citizens, was approved and signed on September 17, Celebrate Constitution Day with some historical trivia: In May 1787, 55 delegates from 12 states attended the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation, America s first constitution that had been ratified in The delegates, known today as the framers of the Constitution, met in the same building where the Declaration of Independence was adopted and signed the Pennsylvania State House, now called Independence Hall. George Washington was unanimously elected president of the convention. At 81, Benjamin Franklin was the oldest delegate in attendance. Pennsylvania delegate Gouverneur Morris is said to have written most of the final document s text, including the famous We the people preamble. A clerk named Jacob Shallus handwrote the original final copy, which contained more than 4,500 words. A total of 39 delegates signed the Constitution; some were not present for the signing, and three chose not to sign. Funny Money Auction Mark your calendar for the much anticipated funny money auction! The date is set for Wednesday, September 28th, at 3 p.m. and will go on till the items are gone or the money runs out. So, start counting up those bank rolls of funny money and get ready to bid your highest. Intergenerational Activities From Grandparents Day on the Sunday after Labor Day to Intergeneration Month throughout September, this season offers plenty of reminders to take some time to bond with younger people. Whether they re your grandchildren, other relatives, friends, or community members in need of a mentor, here are a few ways you can connect with them: Teach your grandkids your favorite card game or a classic game like mahjong or chess. In return, have them show you a favorite video game or fun mobile app. Volunteering together is a great way to teach younger folks the importance of giving back to the community. Visit an animal shelter, pick up trash at a local park, or spend time helping out at a food bank. Like the song says, Everything old is new again. Many in today s generation are interested in traditional hobbies like sewing, knitting and gardening. If you possess skills in these areas, offer to teach the basics. Working on projects together gives you a chance to chat about other topics as well as foster the love of learning.
