Super Star Nutrition For Kids Suggested Script: Food Safety for Super Star Nutrition Intro, Key message (interactive)-- 5 minutes: Hello, we re going to get started now. My name is and I d like to welcome you to this session. (If there are other trainers, introduce them at this time.) Thank you for taking your time to be here today and listening to our lesson about proper handwashing. Today we are going to have a fun demonstration that some lucky volunteer will get to participate in, as well as share some information regarding handwashing issues. Our goal today is to have you all know the importance why handwashing is important in food safety, to learn the proper steps to handwashing, and to be able to teach young children when and how to properly wash their hands. (Ask the audience for responses trainers could have flip chart or overhead prepared in advance with questions if desired) What percentage of the time do you think the average American says he/she ALWAYS washes his or her hands? : o After using a public restroom? o After changing a diaper? o After coughing or sneezing? o Before handling or preparing food? (Pass out Hand Washing Habits handout) The percentage the average American say he/she ALWAYS washes his or her hands: o After using a public restroom? (answer 95%) o After changing a diaper? (answer 75%) o After coughing or sneezing? (answer 31%) o Before handling food or eating food? (answer 80%) Obviously, we would like to have 100% of Americans washing their hands before / after all of these activities. Science tell us that hand washing really CAN stop the spread of many diseases, both from food and people. Hand washing will reduce the risk of getting and giving the common cold to others. Children and older Food Safety for Super Star Nutrition Lesson Plan Script Page 1 of 5
adults are especially susceptible to becoming ill from both food borne germs and those spread by people. The set of 12 SSN Activity Sheets have simple cooking activities for children. It is expected that before children could do any of the activities, they would have to know how to properly wash their hands. Also, it is a CACFP requirement for all children in care to wash their hands prior to eating a meal. Demonstration of Activity (interactive)-- 5 minutes: (Pass out Handwashing 101 handout to participants) (Review Handwashing 101 handout with participants on WHEN to wash hands) Before you: o Prepare or eat food o Treat a cut or wound or tend to someone who is sick o Insert or remove contact lenses After you: o Go to the bathroom o Handle uncooked foods, including raw meat, poultry or fish o Change a diaper o Blow your nose, cough or sneeze o Handle garbage o Tend to someone who is sick or injured o Handle animals or animal waste. (Review Handwashing 101 handout with participants on HOW to wash hands ) 1. Wet hands with warm water 2. Apply soap to hands 3. Rub hands vigorously together for seconds. You could sing ABC song for measuring time. Be sure to scrub your: a. Palms b. Wrists c. Back of Hands d. Between fingers e. Under fingernails 4. Rinse soap from hands with warm water 5. Dry hands with a disposable paper towel 6. Turn off taps with same paper towel Food Safety for Super Star Nutrition Lesson Plan Script Page 2 of 5
OK, so we ve gone over when we wash our hands and on how we wash our hands. Now we get to the fun stuff! We now need a volunteer. (Ask audience for a volunteer. Have them come to the sink area with you. If you have trouble getting a volunteer, hint that there may be a small prize for the volunteer (be sure you have a prize to give!)) We are going to do a demonstration on the purpose of Handwashing, and when an how to do it correctly. For our demonstration, first we are going to rub a little petroleum jelly on our hands. Then we ll sprinkle some cinnamon on our hands, and rub them together. Rub your hands together really well germs can get into all those lines and creases on your hands! The cinnamon clings to your hands, just as germs do. (Have volunteer do this with trainers help. Have volunteer hold up hands to the audience to show what the germs look like) Now, here is the real task--to wash off all the germs! So, line up by the sink, and practice washing your hands the way I described earlier. The cinnamon doesn t just rinse off, and neither do germs. We are going to use proper hand washing procedure to get rid of those germs! Audience, please call out the steps to handwashing to our volunteer as we go through this demonstration (Go through the steps of handwashing with the volunteer and audience) Thank you (name of Volunteer) for assisting with this demonstration. (Trainer hand out a small prize now to the volunteer for assisting, if promised earlier). Group Discussion 5 minutes (Discuss the following handwashing issues with the audience) Now, I d like to address some Handwashing issues. (Poll audience) First, is necessary to use Antibacterial hand soap when washing your hands? (Wait for responses) The answer is No, it is not necessary for handwashing; it s the scrubbing of hands that gets the germs off hands during washing. (Poll audience) Second, what about Hand Sanitizers? Can they take the place of handwashing? (Wait for responses) No, hand sanitizers do NOT take the place of handwashing. They can kill some germs, but not all. It is acceptable to use hand sanitizers only if handwashing facilities Food Safety for Super Star Nutrition Lesson Plan Script Page 3 of 5
are not available. It s better than nothing, but certainly doesn t replace proper handwashing. (Poll audience) Third, should you use bar soap or liquid hand soap or does it matter? (Wait for responses) Well, either is acceptable for handwashing, however liquid hand soap is a best practice. The pump head on the liquid soap is a washable surface, whereas the bar soap can collect germs on the surface and those germs could be passed on to other users Lastly, be sure to use disposable, non-reusable towels when drying hands. They are necessary for hand washers to use when turning off taps and opening doors immediately after washing hands to stop cross contamination of germs from one user to another. Terry cloth towels that are reusable can transfer germs from one user to the other. With a single use disposable towel, you know it s a clean towel. Recap - 2 minutes Let s review what we have talked about today: We learned about Americans handwashing habits and that Americans admit to not ALWAYS washing hands when they should. We know that handwashing is important, especially for us, when preparing food or before eating because it helps to stop the spread of disease! We reviewed the steps for proper handwashing. (Poll audience) What are those steps again? You may refer to the handout Handwashing 101 if you d like. (Have audience go through them in unison or individually out loud). Test For Understanding - 3 minutes (Pass out the Handwashing Quiz) Let s take a couple of minutes to review this Quiz of what we ve learned today (Depending on the size of the audience and the remaining time left for the session, the trainer can either read questions and all answers and let the participants say which is the correct, OR give the participants time to complete the quiz and then review it with them as a group afterward.) Food Safety for Super Star Nutrition Lesson Plan Script Page 4 of 5
(Poll audience) Are there any questions? (Answer as many questions as time permits. You may have to tell an audience member that you d be happy to discuss that question further with them individually, after the lesson ends.) So, do your part to help prevent illness and disease wash your hands frequently! Thank you very much for your participation here today! (Time Permitting, the trainer may go through the Suggested Other Activities and Suggested 1-minute Messages sections below with audience) Questions and Answers - 10 minutes Suggested Other Activities: Hand washing can be made into a fun activity for children, instead of a chore when they find a fun way to relate to it. To help support and reinforce a handwashing lesson for children, leaders could have children do the handwashing activity in the lesson above. To follow-up the lesson, use the coloring exercises you can download at the following web links: o Wash and dry your hands before you make or eat a snack or meal o Wash your hands well with soap and warm water Suggested 1-Minute Messages to reinforce this Statement: Hang a paper towel roll dispenser by all sinks used to wash hands, so towels can be readily available to everyone who needs one. Provide a trashcan immediately outside the bathroom door for discarding paper towels after use. Door handles can re-contaminate clean hands! Keep hand lotion available at all handwashing sinks to help prevent chapping and soothe dry skin. Use paper towels to turn off water taps to help stop re-contamination of clean hands.
