In addition to drinking water, try snacking on these fruits and vegetables that are more than 90 percent water: strawberries, watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers, baby carrots and celery. July 2017 A Little Bit Country While celebrating our country on the Fourth of July, make time to also celebrate country music. National Country Music Day, observed every July 4, is an unofficial holiday created by the Country Music Disc Jockey Association in the 1950s. Originally, the holiday honored singer Jimmie Rodgers, called the father of country music, and the genre he helped pioneer.

2 2 Guess? Logic Problem Beverly s ice cream cone has five scoops of ice cream, each one a different flavor: vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, blueberry and bubble gum. Using the clues below, can you determine the order of the flavors on her cone? 1. The bottom flavor has 10 letters. 2. Vanilla is touching both chocolate and blueberry. 3. Vanilla is somewhere below the chocolate scoop but above the bubble gum scoop. (Answer: From top to bottom, the flavors of ice cream are chocolate, vanilla, blueberry, bubble gum and strawberry.) Each month we celebrate birthdays for our residents. We have cake with everyone. This is a time to announce who is having a birthday for that month. We sing Happy Birthday to them and enjoy a time of celebration. This is on Fridays at 2 p.m. during Entertainment. Cake for July Birthdays July 28th, at 2 pm Understanding Sunscreen Wearing sunscreen is a safe, easy way to protect your skin from sun damage that can lead to premature aging, sunburn and skin cancer. The ingredients in sunscreen work together to block or absorb the sun s ultraviolet rays before they reach your skin. Choose products labeled as broadspectrum, which means they protect against both UVA rays (the cause of wrinkles and age spots) and UVB rays (the cause of sunburn). The Food and Drug Administration recommends sunscreens with a sun protection factor of at least 15, while dermatologists advise using SPF 30 or above. This number refers to the percentage of the sun s rays that the sunscreen blocks. SPF 15 filters out 93 percent of incoming rays, and SPF 30 filters out 97 percent. About minutes before you go outside, apply 1 ounce about a full shot glass of sunscreen to the parts of your body not covered by clothing. Don t forget the tops of your feet, the tips of your ears and any exposed areas of your scalp.

July Is Blueberry Month By Emily Beard This month I am writing about the health benefits of eating blueberries because July is National Blueberry Month. In terms of U.S. fruit consumption, blueberries rank only second to strawberries in popularity. Blueberries also happen to be one of the few fruits that are actually native to North America. Blueberries are often labeled a super food with vitamins C and K! There are two common types: High bush blueberries: This is the most commonly grown species in the U.S. Low bush blueberries: Often referred to as wild blueberries, these are typically smaller and richer in certain antioxidants. Blueberries are believed to contain one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of ALL commonly consumed fruits, vegetables, spices and seasonings. Just as the bird sings or the butterfly soars, because it is his natural characteristic, so the artist works. Alma Gluck Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Muhammad Ali Literature and butterflies are the two sweetest passions known to man. Vladimir Nabokov Love is like a butterfly, a rare and gentle thing. Dolly Parton I dreamed I was a butterfly, flitting around in the sky; then I awoke. Now I wonder: Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man? Chuang Tzu

I hope you enjoy the following facts about this nutritious vegetable! Asparagus was believed to have originated in Greece 2,500 years ago. Asparagus comes in three colors: white (grown underground to avoid sunlight, and very popular in Northwest Europe), green and purple. Asparagus is part of the lily family. After planting, it takes three years to harvest asparagus for the first time. From a health aspect, asparagus acts as a diuretic and a laxative. Michigan is ranked third in producing asparagus nationally. Our state produces 25 million pounds of asparagus annually (a market value of $15 million) on 11,000 acres. Prime growing season is early May to late June. Asparagus is 93 percent water. Five ounces of asparagus provide 3 grams of fiber and only 20 calories, and it is fat-free. Asparagus is a great source of folic acid, potassium, protein and vitamins A and C. Visit an American House today and enjoy some asparagus. Building Services Check Out Our Beauty Salon!
