3 THE HAPPY BRAIN It s natural to like to do things that make us feel good. There are chemicals that are stimulated in our brains that activate pleasure. Both healthy and unhealthy behaviors can trigger these positive reward feelings. Understand what brain rewarding chemicals do and how to seek healthy pleasures: Dopamine. Sometimes known as the happiness chemical, plays on the anticipation of something positive. Plan a trip, write down attainable goals, or cook a healthy meal. All of these actions will get your anticipation and motivation chemicals flowing. Oxytocin. Also known as the love molecule and is associated with positive social interactions. Touch is a great way to raise your levels of oxytocin. Petting an animal, hugging someone, or holding hands increases oxytocin. In addition, spending time with a loved one, sharing a meal, or saying I love you are all great ways to boost happiness. Serotonin. Serotonin is a mood stabilizer that is sensitive to diet. Cutting down on sugar can help increase serotonin. Spending time outdoors, exercising, and getting a massage are excellent ways to boost this mood stabilizing chemical. Endorphins. This chemical is one you often hear people talking about after a workout. That s because it is released after exercise and works as a pain reducer. Listening to music, exercising, laughing, or eating moderate amounts of spicy foods and chocolate can all boost endorphins. The great news is that we can impact the release of these brain-rewarding chemicals. It is important to remember that there are plenty of healthy ways to boost these chemicals and maximize your happiness. 3
4 Budget-Friendly SUMMER FOODS Summer is here! That means more time outside and lighter foods to combat the heat. Choosing healthy foods that will keep you energized for fun, does not have to break the bank. HERE ARE SOME GREAT OPTIONS FOR BUDGET FRIENDLY, FUELING FOODS: Snack well. Peanut butter, hummus, vegetables, almonds and plain popcorn are all excellent options for filling you up with nutrients. Peanut butter and almonds are rich in protein and popcorn is packed with fiber. These are also super portable, so you can take them with you. Eat more kale. This trendy lettuce is still an inexpensive option for punching up salads and other dishes. Chop and cook with fish or eggs, and mix with your favorite salad toppings for antioxidant-rich, filling summer meals. Drink more smoothies. Bags of frozen fruits go a long way when it comes to making smoothies. Mix with peanut butter, juice, water, or another liquid to add flavor. There are plenty of ways to eat exciting, summer-friendly, and healthy foods on a budget. Think creatively and you will be the envy of other beach-goers. Cucumber Sushi 2 medium cucumbers, halved ¼ avocado, thinly sliced 1 yellow pepper thinly sliced 2 Tbsp lite cream cheese Cut each cucumber in half and remove seeds with a small spoon to create a long hollow tube. Stuff the cucumber tube with cream cheese, avocado and peppers. Slice cucumber rounds into one inch thick pieces and serve. 4

9 In The Spotlight At LVT THE LONGEST DAY The Summer Solstice was last Thursday, June 21, Our residents had the opportunity to enjoy every minute of the longest day of the year, with community activities peppered throughout the day into evening. Leslee Stephens, Living Well & Fitness Director, explained the inspiration behind LVT s The Longest Day event. As a member of the ICAA, or International Council on Active Aging, she discovered a magazine article in 2017 pertaining to a Campaign Day for the Alzheimer s Association. Last year, LVT held its first Campaign Day for Alzheimer s. This year, Leslee expanded the Campaign. She designed various activities, each pertaining to Alzheimer s, in order to educate and stimulate the participants. Tai Chi slows and eases the mind. Deborah Joswick, a local fitness instructor, led a Tai Chi class in the quiet morning. The Aqua Exercise class followed Tai Chi. Leslee s enthusiasm kept everyone engaged and active while enjoying our beautiful pool. Laughter is the best medicine. William Mahon, Director of Restaurant Operations, donned the role of Bingo Fun Master. Krista Dragojevich, Activities Director, was LVT s honorary Vanna White for the day. About 40 people attended, sipping delectable mimosas while hoping their numbers were called. There were all sorts of prizes, ranging from boxes of Cracker Jack to household items. As William noted, There is always a good time to be had at Bingo Fun! Music Trivia was a fun event for everyone. The healing power of music helps individuals who are struggling with a wide variety of cognitive and physical impairments. Music helps elicit and connect us with memories and the goal of improving overall health and well-being. Music Trivia was a fun way to stimulate the mind while reminiscing on some great tunes. Ask Leslee about the DVD Alive Inside. Krista Dragojevich, Director of Activities, explained the idea behind the Paint and Ball Toss. The effect of Art with someone with Alzheimer s is transformative. It 9
10 improves cognitive function, ability of daily living and behavioral and psychological symptoms of seniors with Alzheimer s. Some seniors have never painted before being diagnosed and are fabulous artists. This is because we are giving them another tool to express themselves if they otherwise couldn t. It helps with those who are verbally challenged because of the progression be able to communicate through Art or another creative outlet. Our residents enjoyed the paint ball toss and creating a lasting memory for our community. Using non-traditional painting techniques, they covered canvas and made a wonderful abstract painting. Back to the pool! Water exercise offers great resistance and a fabulous way to work out, providing benefits to the mind and body. Water volleyball is one example, and the Aqua Glow Dance Party was a pool party like no other. The pool area was adorned with strands of white lights. Residents exercised and danced in the water, wearing glow sticks formed as bracelets, necklaces, and eye glasses. Black lights Illuminated neon swirls of color above the waves and splashes. In addition to an enjoyable, stimulating day filled with learning and connection, LVT s The Longest Day collected $ in donations, exceeding last year s fundraising goal by $ Thank you to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause! 10
