1 June 2018 Issue Father s Day Lunch We are planning a special lunch on Father s day, the 17 th at 12:30pm. Please RSVP no later than June 11 th and let us know your plans, if you will be attending and how many guests your loved one can expect. My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me. ~Jim Valvano HAPPY FATHER S DAY! Classic Car Show Tuesday, June 19, 6:00 PM Join us for this free event! Door Prizes, Hot Dogs, Popcorn, & Root Beer Floats! Also, Music by the Sea Cruisers! All are welcome!
2 Administrator s Note This Spring has definitely shown us the true definition of Michigan weather, we have seen rain, snow, and extreme heat. The nice warm days gave us a chance to get some good use out of the patio furniture. The residents enjoyed spending time together and having watermelon on the porch. Along with enjoying this end to spring, everyone at Green Acres of Mason has been busy. Sue put together a fabulous Farmers Market, one that I am sure we will see return year after year. The local elementary schools have been stopping in! Alaiedon fifth graders put on a talent show, and Steele Street kids sang us some songs. Last but not least, the residents loved the new sand box treasure hunt activity! We are looking forward to some of our big events for this summer, and as usual you are all invited! On June 19th we will have our annual car show, this is a huge community event, so come one come all. Family council will be held on July 23rd, and we will take our first field trip to Hawk Island on July 28th. Feel free to attend any or all of our upcoming activities. If a big event is not for you, you are welcome to attend Lemonade in the shade on Thursday afternoons. I would also like to make mention of the Fourth of July. The Fireworks are set off right across the street from Green Acres. This makes Green Acres a prime spot to view that Ingham County Fireworks. Residents and Family are more than welcome to view the fireworks from the parking lot and surrounding lawn! The parking lot will not be open to the public. In order to keep everyone safe we ask that fireworks not be set off on Green Acres property. Thank you all, and I hope to see everyone this summer! Many Blessings, Cheri Weaver Chattin with Cathy Jo How wonderful to have the warm weather back! Our porch furniture is out and we are enjoying every minutes of sunshine! Our Lovely Ladies Tea Mother s Day Celebration was on May 10 th with Pianists Cheryl Beauchamp and Laura Johnson s students with New Song Studio providing entertainment. Our long awaited Spring Pot Luck was on May 17 th, always a blessing to have family events here. We celebrated two 101 yr. old birthdays in May and will be celebrating a 102 yr. old birthday in June! Amazing women! After celebrating Father s Day, we will have our Big Bang Community Event, the annual Classic Car Show on Tuesday, June 19 th. This event gets larger every year, bringing in 33 cars and approximately 200 people last year from this awesome community and, is one of our resident s most favorite events. Then we roll into 4 th Of July Celebrations and Fair Time. Enjoy these beautiful months of Spring! God Bless, Cathy Jo Kortney s Korner Well folks, the heat is upon us, and so is the risk of dehydration. Did you know that up to 75% of your body weight is actually water? Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in. This is especially dangerous for our elderly loved ones! As we age, our bodies don t tell us as rapidly that we are thirsty. Not to mention, certain diseases and medications also pose a greater risk for dehydration. Such as the case with Alzheimer s and other Dementias, the elderly may have trouble communicating their thirst, we need to anticipate their needs and have fluids available at all times. Other means of hydration are: popsicles, clear broths, Gatorade, Pedialyte or Powerade & fruits with high water content, such as, watermelon, grapes or apples. If you must be outside during extreme heat, be sure you are taking frequent breaks in the shade and rehydrating yourself. If you begin to feel dizzy or lightheaded with muscle cramping, nausea and vomiting, you should immediately find shade and begin to rehydrate. These are all signs of heat exhaustion and if not treated can lead to heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms include confusion, high fever and minimal sweating. Here s to a wonderful and healthy summer!! Kortney Hamill, R.N.
