President s Message The show season is in full swing now for those of us who show. Majors have been hard to come by at the all-breed shows. It seems the only time we have majors is when a specialty is tied in with the all-breed shows. And I would encourage performance exhibitors that have not tried obedience to try it now. With the changes that went into effect on May 1st of this year will find novice obedience, in my opinion, easier. The on-lead sit stay and down stay, gave me the confidence to consider putting Companion Dog titles on more of my bulldogs. The Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle will be holding their specialties on July 6th, 7th, & 8th with the all-breed shows at Puyallup, WA. Division V will be supporting the entries at the shows held in Boise, ID in October; this will be a new venture for Division V. So there will be lots of shows to look forward to in Plan on attending these shows and have fun with the Bulldoggers and Bulldogs. Our Division V quarterly meeting will be on Friday, July 6th, in Puyallup and members are invited to come to the meeting. Remember to get your rooms reserved for the Nationals, your ads in for the catalog, and any trophy donations into the National Committee. The Nationals will be here before we realize. Please remember the officers and the board are here for you. Please contact any of us if you have questions. 3 Breeder Referral As the Breeder Referral contact for the BCA, Div. V, I would like to remind all of the breeders that have been approved in our Division, that if you receive an or phone call, please answer it. If you do not have puppies, just let the person contacting you know that information. The biggest complaint I receive is that the person reaching to the people on Breeder Referral are not returning calls or s to him/her. We need to reach these people and help them get the bulldog they are looking for and maybe we will get new members. We will be able to educate them on not buying from color breeders or backyard breeders who are not health-testing. We as breeders need to do our part to help the people reaching out to us, even if it is only education and information. Thank you, Linda Kilgore

Health Committee submitted by Cheryl Knapp Cherry Eye is one of the most common issues that plague our breed. Although it doesn't appear to cause as much discomfort to the dog as the unsightly bulging reddish mass suggests, it can hinder proper tear production and lead to other eye irritation and infections. Cherry eye is often caused by weakened connective tissue that fails to hold the tear gland in place at the base of the third eyelid. The gland can then pop out of position and appears as a fleshy blob protruding out of the inside corner of the eye--and suddenly your adorable little puppy looks like something out of a horror movie! Here are a few preventative tips as well as surgical techniques used to bring those puppy-dog eyes back to their heart-stealing best. PREVENTION: In my experience cherry eye has reared it's blobby head around 3-to-7 months when my pups have been going through their peak growth spurts. I have found that if I can massage the gland back into proper position immediately before there is much redness or swelling--and continue to be diligent to do this as needed--that the gland will often stay in place once the pup is past this rapid phase of growth. I will also keep the eye lubricated and/or apply steroid drops prescribed by my vet as well as attempt to keep the puppy from a lot of excessive roughhousing. Since I do a lot of performance sports with my dogs I also start them on Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements. Here are a few tips for HOME REMEDIES to hopefully avoid cherry eye surgery on your Bulldog: PHYSICAL MASSAGE: Close the eyelid and firmly press/massage the gland back into position with your thumb using a circular motion. With the eyelid closed the gland is protected by the soft tissue as you press towards the inside corner of the eye. The longer the gland is left in its prolapsed state, the more swollen and irritated it can become and the more difficult it will be to successfully press it back into place--so try to stay on top of the issue and manipulate it back as soon as possible!

BLACK TEA: Place a black tea bag in 1 cup of boiling water and steep until cool enough to touch. You can use 5-6 drops of this tea solution in each eye 3-4 times a day for one week. Black tea contains tannins that are anti-microbial and reduce the irritation in the eye. The cooled tea bag can also be held against the eye. HONEY WATER: Add 1 teaspoon of raw, local (unpasteurized) honey to 1/2 cup of hot water. Cool and place 4-5 drops in the eye 3-4 times per day. You can also use a combination of tea & honey. GLUCOSAMINE/CHONTROITIN: Since cherry eye can be related to weak connective tissues, this supplement can help strengthen the strands of connective tissue that hold the gland in place. CORTICAL STEROID DROPS: Your vet can prescribe drops or ointment to reduce the swelling and address any infection that can develop due to the exposed and irritated gland. Keeping the eye lubricated as well as reducing the swelling will increase the chances of being able to massage the gland back into place. SURGICAL OPTIONS: In the case of a persistent or grossly enlarged gland that just won't stay put, there are several surgical options for correcting the issue: TACKING: The gland is placed back into position and "tacked" using sutures to attempt to maintain proper position. This option has the highest failure rate and is not worth subjecting your Bulldog to anesthesia. POCKET TECHNIQUE: A "pocket" is made within the third eyelid and the gland is pressed inside. MODIFIED MORGAN POCKET TECHNIQUE: A modification on the pocket technique where bends in the t-shaped cartilage of the third eyelid is corrected and reinforcing sutures are added to help hold it in place. A "tunnel" is formed in the third eyelid, enabling tear drainage.

REMOVAL: The removal of the gland used to be the treatment of choice for cherry eye, however most veterinary schools now emphasize the importance of saving the gland to prevent future issues with dry eye. This gland is responsible for about 40% of the tear production within the eye. In a survey of Bulldog breeders who have had experience with various methods of cherry eye treatment, removal of the gland was the overwhelming choice. Several breeders had tried other techniques, only to have the cherry eye recur--and their dog(s) ended up having to undergo general anesthesia multiple times before the problem was corrected. Every breeder who responded said that the dogs that had undergone removal of the gland never encountered issues with dry eye--even in old age--yet their dogs who had alternative techniques used had developed the problem. It was a common consensus that a dog would develop dry eye only if predisposed to the issue, regardless of the gland removal. Several breeders had said that their dog(s) were able to comfortably tolerate the procedure to remove the gland without general anesthesia. Their vet merely uses numbing drops in the eye and trims out the gland--or, in some cases the portion of the gland protruding above the third eyelid was removed and the remainder was left in place. One breeder was at a specialty show when a recurring cherry eye presented itself in her dog. She had the procedure done using eye drops to deaden the eye and her dog was able to show the next day! Some vets use scalpels to cut out the gland, others utilize a laser, but removal appears to be the most reliable and trouble-free method of treatment according to the experience of multiple Bulldog breeders over several decades of cherry eye encounters. A Bulldog pup with cherry eye-- before & after having the gland removed

I personally am all in favor of a method which eliminates the need to put my Bulldog under general anesthesia! Many Bulldog owners may have a bit of an uphill battle finding a vet willing to do the gland removal but I take pretty seriously the opinion--and practical experience--of many of our wonderful Bulldog breeders!

Bulldog Club of America The purpose of the BCA Ambassador for Health Award program is to promote betterment of the Breed through health testing by recognizing Bulldogs, owned by BCA members, which have met specific health testing requirements. Overview and Deadline: Each eligible Bulldog will be awarded a certificate suitable for framing which indicates the level of achievement and details the health certifications the dog has successfully completed. Certificates will be awarded annually to all Bulldogs whose owners have submitted a completed application and the required verification to the Health Committee by the deadline date. In order to be recognized as an Ambassador for Health and/or Health Pioneer Award recipient at the BCA Nationals, completed applications must be received by the 1st day of the month immediately preceding the month in which that year s Nationals is scheduled. For 2018, because Nationals will be held in October, the application deadline is September 1. 9 Bulldog Club of America The purpose of the BCA Ambassador for Health Award program is to promote betterment of the Breed through health testing by recognizing Bulldogs, owned by BCA members, which have met specific health testing requirements. Application Requirements: The Bulldog that is applying for the Ambassador for Health Award must be owned or co-owned by a BCA member in good standing. If the dog is co-owned, the co-owner who is a member of BCA must submit the application. It is not necessary to be a BCA member at the time the tests were performed. All awards are designed to be a one-time award for each recipient, rather than a recurring, annual award. Additional levels may be applied for the next year provided all verification is received by the Health Committee by the deadline date and the recognition award will be given at the appropriate upgraded level. Pioneers of Health: In addition, any Bulldog receiving an Ambassador for Health Award that has also participated in any BCA-initiated or recognized health research project will also receive a Health Pioneer designation which will be included on their Ambassador for Health certificate. OFA EYE is considered part of the Health Pioneer recognition since at this time the Ambassador for Health program is comprised of permanent certifications. A passing OFA EYE certificate that is current the calendar year of the award is required. All tests must be submitted to OFA and be part of their public database. Certificates for BAER hearing testing, CHIC DNA repository and OFA Spinal Database may also be submitted for inclusion in the Health Pioneer designation. Proof of participation is required for any other BCA-initiated health studies in order to be included in the Health Pioneer designation. The Health Pioneer can also be applied for as a stand-alone certificate. However, OFA EYE certification will not be considered for the stand-alone certification. 24 Alaska - submitted by Neil Koeniger We had two shows with the Alaska Kennel Club June 23 and 24, in Anchorage. The Bulldog entry was small, but we had a good time, and the dogs did well. Joline Bernard s bitch special Rosie (CH Last Frontier My Heart Will Go On) took BOB the first show with our boy Frank (CH Last Frontier Frankly My Dear) taking BOS. Robert Gillam s bitch Magnolia (Last Frontier Lady Magnolia) took WB for another point. Rosie then went on to get a Group 2 placement. Frank wasn t entered the second day, and Rosie took BOB again. This time Joline s bred by bitch Eve (Last Frontier All About That Bass) took WB and picked up another point for herself. No love for Rosie in group but she showed nicely. The Non-Sporting Dog Group Club of Alaska also hosted their final A Match before AKC licensure on the 23rd. Both Frank and Rosie entered in the Adult Handling category. Both showed very well and made the cut in a large entry even though they didn t ultimately finish in the ribbons. The shows were made especially interesting as there had been recent bear sightings near the showgrounds. Upon the recommendation of the Fish & Game Department, exhibitors had to pick up their areas each night after the shows and remove any bait, food, and coolers. Trash cans were removed at night and returned the next day, and the RV campers on the grounds had to bring their grills, trash, and food into their RVs. The obedience competitors took even greater precautions. They had a large sign posted conspicuously by their rings which read: No Bears Allowed!- Unless Competing In The Trials. Fortunately, we didn t have any bear visitors during the shows although we did find some reasonably fresh scat about 10 feet behind the setup area which had folks keeping their eyes open.

Bulldog Club of Utah Submitted by Liz Coates Our Specialties were fabulous, and our most significant entry for many years. We were honored to host the Division V Specialty this year. Great judging by Calvin Dykes in the classes, breed, and junior showmanship. Scott Johnson didn t have a large entry in Sweepstakes, but they were lovely. Hank Williams judged at the BCU show in the afternoon. Kriss Durrant, the perpetual hospitality hostess, managed to serve breakfast and lunch, to not only the Bulldoggers, but to the Doberman Pinscher, and Great Basin Non-Sporting Groups as well. The Ways and Means committee, Becklyn Thee, Jessica Chavez-Smith, and Kristina Pulsipher, were on hand with great merchandise: our new tee shirts with logo by Will Clayton and Jimmy Bane were a big hit. Baskets donated by Nancy Lloyd and Debi Clark made for a great raffle table. The talk of the show was the trophy table: Will Clayton did a fantastic job! Not sure how he will top it next year, but he s already working on it. Thanks to all our club members. Small as we are, it takes us all. The Beehive Cluster, once again, managed to bring in Breeder judges for us. Thanks to Cathy Eke, and to Dean and Eva Dickey. The 11th annual open house was well attended. Word was out early that Floyd Thompson would be cooking his Cajun shrimp and pulled pork tacos. Not sure how many folks showed up. At one point I counted 40; fortunately, it was a lovely day, so that people could spill over to the outdoors. We were pleased to have Cathy Eke and the Dickeys join us; so often, the judges have already headed home. Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows, the open house and/or supported us with trophy donations. Couldn t do it without you. Kristina organized a Dog Wash on April 22 at Dirty Johnson s Self Service Dog Wash. Thanks to Verdi & Pam White for the use of the facility. On hand to help were Becklynn Thee, Kimo Pokini & Stan Stensrud, who tackled two very matted Great Pyrenees, Jessica & Brett Chavez, Adam Pulsipher, and Anna Dolegiewicz Stewart manned the toenail station. They raised a tidy bundle of $700 for Rescue. Thanks so much to all of them! Next on the agenda: Club BBQ at Debi Clark's home, and also Canine Good Citizen in September.

Rescue Report Bulldog Club of Utah submitted by Susan Tibbitts The Bulldog Club of Utah/Rescue has taken in 11 dogs since the end of March. It seems that as soon as one finds a home, another is there to take its' place. About the time we declare that what we are getting this year, is older-much older dogs, we get a youngster. Penelope, not yet 3, came to us when her owner s terminal cancer seemed to have vanished. Great news, but that meant he had to go back to his job in Florida, and there would be no one to care for her. Before that, we welcomed Frank the Tank: just 7-yrsold. Frank started out in Anchorage, Alaska, and was passed on to 5 subsequent owners, all of whom gave glowing accounts of the dog, but didn t have the time, before he came to our Rescue. Once he recovered from being neutered, it took a little while for Frank to find a home once again, everyone loved the dog, he loved everyone, but no one followed through. The great news is that he has found a fabulous home with a family that had recently lost their Bulldog at 11.5 years old. Then there is Brutus; also 7. His owners in Page, Arizona were moving to Phoenix and didn t want to take him with them. Their answer? Have the groomer find him a home. Best Friends contacted us when they got wind of the situation, and Liz Coates made arrangements to transport him to Beaver, where he hitched a ride to SLC. Another beautiful, healthy boy that gets along with everyone, including screaming children. So many of the dogs don t tolerate other dogs that it makes it quite challenging to find homes that don t have dogs already. I ve said it before, and I ll repeat it it can t all be lousy breeding and temperament. People need to expose their dogs to other dogs and other experiences give them a fighting chance at getting a home. Our Fundraiser Wizard has been hard at work: in April, Kristina organized a dog wash at Dirty Johnson s self-service dog wash in East Millcreek. Seventeen dogs, including Bulldogs, an assortment of other breeds and 2 really, really, really matted Great Pyrenees mixes kept everyone busy. We even had volunteers doing toenails! Thanks to Bulldoggers Kristina and Adam, Jessica & Brett, Becklyn, and honorary Bulldoggers Stan & Kimo! We also had Facebook followers bring their dogs, how swell was that? Kristina is currently in the throes of our Summer Daze Facebook Auction. Once she is able to make sentences with verbs again, she will push forward on Strut Your Mutt, scheduled for October 13th this year. Rescue could not take care of the dogs that we do without her fundraising skills and her social media disorder.

How I Was Rescued By A Bulldog by Jessica Chavez-Smith, BCU member See this cute girl? Her name is Bella Lemonatta Chavez-Smith. Yes, she has a long name, and we use it as her 'stage' name. If she looks familiar, she was in a Super Bowl commercial for Mountain America Credit Union and has been in an Instagram ad for Beggin' Strips. That might be her stage name, but at home, we call her "Bella Bean," "Lala," "baby girl," "Bell Bells," just to name a few. You see I rescued her about 4 years ago from the Utah Bulldog Rescue and did so after a loss of my very first bulldog. Ms. Bella and I have been through so much together in the past 4 years, and she has taught me more than any college education could give me. In the 4 years with Bella in my life, she has recovered from 2 knee surgeries, we bought a new home, found love, and most recently she has helped me battle breast cancer. You know how they say "things happen for a reason?" Well, Bella is my reason for everything; little did I know that she was placed in my life to help me with my battle. When she had her knee surgery, she taught me resilience, patience, and how just to take it easy and recover. When I found a new home, she taught me how to appreciate my new home by just sitting out in the sun, and enjoying my new space. She taught me how to love unconditionally without limit; which lead me to my husband (who loves her as much as I do). When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, she knew, and she went into action by always being by my side, showing me love when I needed it. When I was in pain, she was there to comfort me, even if it was just to lay her head on mine, or touch me slightly with her massive paw. All the things that she taught before helped me through the battle, and I honestly don't know if I could have done it without her...my sidekick! To say that I love Bella, more than my husband...just kidding...kinda...is an understatement. I would do anything to have her in my life and by my side forever. Obsessive? 34 Applications are now open for Get those health certs done and get recognized! Deadline to apply for 2018 is September 1. Information and application are available on the BCA website. Contact Melanie Trichler or Cheryl Knapp with any questions. CHIC (Canine Health Information Center) Your Bulldog can earn CHIC certification by completing the OFA patella, cardiac, and tracheal hypoplasia screenings/certs. One new CHIC Bulldog this past quarter with ties to Division V: o IROC Sweet Cherry Pi AKCCHF (AKC Canine Health Foundation) Grant for Bulldog Pulmonic Stenosis Research After a formal request and backing from the BCA, the AKCCHF has approved a grant to Stern Lab for continued research of pulmonic stenosis and accompanying coronary artery anomalies in the Bulldog breed. Dr. Stern can now move forward and (hopefully) in the near future narrow down the search for the specifics to come up with a DNA test for Pulmonic Stenosis. BCA has already put a lot of its own funds into this research. Many Bulldoggers have submitted dogs for the tests to help in this research, which is excellent! Updated Health Screening Matrix and Health Screening Tri-fold Both the Health Screening Matrix and Health Screening Tri-fold pamphlet were updated in February and are available on the BCA website. Division V Health Events (clinics, seminars, etc.) If any of our Division V clubs have health events (clinics, seminars, etc.) planned for 2018, please let me know so I can help promote them. SWOBC will be hosting an OFA eye, cardiac, and patella clinic in May at the Klamath Falls, OR shows. Vet Outreach Program The Vet Outreach Program is moving slowly. If you accepted a packet from me earlier this year, please remember to take it with you to your next vet visit. While you re there, take a few minutes to go through the packet with your vet and ask for their support. There are also a few tri-fold pamphlets that they can keep on-hand to distribute to their clients who are considering breeding. IMPORTANT! Try to have your vet complete the feedback form while you re there so you can take the form and return it to Elizabeth Milam. If you aren t able to take the form back during the visit, we risk the chance that the vet will be too busy or forget to return it. If you absolutely must leave the form with the vet, please encourage them to return it to Elizabeth in a timely manner. If you would like a packet to take to your vet, please contact Melanie Trichler (mnmbulldogs@comcast.net). Legislative (Kaler Howard): No Report Long Range Planning Committee (Ed Harris): No Report Newsletter (Debi Clark): Newsletter is coming along and appreciates all the submissions SOP (Jeff Ryman): Ways and Means Committee (Kaler Howard, Jeff & Winn Ryman): Lapel pins have been a steady seller, all monies coming in is now profit. Social Media Focal/Volunteer (Melanie Trichler) Reported that the Division s Facebook site hasn t had a lot of activity. Looking for a volunteer to take over.
