1 Message from the Div V President The year has started, and we are down in memberships for our Division. If we go much lower in numbers, we will lose another Councilor position. We went from four Councilors to three this past year. We do not want to drop to two. Encourage people who own bulldogs, or buy one from you to join the Bulldog Club of America. I know it is hard when some owners just want their dogs and do not join organizations like this. I am guilty of not encouraging more, so let s all try to become more active in this effort. The Oregon State Bulldog Club specialty and the South West Oregon Bulldog Club specialties finished. Everyone who attended these shows had lots of fun. The Bulldog Club of Utah will be holding their specialty on May 2 with Sweepstakes and conformation; Div V will hold a concurrent speciality the same day. Try to attend this show; it is a lot of fun and a nice venue. There will be a generic Div. V concurrent specialty on May 12th during the Klamath Dog Fanciers shows. Hopefully, there will be five majors in four days. The Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle will be holding their specialties with the July all-breed shows at Puyallup, WA. Division V will be supporting the entries at the shows held in Boise, ID in October which will be a new venture for Division V. There will be lots of shows to look forward to in Please remember the officers and the board are here for you. Please contact any of us if you have questions, remember that this is your Division. 3 Breeder Referral As the Breeder Referral contact for the BCA, Div. V, I would like to remind all of the breeders that have been approved in our Division, that if you receive an or phone call, please answer it. If you do not have puppies, just let the person contacting you know that information. The biggest complaint I receive is that the person reaching to the people on Breeder Referral are not returning calls or s to him/her. We need to reach these people and help them get the bulldog they are looking for and maybe we will get new members. We will be able to educate them on not buying from color breeders or backyard breeders who are not health-testing. We as breeders need to do our part to help the people reaching out to us, even if it is only education and information. Thank you, Linda Kilgore

Overview and Deadline: Each eligible Bulldog will be awarded a certificate suitable for framing which indicates the level of achievement and details the health certifications the dog has successfully completed. Certificates will be awarded annually to all Bulldogs whose owners have submitted a completed application and the required verification to the Health Committee by the deadline date. In order to be recognized as an Ambassador for Health and/or Health Pioneer Award recipient at the BCA Nationals, completed applications must be received by the 1st day of the month immediately preceding the month in which that year s Nationals is scheduled. For 2018, because Nationals will be held in October, the application deadline is September 1. 5 Bulldog Club of America The purpose of the BCA Ambassador for Health Award program is to promote betterment of the Breed through health testing by recognizing Bulldogs, owned by BCA members, which have met specific health testing requirements. Application Requirements: The Bulldog that is applying for the Ambassador for Health Award must be owned or co-owned by a BCA member in good standing. If the dog is co-owned, the co-owner who is a member of BCA must submit the application. It is not necessary to be a BCA member at the time the tests were performed. All awards are designed to be a one-time award for each recipient, rather than a recurring, annual award. Additional levels may be applied for the next year provided all verification is received by the Health Committee by the deadline date and the recognition award will be given at the appropriate upgraded level. Pioneers of Health: In addition, any Bulldog receiving an Ambassador for Health Award that has also participated in any BCA-initiated or recognized health research project will also receive a Health Pioneer designation which will be included on their Ambassador for Health certificate. OFA EYE is considered part of the Health Pioneer recognition since at this time the Ambassador for Health program is comprised of permanent certifications. A passing OFA EYE certificate that is current the calendar year of the award is required. All tests must be submitted to OFA and be part of their public database. Certificates for BAER hearing testing, CHIC DNA repository and OFA Spinal Database may also be submitted for inclusion in the Health Pioneer designation. Proof of participation is required for any other BCA-initiated health studies in order to be included in the Health Pioneer designation. The Health Pioneer can also be applied for as a stand-alone certificate. However, OFA EYE certification will not be considered for the stand-alone certification. To apply, access the Ambassador for Health Award application online at: Any questions, please contact a Division V Health Committee representative: Melanie Trichler mnmbulldogs@comcast.net Cheryl Knapp sittingbullies@comcast.net

6 Health Committee - submitted by Cheryl Knapp Celebrating Our Uber Senior Bulldogs Years ago I heard a prominent Bulldog breeder tell me that most Bulldogs live to be around 8-9 years old--anything more than that should be considered a bonus. Recently we've been seeing more and more of our breed living well into their second decade, and I've discovered several who have been enjoying life well into their teens. These are what I call our "Uber- Seniors" and I thought it would be fun to hear some of the secrets to their incredible longevity. I'm sure you'll all enjoy reading about these stalwart seniors and we can all hopefully glean a few tips that may help more of our beloved breed join the ranks of these golden-agers. When asked about any special care or diet, Nancy offered the following tips: "Tubby was given CBD Oil, Pine Bark and Turmeric regularly. I used Frankincense on growths and sore joints as well as Turmeric mixed with Coconut Oil on wounds or scrapes. Tubby developed a few fatty tumors in his senior years but the vet was hesitant to remove them due to Tubby's cardiomyopathy. Tubby, owned by Nancy Wells, lived to be 13 years, 9 Spanky in his prime, around 3.5 years old Both "Spanky" and his housemate "Stella" owned by Julie Parrino of Redondo Beach, CA lived to attain the "Uber-Senior" status! Here are Julie's secrets for their longevity... Both of my Bullies lived to be over 14 years old. I cooked a grain-free diet for them and kept them lean. They had hardly any health issues until they were older and began experiencing age-related challenges such as macrodegeneration. Their vet told me that keeping them at a healthy weight and feeding a grainfree diet helped reduce the chances of breathing, joint and inflammation-related issues." Spanky at 14.9 years

7 Stella, still looked amazing at 14.5 years old! His housemate, Stella at 3 years old, was also kept at a healthy weight "Winnie", owned by Kathleen Damaso-Assarone is still going strong at 14.5 years old! "Winnie was born in October 2003 ad is almost 14.5 years old. We've fed her Iams Lamb & Rice almost her entire life. She hates baths, hates getting her folds cleaned and hates getting her nails clipped--so we've done these things very sparingly throughout her life. My husband and I joke that she's lived so long due to a healthy level of "neglect". What she's had is lots of love and attention. We've always treated her like our baby--she's gone on vacations with us, sleeps with us and is by our side almost all day long." Winnie when she first came home, Winnie in her prime, and Winnie looking terrific at 14.5!

8 Meet "Pandora", owned by Luciano Gulin of Curitiba, Brazil. Pandora is 14.5 years and counting! "Pandora is 14.5, and until a month ago never had any major health issues despite her chronic joint disease which was treated nearly half of her life with Cosequin DS. She was mostly fed with Pro Plan Sensitive Skin, and for the last two years, Hills Healthy Mobility. She always eats a piece of nearly everything we eat, so I can not say that she was fed only healthy dog food! I'd say her genetics were what helped her most. She is not as short and thick as other Bulldogs. For most of her life she was a 50 pound Bully--now she's old and is around 46 pounds. She exercised a lot when she was younger, but I can tell you that she has behaved like a senior since she was 7-8. She has slowed down a lot since then. She has kidney problems now but she's getting treatment." Pandora as a puppy Pandora was incredibly athletic when in her prime Pandora, 14.5 and still going strong!

9 Meet the fabulous "Meatball" owned by Virginia Levey--still happy at 14.5 years old! Here's her story: Ms. Meatball is 14 years and 5 months. She will be 15 on October 9th. She is doing fantastic. We have always given her daily face, ears and neck massages as well as whole body massages--she loves them and so do we! Breakfast is always either oatmeal, corn flakes or Cheerios--maybe a poached egg at times. All with a smidge of milk. She's given lots of water throughout the day and gets 4 walks during the day.lunch is homemade chicken soup--she just loves her orzo with lots of fresh carrots, parsley, celery, chicken and a small amount of onion with Locatelli cheese on top! Snacks...fruit...watermelon, cantaloupe...she loves chips at times and her Bugles. Dinner is a can of premium dog food mixed with her turmeric and fish oil on top. Snack. Walk...bed...repeat. We rescued her when she was 9 months old from Miami. The lady, who spoke no English, was getting rid of my girl for $500. When we got there she was out in the high heat in Florida sitting in a cage with an umbrella over her cage and a dirty pail of water. I asked to let her out so I could see her and when she did, her two small children ran around and kicked her! She was mine the minute I saw her! This lady may have not known how to care for a bulldog but I she did give me her file showing the $700+ bill that she'd paid because she had a very bad urinary infection and had to have a surgery. The stitches were still in her belly--along with fleas and ticks. We saved her in every sense of the word...and...she saved us as well. Meatball in her prime Meatball, 14.5 and celebrating life!

10 Susan Sigler of Colorado Springs, CO, is another owner who has been blessed with more than one "Uber-Senior" Bulldog. Susan tells us about her two girls, Isabella, who reached the ripe age of 15--and Emiley, who is still going strong at 16 years and 4 months! Susan and her family brought Emiley home while living in Oklahoma. In her words, "After a year of fun and giggles we just HAD to have another one!" They added Isabella to the family shortly after-- two girls from the same breeder but with very different personalities! Emiley, their tiny little lady, loves to snuggle and play--especially her favorite game of "tug-o-war". She spent a year attending obedience clases, thoroughly enjoying every moment--and quickly became the star of her class. Susan describes her as UBER smart and says that this wonderful little girl has been healthy since the day she brought her home. Other than being spayed following her first heat cycle and receiving her yearly vaccine boosters, she rarely darkened the door of her vet office. Emiley initially had a few minor ear infections but after discovering Zymox Otic, the issue totally vanished. At the first sign of symptoms, Susan simply squirted a bit in her ear, rubbed it around--and it was gone the next day! Susan highly recommends Zymox Otic cleanser, enzymatic solution and topical cream for those whose dogs have ear issues Their second addition to the family, Isabella, was fondly referred to as "a firecracker from the moment I brought her home" by owner, Susan. After initially taking her role as "ankle-biter" seriously, she turned her sites on her big sister, Emiley, and they became wonderful playmates. Although the family attempted to give this new baby girl the same education as her older sister, that idea was quickly abandoned as they discovered that this pup was "dumber than a box of hair"! The thing that the two pups did have in common was their wonderful health--other than her spay surgery and the correction of a small cherry eye she had no serious health issues throughout her long lifetime. Due to her more stocky build, Isabella, experienced a few interdigital cysts which Susan learned to treat with a solution of 50/50 Apple Cider Vinegar and Alcohol. If one presented itself, the cyst was sprayed with the mixture and it was gone within a day or two. Isabella loved going on walks, but her favorite activity was lounging on the couch with Susan. Isabella, adorable even at 15 years old! Emiley is still up for a snuggle at nearly 16.5 years!

11 Susan states that her girls received no special care other than having the freshest water everyday, the best dog food money could buy, lots of human food--and "more love than any Bulldog could ever be blessed to have". The girls were fed Royal Canin for much of their lives, but were switched to Fromm after the previous company changed their formula and started adding fillers. Meals are offered via free feeding, with lots of fresh water available at all times--and they also share a portion of whatever the family is eating: french toast, pancakes, cereal, lasagne, turkey, green beans, mashed potatoes...and, of course dessert! As they began to show signs of aging, Susan, who is into holistic treatments, developed her own "Protein Miracle" to help with their growing arthritis and stiffness: "Place 1/2 gallon of whole milk in a glass bowl and microwave until just before the boiling point. Remove and add 1/4 cup of fresh-squeezed lemon juice. Stir and allow to coagulate and cool. You will see the milk solids ("farmer's cheese") in a yellow liquid--this natural whey protein is wonderful for lubricating joints. After cooling the solids can be strained through a cheese cloth and the liquid placed in a jar and given about 1 to 1-1/2 cups a day to relieve sore joints." Susan cautions that although it can cause some looser stools, the improvement in their movement is amazing even after just a few days. "Stogie", owned by Mysty Vaughn of Maclean, IL lived an amazing 16 years and 9 months! "I really think genetics played a huge roll" says owner, Mysty Vaughn. "He never had health problems until old age set in. We only fed him Iams or Science Diet. He was also with young boys growing up so we took him to many track and cross country meets. Nothing says running mascot like a Bulldog. People always recognized and loved on him. He had only regular check ups and went to the groomer every couple of months. He always jumped in a vehicle wanting to go for a ride!" Stogie still looking wonderful at over 12 years of age Stogie at 16.5

12 And our GRAND PRIZE for the "SUPER UBER-SENIOR" goes to the amazing OLIVER, owned by Graham Simpson from the UK, who lived to celebrate his ***TWENTIETH BIRTHDAY*** and then some!!! Oliver's Story: Oliver was from the famous Brampton Bulldog kennel lines but didn't make the grade for showing so he was placed as a pet with Graham Simpson as a young puppy. Oliver enjoyed well over two decades of life in the beautiful English countryside with lots of exercise in the fresh air, home-cooked organic meals, lots of filtered water...and heaping portions of love from his doting owner.

13 Oliver lived a very active life, free of any health issues--with wonderful skin, eyes, teeth, etc. He had no surgeries during his long lifetime and all of his teeth remained intact and in great condition--all much to the amazement of his vet. He finally started declining during the last couple years of life, and about 6 months prior to his passing Oliver suffered a heart attack--but was resuscitated by his owner and placed on heart medication. During his last year of life when he began to be plagued by arthritis, Yumove and Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements were added to his diet. Graham took him for walks in his wagon--or as he calls it, his "trolley"--and when necessary he was carried out to potty or back into the house to be tucked into his king-sized orthopedic bed in his air-conditioned bedroom to rest.

14 ***As a bonus Graham has given us his basic recipe for OLIVER'S GRUB (below)*** *Steam in natural juices until tender Meat: 1 cup (rotate: beef, lamb, pork, fish or chicken) *Steam: Potatoes or Sweet Potatoes: 1/4 cup Broccoli: 1/4 cup Peas: 1/4 cup Brown Rice: 1/4 cup *Mash above ingredients & add: 1000mg Omega Fish Oil 2x100mg Enzyme (full spectrum) 1 T. 21 The Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle submitted by Dave Harrington The Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle is off to a pretty good start this year. Having our monthly meeting at a Restaurant/Pub that allows our bulldogs, has been a good time, with much accomplished and the patrons love the bullies. Now that the weather is hopefully, getting a bit nicer we are planning on meeting at a park. As a club, we have participated in the breed booth at the Seattle show. We had a great turnout of volunteers. Some folks with bullies, some without. Some that were not even members yet. It was so lovely to see all the support. The group also helped at Meet the Breed one of the days, and had everyone walking away saying, I love the Bulldogs. I spent both days at the show, and there were many positive comments on our bullies. Cheryl was there with Ducky and her other kids. The visitors to the show were very impressed with what the Bulldogs were able to do in the different rings. I was very impressed watching Ducky jump over a rail. At the Bremerton show in March, we had quite a group of owner/handlers in attendance. Both judges said that they were very impressed to see a group that was so supportive of each other, clapping when one or the other did well. This is what our club has always been like! We have fun and have fun with each other. I have talked with Cheryl Knapp, and she may also help in setting up a class that will teach the dogs some Rally and Obedience. This will be great; we need more bullies in Rally. Hosted by the Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle Handling Classes will be held to encourage conformation showmanship for Bulldogs and French Bulldogs. Free to all Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle and French Bulldog Club of Puget Sound members & guests. Time: 7:30 8:30 PM Thursday evenings Dates: May 10, 17, 31 Jun 7, 14, 21, 28 * Location: 8313 Riverview Rd Snohomish, WA Hosted by Jeff and Winn Ryman, 25+ year Bulldoggers and AKC Bulldog Judges. This class will be open to all levels and is intended to be practice for dogs and handlers needing ring time. New Handlers to the sport of dog showing as well as puppies are welcome. BCGS Member Ashley Wall has graciously provided this location. This is a private residence and there are no restrooms available on site. *Additional summer dates may be added based on continued interest and participation. Jeff Ryman is setting up handling classes in Snohomish on Thursdays starting May 10th. It would be great to see even more owner handlers in our club. There is also a group in the Tacoma area beginning to help each other with handling at a local class when we are all there; it is truly a bully class.

22 BCGS BREED BOOTH & MEET THE BREED SEATTLE KENNEL CLUB SHOW Dave and Cathy Harrington There was a ton of interest in our bulldogs at the booth and meet the breed. It was great to meet some volunteers in the breed booth. Some that I have never met before or haven't seen in a long time. This was very exciting for me. I also heard good comments as I was walking around about our club. People where excited about seeing Cheryl and her kids in the agility ring. Really a lot of talk about obedience and agility (people were very impressed). Whenever I was able to go up to the booth and visit it seemed that Sandy and Melanie had it all under control. (Thank you so much for holding the fort down). Sandy did this both days I really hope we didn't burn her out. I also think Sandy said we sold 15 shirts. That s not too bad! Another big thank you to all that helped behind the scenes and to everyone that gave up their time to make this great outing. Without all of you in the club coming together it wouldn't work. 10

26 Bulldog Club of Utah submitted by Liz Coates 2018 is well underway in Utah. A surprising mild winter decided to send in the Lion in March, but fortunately for us, thanks to Kim Beck at Positively Tailored Dog Training in Murray, all the Saint Patrick s Day celebrants stayed warm and dry. And there were many! Thanks to everyone who came out for the meeting and festivities. Kristina Pulsipher s 'Basket-O-Happiness' raised over $650 for rescue. You may want to make friends with lucky winner Dianne Taft. The Saint Paddy s Parade was a hit with our friends decked out in their Leprechaun finery. A great time had by all. Thanks to Will and Jimmy for putting it all together and for all the pizzas. Pizza on St. Patrick s Day for English Bulldogs? We are indeed an international group. Sherri Gibbons, author of What Oliver Taught Me, generously donated over $200 in royalties from her book sales on Amazon to our Rescue. She is apparently, giving all her royalties from the book to different rescue and shelter groups around the country. What Oliver Taught Me, (Oliver is a Bulldog) is about where we all started and what we learned along the way. Reading it, you hear yourself say, What! You didn t know that? and then you say, Oh, yeah, neither did I back then. Well worth the time and proceeds are going to a good cause. Thank you, Sherri Gibbons. If you can t find a copy, the club bought a few extras. Kristina has organized a Dog Wash for April 22nd. Check out the Website and Facebook for details. The Specialties are on track. Will has the trophies under control and has started on goodie bags. On April 28th, we ll have goodie bag stuffing party at Susan s; this will give us an opportunity to review where we are for the Specialties four-days later. For those of you who can come to the shows, don t forget the Open House on Saturday, May 5th. We have a new logo for the show designed by Will and Jimmy, and promoted by Kriss Durrant; there will be shirts. Jimmy Bane was instrumental in arranging a 'day of show deal' for Cystinuria, HUU, Degenerative Myelopathy and color testing with VetGen. Forms will be available at the show. Hope to see a lot of you there. The Utah Beehive Cluster has arranged for Bulldoggers to judge our guys three out of the four days. For those of you who don t know, the Cluster brings in all the ring equipment and sets up a day early, at no charge to us for the Specialties on Wednesday. The only way to thank them is to be sure you enter the All Breed shows as well as the Specialties. For the first time, the Great Basin Non-Sporting Group will have their specialties there on May 2nd. You can t enter your Bulldog, but all the other Non-Sporting Breeds will have something to do that day. Hope to see you all here! Debi Clark s Cracker, enjoying a good book. FYI this book does contain some colorful language, some might find offensive but obviously, Cracker is not bothered by a few cuss words.

27 Alaska submitted by Neil Koeniger Alaska held it first conformation shows of the year in Anchorage on March 23rd and 24th. There were three shows hosted by the Alaska Kennel Club and the Kenai Kennel Club. We had some new Bullies in the ring for the first time which was nice to see. Last Frontier Lady Magnolia Northpoint co-owned by Robert Gillam and Joline Bernard took WB in two of the shows for her first points. Joline Bernard s puppy Last Frontier All About That Bass took WB the last show to pick up her first points. Joline s special Rosie (CH Last Frontier My Heart Will Go On) took BOB in both of the Alaska Kennel Club shows. My special Frank (CH Last Frontier Frankly My Dear) took BOS in the Alaska Kennel Club Show and BOB in the Kenai Kennel Club show. He went on the take a Group 2 which was frosting on the cake. We now have a short break until our show season starts in earnest with four shows in Fairbanks over the Memorial Day weekend. Spring is starting to get here, and the snow is slowly melting off. This is also the calving season for the moose, and we have to keep an eye peeled for cows with newborn calves when we go for our walks. Those mama moose are pretty protective of their newborns. Oregon State Bulldog Club - submitted by Elizabeth Stephenson OSBC held their annual Specialty Show on 1/17/18 The club had a nice entry & it was so nice to see exhibitors who traveled far & wide. 30 Bulldog Club of UT Rescue Report Submitted by Susan Tibbets The Bulldog Club of Utah Rescue was finally able to get all of last year s dogs to great homes, right after the first of the year. As it turns out, that was an excellent thing. We took in 9 dogs in January, running the gamut from a stray with terrible but not un-fixable skin, to an 11-year old whose owner had died. A dog came from a fellow in the armed forces who deployed for the 2nd time. We took in Hurley, the all-time weirdest dog we ve ever gotten; she was an owner surrender to one of the local animal control agencies There were three other intact females in the house, and the girls were fighting; no surprise there. Hurley was small, about one-year-old, bony about 27 pounds, and barky. We thought no way this could be a Bulldog. We ran a contest What On Earth Is She? There were lost of guesses for Bulldog- Boxer mixes coming in, Bulldog-Russell Terrier, and one that pegged her as an alien. We ordered up a genetic profile: Hurley is 100% Bulldog. We were speechless. Maybe someone s miniature program went wrong. Thankfully, she found a home with one of the techs at the veterinary clinic we use; she was looking for Pocket Boxer for her husband. Hurley is now is running their house these days. Shelby, who is about 9-yrs-old, was surrendered by her owner pending his anticipated deployment. They had about a dozen kids, and they felt it would be too much for his wife while he was gone. She needed to be spayed, and she also had some malignant mammary masses. Just as we began thinking she d spend her last days here with one of us, we were contacted by a family that had decided that what they wanted to do is take an older, not-well, dog for whatever time was left. Initially hoping for the 11-year-old girl, Rosie, we asked if they would be interested in Shelby. Of course, they agreed. Shelby adores the man of the house, waiting for him to get out the shower, she gets along great with the two other much bigger dogs and still has kids to play with: Lilly who is 12, and Oliver, who is 7. Oliver has autism, and the first day, he stood at the top of the stairs, declined to meet her and went back to his room. Now they are best friends. They always have to be touching each other. This is why we do rescue. Shelby and her boy Oliver Hurley

31 Rescue Report Continued: Utah has a fundraiser dog wash set up for April 22nd, and another Facebook auction for the summer. Of course, we are rounding up our rescue dogs to come to the Rescue Parade held between the Bulldog Club of Utah Specialty and BCA Division 5 Specialty shows on May 2nd. The rescue numbers for BCARN, Bulldogs only, were turned in at the close of February: Utah took in 44, placed 41, one dog euthanized for aggression, 2 for end of life reasons. Bulldog Haven NorthWest took in 68, placed 67; 2 dogs euthanized. Southern Oregon Bulldog Rescue placed five dogs out of 11 taken in, with 2 in foster care and 4 in hospice care. They also had 3 holdover long-term care dogs from previous years. Pacific Northwest Bulldog Rescue took in 97, placed 93, and had 3 euthanasias, one for aggression. Alaska took in and placed 3 dogs.
