Maintenance have also been busy painting and moving residents, but hopefully that will slow down some. The new townhome is looking good. Drywall is going in and siding to come. 4 We love our Bus Trips Mead Family Honored with Century Farm Award The Mead family was recently recognized at the 2015 Iowa State Fair with the Century Farms award for having owned their farmland for 100 years. A Mead has actively farmed the ground for the entire 100 years. Pictured from left to right are John and Katie (Mead) Southard and their daughter Sadie Jane, Matt Mead and wife Sarah Wessel, Edward III and Veronica Mead, Janet Mead, wife of the late Edward Mead Jr., Dan and Deb Mead and their granddaughter Addison, Rick and Diane Mead and grandsons Nico and Camden Aldredge, Brad and Angie (Mead) Pline and their son Harrison, Jeff and Michaela (Mead) Aldredge, Rosanne Mead, and Tom and Suzanne (Carver) Mead and their son Cody. Not pictured are Kaley Mead, daughter of Tom and Suzanne and Ryan and Turner Mead, sons of Rick and Diane. John Ernest Vineyard Originally purchased by John Mead in 1915, the land was farmed by John ( ), his son Edward Mead, Sr.( ), his son Edward Mead, Jr. ( ), and his son Tom Mead (current). Tom and his wife Suzanne Carver Mead have actively farmed the ground for many years now. Tom and Suzanne s son Cody helps out a lot on the farm and is a junior at West Marshall. Daughter Kaley is a freshman at Iowa State University. Ed and his son Tom were past winners of the Masters Corn Growing Contest and Tom was a Marshall County Master Pork Producer and a State Master Pork Producer. As President of the Marshall County Pork Producers, Tom continued a tradition of promoting pork, along with other pork producers, grilling thousands of pork burger sandwiches at junior highs, high schools, and other city and county events. They volunteer at communities and schools, at the little league diamond, and at churches. You ll see Tom, Suzanne, Kaley, and Cody at the Pork Producers booth volunteering on the first Sunday of the World Famous Iowa State Fair helping grill tens of thousands of the popular Pork Chop on a Stick, as they have for many, many years. Being located so close to Marshalltown, many farm tours have been given over the years to help promote farm life and to educate people on animal agriculture and current modern farm practices. The Mead farms follow conservation plans by installing waterways and by planting trees and practicing no-till and reduced tillage farming. In the 1950s and early 1960s Ed Mead and his father Ed Mead, Sr. had a dairy operation whose milk was purchased by the local milk coop and of which some of it ended up in the milk, dairy, and ice cream at Mead s Dairy, owned by Ed Mead, Sr s brother John Mead. The original farm operation also had cattle and hogs, sheep, horses, chickens, and ducks. Crops raised included corn and soybeans, alfalfa and clover, oats. Meskwaki Trip In September we visited the JEV, pictures above, Erica from the winery did our very own wine tasting right on the bus. The residents enjoyed trying some different wines and learning about the winery. Thanks Erica. We also traveled to Green Castle to see the new bison calf and he made an appearance for us. On a rainy day, Dennis took the bus to Meskwaki Hotel to see the Historical Center, picture above. In October we are planning a trip to Amish Country, by Hazelton. Hopefully we will be able to watch them harvest, buy some yummy baked goods, see the beautiful country side, horses and of course those adorable children.

5 Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow When talking with Jan More she will tell you that her children are furry ones. Humphrey Bogard and Lauren Bacall AKA Bogie and Baby are her two cats who live in her apartment with her. I love to hear her stories about the antics they pull each day, just like children. Bogie and Baby are brother and sister. They are great company for Jan. Stop in and see Bogie s trick to Baby Community Comments ENDING ALZHEIMER S STARTS WITH YOU!! Glenwood Place is developing a team for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer s in Ames, IA on October 10, To join our team, simply stop by Glenwood Place or contact Pam or myself to sign up! It s that easy!! It s never too early to start raising funds or awareness of this great cause that will affect nearly 16 million Americans with the next two generations. Wow. To date, Glenwood Place has raised awareness and approximately $ in funds to donate, but let s raise the bar together with a goal of $4000! See you there!! Natalie Bogie CATS IN THE HOUSE Meet the Staff of Glenwood Place Frieda McInroy also has a furry friend, Suggi, is a Himalayan cat. He is 15 years old. Suggi is a lovable little guy. Frieda enjoys his company. Suggi Hi! My name is Maricela and I am glad to be part of the staff here at Glenwood Place. My husband and I have 3 children, a daughter who just turned 11, and two boys ages 9 and 5. We love to spend family time as much as we can. 6 RED HATTER S VISIT WOLFE RANCH THE COUNTRY STORE SPECIALS FOR OCTOBER: Paper towels 20 tickets On September 8th, Janet Mason, our Red Hat Mother Queen and 9 of her attendants including one Red Hat Gent traveled to Wolfe Ranch east of Marshalltown. There they met the Marshalltown Red Hat Mamas for a luncheon and program at the Ranch. Following a delicious lunch prepared by the Red Hats, Jennifer Danielson, Director of the Ranch told them about how the Wolfe Ranch operates. It is a non-profit organization that depends on donations and volunteer help, The Ranch is available for family gatherings, weekend retreats and other activities. They have Cowboy Church on some Saturday evenings and a Christmas program on December 6th. The horses are used for behavioral therapy, leadership therapy, assisted learning and other activities. Horses are a good teach therapy and people are better when they are around horses. Later in the afternoon, a game was played and everyone won prizes. Some of the Red Hatters went outside to see and pet the horses and pony. Bentley the pony, liked all of the attention. It was a fun filled day for all of us. RED HATTERS ENJOYING THE WOLFE RANCH Sm Kleenex 2 for 50 tickets COOK S CORNER Beautiful fall colors as leaves change, my grandson s football games, the world series and of course Halloween are a few reasons October is one of my favorite months. Wonderful warm smells coming from the kitchen include cinnamon, nutmeg, and the spicy smell of pumpkin. Pumpkin bread: 3 ½ cups flour 1 cup oil 2 tsp. soda 4 eggs 1 ½ tsp. salt 2/3 cup water 1 tsp. cinnamon 2 cups pumpkin 1 tsp. nutmeg 3 cups sugar 1 tsp. ginger Mix dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients and mix until smooth. Makes 3 loaves. Bake 350 for 1 hour. Look for this delicious bread soon from our kitchen. NURSE S NOTES Fall is upon us once again it s hard to believe the days will become shorter and the temps a little lower. Soon the leaves will begin to change. Change is something that is a constant in life. It s with a heavy heart that I make you aware of a change for my future. It has been a difficult decision but I ve decided to leave Glenwood Place. I truly have been honored to care for each and every one of you and get to know you and share the last year and a half with you. I ve enjoyed helping you and meeting your healthcare needs. My last day at Glenwood will be October 9 th. Again it has been an honor to be part of your lives and I thank you for making me feel welcome. Change the one constant in life. Take time to enjoy the last of the beautiful days before the seasons change to that cold white stuff that few are ready for. Taking a walk every day is something that benefits your heart and your joints movement helps to lower cholesterol and helps manage stiffness that comes from sitting too much. 7 God Bless you..jeanette
