4 4. Read the following passage carefully. (25 marks) One, Two, Three The shed was near the house. It was dark because it had only one small window covered with cobwebs. There were some tools in the shed. There was a spade, a rake and a pile of old sacks. There was something else as well, that not many people knew about. If you stood quite still in the shed, you cold hear the crackle of straw and perhaps a tiny cry. The crackle of straw and the tiny cry came from a box standing in a corner. In the box were a mother cat and her three newborn kittens. The cat s name was Minnie and her kittens were named One, Two and Three. When they were big enough and could drink milk from a saucer, they would go to homes of their own. Then someone would give them proper names, but for now everyone called them One, Two and Three. Sometimes a dog barked. What is that? asked One, his little legs shaking. It s only Prince, the dog, purred Minnie. He s taking care of us. He barks when he sees a stranger coming. Sometimes a door banged. What is that? mewed Two, shuddering like a jelly. It s only the wind blowing the door shut, purred Minnie. Now the wind won t get into our snug bed. Sometimes the woodcutter tipped the logs of wood out with a sound like thunder. What is that? cried Three, hiding her face in her mother s fur. It s only the woodcutter, purred Minnie. His logs of wood will make the kitchen fire burn brightly. I will take you into the kitchen for a treat, when you are bigger, if you are very good. A lady named Mrs Plum lived in the kitchen. She wore a white apron. Every day she brought Minnie s meals to her, in a blue dish. When Minnie had finished her food, the dish was as clean as if it had been washed.
