RESOURCES Teacher: Reading Text and Questions Each Pupil: Pen and Examination Paper INTRODUCTION: The teacher in charge distributes the examination papers to the pupils and asks them to write their name, surname, index number and class on the front cover. THE TEACHER TELLS THE PUPILS TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE EXAMINATION PAPER (PUPIL S COPY) AS S/HE READS. The teacher must read the following: 1. - I am going to read a story called The Boy who loved animals and you are to listen carefully. - Do not answer the questions or write anything while I am reading Open the examination paper and look at the questions. - I will read the questions to you once Close the exam paper and listen carefully. - I will read the story a second time. - Do not write anything while I am reading You have five minutes to answer questions 1 to In questions 1 to 15 put a tick in the correct box I will read the passage a third time. - You may complete any unanswered questions as I read You have now three minutes to check your answers, and complete any unanswered questions.
2 The Boy Who Loved Animals Edwin s father is an artist and his big brothers are going to be artists too. As he grows older, Edwin starts drawing too. And he draws animals for he loves animals and animals love him. He draws all sorts of animals, but especially dogs. The years go on and Edwin draws big and small dogs, sad and happy dogs and, by the time he is a grown up, everyone in London knows about the artist who draws dogs. One day Queen Victoria sends for him and asks him to draw pictures of all her pets. This makes Edwin very happy for there are all kinds of dogs in the palace. Sometimes the Queen comes to watch him at his work. How do you make your dogs look so real? she asks one day. Your Majesty, says Edwin, I peep into their hearts. Can you draw children too? asks the Queen. Yes, I can, replies Edwin. Then will you paint pictures of my children for me? So, when he finishes painting the palace dogs, Edwin Landseer paints pictures of the little princes and princesses, but he nearly always puts a dog in the pictures too. So he becomes famous and hundreds of people want to buy his pictures. (Adapted from Wide Range Readers Green Bk 3)
