3 Bernalillo County 4-H General Information 4-H is an informal, hands-on, practical educational program for youth. It is the Youth Development program of New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service. 4-H is where there is fun in learning and learning is fun! 4-H is for all youth, wherever they live in suburbs and cities, on farms and ranches. 4-H serves youth from all backgrounds and interests. It teaches both boys and girls through 4-H clubs, special interest groups, school enrichment groups, after school programs, and more! Youth, ages 5-19 can join. Older members may be involved in special leadership, global education, and recognition opportunities. 4-H is more than you ever imagined. From computers to citizenship, livestock to leadership, rabbits to rocketry kids have fun exploring more than 200 projects on nearly any subject. 4-H clubs in your area are offering youth something special. 4 General Small Animal Information Is my house/property zoned for poultry and rabbits? If so, what kind? HORSES, COWS, CHICKENS, & OTHER BARN-YARN ANIMALS Chickens, ducks, roosters, and similar poultry are allowed in most single family residential zones. There is no limit on the number of such animals. Kelsey Hayes Pie Sale 2008 Horses, cows, sheep and goats are allowed on lots of at least one half-acre in size, provided there is sufficient open space for each animal. Except in agricultural residential zones, use of the premises as a commercial farm enterprise is not allowed. Outside the city limits, within Bernalillo County, there appear to be no restrictions. Jacob Lowry-Goose-2008 Bottom line For Rabbits and Poultry Yes, you can have poultry and rabbits as far as the city, and county are concerned. However, if you have a neighborhood association, or covenants, we suggest you check to make sure you are not in violation of their regulations. The Webpage includes the previous information concerning whether your property is zoned for poultry and rabbits. 2

5 General Small Animal Information cont. When Do I Need To Have My Animals? What Is The Registration Process For County Fair. Rabbits and poultry need to have been purchased by May 1st of every year, to meet the requirements for the Bernalillo County 4-H Fair. With the exception of Market Rabbit and Market Poultry which has a ownership deadline of June 1st. Prior to May 1st, you should have signed up for the project, obtained suitable housing for the animal(s) you have chosen for your 4-H project, and purchased supplies and feed. Once you are set for the animals arrival, your are ready to purchase it. **Make sure you have a bill of sale that indicates the purchase date** All youth wanting to exhibit items in the County 4-H Fair need to complete the registration process which includes: Picking up an entry form from the Cooperative Extension Service which is available in June Completing the form and turning it back into the office with entry fees before the deadline in late July. If youth would like to have their animals considered for sale, they must indicate this on the entry form. What Do I Do With The Poultry Or Rabbits After County Fair? **Deadline dates and fees are posted in the fairbook which is available in April** Deadline dates are also posted in the 4-H Calendar If your animals do not make the Small Animal Sale and you wish to sale or donate them there are several options. You can put for sale signs on your rabbit or poultry cages and possibly sell them Saturday (the last day) of fair. Many members of the community are looking for animals after the completion of the fair. Consider posting an ad with us or at local feed stores. 6 Small Animal Sale Information What Is The Small Animal Sale? The Small Animal Sale at the Bernalillo County 4-H Fair includes only poultry and rabbits and is the only Sale of its kind in New Mexico. Included in the Small Animal Sale is the 1st place Sale Ring Pie exhibited in Youth Hall. The Sale serves several purposes including: SAS serves as a way for youth to understand the cost and care associated with managing livestock and how to handle the profits from their hard work SAS provides the opportunity for 4-H youth to continue their small animal projects and gives those who wish to belong to 4-H the opportunity to purchase quality stock. SAS is an opportunity for 4-H members who are in small animal projects to sell the animals they have raised to fund next years project. SAS is designated to help 4-H youth who live in the city and cannot have large livestock to start higher education funds. What Do I Need To Do To Be Eligible To Participate In The Small Animal Sale? To be eligible to participate in the Small Animal Sale youth must complete several steps. The 4-H member must indicate on the fair entry form his or her desire to be considered for the sale. Enter the sale ring class at the completion of judging of your species. Confirm participation with the SAS Committee President or Tamara Rowland 4-H Home Economist by 2:00 pm the Friday of Fair. Get a sponsor to donate one item to be given to the successful buyer of their animal. 7 Rabbit Information Where In Bernalillo County Can I Find Or Purchase Rabbits? The information concerning the purchase of rabbits in Bernalillo County is constantly changing. To find out the latest on where to buy rabbits and where to buy specific breeds of rabbits, please contact Christine Chavez- Bernalillo County Rabbit Superintendent at or chavez4you@yahoo.com Mrs. Chavez will be keeping up-to-date information and should be able to help you with your next rabbit purchase. What is the Approximate Cost of Raising Rabbits? The cost of raising rabbits varies depending on what you decide to do and how you decide to do it. Oh, and don t forget the cost of the rabbit, which can range from about $20 to $40, depending on the type of rabbit you want. The Cost of raising a rabbits includes: 1.Housing Wire hutches $40-$60 (less if you build it yourself) Wood hutches $100-$140 (less if you build it yourself) 2. Supplies Food Dishes 3. Food 4. Toys Water bottles $10-$20 per 50 lb bag of feed, depending on the kind/quality you decide on $5-$10 for Timothy Hay Free-$60 depending on what toys you want. How Should Rabbits Be Housed? ** Check your 4-H Rabbit Project Materials for additional information** There are different schools of thought concerning what makes a good rabbit hutch, but one prevailing thought is that minimizing the use of wood, and maximizing the use of wire is preferable. Wood, while it looks nice, tends to absorb urine and, as a result, smells over time, is difficult to clean, and is more likely to contribute to illness in your rabbit than compared to wire-mesh hutches. There are also cost differences, as well as differences in the difficulty of constructing a wooden versus mesh hutch. The wooden hutch will likely be more expensive, and more difficult to build, than the mesh hutch. The bottom line, though, is that this often comes to personal preference. Ask yourself these questions What do I want? What makes me happy? What will make my rabbit happy? Some people like the wooden hutches, some don t. Some like the mesh hutches, some don t. We ve provided several websites just to give you ideas. There is nothing special about these sites, other than an attempt to find basic rabbit hutch, or cage, designs that we thought might meet a typical 4-H member s needs. Search for hutch plans on your own, or read about what rabbits need and come up with your own design. None of this is set in concrete, but rather, is to start you thinking about what rabbit hutch might work for you. If you really don t want to build a hutch, you always have the option of buying one locally, or off the internet. But first Decide how much money you have to spend How much time you have to build your own Or shop for one ready to build or assemble, and then do it. It s as simple as that. Bottom line, though, is to have fun and enjoy getting ready to add your rabbit to your family

Oh, and don t forget the cost of the poultry, which can range from about $3 to $8, depending on the type of poultry.
