U.S. Targhee Sheep Association NATIONAL SHOW & SALE Miles City, Montana July 12-14, 2018

- The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association - Since 1951 The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association was founded September 27, 1951 in Dubois, Idaho at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station. The goal of these forward thinking pioneers was to develop profitable range raised sheep requiring minimal human intervention. They succeeded! Today s Targhee sheep are hardy enough to withstand the elements while still producing high quality lamb and wool for market. Find a comfortable spot and spend a little time to see what Targhee sheep can do for you For 67 years we ve focused on our bottom line and yours. - 2

Rams and ewes shall be owned by the breeder and the breeder s flock must be enrolled in the National Sheep Improvement Program. 2. All rams and ewes must be shorn after February 20th. 5. A minimum of trimming will be allowed to clean up the sheep as long as it does not misrepresent the sheep or affect the natural character of the wool (eg. carding). No shearing of belly wool will be allowed after the animal s shearing date. Rams and ewes can be disqualified if the trimming misrepresents the sheep or wool (eg. wool blindness or leveling of the topline). 6. In selecting the Outstanding NSIP ram and ewe, judging will be split 50/50 between the EPV records and the live show placing. Judging of the data will be done by the producers the morning of the show using the following point system. Every trait will be given equal rating and all animals ranked according to their EBV numbers with the "top" for each trait getting a 1 and the bottom getting the highest number. The individual rankings are tallied and the lowest overall score is given a 1, second a 2 and so on. If there is a tie, both animals will receive the lower number. 7. After the live placing is announced by the judge, the scores will be tallied and the resulting placings will then be announced. The top rams will then continue on to the championship round. If there is a tie, the sheep with the higher NSIP score will be used as the tie breaker. 8. Two rams will be allowed per breeder or flock enrolled in NSIP. 27 - The History of Targhee Sheep - The western range industry has long demanded a breed of sheep, thick in natural fleshing, producing high quality apparel type wool, and adapted to rugged conditions. Such a breed would contribute to breeding stability and simplify marketing problems with uniform body type and fleece grade. Many sheep breeders thought the ideal range breed would be ¾ fine wool and ¼ long wool breeding. This was commonly called a come back sheep. To fulfill this need the Targhee sheep was developed by the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station at Dubois, Idaho. In 1926 a group of 210 of the experiment station s cross-bred ewes, consisting of Rambouillet, Lincoln, and Corriedale blood, were bred to nine of the smoothest, thickest experiment station Rambouillet rams. After three years of the program, 201 first generation ewes were carefully selected and bred intensely. These ewes weighed 91 pounds as yearlings after shearing. A wide range of variations were produced in the second and third generations, but careful selection reduced the variations in future generations. The new breed of sheep was named Targhee after the Targhee National Forest where the sheep grazed during the summer. The first private individual to breed Targhees was Henry J. Yoppe of Eureka, Montana. He began breeding ¾ crosses in 1929, and in 1934 bought his first Targhee ram from Dubois. In 1942 Montana State University began a Targhee breeding program and over the next ten years a number of individuals began Targhee breeding programs. This was usually accomplished by sorting a band of Rambouillet, Columbia, or Rambouillet -Columbia ewes that met the selection criteria for Targhee Type as established by the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station. In large bands this usually resulted in 10% or fewer being kept. Sieben Live Stock Company of Helena, Montana, sorted 12,000 Rambouillet ewes to come up with 800 that met the criteria. These ewes were then crossed with Targhee rams from Dubois. When the Targhee Association was formed it was determined that five generations of top crossing were required to register the sheep. On September 27, 1951 a group of top sheepmen met with the staff of the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station at Dubois and formed the U.S. Targhee Sheep Association. The first officers were: President, G. Curtis Hughes - Stanford, Montana; Vice President, Henry S. Hibbard Helena, Montana; Directors, Henry J. Yoppe then of Livingston, Montana; and Leo Pfister Whitney, Nebraska. At a later meeting Steve Thompson Heppner, Oregon was elected a Director and Bill Boylan Bozeman, Montana was appointed Secretary/Treasurer. In 1966, the books of the association were closed and since that time registered Targhees must be from registered parents. The states with large numbers of Targhees are Montana, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, but there are members in a total of 20 states as well as Canada. Written by Jack McRae UNDERSTANDING EBV s You want higher numbers: number of lambs born indicates that female progeny should conceive a higher percentage of lambs. number of lambs weaned indicates females with stronger maternal traits which contribute to lamb survival, plus progeny with higher vitality and survivability. maternal weaning (milk) weight indicates that lambs will be heavier at weaning due to a contribution of maternal traits, including milk production and mothering ability. post weaning weight indicates that progeny that will be heavier at market/finished weight. yearling grease fleece weight indicates that progeny should produce heavier fleece weights. yearling staple length indicates progeny that should have longer stapled fleeces. eye muscle depth indicates that lambs should have larger loin eye muscles. Increasing ultrasoundmeasured loin-muscle area one square inch should increase gross carcass value by approximately $10. You want lower numbers: yearling fiber diameter indicates progeny that should have finer fleeces. yearling weight indicates progeny that have lower mature weights and therefore, less associated maintenance costs. fecal egg count indicates progeny that resist parasitic infection, thereby reducing the need for deworming. Fat depth indicates progeny that will be leaner at market weight, but replacements ewes might also have lower reproductive capabilities NSIP Ewes and Rams offer the buyer EBV s and what are those? Estimated Breeding Values or EBVs are science-based, industry-tested measurements of heritable traits that can be tracked and measured. EBVs are proven to improve on-farm productivity and enhance breeding decisions. NSIP Targhee breeders have increased the number of lambs born by 7% by using EBV s 27

2018 USTSA Starter Flock Winners are.. Corinne Canen Glendive, Montana Daughter of Tana & Ross Canen Shepherding lives in some individuals genes!! So is the case for one of the 2018 USTSA Starter Flock Program award winners. Corrine Canen, of Glendive, Montana, will become a 5th generation shepherdess when she receives her award animals in July at the 2018 USTSA National Show and Sale. Her great-great-grandfather emigrated from Norway in the late 1800 s, settling in eastern Montana, and taking employment as a shepherd. Corinne s parents, Tana & Ross, raise cattle, registered Quarter Horses, sheep and feed grains on their Glendive-area ranch. They currently own just over 50 head of Suffolk ewes, selling lambs for meat and to other 4-H members for market lambs. Corinne has been actively involved in her local 4-H chapter for the past 7 years, three of which have been in their sheep project. At her 2016 county fair, she raised and exhibited the Grand Champion market lamb, and in 2017, she received the Butcher s Choice Award. She also was a showmanship champion at a jackpot show in Marnie Rau, Corinne s 4-H Leader, commented that she will be someone other youth will look to and see what the program truly represents. Besides her sheep project, Corinne also exhibits dairy goats and rabbits, takes part in the horsemanship and colt-tomaturity competitions, and will be showing her first market hog this year. There s always been something so irresistible about wool breed lambs, states Corinne. They re very cute and I like the fact that they are smaller then the meat breeds I m used to working with. She is highly involved with the current family flock, helping with tagging, sorting, vaccinating, and being a good go-fer. They use goats to nurse their bum lambs, which mainly belong to Corinne, and for which she is responsible, including the bum lambs. Corrine envisions herself showing, raising and expanding a healthy flock of Targhees, selling the offspring and the wool. She plans on exhibiting her animals as purebred 4-H projects, and sharing the benefits of the breed with her other club members. Her grandmother also would like to use their wool in pillows! It appears that the future is pretty bright for this award winner and her new flock! Corinne will be receiving a ewe lamb donated by Alicia Holtz, Little Falls, Minnesota (2017 USTSA Starter Flock Winner), a yearling ewe donated by McRae Brother Targhees/Jack & Kathy McRae, Jordan, Montana, and a yearling ewe donated by Dallas Sheep Outfit/Chuck & Cindy Dallas, Wilsall, Montana. She will also be receiving a yearling ram donated by Hunt Family Ranch/Michael & Rox Hunt, Carthage, South Dakota. 28

2018 USTSA Starter Flock Winners are... Matilda Weeding Circle, Montana Daughter of Kyle & Shannell Weeding The whole family is looking forward to raising sheep again! That feeling was very prominent when Matilda Weeding, of Circle, Montana was informed that she was one of the 2018 USTSA Starter Flock Award recipients. Shepherding skipped a generation, but she is excited about raising her own flock of white-faced, wool breed sheep. And at nine years of age, she is going to have a good amount of time to grow her flock! Matilda s grandparents used to raise Suffolks and commercial whiteface sheep, but now they focus their efforts on cattle, mainly due to past predation problems in the area. While helping with chores on their farm, her grandparents have told her stories about when her mother was young and how much fun they had with the sheep. As her mother, Shannell, stated, she has wanted to get some ever since. Her family has recently purchased some new property, which will be an ideal location to work with and raise her animals. Not only does she help work her grandparents cattle, she also helps with her grandmothers quail and rabbits. Being a member of her local 4-H chapter will allow Matilda to show her animals at the local county fair, where very few members raise and exhibit breeding sheep, and even fewer who are raising white wool breeds. I would like a nice flock of sheep to raise, like ten to fifteen sheep, explains Matilda. She also desires to teach her younger sister how to take care of a flock of sheep, gaining some practical day-to-day sheep management experience while helping a few local sheep producers with various jobs and activities. Matilda is the proud owner of a Corgi, named Bandi, who she spends a great amount of time with, setting up obstacle courses, taking for long walks, and providing basic daily care. She also loves sports, participating in basketball, football and soccer, with her favorite being soccer! Matilda is an energetic, motivated young lady, who, according to a close family friend, is a very friendly, helpful girl that would be a great representative for the US Targhee Sheep Association in our community. Matilda will be receiving a ewe lamb donated by Skull Creek Targhees/Kristin & Cord Bieber, Brockway, Montana, a yearling ewe donated by Tunby Ranch Targhess/Randy & Amanda Tunby, Baker, Montana, and a yearling ewe donated by Dallas Sheep Outfit/ Chuck & Cindy Dallas, Wilsall, Montana. She will also be receiving a breeding ram donated by McRae Brother Targhee/Jack & Kathy McRae, Jordan, Montana. 29

2018 USTSA Starter Flock Winners are... Hannah Wetzstein Buhl, Idaho Daughter of Troy Wetzstein When your grandparents tell you go for it, that s a good sign that your family is behind your endeavors! This is exactly what happened to Hannah Wetzstein, of Buhl, Idaho, one of the 2018 USTSA Starter Flock Award recipients. Hannah s first show-ring experience with sheep happened when she was 4 years old, helping her grandparents good friends. Or as Hannah puts it, That s when I fell in love! She was given a bum Dorset ewe lamb to raise, show, and sell the next year, and that was the start of her sheep project. Sheep are not the main species raised on Hannah s ranch. That would be cattle, which her father and grandfather prefer. But Hannah s 4 -H leader encouraged her to show sheep and start livestock judging. After her 4-H leader retired, Hannah switched to showing only cattle at the 4 -H level, but she has continued to show sheep in open and junior classes at their two State Fairs and their county fair. Hannah also participates in Lead Line competitions, winning twice already, and last year won the Top Hand Award, voted on by various leaders and given to the 4-H/FFA member that excels in their project and demonstrates true 4-H/FFA values. Hannah s grandmother also has been a great influence for her and her sheep, getting Hannah into spinning the fiber they harvest. The local spinners club is also looking for quality white wool for dying. As Hanna explains, Our girls have nice wool, but we d like to make it softer to sell to them and still have good lambs to sell. Her grandmother took a wool grading class, and after determining the diameter on some Targhee wool, they knew they wanted to start raising Targhees! When Hanna started looking for local breeders, she found the starter flock award application, and now the rest is history! Last lambing season, Hannah maxed out the room in their lambing barn. When her grandfather observed the situation, he decided that Hannah and her grandmother needed a bigger barn. So her father, Troy, will be busy getting the new barn built for her new animals, and Hannah will be busy this summer building divider fences in their pastures so she can rotationally graze her ever growing flock of sheep. As her current 4- H leader, Karin Hurley, explains, Hannah always maintains a high standard in caring for her animals and sets high expectations for herself as well. Hannah will be receiving a ewe lamb donated by Clover Meadow Targhees/Cal & Julie Ward, Sheridan, Montana, a yearling or aged ewe donated by Montana Sheep Company/Brent & Tracie Roeder, Ft. Shaw, Montana, and a yearling ewe donated by Green Ranch/Carolyn Green, Melville, Montana. She will also be receiving a yearling ram donated by Hunt Family Ranch/Michael & Rox Hunt, Carthage, South Dakota. 30
