2016 Annual Report Saving lives. Building a more humane community. Together.

2016 Our Best Year Ever Thanks to You! 2016 was a remarkable year for Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. In the following pages, you will see how 45,324 cats and dogs were helped because friends like you cared. You helped to start new programs like the Kitten Nursery, to expand established programs like Countdown 2 Zero, and to strengthen exciting partnerships like the Rescue Network. You will see through the numbers, the stats, and the financial reports how, together, we accomplished so much this year. Also, in the following pages, please feel the love of everyone who cares for the animals as much as you do. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League keeps growing because of you thank you for your continued support! Because of compassionate people like you, 2016 saw more animals served than ever in our 91 year history. Adoptions Animals seem to know when they are being adopted dogs eyes light up and their tails wag Pawlomino Adopted: 2/6/16 happily. Cats get excited too, but they are just much cooler about it until they can t be coy any longer, and snuggle up to your shoulder or wrap around your leg with a purr! Placing animals in loving homes is the essence of what we do. It s what we all want for every pet that comes through our doors to be well cared for by someone who loves them. 5,781 pets were placed in new homes in 2016 a record-breaking year. Darwin Adopted: 4/5/16 Our beautiful cover cat was one of 334 animals adopted at the 2016 Countdown 2 Zero event in September. See page 6 for full story. 1 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League PeggyAdams.org

Medical Top Stories of 2016 Miracles happen at Peggy Adams our medical team is saving lives and restoring health and mobility every day. The League has 5 full-time veterinarians: three surgeons and two shelter medicine specialists. Kitten Nursery July 8, 2016 marked a milestone for Peggy Adams with the opening of our Kitten Nursery. We are now able to offer neonatal support to the most at-risk animals we see newborn kittens. Thanks to phenomenal volunteers and staff, these kittens receive 24/7 care where they to learn to eat, clean themselves and how to bond. Kitten Nursery graduates move into our Foster Care program until they are ready for spay/neuter surgery and then into the Adoption program where they will find a loving home. Thanks to you for making the nursery a reality. Tita, a 6-year old Dachshund, was left in a crate, abandoned at our door. She had no use of her back legs. Our veterinarians discovered that a massive herniated disc was squeezing her spinal cord. Thanks to Olivia s Fund dedicated to saving the lives of animals through special surgical and medical treatments Tita is no longer paralyzed. She is a great little girl with her tail always wagging. OJ, a beautiful 9 month old kitten, came to us with a severely mangled right front leg. We couldn t save his leg, but fortunately we did save his life. OJ now has a wonderful life with his new family. They report that even with only three legs, he is unstoppable! Annual Report

Top Stories of 2016 Rescue Peggy Adams is an Emergency Placement Partner with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) a national network of agencies working to rescue animals from abuse, neglect and natural disasters. This network has saved dogs and cats from floods, fires and other natural disasters, and has sheltered victims of abuse from puppy mills and animal hoarders. Happy was rescued from a dreadful hoarding situation. She was heartworm positive, had severe abrasions and skin infections. Now Happy enjoys green grass and fresh air with her caring family after far too long in captivity and neglect. Peggy s Pantry Peggy s Pantry touches lives in a special way it helps people keep their beloved pets during difficult times and prevents animals, with families who love them, from being surrendered to a shelter. It s heartbreaking when someone thinks they have to give up their best friend because they can t afford a few cans of dog food. Peggy s Pantry can help keep them together. The support of the community ensures the success of one of our key programs. Ashley, a young philanthropist, held a pet food and supply drive for her 12 th birthday. Look at all the food, litter and other supplies she donated to benefit the furry members of our community! 3 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League PeggyAdams.org

Sindy Conover 2016 Volunteer of the Year Volunteers The people who volunteer at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League bring tremendous love and care to the service they perform. In January, the League honored 274 volunteers who had given 50 hours or more in 2016 the largest number ever to do so. Thank you for your service. From the Kitten Nursery to fostering, from dog walking to dog playgroups, from socializing cats to helping in our Shaggy Shoppe boutique, from helping with adoptions to working special events our more than 500 volunteers are a vital part of our team. Thank you! Project CatSnip Project CatSnip was developed to humanely and effectively address the management of Palm Beach County s large population of free-roaming, community cats through Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate- Return (TNVR). Thanks to the support of caring individuals, corporate sponsors, and foundations, we ve been able to expand our TNVR program and make great progress toward reaching our goal of making Palm Beach County a no-kill community by You can see the results in the data nearly 8,000 fewer cats entering the County shelter in 2016 than ten years ago. Even more impactful, 10,000 fewer cats were euthanized by the County in 2016 than in Together, we are saving lives. Volunteer Louis Molina on the job Annual Report

Top Stories of 2016 This is Dolly Dolly s Dream is a project to encourage the adoption of Square Head dogs (usually mislabeled as Pit Bulls) and to counter unfortunate myths and stereotypes. Dolly is a Square Head who opened the heart of the man who adopted her and taught him how loving, sweet, and gentle these dogs can be. In her honor, Dolly s Dream gives dogs like her a second chance at life and the type of home every dog deserves. Behavior Jumping on people, eating the furniture, not using a litter box, even being too shy these and many other behaviors number among reasons families will surrender a pet to a shelter. Often, these behaviors are not permanent an animal (and its humans) can be coached, and that s what the League s 7-person Behavior Team aims to do. Group classes addressing common obedience issues are offered once a week at Peggy Adams to the public free of charge. Affordable specialized group classes also are available. Additionally, every pet that arrives at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is evaluated by our team. Whenever possible, if a shelter pet requires a coaching plan, one is put into place so that families adopting that cat or dog can count on an animal suited to their lifestyle. Cats and dogs receive special socialization interventions from staff and volunteers if needed. Dogs not only have individualized plans, but they also enjoy daily playgroups designed not only for good fun and exercise, but also teaching them how to interact with other dogs, making them even more adoptable. Lastly, our Behavior Team fosters special enrichment exercises and toys for the animals in shelter, lessening boredom and increasing their adaptability. Cagney is a Dolly s Dream success! Thanks to foundation funding for Dolly s Dream dogs, their adoption fees are waived and the new family receives ID tags, collar, harness, leash, training crate, dog bed, training treat bag, food and water bowl, and seven months of free pet insurance. 5 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League PeggyAdams.org

Launched in 2014, Countdown 2 Zero is a publicprivate partnership between Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. As part of our Countdown 2 Zero efforts, the League regularly transfers animals from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control into our care. Often, these are animals with medical problems that require the kind of care the country-run shelter can t afford to provide. Dogs like Chewie with a profound case of demodectic mange, Sammy who was hit by a car, Hannah who had a bladder stone the size of a bar of soap, and Henry who nearly starved to death were saved through the cooperative efforts of the Countdown 2 Zero member agencies. Our Critical Areas of Focus: High Volume, Affordable Spay/Neuter Proactive Lost & Found TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) Medical & Behavior Programs Proactive & Efficient Adoptions Rescue Networks Foster Care Keeping Pets & People Together Volunteers Community Outreach & Involvement Advocacy Hannah Sammy Thanks to the 2016 Countdown 2 Zero adoption event, 334 animals have new, loving homes. More than 30 Palm Beach County animal rescue organizations and shelters participated and share this common goal of saving the lives of every adoptable animal in our community. It s exactly what Countdown 2 Zero is all about adopting from a local shelter when looking for a new pet. Chewie Henry In the three years since Countdown 2 Zero was launched, the euthanasia rate for adoptable pets in Palm Beach County has dropped 61%! Annual Report

Special Events Off The Leash Walk for the Animals Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League s 15 th Annual Barry Crown Walk for the Animals took place on Saturday March 12, 2016, at Downtown at The Gardens. Hundreds of participants, along with their adorable pets, gathered on this beautiful South Florida day to raise awareness and over $104,000 for the League s life-saving mission. On March 20 th, over 150 supporters enjoyed this casual, end-of-season dinner dance at Club Colette in Palm Beach. The sold-out event raised nearly $250,000 topping each of the three proceeding years. Our guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, and dancing while meeting some of our wonderful dogs and cats. It was a great evening where everyone just unleashed a bit. Sasha, a Fospice pet, was the featured dog at 2016 s Off The Leash event. 7 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League PeggyAdams.org

45 th Annual Christmas Ball Festive Christmas trees, holiday lights and glittering decorations filled the Sailfish Club on the night of December 8 th for our Annual Christmas Ball. Pauline Pitt, a devoted League supporter and board member, served as Chairwoman again this year for our largest fundraising event. As always, the animals were center stage, greeting the guests on the red carpet and later parading through the party. Some even found forever homes that very special night. More than $600,000 was raised that night to help the animals. Peggy Adams Board Chairman Lesly Smith with Philip Tilearcio Blessing of the Animals More than 130 people and their pets gathered at Peggy Adams on October 22, 2016 on the grounds adjacent to the Berman Memorial Gardens for our annual ceremony of the Blessing of the Animals. Rabbi Frank and Father Bernie blessed each pet and their family individually following the ceremonies honoring all the pets. Annual Report

Who We Are One Final Happy Tale Chewbacca, a sweet 4 month-old puppy, was transferred to Peggy Adams from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Suffering from a profound case of mange, we gave him the medications, dietary supplements and foster care he badly needed. It was amazing to witness his recovery, from a hairless little guy in great discomfort to a cute, short-haired pup and, finally, to a dog with one glorious coat! Chewie turned out not only to be gorgeous, but also very smart. He has received the AKC Star Puppy Award, as well as the AKC Canine Partners certificate and AKC Good Citizenship Award.
