From the Executive Director... Dear Friends, 2015 was rewarding and energizing for our organization and I am pleased to share with you some highlights from the year. In 2015, we saw a 33% decrease in the average length of stay for an animal at Homeward Bound. We re proud of this but we know we couldn t have done it without the support of passionate donors and volunteers, our local media, and a caring community. We also had a lot of fun with adoption promotions in 2015, such as our spoof on Black Friday, Black Cat Appreciation Days, that sent home 12 of our coal-colored felines in just a week! We marked our 40 th anniversary in 2015 and celebrated at the 4 th of July parade in Bristol and enjoyed a community-wide birthday party at our annual fundraising walk for the animals, Woofstock. A very special part of our birthday celebration was a Founders Lunch wherein the early board members and staff came together to reminisce and then tour our current state-of-the-art facility. In 2015, we expanded our volunteer program to include more youth volunteers and saw great growth, with many families now able to enjoy the experience together. We teamed up with Middlebury College to arrange campus visitations with shelter dogs for socialization and stressrelief: a win-win. Our plans for 2016 include capitalizing on the operational efficiencies that enabled us to reduce our length of stay and expanding our reach to help animals from high-volume shelters in other parts of the country. We are also putting a spotlight on humane education in 2016 with our first ever summer camp for kids, Camp Whiskers & Wags. We look forward to 2016 and invite you to get involved with Homeward Bound and make great things happen for animals! Warmly, Jessica Danyow P.S. Save the Date! Woofstock 2016 will be on September 17 th at the Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury! 3

Giving Programs The Legacy Society The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy. - Kalu are gone, Making a planned gift to Homeward Bound is a meaningful way to carry forward your compassion and concern for animals, and a wonderful way to say thank you to every animal that has touched your life. Further, it is one of the most effective ways to ensure that Homeward Bound can continue to save lives and provide other vital services that make Addison County a more humane community for animals, while also receiving tax benefits. Those who include Homeward Bound in their long-term charitable planning are recognized as members of the Homeward Bound Legacy Society. These thoughtful supporters have decided to establish a legacy of support that will help animals for years to come. If you have, or would like to include Homeward Bound in your estate plans, please contact us with information about your planned gift so that we can recognize your generosity and talk with you about how you would like us to carry out your legacy. You may remain anonymous if you wish. Homeward Bound Friends of the Animals Our Friends of the Animals have a tremendous impact on the welfare of animals in Addison County. They are a core group of supporters that contribute monthly, quarterly, or biannually to sustain the work of the shelter. Their gifts are put to immediate use each month to feed, vaccinate, microchip, spay/neuter, address the medical needs of the animals in our care, and keep the doors of our state-of-the-art facility open to all who need us! Our Friends program grew from 18 members in 2014 to 31 in (Anonymous Friends are not included below). Lisa Boyle Joni Burkett Amy Carter Sarah & Susan Carter Hal & Linda Cohen Maureen Conrad Jessica Danyow Pat Davies Martha Dier Katherine Dodds Our Friends of the Animals include: Todd & Luana Findley Judi Fisher Karen & Jim Gallott Debbie & Tim Holmes Gayle & Jay Malinowski Jeanne Posner Diane & Kevin Quiet Michelle Shubert Allen Stillman Sydney & Heidi Stokes Jim Stuart Charlotte Tate & Chris Zeoli Barbara Tennien Ginny Vautier Nancy Ward Michael Warner & Joseph Watson Nancy & James West 7
Programs and Services For the past 40 years we have provided temporary shelter for thousands of lost, abandoned, neglected or surrendered animals. As the county s only animal shelter, we work hard to meet the needs of a growing and changing population. We understand that the welfare of animals is always linked to the welfare of people and we have developed and continue to focus on programs that provide support to struggling pet owners. All of our programs and services are provided without any county, state or federal funding or funding from any national humane organizations. In 2015, we welcomed more than 2,700 visitors to the shelter! Trap-Neuter-Release: Homeward Bound operates a seasonal Trap-Neuter- Release (TNR) program to help address the overpopulation of stray, feral, and loosely owned cats in Addison County. Last year, 102 cats were sterilized and vaccinated at no cost to farmers and other caretakers. Humane Education: We host tours and pay visits to area school children, summer campers, library groups and more providing education on proper pet care, dog bite safety, the importance of spaying and neutering, and encouraging kindness and responsibility. Last year we provided over 140 Addison County students with a presentation about the humane society and what it takes to be a responsible pet owner. Pets in Crisis: We work with local human service providers to address the animalrelated needs of victims of domestic violence, housing crises, and natural disasters. We can offer short-term housing for animals so that their humans can focus on recovery without anxiety about their beloved pets. We came to the aid of 13 pets in crisis last year. Lost & Found Referral: We facilitate the reunion of pets and their people through our low-cost micro-chipping service and our lost and found-referral service. In 2015, we were able to re-unite 79 lost pets with their families. Third-Party Adoptions: We act as an adoption clearinghouse for people who need to re-home their pets but do not want to surrender them to the shelter. Third-party adoptions are posted on our website and promoted in the shelter. Cremation services: We provide on-site pet cremation service for individuals and organizations throughout Vermont. 8
Pets Eat Too!: We partner with the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging to provide pet food to homebound seniors who receive Meals on Wheels. In 2015, we delivered more than 2,585 pounds of food. Spay the Mom: This is a partnership with area veterinarians aimed at helping prevent unwanted kittens from being born and to find loving responsible homes for unintentional litters. The kittens are surrendered to the shelter; the Mom is spayed and returned to her owner. The program is free for participants. Microchipping Clinics: We hosted a series of open door clinics throughout the year in order to provide pet owners with a low cost way to safeguard their pets should they ever become lost. Last year we microchipped 36 animals. Humane Investigations: We facilitate humane investigations throughout Addison County and work to support law enforcement in cases of animal neglect or cruelty that violates Vermont's animal welfare laws. In 2015, Homeward Bound investigated 48 complaints of neglect and worked to educate and provide resources to resolve concerns Cases by Type of Animal 2015 Cases by Nature of Complaint 9
Volunteer Program Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless. ~Sherry Anderson General Volunteering Homeward Bound encourages the involvement of volunteers who support our mission; to educate the community and improve the lives of animals, alleviate their suffering, and elevate their status in society. Volunteers play a vital role within our organization! Without their support, we would not be able to assist nearly the number of animals who need help in our community. In 2015 we had a total of 150 active volunteers serving a total of 3,357 hours! 286 hours of administrative support ~ 1415 hours of cat socializing ~ 1437 hours of dog walking and training ~ 59 hours of property maintenance ~ 77 hours of photographing animals for adoption publicity ~ 83 hours of program support. Foster Care Homeward Bound occasionally receives animals that are pregnant, have offspring, are sick or injured, or who are too young to be placed immediately for adoption. These animals are temporarily placed in private foster homes where they receive care, nurturing, and socialization until they are able to return to the shelter. In 2015 we had 18 active foster families caring for 118 animals, totaling over 2,600 hours of care! Animal Transport Homeward Bound has a core group of volunteers who drive shelter animals to and from their spay/neuter appointments, sometimes as far away as Burlington and Rutland! In volunteers transported 334 animals to appointments, totaling over 100 trips and more than 150 hours on the road! 10
