In a matter of just eight hours, 313 animals were adopted into new, loving homes at the inaugural Countdown 2 Zero adoption event. And friends like you made it all possible thanks to your caring and generous support of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. With more than 600 animals and 26 local rescue groups on hand, the event was so big that we needed to hold it at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. In fact, this was the biggest one-day animal adoption event in the history of our community. And we re already planning for next year! You see, this giant adoption event is and will continue to be the signature public event in support of Countdown 2 Zero the exciting collaboration between Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Officially adopted by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners on February 4, 2014, Countdown 2 Zero will build a coalition of local animal welfare organizations, individual animal advocates (like you), community groups, the media and local businesses so that together as a community we will work towards one goal: to save the lives of all adoptable pets in Palm Beach County. 3 A New Leash on Life... On April 2, 2014, fifty-six dogs, three cats, two hedgehogs, a parrot, a pig and a goat were rescued from deplorable conditions in an Acreage home. Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control officials were tipped off by an anonymous caller whose hoarder or puppy mill suspicions were generated from the immense stench of urine coming from the house. Once the officials arrived at the scene, they found high levels of ammonia, dogs kept in wire cages that had sores on their feet, and many animals with dental problems, open wounds, eye problems, worms and skin conditions. The next day, over 20 volunteers arrived at Animal Care and Control to help bathe the animals. After the county pursued and won custody of all the animals and charges were brought against the home owner, they reached out to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League for help. The League and our staff were excited for the opportunity to help our local Animal Care and Control and eager to meet and make a difference in our new arrivals lives. Over a period of ten days, we transferred a total of twenty-one dogs to the League. There were French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, a beautiful American Bulldog mix named Annie, several other small breed dogs, and one cat. The staff was thrilled to have the big group of snorting, wiggling little bodies that began to settle in. The dogs were a huge hit once they arrived and had a steady stream of visitors, as our staff made it a point to visit and help socialize the dogs. We were also asked to help with nine Cane Corsos that had also come into the county s possession as part of the same hoarding case. Cane Coros are wonderful, large mastiff type dogs who unfortunately are harder to place in the right home. Sgt. Batchelor from Animal Care and Control had already made contact with Liz Sawyers from Cane Coros International, a non-profit rescue group based out of Austin, Texas. With the help of the League s animal behaviorist, Huck Nawaz, we were able to assess these gentle giants and to help coordinate their placement. While Huck behaviorally assessed the dogs and took video of the them, Liz coordinated with her large network of Cane Corso lovers and fellow rescues. We gathered information on the dogs behavior and temperament in Palm Beach County while Liz, a thousand miles away in Texas, went to work in search of suitable foster homes. Many s and countless phone calls later, our collective plan for the Cane Corsos was in place. Less than a month after receiving the initial call for assistance, all nine of the Cane Corsos were adjusting nicely with their foster families. As for the French Bulldogs, the other small breed dogs and cat, all have been adopted into loving homes. There is one sweetie named Annie who is still waiting for her forever home. She s a beautiful dog who s best suited for a home with patient guardians who will continue to socialize her and be able to help her realize that the world is not such a scary place. 4 Make A Difference! Introducing the League s New FOSPICE PROGRAM At any given time, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League can have between animals in its care. Some of the animals surrendered to us are underage, pregnant or nursing, sick, injured, and/or under socialized. Others might have medical or behavioral issues. Once the animals are vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchipped, they will be placed in our adoption program. If they are in our care for a long period of time or they just aren t comfortable with the shelter environment, they might need a better option. That's when our volunteer Fospice Program plays a key role in helping the League care for these animals. Why are Fospice volunteers so important? Fospice volunteers provide permanent foster homes for older animals, long-term animals, and animals with medical or behavioral conditions which might preclude them from being placed in a loving home through the normal adoption program. All Fospice animals receive food, medical care, supplies, and palliative care for geriatric pets, as needed. Peggy Adams also provides routine follow-up care for all diagnosed medical conditions. Contact Niki at or us at foster@peggyadams.org Cindy was found running along the streets of Lake Worth when she was brought to the League in June Eight-year-old Cindy needed to be treated for demodectic mange and ear infections. While in our care, our volunteer Pat Russo offered to foster Cindy during her treatments so that she would recover faster being in a loving, home atmosphere. After almost a year of fostering and realizing her skin and ear infections would be an ongoing situation, Pat agreed to be her permanent foster mom and became Cindy s Fospice mom. Pat, thank you for your 3.5 years of volunteer service and for opening your heart and your home to become a Fospice parent! Jaeger (15 years old ) and Eadie (14 years old) are two older souls who, at the peak of kitten season, found themselves surrounded by high energy, rowdy and rambunctious younger cats. We didn t feel it was fair to them so we asked our Foster Volunteer, Maria, if she would provide these two cats with a more relaxed and calmer environment. Maria very generously opened her home to Jaeger and Eadie who have become quite the little buddies in their new forever home. 4 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League As you can see, Calvin and Noah are enjoying the beautiful Florida sunshine with their Fospice mom Patricia. 5 Tips from our Trainer Teaching Recall...Come Command by Huck Nawaz, Behavior Manager Years ago, I was visiting a friend s house as their neighbor s very large Lab mix came bolting out the front door. He slowed down to give me a quick sniff as he ran across the yard. The neighbor soon stepped outside yelling for the dog to come back. My friend s dad, upon hearing the commotion, came out and yelled car ride!! The dog turned on a dime and went running past us to go sit by the back door of their car. Huh! Car ride? What a strange name for a dog I thought! The key to teaching recall is convincing your dog that it is more rewarding to come to you then it is to practice whatever he d rather be doing. Each dog s motivation varies so you ll first have to find out what your dog enjoys the most. Whether it be a car ride; his favorite toy or a few of his favorite treats. Use the buddy recall to teach your dog the basic recall. Have a friend hold your dog by the collar (if your dog is comfortable with this) as you walk up to him and show him his favorite toy. You may also use food for this, as well. Walk backwards, away from your dog to hold his attention as the restrained dog watches you. When you re about twenty feet from the dog, come to a stop. Become really animated to make sure you have your dog s attention. You may wish to use a squeaky toy; squat down on the floor, etc. Say his name followed by the word come. Your friend then releases your dog so he may come over to you. Reward them when they come to you. Now, you hold your dog while your friend follows the same steps above. Once your dog starts to associate the word come with coming over to you, start practicing in different situations. Hide in different places around the house so your dog has to come look for you. Dogs LOVE a good game of hide and seek. It ll give you a chance to practice the come command by calling him to your hiding spot. Always practice recall in a safe, fenced-in area. Be sure to reward your dog for coming over to you. After all, he chose to come over to you. Get in the habit of asking your dog for a sit (before rewarding) after he comes over to you. And as you can see, she is adored by her siblings. ~ The Wolf Family Blaze has been the perfect addition to our family! The kids immediately fell in love with him! Every night at bed time, he runs in and curls up under the blankets in their room! ~ Kristin, Kadin, Kelsey BEAR Thank you... as I told Huck when I spoke to him, Bear adjusted just fine within the first day! Absolutely no behavioral issues! No food guarding, no jumping, no garbage, no counters, no eating belongings, etc! Really have zero complaints or issues. He's actually a giant baby! He's also a great roller-blading and running partner! Madison wants to bring him to a Saturday morning class. Thank you again for our new family member! ~ Foster Family Rainbow has settled in beautifully and has become part of the family. She and Mitzi are very comfortable together and even go nose to nose to say "Hi" to each other. She is a hoot and so entertaining. She jumps on my chest in the morning and cuddles at sunrise telling me it is time to start the day. I am spoiling her already and she has an account at Petco for her Toy Gallery and I just ordered a Tower for her to play on from Amazon. I never know where to find her as you can see from the photo. This was a fabulous decision to provide a companion for Mitzi. We are bonding beautifully and it has only been two weeks. Thanks for this heart-warming gift. We love her already. ~ Marylyn OAT (formerly KING) So far everything has been WONDERFUL! For some reason, King never responded to his name and we started to call him Oat. Within a day he started coming when called so we have stuck with that being his name. Rocky and him are getting along perfectly and there has been no bad interactions, they walk together on their leashes and love long walks. Oat loves to cuddle and lay on us or as close as possible. I really feel he was meant for my family and can't believe it has not even been a week yet! Here are a few pictures I've taken of the boys. After months of planning, the doors of the Palm Beach County Convention Center were opened at 10am on Saturday, September 6th, for the inaugural Countdown 2 Zero Adoption Event -- the largest one day adoption event ever to be held in our community. Over the next eight hours, more than 4,000 people entered the 50,000 square feet of convention space to find more than 600 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies (as well as rabbits and guinea pigs) who were looking for their new, forever homes. Thanks to a generous $20,200 grant from the Florida Animal Friend s License Plate, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League spayed and neutered 593 cats in zip code 33461, exceeding our goal by 21 cats. This area was selected for this grant based on the high instance of cats and kittens entering local shelters. Of the 593 cats spayed and neutered, 390 were community cats brought in for Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) and 203 were domestic cats. Purchase your plate and help fund programs like ours! Had these 300 cats not been spayed, they could have produced as many as 36,000 kittens. 14 SPECIAL THANKS TO... The campers from the City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation department scheduled a project group in July. They arrived bright and early for their tour and then took on several projects across our campus. They scanned documents, they created adoption folders and boxes and scrubbed, scrubbed, scrubbed. Projects groups play an important role at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Natalie helps field some of the 4,000 calls we receive each month ranging from Where do I go to volunteer? and Do you offer affordable vaccinations? to Help - there s a raccoon in my garage! Natalie is one of the League s biggest advocates. She adopted her dog from here, she helps recruit friends and neighbors and is a frequent donor. ProjectCatSn p We are excited to announce that Project CatSnip has been selected by the 2015 Class of Leadership Palm Beach County as one of their Civic Engagement Projects. The purpose of Project CatSnip will be to educate the public about the community cat over population issue and to offer solutions that are both humane and environmentally conscious. We are looking forward to meeting the team of business leaders who will develop this project as a partner with the League. Here s how we kept our promise to the animals from January 1, August 31, ,866 Dogs, cats, puppies and kittens received services 2,204 ADOPTED including 1,207 Cats and 997 Dogs 619 Dogs and their owners attended our behavior and training classes 154 Lost pets were reunited with their grateful guardians 2,993 Pets fed through our Fido s Food Bank in alliance with our partner Kibblez of Love 6,065 Affordable vaccinations provided for cats and dogs and Neuter 773 Animals were provided care through our volunteer including 3,052 Foster Program Community Cat Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) Surgeries Sally and John Isham proudly donate their car! 6,412Spay Surgeries! Did you know... One more way you can help the animals is by donating a vehicle to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. We accept a variety of vehicles including: trucks, boats, RVs, golf carts, vans, moving trucks, box trucks, trailers, and gently used generators.
