Thanks to the caring support of friends like you, 2015 will be one of the biggest and best years in the history of the League. More importantly, it will be one of the best years ever for the animals of our community. We re on a pace to provide critical and lifesaving services to more than 35,000 animals this year! Already, nearly 3,000 animals have been adopted. More than 8,000 animals have been spayed or neutered. Nearly 5,000 pets have been fed through our free food bank (Peggy s Pantry, located here at the League). It s easy to get lost in numbers like these which is why I hope you ll take time to read about Sky, Possum, Jack and Bruno four very special animals you ve helped save in this issue of The Shaggy Sheet. On page 4, you ll read about how June 23 rd was more than just the League s 90th birthday. On that day, Palm Beach County adopted Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate- Return (TNVR) as the official county approach to managing the free-roaming community cat population. This was a monumental step for our community to take as we work toward achieving our Countdown 2 Zero goal of saving every adoptable pet in Palm Beach County. Naturally, the focus of The Shaggy Sheet is always on the incredible impact your support is having on the lives of thousands of animals, most of whom you ll never meet. However, on pages 8 and 9, you ll read about our new Peace of Mind program that I hope will be a benefit to you and your own beloved pets. 3 THANKS TO YOU, THIS PLACE MAKES HISTORY. The League Celebrated its 90 th Anniversary in June The League s actual birth date is June 23, when, in 1925, eight women in Palm Beach officially launched what was then called the Animal Rescue League to address the ongoing problem of animals left behind by winter visitors returning north. During the month of June, the League hosted a number of events and activities to celebrate the momentous occasion. Kittenpalooza the single largest kitten adoption event in the history of the League was held on June 7. The lobby of the Grace Pavilion was transformed into one giant kitten adoption center for the day. Hundreds of people were greeted by more than 150 adorable kittens and in just six hours 69 kittens were adopted! Stay tuned Kittenpalooza 2 is already being planned! On June 20, the League kicked off a week of festivities with discounted vaccines and microchips for the public and a fee-waived adoption promotion that ran for the entire week, ending in grand fashion on June 27 when Palm Beach Outlets sponsored a community-wide anniversary party. Nearly 50 pet owners and friends of the League posed for pix in a special photo Jennifer Ross and the street team from Sunny help to make the fun! 90TH ANNIVERSARY booth, with the winning shots receiving prizes. Nearly every shelter animal that was featured at the Outlets was adopted that day (see Bruno s story on page 16). Jennifer Ross and the street team from Sunny participated, encouraging listeners to stop by with their pets and take a happy birthday photo. Whole Foods Market donated cupcakes to all who came, while Schumacher Automotive offered test drives and PetSmart gave out goody bags to participants celebrating the day. June ended up being one of the best months in the history of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League with 310 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies adopted into new, loving homes And the photo booth winners are: Syrlena Verotti Ferreira Eric Keefe and Wendy White Heather Sills including Midnight (the cat pictured to the left) who, on June 26, became the 2,000th adoption of PeggyAdams.org 3

4 Launched in 2014, Countdown 2 Zero is a public-private partnership between Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. Its goal is to ensure that all adoptable animals in Palm Beach County are being saved by the year Another historic day for our community Palm Beach County Adopts Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return Programs June 23 not only marked the 90th anniversary of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, it was also the day on which the Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) as Palm Beach County s official approach to address the challenge of free-roaming, community cats. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League initiated its own TNVR program in 2010 and we are excited that our partners at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control will be able to implement TNVR programs that will save the lives of thousands of cats each year. Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return Works Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) is a humane and proven alternative to the traditional catch and kill method of community cat control. Not only is catch and kill more costly to taxpayers, it also does not address the root of the problem which is reproduction. As soon as one colony of cats is removed, another moves in to take advantage of the newly available shelter and food source. This new colony continues to reproduce and the cycle continues. This well-documented vacuum-effect is a cruel and endless cycle that does not solve anything. TNVR, on the other hand, humanely and effectively stops the cycle of reproduction, allowing the population of cats to stabilize. Also, cats treated through TNVR are less susceptible to disease and cease to display undesirable behaviors associated with mating (spraying, fighting, etc.). Another benefit of TNVR is that by stabilizing and reducing the community cat population, we will also be protecting wildlife, birds in particular. And by effectively reducing the cat population and the birth of litter after litter of kittens, it reduces the number of cats being brought to the County shelter which can equate to significant savings to taxpayers. 4 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League TNVR has already proven to be successful here in Palm Beach County. Since 2010, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League s TNVR program has spayed or neutered more than 16,000 community cats. Last year alone 5,000 community cats were trapped, sterilized, vaccinated and returned to where they were found through the League s TNVR program. And last year we witnessed a 17% decrease in the number of cats entering our shelter and the County shelter combined. Since 2010 when the League started its TNVR program, our two shelters have seen a 50% decrease in the number of cats entering our facilities. Countdown 2 Zero Adoption Event Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is proud to host the 2 nd Annual Countdown 2 Zero Adoption Event, presented by The Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, Inc. Set for Saturday, September 12, from 10 am to 6 pm inside the Palm Beach County Convention Center, this free event will feature several hundred of Palm Beach County s best dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, guinea pigs and rabbits available for adoption. Organized by the League and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, the Countdown 2 Zero Adoption Event is a collaborative effort of more than two dozen local animal rescue organizations to save the lives of animals in Palm Beach County. In 2014, over 25 local animal rescue organizations participated and more are expected this year. Over 300 animals found their forever homes at last year s inaugural event. This will be the biggest one day adoption event in the history of Palm Beach County, said Rich Anderson, Executive Director & CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. 5 In July, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League received a $200,000 grant from PetSmart Charities that will have a tremendous impact on our efforts to protect and save the lives of cats in our community. The grant will help significantly increase the number of free spay and neuter surgeries available for owned and free-roaming cats in West Palm Beach (Zip codes & 33409) and Lake Worth (Zip codes & 33462) over the next two years. Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control and Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League received a combined total of 11,386 cats last year, with nearly 2,000 of them specifically from these areas of Lake Worth and West Palm Beach. The grant is expected to subsidize more than 4,000 surgeries. Project CatSnip News Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Receives $200,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities to Spay or Neuter More Than 4,000 Cats We are tremendously grateful for this generous funding from PetSmart Charities in support of our Countdown 2 Zero initiative to save the lives of animals here in Palm Beach County, said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/ CEO for Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Combating overpopulation is a big goal to work towards, but thanks to PetSmart Charities, we will significantly reduce the problem of homeless and neglected cats not only in these areas, but in our county as a whole. Community cats brought to the shelter in traps are accepted on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday. Spay Days 2015 an Amazing Success! Mark your calendars for the next Spay Day October 16 Cats are by far the most at risk animals in Palm Beach County and Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is committed to helping our community prevent unwanted litters of kittens. Thanks to the generous support of friends like you, the League has been able to schedule multiple Spay Days in On these days, the League offers free spay/neuter surgery for anyone s pet cat. So far, we have held three Spay Days this year (February, June and August) during which more than 600 cats have been spayed or neutered. Stretching each dollar to do the most good is essential. Our Recurring Giving Program is THE most cost-effective way for you to help the League save lives every day. And since donations are handled electronically, costs are kept low which means more of your donation can directly support the animals (and not be spent on fundraising costs). It s also green. Fewer pieces of mail mean a cleaner environment! Plus, it s convenient and easy and aren t we all looking for convenience and ease in our busy lives? As a life-long animal lover, I have contributed to rescues for as long as I can remember. I have also rescued many animals myself and if I had a bigger house, I d have more! My husband might disagree with that, but he loves them just as much as I do even if he s too macho to admit it. I wish I had time in my busy life to volunteer, but since I don t, I choose to donate. And now it s as easy as pie! I just went online to peggyadams.org and signed up for online giving. It s secure, it s better for the environment and I don t have to think about it. Each month, my donation is charged to my credit card, that s it. I receive s that tell me when the donation will be charged, so I know in advance. And I even get an if my card has expired and I need to update the information. So convenient! The best part is that I know I am helping the animals and the environment at the same time. 7 The Sky s the limit! This Shelter Dog is now an Autism Service Dog When Canines 4 Hope, an organization that certifies Service and Therapy dogs, needed a dog for Riley, a 7 year old Autistic child, their search led them to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Cindy, a member of the Canines 4 Hope team, came to visit Sky (a black mixed breed dog) and instantly fell in love with her. Cindy knew she was the perfect dog for Riley. The next step was to arrange for Riley and Sky to meet. Cindy was right! Sky and Riley became buddies immediately. Sky is now in training to learn how to help control Riley s tantrums, how to prevent impulsive running, and how she can even help Riley control an eating disorder she suffers from. These are just a few of the many skills Sky will learn before moving in with Riley and her family and to begin her new life of love and service. Veterinary Team Travels to North Carolina for Advanced Spay/Neuter Training Humane Alliance, located in Asheville, North Carolina, is a nationally recognized training facility for high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgery. Since 1994, the Humane Alliance has performed over 362,000 surgeries. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League was selected to be part of their National Spay/Neuter Response Team. Through this partnership, the League is able to offer ongoing, onsite training for current and new staff at Humane Alliance. The League also will receive additional benefits, including online continuing education, discounted pricing for medical equipment and supplies, and veterinary consultation visits. During the week-long, hands-on training, our staff learned new surgery techniques, how to improve efficiencies so that we can benefit more animals, and ways to improve clinic team communication. 8 PEACE of MIND Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Forever Friend, Jackie Sims, with her mackerel tabby, Lexi Forever Friends Now Eligible for New Peace of Mind Pet Care Program at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Jackie Sims had a problem. She has two cats who are the delight of her life, but who would care for them if something happened to her? She learned about perpetual pet care programs offered in other parts of the country, but was discouraged that none were available in Palm Beach County. One is now, thanks to Jackie and other supporters who expressed their interest. Rich Anderson, CEO/Executive Director, of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, working with Trusts and Estates attorney Andy Helgesen, announced that effective September 1, 2015, the League will offer a new Peace of Mind Program as an option for members of the League s Forever Friends society. In addition, a new information page on many additional options for planning for your pets future will be available on the League s webpage on that date as well. We are committed to helping the people of our community plan effectively for their pets, Anderson notes. We never know what might happen to us accidents, illnesses and of course, there s the whole concern about who will care for our pets after we re 8 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League gone. The League s resource page on Planning for Your Pet s Future, is available on its website There are lots of different ways to make arrangements for your pets, Anderson notes. The important thing is that you take some time to actually make those plans. We hope our information will help everyone who has a pet to think about this and get plans in place. Peace of Mind for our Forever Friends: How the Program Works If you are a member of the League s Forever Friends legacy society, you are eligible to enroll your pets in The Peace of Mind Program. The program provides for long term, permanent care of your pets when you are no longer able to care for them. It takes effect the moment the need arises. Will provisions and letters of instruction can be delayed by the time required to administer an estate, and a pet trust requires the guardians you have named to be as able and willing to serve as they were when the trust was initially established.

9 With Peace of Mind, there is no delay. Your pets are cared for at once. To be eligible for the Peace of Mind program, you need to have made a minimum commitment of $25,000 to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League via a bequest, life insurance policy, retirement account, or other planned gift vehicle that names the League as a beneficiary. You ll want to consult with your attorney and financial advisors to customize a charitable giving vehicle that fits your own specific situation. The Peace of Mind program is available for up to three pets. If you have more than three animals, please contact the League to discuss what options might be available to you. site visit to any prospective home to determine its appropriateness for your pet. 3. Your pet will be entitled to free annual medical exams at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League for the rest of its lifetime. 4 Your pet will be entitled to free basic medical care and treatment as needed at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. 5. The League will be sure your pet s microchip is current. 6. The League will touch base with your pet s new family annually to be sure all records, necessary licenses, and vaccines are up to date. Your pet s new family will be encouraged to provide current medical, health and basic profile information each and every year. These reports will be maintained by the League so they are readily available if ever needed. 7. If something happens to your pet s new family, the League will always take your pet back and honor the program to keep it in a loving home for the rest of its life. The pet will be accepted at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League with no delay. After being examined by the League s veterinary team and deemed of good health and temperament, your pet will be placed in a League-supervised Foster Care Home rather than in the kennels. While in the care of its Foster Family, the League will make every effort to find a permanent home for your pet that is as similar as possible to its home with you. 2. 10 PLAYING POSSUM Possum came in as a stray kitten on New Year s Eve, 2013, weighing just a pound. He was in rough shape: congenitally underdeveloped eyes, slightly misshapen legs, and ringworm! It took months of painstaking care by his foster mom, but he steadily gained weight and grew stronger. He also had some help from his best friend Chipmunk she was his seeing-eye cat, and helped him learn how to get around and gain confidence in a big, scary world that he couldn t see. By April of 2014, he was strong and healthy and ready to find his forever home. He and Chipmunk were adopted together, leaving the shelter with their new daddy on April 12, Possum when he first came in Possum, now Forest Gump today Chipmunk, now Jenny Blessing of the Animals Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Berman Gardens This past June, we received an update from their dad who shared that they are getting fat, that s what they re doing! He lovingly laughs that he has renamed them Forrest Gump and Jenny, because Jenny was always there for Forrest, just like Chipmunk is always there for Possum. They are getting along well with his 15-year-old dog, and all three enjoy being together. Forrest knows how to get around the house and he knows his dad. He gets along with great senses of smell and hearing. So much affection and delight have come from a situation that was so severe. 11 From the Adoption Files: Jack A Happy Tail Early this year we received a call from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League asking if we d be willing to foster a very special dog. He was rescued by the Humane Society of the United States from a hoarding case and Peggy Adams had taken him into their shelter to help him find a forever home. He was named Jack and very fearful of all people. We volunteered to take him in as a foster as we had a lot of experience with special needs dogs. We brought him home to our pack of rescues and it became apparent he was very comfortable with other dogs, but hid trembling behind the furniture when Connie or I came into the room. We knew patience, consistent behavior on our part, and showing him how we loved all of our dogs, would help him learn it was safe here. Slowly he would crawl from his hiding spot to lay by our feet while we watched TV. Weeks went by and Jack slowly learned about love as he came to me for head rubs, then belly rubs, and then becoming a full-on lap dog! Kisses soon followed and before long he came to accept Connie into his world, stretching from my lap to give her the occasional kiss. Full speed laps around our fenced yard became the norm as his confidence grew. Playtime became a pure delight for Connie and I to witness. We were thrilled to see this once extremely fearful, young boy feel safe and become the dog he wanted to be. Soon it became apparent he would be ready for adoption. One night, with Jack lying across our laps, Connie said to him, you re never leaving, are you? The thought had been just under the surface that we may yet again be foster flunkies, but we found ourselves victims of his charm, innocent (almost childlike) loving nature, and his need for a caring home. We were hopelessly infatuated with him. So we spoke the words, let s adopt him! and on May 5th Jack became part of our family. And you know what? He knew instantly and we could see it in his eyes that he was home at last! Thank you Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League! Thank you, Dan and Connie, for being two of our many special volunteers and for helping us save Jack s life! Cars for the Cats! 12 The Quiet Room It is a little known fact that Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has a special room, maintained by volunteers in partnership with the shelter and clinic staff, that supports cats who are struggling to adapt to a shelter environment. The idea to create such a space came from the volunteers who now lead the room, Lisa Pepe Fernandez and her mother, Beverley Pepe, along with others including Uli Carson, Anna Ziegler and Laurie Whetstone. Our Volunteer Program Manager, Tara Pregnolato, sat down with Lisa recently to talk about The Quiet Room. Lisa & Bev Lisa: On average, 12 at a time. As soon as one gets adopted, it makes room for a cat from another area that needs the Quiet Room, so we are always full. Sometimes there is a waiting list to get into the Quiet Room. Tara: Wow! And how many volunteers are part of the team? Lisa: We have 18 volunteers right now and some are seasonal. We have a morning shift and an afternoon/ evening shift every day. The room is 100% volunteer run so we need a solid group of volunteers. We even have some volunteers who cannot commit to a shift, but fill in when we need extra coverage. Tara: How long have you and your mother been involved with the League? Lisa: We have been volunteering since We started the Quiet Room in Tara: How did the Quiet Room come to be? Lisa: A few of the cat volunteers got together to start a socialization team that spent time working with the scared cats in one of the big cat rooms. We noticed that they would improve with the extra attention but then they would back track when they were moved to another location or when it was a busy day and there was more noise. We got together to talk about a solution and then we decided to ask if we could have a room somewhere at the shelter to start a Quiet Room. Tara: How many cats does the Quiet Room accommodate at one time? 12 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Tara: What type of volunteers are you seeking for the Quiet Room? Lisa: We need volunteers who have a heart for cats and are comfortable working with cats who are scared and shy. We are asking for anyone interested to commit to one shift per week (or more if they re able). If someone is interested but cannot commit to a weekly schedule, we can discuss an on call option so they can fill in for other volunteers, should the need arise. There is also feeding, cleaning and regular room maintenance involved, as well as advocacy work to aide in their eventual happy adoption! Tara: If you could tell the world something about the Quiet Room cats, what would you say? Lisa: They are very adoptable and very sweet. The love that is shared with them by the volunteers translates into the love they ll show their new families. You just have to meet them to see for yourself. Volunteering in the surgical suite at the League is probably the most rewarding things I ve ever done, says Leslie Abi-Karam, one of the newest members of the Leadership Circle. I ve been involved with wildlife conservation in Connecticut and with rescue work for many years, and am extremely impressed with how Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is run. Even more, I m inspired by the impact it is having on the quality of life and on saving lives for such a high volume of animals. I made a Leadership Circle donation when I first moved to the area, and then later got involved as a surgical volunteer. Now that I m behind the scenes, I can attest to an amazing amount of compassion and respect that every staff member shows the animals. It s not just a job. They show real care and love. 16 Trash to Treasure: Bruno s Story Shows What 90 Years of Care and Compassion Have Meant to More than 1 Million Animals since 1925 Imagine being hurled over a 6-foot high fence next to heavy traffic in the middle of the night, painfully abandoned by your family. You hurt from bruises and cuts, you don t know where you are or why you ve been thrown away. That s what happened to Bruno the week after Memorial Day this year. When we found this beautiful, healthy but frightened young dog cowering on the League s grounds the next morning, he had no microchip so we had no way of contacting any family he may have had. As kennel staff processed him into our care, he leaned against them for comfort and reassurance, and showed a sweet, outgoing disposition, one that attracted a loving new family to him at our 90th Anniversary celebration June 27th! Bruno, a lucky young boxer who found a loving new home after being tossed like trash by the side of the road The League was established in 1925 in response to the ongoing problem of animals left behind by winter visitors returning north. Since its founding 90 years ago, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has helped more than 1 million animals, averaging more than 25,000 cats and dogs every year in recent years. We are incredibly grateful for so many caring and generous people who have made our work possible decade after decade.
