4 SHOULD I GET A DOG? Article coutesy of The short answer is, of course, yes! If you never had the fortune to grow up with dogs, or to know a friend who had a dog, you do not know the amazingly fun times you are missing! Depending on where you live and what kind of dog is right for you, you can take it swimming, hunting, walking around, on the bus, on a jog, or simply just to the dog park to meet other like-minded dog owners. While there are many considerations to go over as to whether a dog is right for you and your current situation (Do you have the space? Do you have the time?), dogs are scientifically proven to be good for the person who owns them and their family. So, if you have a house with a nice backyard and have a spare hour a day, get looking for a new sidekick! Following are some of the most impressive reasons that owning a dog isn t just a costly endeavor. One good thing about owning a dog is that they will help you live longer. That s right! While pets provide their owners with the love and company they so desire, it is difficult to say exactly why people who own dogs live longer. There is evidence that dogs can help you reduce your blood pressure! This article probably does not have to tell you how fun it can be to play with your dog, cuddle with your dog, or just hang around and watch your dog experience new things. Well, owning a pet can lower your blood pressure as effectively as if you were to start eating a low-salt diet or restricting how much alcohol you drink. So get a dog, then grab a beer. This is why many hospitals and retirement community centers hire on a dog to come in and engage in animal therapy with the patients and residents: not only does it help old people by reducing their blood pressure and offering them a distraction from any worries or sad thoughts in their lives, but it also acts as a calming presence that eliminates loneliness. At this point in the article it is already clear that dogs are somewhat of a wonder cure for many of life s ills! Studies by the US Department of Health have come to the conclusion that pets helped victims of heart attacks. The study reads that 28% of heart patients who also had pets survived serious heart attacks, while only about 6% of people without pets made it through. If that s not enough, you can also measure how much good it does you to own a dog by measuring your before-andafter waistline. A recent study has concluded that pet owners had 2% lower cholesterol than those without pets, and those pet owners chance of going through cardiac arrest was reduced by 4%. Not only are dogs good for you, but they are good for your kids, too. You do not need to read studies to view the delight on children s faces as they play with dogs. But, just in case that was not enough evidence for you, a few studies have been done to prove how good it is for kids to own pets. A certain study showed that children who were in the vicinity of a dog during their physical examinations had reduced blood pressure, less behavioral problems or distress, and lower heart rates than when a dog was nowhere to be found. In conclusion, a dog is sometimes hard work. If you ve never owned a pet before, you may have to become accustomed to picking up the feces of your companion at the most inopportune times. The dog, depending on what type it is, may be aggressive or too timid, very easy or very hard to train, and may either be too smart for its own good or not live up to your standards of intelligence. These are the facts. However, if you give them love, they will return it with all of their energy--it is what they were bred to do and why the humans have let them stick around for the past thousands of years. 5 by Hannah Marrero HURRICANE SANDY THE AFTERMATH Hurricane Sandy Images coutesy of Google Images Early on October 29, Hurricane Sandy made a sharp left turn, moving north-northwest landing ashore near Atlantic City, NJ as a post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds. In the U.S., Hurricane Sandy affected at least 24 states, from Florida to Maine and west to Michigan and Wisconsin, with particularly severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Its storm surge devastated NYC, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power in and around the city. Flight cancellations and travel alerts on the U.S. East Coast were put in place in the Mid-Atlantic and the New England areas. From October 27 through early November 1, airlines cancelled a total of 19,729 flights and Amtrak canceled services in preparation for the storm. Never before has the eastern seaboard been hit so hard. Families, lives, businesses and houses were washed to sea, or blown away never again to be found. And the ones that made it are living a first time experience. The most simple commodities of life, like water, bread, gas, were unattainable. Families were stranded and awaiting relief. More than 500,000 pets were displaced as a result of the devastation, as well. Many have not yet been returned to their families and are still missing. A state of emergency has been declared in almost every state on the eastern seaboard. The storm, which hit the United States one week before the election, affected the presidential campaign as well as local and state campaigns in storm-damaged areas. Thousands were warned to evacuate, but chose to ignore, expecting another Hurricane Andrew. Hurricane Sandy; the East Coast Katrina was a category 2 storm at its peak intensity. At least 199 people were killed along the path of the storm in seven countries. $52.4 billion in estimated damages have been reported. A total of 24 U.S. states were in some way affected by Sandy, destroying thousands of homes, leaving millions without electric service, and killing over a hundred. As of early November 1, just over 4.8 million customers remained without power in 15 states and the District of Columbia, according to a CNN tally. The storm underlines the fragility of the aging American infrastructure, with an electricity network that is ranked lower than that of considerably poorer nations. A 50-foot piece of the Atlantic City Boardwalk washed away. Half the city of Hoboken, NJ flooded; the city of 50,000 had to evacuate two of its fire stations and the city s Mayor asked for National Guard help. In the early morning of October 30, authorities in Bergen County, NJ, evacuated residents after flooding in several communities. Police Chief of Staff Jeanne Baratta said there were up to five feet of water in the streets of Moonachie and Little Ferry, NJ. The state Office of Emergency Management said rescues were undertaken in Carlstadt. Baratta said the three towns had been devastated by the flood of water. At least 24 people in the state were killed. New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, called National Guard members to help in the state. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq reopened on October 31 after a two-day closure for the storm, the first weather closure of the exchange since More than 1,500 FEMA personnel were dispatched along the East Coast working to support disaster preparedness and response operations, including search and rescue, situational awareness, communications and logistical support. On November 2, the American Red Cross announced they have 4,000 disaster workers across storm damaged areas, with thousands more in route from other states. Nearly 7,000 people spent the night in emergency shelters across the region. The East River overflowed its banks, flooding large sections of Lower Manhattan. Battery Park had a water surge of ft. Seven subway tunnels under the East River were flooded as of October 30. The MTA said early on October 30, that the destruction caused by the storm was the worst disaster in the 108-year history of the New York City subway system. Sea water flooded the Ground Zero construction site. In addition, a four story Chelsea building s facade crumbled and collapsed leaving the interior on full display. However, noone was hurt by the falling masonry. Gas shortages throughout the region led to an effort by the U.S. federal government to bring in gasoline and set up mobile truck distribution at which people could receive up to 10 gallons of gas, free of charge. This caused lines of up to 20 blocks long and was quickly suspended. On Thursday, November 8, Mayor Bloomberg announced odd/even rationing of gas would be in effect beginning November 9 until further notice. Hurricane Sandy sparked much political commentary. Many scientists say warming oceans and greater atmospheric moisture are intensifying storms while rising sea levels are worsening coastal effects.
