1 VOLUNTEER POSTION DESCRIPTION PET ADMISSIONS TITLE: Pet Admissions: Evaluation Specialist - EV- TA MAJOR OBJECTIVE: To assist the Evaluation team staff in processing shelter animals for adoption. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assist in processing animals by tagging, weighing, properly restraining, taking pictures of, and vaccinating animals awaiting adoption 2. Moving animals to kennels as needed 3. Work closely with the Evaluation team coordinators in assisting with the kenneling of animals into the adoption kennels 4. Clean and set up kennels 5. Comply with the League s philosophies and policies QUALIFICATIONS: 1. This position requires self-motivation and the ability to work well without direct supervision. 2. Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment 3. Comfortable with or willing to learn proper cat and dog restraint 4. Proficient in Chameleon and data entry 5. Proven Animal handling skills 6. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 7. Minimum 18 years of age

2 TRAINING: 1. Attend a 2 ½-hour orientation program 2. Interview with the Volunteer Services department representative 3. Attend the Dumb Friends League 101 training session covering League philosophies, policies and procedures 4. Watch Dog Walking Basics webinar 5. Attend three-hour Animal Care Kennel Training, three months as an animal care technician preferred 6. On-the-job training provided by the Pet Admissions manager and Evaluation team coordinators TIME AND PLACE: Quebec Street Shelter, seven days a week, mornings, afternoons, or evenings. COMMITMENT: Three hours a week for a minimum of six months. SUPERVISION: Direct supervision by the Pet Admissions manager and supervisors, indirect supervision by the Volunteer Services manager BENEFITS: 1. Continuing education programs 2. 3 Dog-Dog Testing Owner Surrenders and Shelter Behavior Good History, under 6 months, and under 70# s: Questionable History/Shelter behavior or dogs over 70# s: No test needed Test or Kennel with another dog (play group is acceptable when applicable)* Leash Reactivity o Good History: Kennel with another dog o No or questionable history: Dog test needed Barrier Frustration o Good History: No test needed. Try to kennel with another dog o Questionable or unable to break focus: Dog test needed Fighting (with or without minimal injury): Dog test needed Resource Guarding (food or food item): No test needed is good history otherwise. * If unable to kennel with another dog, a dog test will need to happen Bad History: 315 Attacking another dog causing punctures or death Dogs re-directing and breaking skin on a human will be marked for 315 Pit Bulls Will be tested with 3 separate dogs ^ Pit bulls are considered: American Staffordshire Terrier American Pit Bull Terrier Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rescues and Bully Breeds^ Will be tested with 2 separate dogs ^ Bully Breeds (in the primary or secondary breed) consist of: Bully Breeds American Bulldog English Bulldog Tosa Dog Boxer Bull Terrier Cane Corso Boerboel Dogo Argentino How to Perform the Dog Test Team meets in Intake Lobby o Teams of 2. (1 Intake Associate, 1 Behavior Tech, and/or 1 Customer Care Associate) o A volunteer will be taking notes and entering the test in Cham. If no volunteer, a 3 rd team member will need to be involved to take notes Individuals will retrieve dogs and walk to Adoption Play Yard

4 o Meet ½ way with the dogs Walk side-by-side to play yard o Once in Adoption Play Yard, drop leashes if comfortable (5 minute meet) If questionable test, or no interaction use 2 nd dog. o When using 2 nd dog, the interaction starts from the beginning. We will use the same size dog as the dog being tested o Dog not being tested will have a good history (including shelter behavior) o Dog not being tested will be within 10 lbs (over/under) of dog being tested. o A stuffed/fake dog can be used as an option during the initial meet How to Perform the Dog Test (Buddy Center) Team meets in Adoption Lobby o Teams of 2. (1 Intake Associate, 1 Behavior Tech, and/or 1 Customer Care Associate) o A volunteer will be taking notes and entering the test in Cham. If no volunteer, a 3 rd team member will need to be involved to take notes Individuals will retrieve dogs and walk to front of building o Meet ½ way with the dogs (outside adoption lobby) Walk side-by-side to play yard o Once in Adoption Play Yard, drop leashes if comfortable (5 minute meet) If questionable test, or no interaction use 2 nd dog. o When using 2 nd dog, the interaction starts from the beginning.
