The 2015 National Gun Dog Championship and National Open Puppy stake were held at Mingo sportsman Club, Bloomingdale, Oh on March 28, with record-breaking entries from across the country spanning states from California to Michigan to Florida, it was set up to be an exciting and competitive event! This year s event was well titled including 1 Grand Field Champion, 16 Field Champions, 21 amateur Field Champions, 8 Dual Champions, 1 Grand Champion, 7 Master hunters totaling 44 entries! The National Puppy stake boasted 15 entries reaching states from Texas to New hampshire. The two very seasoned judges mounted their horses and were introduced. Greg Nicholson from New Jersey came with 30 plus years of experience under his belt. The second judge, Mike aldrich from New Mexico, weighed in with more than 50 years and dozens of national assignments to his credit. The judge s marshal, Chris Young from Pennsylvania, was also a seasoned quality GsP man with loads of Championships to his credentials. Chris also helped in the layout of the course and the salting of the birds. Many things go into a quality trial; from dogs, to handlers, to judges, none more important than lots of quality birds along with someone who knows how to plant them. Thank you to Chris Young for all of your help! The sun rose over the eastern ridge and the horses, dogs, and for that matter us (the frozen people) scrambled to feel the heat from the sun s rays. it was cold, 9 degrees cold. The staff was very busy preparing for the start of the 2015 NGDC and the puppy stake. The bird planter went to salt the course as the temperature rose quickly to a balmy 20 degrees. The excitement filled the air, as the first brace was called to the line around 10:30am. The gallery of 25+ was ready to see what the Dakota s east of the Mississippi looked like. Brace 1: a: CK Countryside sugar sally sally Owner/handler-Ron Chenoweth/James winnen B: Red wind Riverview whoa Nellie Nellie Owner/handler-Clint sails sally broke away hard and big, as she crested the first big hill. she made a very nice move to the inside of the course. sally ran a very nice brace, showing style and handling well. Nellie got off the line a little slower than her brace mate. she seemed a little bit overwhelmed until she made the left off the big hill. it was easy to see her confidence growing, as she maneuvered through the course. Nellie finished very strong with a lot of poise. Brace 2: a: Paradox he s all Business luke Owner/handler- Nancy heinold B: a sumer Night s song Cricket Owner/handler-Ben Bowman/andrew Turner Brace 2 was very similar to Brace 1. Cricket made some early moves to the top of the big hill and hunted the far edge like a seasoned shooting dog. Cricket was stylish and biddable and finished strong. luke came off the big hill, gangbuster style, as he crossed to the front, had a nice piece of bird work. luke ran hard for most of his brace, but favored one foot at the end possibly a pad issue or a flat tire in the right front. Bad news for a dog and handler, but luke demonstrated he belonged in this group of quality dogs. Brace 3: a: Red wind stonecutter Gemma Owner/handler-Clint sails B: huckleberry of scarlett hill huck Owner/handler-Matthew hill Gemma was all business from jump start. she moved hard and forward with big shooting dog pattern. she handled well. she hunted as hard and as big as she ran. she scored multiple bird finds, as did most of the puppies. Gemma s biggest asset was the maturity and poise she showed as she maneuvered the course. For her page 16 - The Vizsla News

performance, she was rewarded with the blue ribbon and crowned the winner of the puppy stake. Brace 4: a: Jamball s Flying scotchman scotch Owner/handler- amy Ball B: Valley hunter That Boy Can Boogie Boogie Owner/handler- Pat Carney This was an exciting brace to watch. scotch broke away big. i could only say holy Cow what a powerful animal. scotch is one dog that could have really benefited from a horseback handler. he made huge moves out, but without the handler able to work him from a horse and steer him to his objectives, scotch would retrace his big move. The scout did a good job and the handler did the best she could from foot. This puppy is going to be a lot of fun when he matures and becomes a big shooting dog. Boogie took the right edge up and over the big hill and continued to impress the gallery (and the judges) when he stayed on the right edge and stayed on all his lines only coming off for clearly known objectives. Boogie handled the course very well, with a mature pattern without the need of any guidance from the handler. a very confident and classy puppy. Brace 5: a: Red wind Midnight Memories at Cider Creek zayn Owner/handler-Russ Bigus/Clint sails B: Mythic s Valkyrie Kyrie Owner/handler- Tania Campbell with four quality braces under our belts, the bar was set high if you wanted in the ribbons. zayn made a super move up the big hill and over the top. he rimmed the right side and stuck a bird. zayn moved on and let everyone know he was here to compete. after more bird work, zayn moved to the front. zayn s only blemish was a flat spot at 15, finishing strong. in this field, that was enough to move zayn from 1st to 3rd but a great showing for zayn. Kyrie worked the big hill in a mature pattern. she came off the hill and towards the center of course. Kyrie had her first find at 9 and looked just like her daddy, Danny. Kyrie continued to work forward and give a very respectable performance. Brace 6: a: BGK Gots The Moves like swagger - Jagger Owner/handler- Nathyn Knipe B: Ramblin Rivers Rolling stone stone Owner/handler- Bill stapleton This is one of those braces where both dogs feed off each other in a positive way, adding much excitement and pleasure watching the brace. Jagger was the more mid-range shooting dog, while stone had a big shooting dog range. Jagger showed his intelligence in working the wind and the terrain with some exceptional bird work. The quality of pattern and smartness in his use of course put him 4th in the ribbons among a great field of young dogs. Brace 7: a: Mijuda s ziva ziva Owner/handler- Kyle Kolwaite B: Redpointe s Bound to be a 1st Time for everything eko Owner/handler- amy husband Barnes/Clint sails ziva has an attractive gait and lots of busy energy. ziva ran hard and hunted hard, demonstrating much future gun dog potential. ziva handled well for the full 20 minutes and made her handler proud for a job well done. eko showed a lot of promise. when eko made moves, they were forward and smart. eko s lack of experience hurt him in this highly competitive stake. The handler must be proud of what she saw in a young dog with raw talent. we look for big things from eko in the future. Brace 8: a: Jamball s surefire sassy Vixen sassy Pants Owner/handler- amy Ball B: Bye sometimes dogs reflect their names and sassy fits that bill. sassy can make huge moves and when the handler would try to turn her. her namesake would shine through as sassy would choose her own place to run. sassy has all the makings for a national caliber dog. she is exciting to watch and we look forward to seeing many quality performances from sassy on the gun dog scene. all in all (except the early cold), it was enjoyable to watch these young dogs and was truly a quality stake. The spectacular grounds, plentiful amount of birds and top notch judges made the stake fitting to participate at a national event. as the puppy stake concluded, it was now time to reset for the gun dog. The bird planter went back out to get the course ready, the judges readied as they mounted their horses. Mike aldrich returned to the saddle from the puppy stake, along with Kevin Culver, who has had over 30+ years training and running his own dogs, as well as judging many national events. Bill Monk, an accomplished trainer and judge, contributed to the event as judge s marshal, and joined the two judges at the line. The large gallery assembled as amy Barnes announced the first brace. and the 2015 NGDC began!! National Gun Dog Championship Scribe Notes Thank you Paul hermes for volunteering to scribe for the NGDC. Day 1 Brace 1: a: Barben's Riding The Daisy Train "sadie" Owner/handler: Daniel Bowen B: FC afc Redoak's Vivace By Barktalk sh CD "Viva" Owner/handler: Marcia schlesinger The first brace broke away at 2:15 with many people in the gallery doubting the validity of global warming. with a biting wind and temps in the teens, the course was not for the faint of heart. if nothing else, it was not well received by a thin-blooded Floridian who was in 80 degree weather not 2 days earlier. so, anyway, like i was saying, the first brace broke away at 2:15. Viva pointed at 2 minutes with sadie backing. sadie was moved on while Viva relocated in an unsuccessful attempt to pin the The Vizsla News - page 17

down the course. Both dogs finished out the hour in a consistent manner but without an opportunity to retrieve. a setup was done after time for each dog, both of which completed their retrieves successfully. Note: around this time, Justin allen was assisting in the capture of birds for the remaining braces. he remained in the bird pen involuntarily while another volunteer delivered the birds to the course. Brace 9: a. FC wegler's Crown Royal "Roy" Owner/handler: Greg wegler B. Ch Pajkos semper Fi special Ops Mh "Gunny" Owner/handler: Jim spencer Roy got on the board first with a find at 18 minutes with Gunny backing. Gunny moved on while Roy completed his bird work and retrieve in a satisfactory manner. Roy notched a second find at 23 minutes in the woods and handled it well. Gunny notched his first find at 28 minutes, working the bird successfully. Roy apparently had been following the bird planter, as he found additional birds at 28, 42, 44, 47, and 58 minutes. Gunny s next find was at 54 minutes. at this time, in front of God and everybody, Roy concluded that honoring was a highly overrated experience, so while he finished the hour strong, his bid for the championship was brought to an unfortunate end. Not having had an opportunity to retrieve, Gunny was provided a setup after time was called, and he completed his retrieve successfully. Note: after an hour, Justin finally realizes that nobody was ever going to discover that he had been locked in the bird pen. at this juncture, the esteemed Mr. allen managed to break himself out of the pen and rejoin the fun. Much pointing and laughing was done. Brace 10: a. afc Dream weaver Totem Mh ax axj "Uncle shine" Owner/handler: Jan wallace B. Crimson's Double Twenty Gauge "Gauge" Owner/handler: Mark spurgeon Gauge had the first find at 10 minutes at the trees at the end of the first line. The bird was expertly shot by Diane, the better looking of the two Fazios, with a single shot. Gauge was sent for his retrieve and completed it in good order. shine s first find was at 14 minutes without an opportunity to retrieve. shine s next point came at 24 minutes. after a lengthy search and relocation, shine carded a nonproductive. at 30 minutes, shine had his opportunity to retrieve. after standing solid until being sent, shine executed a lengthy search but was unable to locate the bird. shine s bid ended at this time. Gauge went on to record additional finds at 45 minutes and 46 minutes, the second of which involved an entertaining display of ring-around-the-bush by handler as the quail initially refused to fly. Ultimately, Gauge handled everything with proper manners and finished the hour. Day 3 Your scribe had a tough time getting up this morning, as the time on horseback in cold temps and a stiff wind took its toll on his body and soul. he did manage to get up, but missed the first and third braces of the day since he was running in the 2nd. Much thanks to the esteemed Mr. Justin allen for helping fill in the blanks for the missing braces. Brace 11: a. FC afc skegemog Point Princess zoey "zoey" Owner/handler: Jeff zenas B. FC afc Barben's storm warning sh "stormy" Owner/handler: Barbara zahn, Trish Burdin/Tania Campbell zoey got in on the action first with a mannerly find at 18 minutes. a safe shot was available and successfully made, with zoey completing a satisfactory retrieve. stormy found her first bird at 24 minutes; this one was a runner and a shot was not possible, so the handler blanked her gun and moved on with all in order. stormy s next find was what one could consider a tricky situation. after being sent on a blind retrieve, stormy went on point on a large, moving covey. stormy refused to break point, so the judges opted to have the handler fire her blank gun and move on to attempt the retrieve on a future find. her next find came on a covey at 41 minutes; a shot was not possible, so a blank gun was fired and stormy handled the find with proper etiquette. Find #4 resulted in a missed shot, (i can t honestly say if Bill Fazio was the one that missed the shot - but i say we blame him anyway). stormy s last find at 55 minutes resulted in a shot bird, a successful retrieve, and a very happy handler. zoey recorded additional finds of her own at 25 and 35 minutes, each of which was handled well. Unfortunately, zoey s nice run came to an end on a breach of manners on a covey find in the 50th minute. Brace 12: a. southwind's Nothin Runs like a Deere "Johnny" Owner/handler: Jody Beckley B. soco's absolut One Jack Black Jh "Jack" Owner/handler: Mike Bick/ Paul hermes Jack and Johnny broke away well to the front, with John recording the first of his five finds at 20 minutes, resulting in a fired blank gun and nice manners. Johnny s second find was - appropriately enough - near the johnny house at 30 minutes. again, this find was handled well. Johnny recorded 3 more finds, all handled with nice manners along with a successful retrieve. Jack s luck didn t quite turn out the same. he put together an honest effort for the full 60 minutes but unfortunately was not rewarded for his efforts and came away birdless. Brace 13: a. Razn Vin De Garde Jh "Vin" Owner/handler: Mick Cheshire B. On-Point Vizsla's zoey "zoey" Owner/handler: Dan Olson/ Bill stapleton zoey had a find at 15 that was handled in good order. her handler elected to pick her up at 45 minutes and her day was ended. Vin notched 4 finds at 22 minutes, 27 minutes in the woods, 35 minutes down by the lake, and finally at 50 minutes on the last hillside. Vin performed admirably on all of his bird work, exhibiting nice manners and finishing with a nice retrieve on his final page 18 - The Vizsla News

find. Vin proceeded to complete the hour. Brace 14: a. GCh DC afc zydeco's First You Make a Roux sh "Filé" Owner/handler: ashley Uffman B. Ch Tierah's The spy who loved Me Mh "Bond" Owner/handler: lisa Bender These two bird finding machines put on a nice display of bird work. Bond had the first bird barely 3 minutes into the brace and handled it with proper manners. Right after that, Filé had a find of her own that she handled well. at 13 minutes. This bird was shot and fell down a steep hillside, which proved not an issue for Filé, as she executed a prompt and mannerly retrieve. Filé s next find at 20 minutes concluded with all things in order. Near the far end of the course, Bond had a find at 28 minutes in the woods, which he handled nicely. 2 minutes later, Filé was found on point in the vicinity of the johnny house, which was also handled with all in order. Filé tallied additional finds at 39 minutes, a covey find at 45 minutes, and a single at 57 minutes, all of which were handled with class. Bond s find at 31 minutes was a retrieving situation. Four shots were fired, yet the bird defied the odds and stayed alive. On Bond s next find at 37 minutes, this bird did not have the same luck and was downed with one shot. Bond was sent for the retrieve and completed it in a mannerly fashion. Bond had 3 more finds at 42, 50, and 56 minutes. all three were handled well and both dogs went on to finish the hour. Brace 15: a. DC afc Rsh Crk smpr Fi Marine Raider "Raider" Owner/handler: al lucas B. FC afc wegler Penny lane "Penny" Owner/handler: Greg wegler Raider had the first find at 3 minutes at the top of the hill. Penny made it a short day for her handler, failing to back and sending her in early. Raider moved on to a pop gun find at 13 minutes, followed by a missed shot on a bird at 23 minutes. shortly after moving on, Raider encountered another bird that flushed in front of him and brought him along for the ride, thus ending his eligibility for placement. Brace 16: a. Diamond C's Ruby Jewel "Ruby" Owner/handler: sabrina Corliss B. FC afc smoken' JRD sh "JR" Owner/handler: Rodney albin Both dogs broke away strong to the front, with JR being seen point at 9 minutes. his enthusiasm was too much to bear, however, and JR committed a breach of manners and ended his NGDC bid at this time. shortly thereafter, Ruby was found in the woods on point at 13 minutes, resulting in a mannerly piece of bird work. Ruby s next find at 18 minutes was a very uncooperative little twit. Ruby held steady on a long-distance point while her handler attempted to flush, but the bird refused to fly. after an earnest flushing effort, the handler fired her blank gun and moved on. her next find at 39 minutes was another situation in which a retrieve was not possible, so a blank was fired and Ruby moved on with all in order. Ruby s find at 49 minutes would have been a retrievable situation, if the bird had not flushed on its own before the gunners or handler were in position. handler fired her blank gun and Ruby held steady for another successful piece of birdwork. in the 50th minute, Ruby s final find was another bird that refused to fly. This find was blanked and Ruby handled it successfully. at the conclusion of the hour, a setup was done for Ruby and she handled her retrieve in good order. Brace 17: a. Tibercreeks Billy The Kid "Pistol Pete" Owner/handler: Mark Calder B. NGDC DC afc JB's asker Bout Birds Mh "Kinze" Owner/handler: Jody Beckley Kinze got the first bird at 3 minutes with Pete backing. all birdwork was performed successfully and both dogs moved on. Kinze s next find was at 11 minutes with Pete backing. Pete moved on, and after a search and relocation, Kinze s handler blank gunned the find and moved on with all in order. at 20 minutes, Kinze was on point again, resulting in a safety situation and a fired blank gun, with all proper manners on display. 7 minutes later, Kinze was on a bird again, resulting in a missed shot and an escaped bird. Kinze s next find at 41 minutes was with Pete backing and resulted in good manners on the part of both dogs. Pete had another find at 48 minutes, resulting in a shot bird and a retrieve. Unfortunately, Pete was favoring a leg and had to end his run at this time. at the same time, Kinze was found pointing on the far side of the lake. her handler managed to get over to her and flush the bird with all things in order. Time expired without a retrieve from Kinze, so a setup was done, with Kinze executing a successful retrieve. Day 4 after the posting of yesterday s report, we learned of an incident that demonstrates the level of sportsmanship seen at this event all week. Portions of the course are a bit rough and hard to get across on foot, and at one of these places, Bond s handler, lisa, lost her balance and dropped her blank gun. Not long after, Bond went on point. Realizing the situation she was in, Filé s handler, ashley Uffman, did not hesitate to hand over her gun so that lisa could complete the birdwork. Val sails then came forward to loan her a gun for the remainder of the brace, and the gallery later managed to locate her lost gun and return it to her. it might not seem like much to some, but it s those little instances of helping each other out that build up and really make a difference. Kudos for showing us how it s done. Thank you. anyway - finally, a day with reasonable temperatures. Very slight, infrequent drizzle in the morning, but conditions were nice and well-suited for the dogs for the vast majority of the day. with the past few days taking their toll, our original scribe was not able to ride braces today. Much thanks to Mrs. ashley Uffman for taking over note taking. The Vizsla News - page 19

Brace 18: a. FC afc MVsDCh Crimson's lord Rigby Of linden Jh "Rigby" Owner/handler: Mark spurgeon B. southwind's Three shots Of Crown "Three" Owner/handler: Mick Cheshire Rigby and Three put together an active brace, with Rigby nailing the first find at 23 minutes. The bird was flushed and a safety was called, so the handler blanked the find and moved on with all in order. Three was seen standing at minute 27 - this bird was shot and Three completed a mannerly retrieve. Rigby pointed at 31 minutes and worked the bird with all things in order. Three followed up with another find at 30 minutes, also handled with all manners intact. Three s find at 35 minutes was followed by an unsuccessful flushing attempt and was ultimately scored a nonproductive. Rigby scored three additional finds at 37, 43, and 50 minutes, handling all in good order. Three s last find was at 55 minutes and handled well. Rigby finally got his chance at a retrieve shortly thereafter, which he performed successfully. Both dogs finished the hour. Brace 19: a. FC afc Dacapo By Barktalk sh CDX "Topper" Owner/handler: Marcia schlesinger B. FC afc Tommy's Dixie Chick "Dixie" Owner/handler: steve whitney Dixie got on the board first with a find at 13 minutes. Proper manners were presented and Dixie moved on to a second point at 25 minutes in the woods. The bird was shot; when Dixie was sent, she encountered a second bird and attempted to retrieve it. This turned into an irretrievable situation and Dixie was moved on down the course. at 35 minutes, Topper had his retrieving opportunity, but shots were missed and Topper was moved on down the course. Topper was seen standing again at 55 minutes and handled the find with proper manners. Topper went on to finish the hour. Dixie was found standing at time. she finally had her chance to retrieve, which she completed in good order. Brace 20: a. FC afc Fieldfire's spark O' Genius sh "Geena" Owner/handler: Joan heimbach B. DC afc Justeals Kytankerous Commander sh "Captain" Owner/handler: Justin allen Captain got his retrieve out of the way early. at 10 minutes, he was found on a stylish point with Geena backing. The gunners promptly downed the bird and Captain performed a proper retrieve. shortly thereafter, Geena was found standing in the woods. her bird was flushed and her handler pop gunned it with all things in order. Captain was found on point again at 15 minutes and performed with good manners. at 22 minutes, Geena had her first shooting situation. The bird did not cooperate and a safety was called. Geena handled it well and moved on down the course. at 24 minutes, according to the judge s own words, Captain encountered a wild flushed bird and had a chase that was beautiful to watch, but a stop to flush would have been nicer. Thus, Captain s bid came to an end after a nice performance up to that point. at 50 minutes, Geena was found standing in the woods; a blank gun was fired and Geena moved on. a setup was done for Geena after time was called, and she performed a wonderful retrieve. it must be noted that, of all the nice performances we have seen all week, the most applause was heard for Miss Geena, as this thirteen year old classy young lady finished the hour in good form. Brace 21: a. DC afc Rushcreek semper Fi high style "Macy" Owner/handler: Clint sails B. FC VK's Twenty Gauge Gunnar "Gunnar" Owner/handler: sherwin Van Kooten/ Mick Cheshire Gunnar picked up his first point early on, 5 minutes into the brace. after blanking this gun, the handler moved his dog on with all in order. Macy was found standing at 20 minutes. Gunners were at the ready, but the flight of the bird created a safety situation, so the handler blanked and moved his dog on. a short time later, an unanticipated burst of enthusiasm caused a breach of manners that ended Macy s day and provided an unwelcome birthday gift to her mom. at 36 minutes, Gunnar was found standing. The gunners were able to get a shot off, and with the bird on the ground, Gunnar completed a successful retrieve. Gunnar followed up with another find at 38 minutes that was also handled well. Gunnar s day came to an end under the tail of a bird at 51 minutes. Meanwhile, at 50 minutes, Mark Calder demonstrated impressive agility and coordination; during an unintentional dismount, Mark landed square on his feet with reins in hand, as if getting off had been his idea the whole time. Brace 22: a. NwGDC GFC FC JB's Double action Ruger "Kota" Owner/handler: Jody Beckley B. Bye Kota came in season after the draw, but was luckily already listed as the bye dog. Kota broke away and was found standing at 11 minutes. The handler worked the bird and blank gunned with everything going as planned. Kota followed up with finds at 24, 36, and 45 minutes, all of which were handled with proper manners. at 58 minutes, Kota s handler elected to pick her up following a nonproductive. Brace 23: a. Valley hunter Designed For The hunt RN sh "Vivienne" Owner/handler: Pegi zelneronok Crimson's Twenty Gauge Dakota "Dakota" Owner/handler: Mark spurgeon That early bird showed up again, with Dakota pointing at 2 minutes and handling her birdwork in a mannerly fashion. at the end of the first line, Vivienne had her first point at 11 minutes. Vivi s handler flushed the bird with all things in order. Dakota had a find with Vivi backing at 16. This resulted in a picture perfect piece of birdwork with both dogs moving on. at 17, Vivi had a point, but a safety was called and a retrieve was not possible. Vivi was found standing again at 31, again with a retrieve not possible, so a blank was fired and Vivi moved on. at 51 minutes, Dakota s handler elected to pick her up. Vivi finished the hour with addipage 20 - The Vizsla News

tional finds at 40, 50, and 56 minutes. Retrieves were not possible on any of them, so a setup was done after time was called, with Vivi completing a successful retrieve. it is uncertain if Vivi s handler s joy was due to her dog s performance, or the rousing rendition of "ice ice Baby" courtesy of Justin allen and andrew Campbell.
