2 Nominating Committee Report The 2014 CVC Nominating Committee met in the second quarter to consider the positions to be filled according to the CVC By-Laws (adopted December 2011) ARTICLE IV, SECTION 5.Terms of Office (a) The term of office for each Officer and Member-at-Large shall be two years. The President, Corresponding Secretary, and two Members-at- Large shall be elected in even years. The committee was chaired by Joye Blanscett, with members Michelle Dowd and Stephanie Estes, with Julia Guinn as the alternate. They queried the four individuals whose office was up for election and each said they would run for another term (each term is two years). 4 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ~ India Cox Hello CVC Members, As we slide into the holidays and final events of the year, the Board is grateful for this year s wonderfully successful events that CVC volunteers have organized for the breed and other pointing breeds three conformation shows (two Specialties and one Supported Entry), two field trials, two hunting tests and the annual Fun Day plus all the achievements of CVC Rescue. What a vital club we have! And it s all driven by volunteers who want better for the breed. I have been reading newsletters from the 1970 s and, in 1976, there are several notices of AKC approving CVC to hold Sanction matches before being licensed to hold AKC events such as our Specialty and Supported shows. Field trials were approved, but the club s were open only to Vizslas. Today, we compete with the best of them! Those volunteers of the 70 s built the platform upon which we stand today. We are building/maintaining/improving/adapting the platform upon which future Vizsla aficionados/lovers will stand. What do we want that platform to look like? What role will each of us play individually and collectively? Give it some thought and figure out where you can contribute to supporting and prospering this wonderful breed. Our Annual Meeting / Christmas Party / Raffle for Rescue will be Saturday, December 6, at the Lodge at Shady Grove in Remington. They are held in conjunction with our fall hunting tests (which will be close by at Phelps WMA). The announcement on page 5 has the details. Show up! It is a ton of fun! At the Annual Meeting, the membership will be asked to approve the slate of officers, all of whom have stepped up to serve another two-year term ~ Jane Baker, Linda Pruitt, Trysh Swift and myself. Also, membership dues are due in January! Remain a part, be a part! On a personal note, this is my last newsletter as editor. I have been editor since 2008 and have loved it all. Callie Turner is taking the reins. Please support her with your input, ideas for articles and advertising. 6 CVC s Fall Specialty Makes Its Debut at ODKC by Britt Jung On September 28, 2014, the CVC held its second specialty show of the year as part of the Old Dominion Kennel Club (ODKC) show. The ODKC show is held at the historic Long Branch Plantation in Millwood, Virginia. This is a beautiful venue, the kind of special venue that the conformation committee was seeking. This was the first time the CVC held its specialty at this show, on these grounds, and club members and exhibitors seem pleased overall. We had the good fortune of a gorgeous fall day. Judging for Sweepstakes classes began in the late morning, allowing time for the grass to dry and time for exhibitors to leave their homes a little later than normal. Mr. Jason Hoke presided over the healthy sweepstakes entry of 17. Best in Puppy Sweepstakes was awarded to Sincerus Cicada from the 6-9 month puppy class; she is bred and owned by Philip and Kelly Park and handled by Kelly. Best in Veteran Sweepstakes, from the year old dog class, was awarded to GCh Ankerdale s Zsemle Szerenyi. He is bred and owned by Barbara Hannum and handled by Rachel Romano Kelly. Dr. Dana Smith-Massey judged the regular class entry of 45 with only three absentees. Dr. Massey awarded Winners Dog for a 3-point major and an Award of Merit to Willorunn s I, Buckeye from the Open Dog class. He is owned by Veronica Kelly and was bred by Dot, Rachel, and Ania Kelly. Winners Bitch and Best of Winners went to Sincerus Cicada from the Bred-by- Exhibitor class for a 4-point major. Dr. Massey judged her non-regular classes (Hunting Dog and Veterans) following Winners Bitch. Her best of breed entry included 18 champions, plus the Hunting Dog and Veterans class winners. Dr. Massey awarded Best of Breed to GCh Tivoliz Easy Breeze, owned by Will and Lori Conroy and Deborah Stern and bred and shown by Deborah Stern. 7 Following judging, the club sponsored a luncheon, which included entertainment in the form of the raffle. The lunch was very well attended, and we were able to send leftover supplies to the field trial the following weekend. It was great to see so many Board members at this event. ODKC also sponsored a Meet the Breeds event, where Stephanie Estes represented our club and breed. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the raffle. It was difficult to find the right place to hold it in order to make it visible to everyone, but thanks to all who contributed and supported it. For the first year in this venue, it was a success, raising almost $300 for the club. Many thanks to Rachel Romano Kelly for organizing the raffle and helping coordinate the set-up for the hospitality on site. Thanks also to Terry Lucas, Kelly Park, and India Cox for helping organize, set up, and take down the hospitality. Thanks to our trophy donors (see next page). Thank you to Barbara Hannum, Iva Fisher, Rich and Melina Black, and Laurie Cahill for helping hand out trophies, for bringing desserts, and helping with set -up and clean-up. 9 CVC s Fall Field Trial Another Success On 4 6 October the Conestoga Vizsla Club hosted its 45 th annual fall trial. It was held at Phelps Wildlife Management Area near Sumerduck, VA. Open to all AKC pointing breeds, we had 94 entries [editor s comment ~ and here is what is important ~ every dog was handled by an amateur and all but two who placed were handled by their owners.] The weather was beautiful, neither hot nor cold with plenty of sunshine. Although we had to yield half of the grounds on Saturday because it was opening day of bow season, we finished in plenty of time on Monday. by Terry Lucas, Secretary Saturday night we celebrated and thanked our judges with our traditional steak dinner attended by more than 30 hungry field trailers. Desert was birthday cake as we celebrated the birthday of long time CVC member and judge Julia Bonar. Our premiere stake was the Amatuer Gun Dog in which 26 dogs started. All placements went to non-vizslas but Jay Callis with Ember and Laurie Fairchild with Maddie both won a Judges Award of Merit. No small feat in a stake that size. Clint Sails with Macy won the Open Limited Gun Dog Stake, Retrieving, to take home the Del and Helen Seelye Traveling Trophy. We had a good entry in the young dog stakes and first-time field trailer Susan DelaPenta won a third place with her puppy Winston. Trials this size don t flow smoothly without a good field trial committee, and we had a good group Melanie and Russ Bigus, India Cox, Corinne Miklos, Kitty Pullen, and Callie and Andrew Turner. Thanks to all for a job well done! Callie as line marshal must have walked 50 miles going back and forth to the breakaway to make sure dogs were on the line for their brace. 12 In Memoriam Amazing Mother Daughter Combo Belle s Victory Fire and Lady Brinkley Both of these wonderful girls passed over the Rainbow Bridge this summer. We miss them dearly. Belle always ran every where she went ~ ranking nationally as high as # 7 Derby. Her daughter (by FC AFC Semper Fi Colonels Pride) grabbed #1, and won both the 2006 VCA National Puppy Stake and 2006 VCA National Derby. You two changed our lives. 13 From Rescue Raffle for Rescue ~ December 6! by Pat Hudson Come Make a Difference for Rescue! Raffle for Rescue is Always Great Fun Supporting a Great Cause! Bring items for the raffle and a side for the dinner table CVC will provide the entrée and sodas. I ve been busy collecting for the Raffle for Rescue. Some folks have delivered items to me and some have sent contributions. Of course, you can bring them with you to the Annual Christmas Party / Raffle for Rescue / CVC annual meeting! Looking forward to having a fun time on December. 6, I hear there maybe Moonshine aga! The money raised for rescue is used for: vet bills for dogs that have no proof of vaccinations or need to be tested; food (many come with nothing; some with lots of items); and heartworm and flea-and-tick meds. Material that is contrary to the goals and policies of the American Kennel Club, the Vizsla Club of America, Inc., the Conestoga Vizsla Club, Inc., or that criticizes or is detrimental to members of the clubs, dogs, or the sport of dogs, will not be printed. All items submitted are the property of the club and will remain on file for possible future use. If a member desires that pictures be returned, they must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Disclaimer ~ The opinions expressed herein do not necessarily express or reflect the opinions of the Conestoga Vizsla Club (CVC), its editor, its officers, directors or members. Dogs and kennels advertised in the Stud Dog/Breeder Listings or elsewhere do not constitute an endorsement by the CVC. Resolution ~ The Vizsla Club of America and the CVC have resolved that all breeding stock is to be radiographed and that only those animals certified free of hip dysplasia are to be used for breeding purposes. Prospective breeders and puppy buyers are urged to inquire as to the OFA certification of both the sire and the dam prior to any purchase. Breeders in the Stud Dog/ Breeders Listings must be CVC members. In keeping with this resolution, the CVC newsletter will not accept ads for any male Vizsla over the age of 24 months or any female Vizsla over the age of 26 months that does not have an OFA number except as follows: Congratulatory ads from sires and/or dams to congratulate their progeny on achievements need only have OFA numbers for the sires and/or dams whether or not the progeny is over the age of two years. Dogs mentioned in ads or articles of an informative nature with regard to medical or personal experiences do not require an OFA number nor those mentioned in reports. Memorial ads do not require an OFA number. All ads (except Wags n Brags") concerning the accomplishments of a dog in performance event(s) must include dog's full OFA number and date of birth. Wags n Brags" must include the following information: Full AKC registration name and number, placement awarded, location of win and owner's name Ads for puppy litters will not be accepted unless the sire and dam had OFA numbers at the time of breeding. Complete OFA numbers must be submitted with each request and will be printed in full. Nifong Blvd., Columbia, MO , 573/ Resolution ~ The officers and boards of directors of the Vizsla Club of America and the CVC, in cognizance of the respective responsibilities to protect the breed and foster its development, do hereby condemn cross-breeding of purebred Vizslas and falsification of registration documents. All persons following the Vizsla fancy are enjoined to subscribe to this ethic in the best interest of the breed. Resolution ~ The officers and boards of directors of the Vizsla Club of America and the CVC, in cognizance of the respective responsibilities to protect the breed and foster its development, do hereby condemn the breeding of dogs with serious genetic defects including: epilepsy, PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), von Willebrand's disease, entropian and cranial muscular atrophy. Code of Ethics Sportsmanship ~ CVC members will: Always conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect credit upon themselves, their Vizslas and the sport of purebred dogs, regardless of the location or circumstance. Always protect and advance the development of the Vizsla through continued improvement of soundness, stable temperament, natural hunting ability and conformation as set forth in the official Vizsla Standard. Health ~ CVC members will: Maintain the best possible standards of canine health, cleanliness and veterinary care in an atmosphere conducive to the stable development of their dogs. Breeding ~ CVC members will: Breed only with the intention of improving the breed by breeding only those Vizslas that conform to the standard as recognized by the American Kennel Club, exhibit soundness, stable temperament and natural hunting ability. Breed only those dogs that are free of serious hereditary defects (including epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, von Willebrand's disease, entropion and cranial muscular atrophy), are over two years of age and have been x-rayed and are OFAcertified free from hip dysplasia. Sales ~ CVC members will: Not breed, sell, or consign puppies or adult dogs to pet shops or other commercial ventures such as lotteries or raffles. Honestly evaluate the quality of the Vizsla sold and fairly represent that evaluation and urge puppy purchasers to spay or neuter all pets that for any reason will not be used for breeding. Not release puppies under seven weeks of age. Furnish details on feeding, care, inoculations, pedigrees, and written sales agreements. Screen all prospective buyers to assure that puppies have safe and loving homes. Supply assistance and support to puppy buyers for the life of the dog. Encourage owners to become involved in Vizsla activities, the Conestoga Vizsla Club, the Vizsla Club of America and/or other regional Vizsla clubs.
