A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT NCSC Members, The 2016 water training season officially ended at the NCSD Water Test on Sunday, October 16th. Believe it or not, a number of us are already out draft training and gearing up for fall draft tests. Our test will take place on Sunday, December 11th at O Melveny Park in Granada Hills. Contact Test Chair JoAnn Stark with any questions or if you d like to help steward that day. Stewarding is a great way to see the test up close and learn more about this fun event. We are in the planning stages for our Spring 2017 draft test, and details will be announced as soon as we know them. At our annual Fall Picnic and Election Meeting, we welcomed our new board for the club year. Very warm thanks go out to Melanie Bigelow and Mark Banda for their years of service on the NCSC Board. Welcome to Ellen Selsted who will be serving as our Corresponding Secretary. Heidi Forrest will serve on the Board of Directors, and she recently offered to take on the duties of Membership Chair. Marian Howie who will be serving on the Board of Directors. Our other positions remain the same as the club year (Karrie Cook-President, Celia Gebhart-Vice President, Kathy Wortham-Treasurer, Shannon Gasowski-Recording Secretary, Board Members- Gigi Griffith, Debby Rothwell and Erin Zimmer). Our next fun event is our 4th Annual Christmas Tree Pull that will take place on Sunday, December 4th. Ray Shapland is chairing this event, so please contact him if you d like to volunteer for this event. We need dogs that can haul trees, dogs that can pose for pictures, dogs that can sit for petting, and many human volunteers to make this event a continued success. Our annual dinner will take place in March Debby Rothwell is chairing this event and in search of a venue, so please contact her if you have any ideas. Be sure to fill out the awards application contained in this issue prior to the deadline of February 13th for award consideration. There are many different awards, not just those for titles, so check out all of the descriptions. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that your dog is eligible for an award or two or three. Our first event of 2017 will be back-to-back Regional Specialties on Thursday, January 5th (hosted by Mesquite Newfoundland Club) and Friday, January 6th (hosted by NCSC) at the beautiful Empire Polo Club in Indo. There will be supported entries on both Saturday and Sunday, January 7th and 8th. This event is not to be missed, and the grounds of this show are absolutely gorgeous. We anticipate entries from multiple states, and we will have another fantastic raffle, and our fun and popular Properties Classes will return. The NCSC Board will be meeting soon to plan the calendar for If you have any ideas for fun and new events or have a great fundraising idea, please contact me or a Board Member to share your ideas. This is your club and we depend on our membership to make it the best it can be. Our annual Working Dog meeting will take place in January If you have any interest in participating in training for or exhibiting at working events (draft, water, etc.), this would be a great meeting for you to attend. At this meeting, we choose dates for training and tests, select judges, and establish the test committees. Please let me know if you'd like to receive more information or attend the meeting. I wish you, your families, and your beloved Newfoundlands (and other animal family members) a wonderful season and a happy and safe new year. Happy Holidays! Newfondly, -Karrie Cook 2

Annual Newfoundland Picnic by Helen Do Happy Holidays! The Annual Newfoundland picnic was the first club event I chaired, and it was a blast! Unfortunately, the event was cut short with rain, but we sure had lots of fun and left with full bellies. I want to thank Hedi for getting the permit, Erin and Chuck for getting the meats and BBQ for us. It was greatly appreciated. The picnic is a great opportunity for club members to kick their feet up and relax. Also a wonderful time for members to meet and greet. The club has hundreds of members and I ve only met a handful; my goal for this picnic was to bring together as many members as possible. The picnic was held at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. We had our annual election meeting, costume contest and other games. We also met some new and potential members. In our costume contest, we had 3 amazing winners! Rory and Ozzy as TY beanie babies. 6

Newest member Zeus as Chic-Fil-A (above) and Baloo as Cruella de Vil (below). 7

The winners received a gift of their choice. Next we had games that tested the owners tossing capabilities and the newfie's catching abilities. Potential member Elizabeth with Beowolf and Erin with Sterling won the treat tossing game. We look forward to seeing everyone next year at the annual picnic! 8

Winter Camp Newfy 2017 by Hedi Forrest Hello everyone, Winter is almost here, at least it will be in the San Bernardino mountains. I would like to plan a Winter camp Newfy the weekend of Februrary 3-5. There are no local dog shows to my knowledge on that weekend. This has been on my get away list ever since I have gotten Logan as a puppy,(he was born in Russia after all and depriving him of snow would be a sin) but life happened and I just never got to do it. Well, 2017 is the year to have fun in the snow with my Newf. Either way, it will definitely be on my "to do" list for 2017 and I hope that some of you will be able to join me in the fun. Bring your carts to do some training in snow (provided there will be snow this year) or just let your dog have fun running in the snow. There are several hotels that allow dogs, one of which is the Pine Rose Inn in Lake Arrowhead which has six cabins that are pet friendly. Don, Luke and I stayed there many years ago and we really enjoyed it. The Northshore Inn in Crestline has three pet friendly rooms (the owner has a St.Bernard. Pyr mix) and the Quail Cove Inn in Fawnskin also has pet friendly cabins. I am sure there are more. Please let me know if that is something you would be interested in doing with a group of Newy lovers. I cannot imagine how much fun it would be for our furry cold loving Newfs. Have a very Happy Holiday Heidi Forrest, Bixby and Logan 9

2016 Water Test by Chairperson Emily Floyd Once again, Castaic Lake was the site of our 2016 Water Test. Because of the low water level in the lake, it was the middle of summer before we were certain that we would have this site. It was warm as usual, and we also had the Santa Ana winds to contend with. On Saturday morning, the golf cart was not working, so we had the added challenge of hauling all the equipment and food. Thank goodness newfie owners have large carts to haul crates. In spite of all this, we had a great water test, and several dogs got new titles and several re-qualified. We had dogs being judged in all three levels on Saturday. WRDX tested first and had three dogs entered. Sadly, no dogs qualified but some were close. Next, WD was tested. This time we had five dogs entered, and again, sadly no dogs passed. Some of them just missed passing. The dogs all showed how much they enjoy water work. Finally the WRD dogs tested. Six dogs were entered and we had one new title earned. The new title was earned by Nakiska s Calm Waters WD handled by Cathy Sayre. Our afternoon was plagued by the Santa Ana winds. The poor dogs had to contend with objects and boats drifting quickly and in unpredictable directions. The judges, dogs, and handlers all did a terrific job in navigating the confusion the wind had caused. Meeara at the water test Deborah Rothwell. On Sunday, WD tested first in the morning with nine entries. We had one new title earned and two requalifiers The new title was earned by Aukai I Got To Ramble handled by Ginger Gomez. The two re-qualifiers were Juneau WD WRD1 handled by Marian Howie and Karableus Main Sail Mearacle CGC DD2 WD WRD handled by Next came the WRD dogs. This group had the same windy conditions as yesterday to contend with, and it may have even been worse. There were five dogs entered and none of them passed. 17

PAWPRINTS DECEMBER - JANUARY Juneau handled by Marian Howie We had four judges over the two-day period. Lanelle Warrick from Buckley, WA judged all three levels on both days. Our own Deborah Rothwell from Long Beach, CA judged WRDX on Saturday. Also from our club, Heidi Forrest from Long Beach, CA and Karrie Cook from Huntington Beach, CA were judges this year. Both were observer judges last year, and we were happy to have them judge for us this year. Thank you to all the committee members who helped make this a successful weekend: Debby, who answered a million of my questions; Erin, the secretary who helped with everything; Shannon, my third member who help with hospitality set up and clean up; Kathy, for putting together a great group of hard working stewards and judges Meara and Debby Rothwell 18

The overnight wind played havoc with our buoy markers which had to be repositioned each morning. Thank you Fred Freuh for towing the club trailer to the lake on Friday and Debby Rothwell and Peter Schran for taking the trailer home on Sunday. Our club lost an amazingly talented working dog this year. Our test was dedicated to her memory. 20 The Bouchon Bacon & Chicken Liver Dog Treats by Becky Stoner Treat Ingredients: 1 pound sliced bacon, cut into 1 inch wide pieces 13 oz. chicken livers, cut into ½ inch pieces ¾ cup + 1 tablespoon fine cornmeal 3 cups + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup chicken stock Ketchup Glaze Ingredients: 3 tablespoons ketchup 1 tablespoon egg whites FOR THE TREAT: Position the racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat oven to 250 degrees. Line two sheet pans with silpats or parchment paper. Heat a large nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the bacon and cook for about 5-7 minutes, until it has rendered its fat and is a rich golden brown. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels. Pour off all but a generous coating of bacon fat. Add the chicken livers to the pan and sauté, turning them frequently and smashing them slightly, with the back of a large spoon, for about 5 minutes and broken down to a paste. Remove from the heat. Place the bacon in a food processor and pulse a few times to grind it. Add the chicken livers and process to combine, and then add the cornmeal and process until you have a coarse mixture. Transfer the mixture the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add the flour and mix to combine. Slowly pour in the chicken stock and mix until the dough begins to gather around the paddle and feels moist to the touch. Remove the dough from the mixer and knead it just enough to combine. Place the dough between two pieces of parchment paper and roll out the dough to 3/8 to 1/2-inch thick sheet. Using a dog bone cutter, cut out the treats and arrange them on the prepared sheet pans. Knead the trimmings together, roll out, and cut out the additional treats. Bake until the treats are completely dry, about 1½ hours in a convection oven, 3 hours in a standard oven. Remove from the oven and lower the temperature to 200 degrees. FOR THE GLAZE: Combine the ketchup and egg whites; the glaze will be very thick. Brush the glaze over the top of the warm treats. Return the pans to the oven and bake for minutes, or until the glaze has set. Place the pans on a cooling rack and cool for 5-10 minutes, then transfer the treats to the rack to cool completely. The treats can be stored in a covered container for up to 1 month. Makes approximately 45 treats. 20

Walk on the Beach Sunday, January 29th, Huntington Dog Beach Come out and enjoy a walk with your Newf down a one mile stretch of beach dedicated to dogs and their owners. Enter the dog park nearest Goldenwest Street & PCH. Head down to the beach then walk toward the American flag on the cliff until you see Beau s red wagon and a swarm of big dogs. 27 RESCUE REPORT Happy Holidays everyone! Sadly, this is the time of year when people decide to dump their pets, and Newfies are no exception. We are running low on foster homes maybe because a lot of former fosters adopted their charges and now have a full house? Whatever the cause if you would be able to foster a dog for us a dog who was a decent fit for your lifestyle and household Karrie Cook would love to know this information. We depend on NCSC members to foster since they are the most Newfoundland savvy people around, understand Louie at Long Beach Shelter 27

and respect our policies, and ensure the safety of the dogs. Sometimes Newfs need to come into rescue on a moment s notice, and it decreases our stress (a lot) if we have a list of ready fosters. Recently we had to board a dog for a week at the veterinarian; he was safe and well cared for, but, emotionally and assessment-wise, it is less than ideal. Our foster parents give us a ton of information that enables us to choose the right permanent home for the pup. We give thanks all year long for our kindhearted fosters and our generous donors. We need both to keep our program viable! Thanks to the prodding of Lynn Hirth (now Rezzuti!) Ed McKinnon added a PayPal button to the Rescue page of the club website. Now it is very easy for our friends and members to make a donation with the click of a (virtual) button! Lynn and new hubby Tony requested donations in lieu of wedding gifts and Newfy rescue was a lucky recipient. Donations in honor of the happy couple were made by Fred & Jean Frueh, Erin & Chuck Zimmer, Laurie & Rich Ed McKinnon added a PayPal button to the Rescue page of the club website" Shapiro, Daniel Rezzuti, Jeff Conklin and Denise Purcell. Congratulations and best wishes to Lynn and Tony! Ann Filsinger made a donation to Rescue and sent these words: Although I do not own a Newf now, my old Newfs and the club are always in my thoughts. With great appreciation to Newf Rescue. Kathleen Trudell and Philip Pincus make an automatic payment every two weeks in thanks for our help directing them to a Newfie mix years ago. Moose from his road trip I am sad to say we received many donations in memory of wonderful 28

Newfs who have crossed the rainbow bridge. Honorary Newfy owner Kim Conley donated in memory of Kathy Mitchell s sweet boy Brodie. Drew and Susan Sones donated in memory of Maggie the Magnificent, their girl from SCNRC. Pamela and Dave Forney donated in loving memory of their Emma, a girl they adopted from SCNRC years ago, and their foster Oreo. Oreo s story is below. In the last report I mentioned a donation from Gretchen Notley. In all my years in NCSC I have never met Gretchen, but she always donates in memory of Piglet. Piglet must have been a very special Newf indeed to still be loved and remembered so many years later. But we can all relate to that! Thanks to the chance meeting in 2004 of Debby Rothwell and Victoria Till, a board member of the Carl Jud Foundation, we received a financial gift again this year just in time for Thanksgiving. I give Debby the credit for the $23,800 we have received from this charitable organization over the years!!! We are thankful beyond measure! Now let me tell you about the dogs NIKKI - Available Nikki is an adorable brown female who was returned to the shelter by an adopter who definitely wasn t Newf-savvy. She is being fostered by Celia and Dennis Gebhart. Celia reports Nikki was at their house less than 10 minutes when she showed that she was a water dog by jumping in the pool and doing laps. Nikki s health and temperament will be assessed during her stay at Chez Gebhart. In the first 3 days they have found out that she loves belly rubs, she is housebroken and crate trained. She seems to very much enjoy the company of the Gebhart s boys Tucker and Quint. 29

LOUIE - Available Poor Louie wound up back in the Long Beach shelter after his adopter of 7 months turned him back in for reasons not revealed to us. Rescue tried to pull him when he was in the shelter in March, but this shelter, like many, prefers that the general public have first chance to adopt purebred dogs. That policy didn t work out so well for Louie. He is estimated to be over 7 years old though foster parents Ed and Virge McKinnon think that is impossible due to his energy! In March he d had a mass on his shoulder removed but it was not biopsied to get a diagnosis. 7 months later the scar still had a crusty discharge so we had the scar surgically removed and were very relieved to learn it was just inflammation and scar tissue. After spending a week at the shelter, Louie was kenneled at our vet for another week while he had his medical needs addressed and we located a foster family. The vet staff reported that Louie had TONS of personality and was a really funny dog! He is also a champion counter surfer/problem solver. He saw the cookie jar on the vet s counter and solved his problem of wanting a cookie by jumping right up and trying to nose the container off of the counter! He s not sneaky either; he did this right in front of me! Ed reports that he must have been trained at some time, at least a little bit, because he is starting to understand basic commands as if they were coming back to him. Louie gets along great with Newfs Barney and Katie McKinnon. He would not be good in a household with a cat (as reported by the vet staff.) He is ready for adoption by an active person/ family who knows that age is mind over matter. We are hugely grateful to Becky Stoner for interfacing with the shelter staff, getting Louie out and meeting Laurie Shapiro at Arbor Animal Hospital with Louie. Louie at the vet 30

OREO/OBIE Rainbow Bridge Rescue is not always full hearts and happy endings. I don t know too much of Oreo s story beyond what I can glean from his medical records, but he had a first family who did not seem to understand the needs and behavior of a giant breed dog, and a brief stay with a second family who could not manage his behavior. He was not quite 2 years old. Pamela Forney saw his photo and request for a foster family and felt an instant connection with him. I am very impressed with Pamela and her dog savvy sense. She kept me in the loop as if he was a foster dog but I knew she hoped he would join her family. (Especially after she changed his name to Obie!) Obie had his challenges, but as I said, Pamela is very wise about dog behavior and she was also working with input from her wonderful trainer. We both had reason to hope that Obie could learn to be a good companion in reasonably controlled circumstances. But this was not to be. Obie bit someone and it was completely unprovoked and inexcusable. We were lucky the victim was a full grown man who was a dog lover but still, we knew what we needed to do. We had to put Obie to sleep, put an end to his emotional turmoil, and do this all through the proper channels so he could be tested for rabies. Pamela was so very strong, and she was able to be there for her beloved boy to the end. I asked Pamela for permission to tell Oreo/Obie s story; here are her words to me: It is hard for me to remember a passing that was as hard as Obie. Even though it was just a few short weeks we are still amazingly in love with him yesterday Gypsy went out and laid in "his" spot on the patio..just soaking up his memory. As I watched, my heart broke again and while it may seem surreal I still feel like I catch a glimpse of his tail every once in awhile. If there was anyone I wanted to save it was Obie.he was young & strong, he was infectious with his energy and love, he was my pal following me everywhere and listening to my every word and Gypsy's best friend. And when it was time for Dave to come home he would go and sit by the door so he could make sure he was the FIRST one to greet him. And yet his demons were greater than us all he had a tough life and it amazes me that right up until his last moment he still found the ability to love, a very good lesson for us all And while a part of me feels like I failed him there is a larger part of me that knows we saved him..we saved him from an ugly ending where he was not able to know that he was loved and a "good" dog so to tell the story?..maybe..you know best. All I ask that if you decide to tell it tell how amazing he was and that even in the end he was a true Newf giving back to his human with the ultimate sacrifice. And although this did not have a happy ending and certainly not the one any of us wanted isn't this what Newfie Rescue is all about - giving them a better place? 31

I have no regrets even though it is painful & sad. I have forever memories and a purple paw reminder that means more than diamonds! Thank you more than words can express. Pamela and I are very grateful to the doctors and staff of Arbor Animal Hospital, especially office manager Becky for coordinating with Animal Control and giving Obie a kind and peaceful send-off, and Maddie and Jennifer for helping me make the purple clay pawprint that Pamela treasures. Oreo on the right with Gypsy and Pamela 32

MAVERICK Available We are still looking for Maverick s forever home. He is a sweet 2 year old boy with lots of energy. He is very people oriented and likes both men and women. He might do best in a home with a female dog for company. He is sound and healthy according to our vet. He will need continued training to bring out his full potential and keep him mentally stimulated. He is currently being fostered by the Marlow Family. Russ and his family have done wonders with his training, and his coat looks lustrous. He's gained six pounds since coming into Rescue, and he is so much more relaxed and interactive. 33

COLE Permanent Foster Cole is now 10+ years old and hanging in there. He developed a hematoma in one ear flap which required surgery. The surgery required several follow up visits, so foster dad Woody Smith made several trips to Irvine. On one trip, Cole, Woody, the Smitha family and I met for lunch alfresco and Cole enjoyed himself immensely. The people had a good time, too! Cole out to lunch with Joseph Smitha 34

MOOSE Rainbow Bridge Moose was probably the oldest dog to come into Rescue at 11 years old. He was lucky enough to find his home with Kim and Ron Gee, two of the nicest people ever. Moose had a wonderful life and particularly enjoyed his daily swims. His 80 year old former owner checked in on him regularly, and one time Kim and Laurie were even able to take Moose to LA to reunite with former owner Helene for the day. Early this Fall, Moose started to decline and the Gees made the compassionate decision to let him go. Moose had 3 owners in his lifetime, but he was so lucky that each one loved him dearly. He was always a happy guy. We send our condolences and our thanks to Kim and Ron. 35

We discussed possibly selling our trailer and getting a bigger one, storing at Denise's or using a storage facility. Marion Howie will check out some places and get prices. 37
