Shannon Gasowski and Celia Gebhart did a great job researching many restaurants and inding this location. Our private banquet room had three walls of glass with a large terrace perfect for enjoying the unseasonably warm weather and gorgeous sunset. Shannon decorated the room with a black and white theme and Sharyn Jeter adorned the tables with beautiful bouquets of baby red roses. We welcomed several irst time banquet attendees, and everyone in attendance seemed to have a great evening. It s always fun to see everyone gussied up in Story and pictures con nue on page 4 Rescues Rule! Rescue Report page 14
2 Page 2 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT... It s hard to believe that three months of 2015 are behind us already, and we re already gearing up for water training season! I hope that this issue inds you well and enjoying the warm sunshine and later hours of daylight with your furry friends. Your NCSC is headed toward a very busy spring and summer full of club events. This issue is brimming with information about the upcoming Pet Expo and Special Olympics, as well as a reprise of Camp Newfy. We will have two educational events that are sure to appeal to many of you: Judi Adler will be teaching a land based training workshop in May, and we will hold an introductory water training seminar culminating in a Tadpole Test. Be sure to enjoy breakfast with your veteran Newfoundland over seven years of age at our annual Veterans Picnic in early June. We will keep you posted about water training as we learn more. Unless we get a lot more snow, use of Castaic Lake for training does not seem promising. If you have any ideas about potential water training sites (perhaps you have an in at a private lake), please let me know. After ten years serving as our club treasurer, Peter Schran has decided that he needs to step down. Peter has done a great job keeping everything organized for many years and we thank him for his years of service to the NCSC. Board member Kathy Wortham will ill the role of treasurer for the duration of the club year, and we will begin looking for a new treasurer for the club year that we can train. If this is a role that interests you, let me know right away. I would love to see more of our membership involved in club activities. If you have an idea for a new and different activity, the Board would love to hear it! We also welcome your articles, fun stories, etc. in Pawprints, as well as ideas to make the club better than ever. Together we can make the NCSC the best Regional club in the entire nation! 2015 NCSC Club Calendar April April America s Family Pet Expo Orange County Fairgrounds (see page 7) April Camp Newfy (see page 16) May Sunday, May 17th Training with Judi Adler El Dorado Park, Long Beach (see page 13) June Pawprints Sunday, June 7th Veterans Picnic Park Bench Café Huntington Beach Central Park (see page 17) Sunday, June 13th 14th 2015 Special Olympics Summer Games Cal State Long Beach (see page 10) Karrie Cook

4 Page 4 Pawprints NCSC Annual Dinner and Awards Celebrating 2014 Continued from page 1 their non Newf attire, if only for one evening! After our delicious dinner and dessert, Karrie Cook and Celia presented this year s awards. We had a number of Fun Awards presented by attendees acknowledging a funny or endearing event that occurred during the course of the year. This year we acknowledged the following AKC titles: three Championships, two Canine Good Citizens, one Therapy Dog Advanced (a relatively new title), one Beginner Novice, two Companion dogs, and one Companion Dog Excellent. We also acknowledged two NCA Water Dogs, three NCA Water Rescue Dogs, one NCA Draft Dog, and one NCA Team Draft Dog. Special awards were presented to Erin Zimmer for Light s earning her NCA Working Achievement award and Sterling earning his NCA Versatile Newfoundland award. We gave out a number of awards to dog/handler teams that either earned more than one title during the year or earned a working title on a irst attempt. Multiple titles were earned by Erin s Light and Sterling, the Valenzuela s Harley, the Frueh s Abby, and Nina Roben s Misty. We also recognized Laurie Shapiro s Barney for earning his NCA Water Dog title on his irst attempt. DISH (Dogs in Service to Humanity) awards were presented to those teams that helped make a difference in We recognized a number of teams that participated in therapy visits, as well as teams that educated the public at events such as Pet Expo or the Ventura Pooch Parade. We acknowledged NCSC members that adopted Newfs through Rescue in 2014, giving them a second chance at a wonderful life. Two of those families actually adopted two rescues in 2014: Drew and Susan Sones and the Marlow Family. We celebrated FOUR Living Legends (dogs that have exceeded the age of ten), with our oldest recipient nearing 14 ½ years and loved by Butch and Nina Roben. We also took some time to remember ive wonderful dogs that we lost during 2014 and honored their memories with engraved photo frames for their owners. We inished the evening with a wonderful DVD highlighting the year s events and our dogs in pictures put together by Lynn Hirth. A huge number of hours go into compiling the photos, adding the captions, and coordinating the whole thing to music for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to everyone that sent your photos to Lynn for inclusion in this keepsake. If you re interested in receiving a copy of the DVD please contact Celia Gebhart. We d like to thank Joe Reinisch for volunteering his engraving services once again. He willingly gives up many hours engraving each pewter mug that is awarded, and it s always fun visiting him and reminiscing about the early years of the NCSC. We re also grateful to Kelli Austin for her handiwork with this year s DISH Awards. No two are exactly alike and everyone felt honored that received one. This is a not to miss evening of great food, hearty laughs, and time well spent with friends honoring the accomplishments of our beloved Newfoundlands. Plan to join us next year and see what you ve been missing! 10 Page 10 Pawprints Membership Corner: New Members New Member Adrienne Craig lives in the Wasco area and works for the North Kern State Prison as a Property Controller II. What that means is that she keeps track of all the inventory of the institutional assets and issues furniture, chairs, etc. to areas in need. She's been with the State for almost 30 years. Adrienne was introduced to Newfoundlands by her mom who had one, and then her neighbor who also had a few Newfies. Her mother has since passed away and her neighbor has moved back to Finland, but Adrienne has her Nessa. Adrienne and Nessa are currently working on Rally Obedience, and she's very interested in seeing how Nessa would do with Carting and Water Rescue training. Right now, there isn't anyone training for draft or water work in her area, but she really wants to see how Nessa will take to water. In her spare time, Adrienne loves to read mysteries, to travel to the Central Coast and to spend time with her two brothers, sisters-in-law and two nieces. She also is helping her brothers care for her dad, who needs assistance since he no longer drives. She is a member of the Bakersfield Obedience Training Club and the Newfoundland Club of America. Adrienne has had many Newfies since 1991 and has enjoyed each and every one of them! Hopefully, sometime Adrienne and Nessa will be able to travel south and participate in some of NCSC's activities!! 12 Pawprints, Apr/May 2015 Membership Corner: Braags!!! In Memoriam Page 12 In loving memory VN GCH Careless Whisper des Oursons du Vent, CD,WRD1, DD3, RN, CGC October 27th, 2007 March 5 th, 2015 We said good-bye to you on a perfect spring like day, just as perfect as you were. The sky was beautifully blue, just as beautiful as you were. The wind chimes were playing their music in the cool afternoon breeze, and it reminded us of so many perfect afternoons we spent in the yard playing together, you chasing butterflies and rolling around on the lawn in sheer delight. What we would not give to relive all these wonderful moments with you... sweet, crazy, handsome Hudson. You fought a good long fight against this dark enemy, called Osteosarcoma, but it finally got the better of you. Thank you for hanging on for so long. You showed so much strength and joy of life for 18 months; months that passed by way too quickly, but are filled with the most cherished memories of our time together. Thank you Hudson, for all the joy, love and adventures you brought into our lives. You were truly one of a kind. We will always love you and keep you close to our hearts. And every time one of your butterfly friends crosses my path, I will point up to the sky and tell them to go find you in Newfy heaven where you can continue chasing them through green meadows. We will never forget you, sweet boy! Farewell, loyal friend, until we meet again. Deeply loved and missed by Heidi and Don Forrest, Luke and little Bixby

14 Pawprints, Apr/May 2015 RESCUE REPORT: April/May 2015 Page 14 Karrie Cook and Laurie Shapiro Rescues Rule! Our NCSC annual banquet was a wonderful me for former Rescues! Among those honored were Barney McKinnon for his Canine Good Ci zen tle, Barney Shapiro for a Water Dog tle, Juneau Howie for her Water Rescue Dog 1 tle, Liza Cook for her Water Rescue Dog tle, Maggie Malone Palmer the Living Legend, and Beau Bigelow and Ozzie Gasowski as Dogs in Service to Humanity (DISH award.) Rescue dogs can do great things! We look forward to more of our former rescues coming out to par cipate in Pet Expo and Special Olympics as sterling ambassadors of the breed! Generous dona ons were made to rescue by Gloria Lee and Ann Filsinger. Thanks to our members wonderful response, we also benefi ed from the overflow of dona ons made for Mary Killian s memorial in Newf Tide. All the extra money that was collected was donated to rescue. We wish to thank the McKinnons, the Feists, the Hopkins, the Fruehs, the Bigelows, the Cooks, the Forrests, Sharyn Jeter, Edie Koster, Kathy Mitchell, the Shapiros, the Robens, the Smithas, Ginger Gomez, the Gasowskis, the Zimmers, Debby Rothwell, Jo Ann Stark, the Rosens, John Pearson and Be y McDonnell for their remembrances of Mary. We have another update on Barnaby, the dog formerly known as Thor who was rescued from Las Vegas. You ll likely remember that he fractured his hip just a er being adopted by a lovely family. Here is his report, direct from his new mom Bonnie: It has been almost 3 months since Barnaby s surgery and we wanted to share his progress...he has his first "beauty parlor" experience...not sure he was very impressed but he looked fabulous. We had the wonderful woman blend his fur in with all the surgery areas that were shaved down. Trimmed up his feet and under his chin where all that lovely drool ends up. By the me we picked him up he was exhausted. We took up all the carpet we had put down so he wouldn't slip on the le and what does he do? He goes and slips and now we have the runners back down. I need to work with him about walking SLOW on the le. Working with him on stairs again too. Love him more than ever, and forever grateful for all that have supported Mike, myself and Barnaby through this ordeal. Our love and hear elt thanks to you all. Bonnie adds this in a note to Laurie: Did I tell you about the nightly commentary from Barnaby? Around 7:30 or so he just starts talking up a storm. He will be laying in his bed or on the floor and will just start talking, not really barking, just talking. Too funny! Dona ons to Barnaby s Go Fund Me account are s ll very welcomed. Hip surgery on a giant breed dog here in pricey Southern California is around $10,000! If you d like to help out Barnaby s new family go to h p:// Now let us tell you about the dogs currently in Rescue:
15 Pawprints, Apr/May 2015 Page 15 Berkeley AVAILABLE Berkeley is a 13 month old neutered male Landseer that was an impulse purchase at a Phoenix pet shop. He was passed to a family member when his owners got divorced. Because Berkeley stayed outside and they live in an extremely warm town near Arizona, they contacted SCNRC to find him a new loving home. Berkeley has been well cared for and is a lovely young boy. He is being fostered by Korey and Brenda Green and their two daughters. Their 7 year old Newfoundland Sebas an has lukewarm feelings about the puppy, so we hope to have him placed by the me you read this. Special thanks to Dan Palmer for transpor ng this sweet boy and to Erin Zimmer for helping to acclimate him to his new environment, also to first me fosters the Green family. Dino FOSTER CARE We cannot thank the Sones family enough for all the work they put into taking care of Dino. He is polypharmaceu cally dependent to say the least. He takes lots of medica ons, eye drops, skin lo ons and did we men on all the medicated baths??? Kudos to Susan and Drew for loving and taking care of this sweet old guy with really bad skin. Kudos too to Dr. Mabley and Arbor Animal Hospital for their assistance in improving Dino s quality of life, and for all the meds they donate for his care. Cole FOSTER CARE Cole is another skin dog. Unfortunately we are s ll struggling to find the right balance of special food, medica ons and baths to keep Cole comfortable and handsome. We are lucky to have diligent Woody Smith to look a er Cole for us. Shadow FOSTER CARE At the end of April, li le old Shadow will have been in our care for 3 years!! Pre y amazing for a mini Newf who was found in the animal shelter as a 12 year old. It is unimaginable to most of us that his people would elect to leave him there. All these years he has been loved and cared for by Woody Smith. Talk about bonus years! Thank you Woody!

22 Page 22 Newfoundland Club of Southern California Board Meeting The Newfoundland Club of Southern California Board Meeting took place on January 22nd, 2015 via teleconference. The meeting was called to order at 8:11 p.m. Present at the meeting: Karrie Cook, Celia Gebhart, Peter Schran, Shannon Gasowski, Debby Rothwell, Kathy Wortham, Mark Banda, Gigi Griffith and Melanie Bigelow. STANDING REPORTS: President: Karrie reported that all of the membership directories have been sent out to the general membership. Vice President: Nothing to report. Treasurer: Peter gave the board a written report of the club's financial status. At the time of this meeting, not all of the Regional Specialty numbers have come in to the club. Peter will know more by the end of the month. Gigi reported that Jack Bradshaw is sending a breakdown of all of the expenses and that they will also be sending a check. The current balance is $10,842.00, but this amount will decrease to around $ due to all of the January bills. Corresponding Secretary: Heidi was absent for the meeting, but a report was given. A get well card was sent to Carol Snyder, Gigi Griffith and Oreste Palloni. A condolence card was sent to Carol Mead. Recording Secretary: All of the club reports were sent to Gloria for inclusion in the next issue of Pawprints. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Rescue: Karrie reports that currently we only have permanent fosters in our care. Someone has a 1 1/2 year old Newfoundland who is looking for a home to home transfer. There is a possible Newf/mix at the Baldwin Park shelter. The board needs a full disclosure on Rescue's financial situation, so Karrie will get in touch with Laurie Shapiro and Denise Hatakeyama to expedite a full report of our Rescue status. STANDING REPORT: Corporation: The board needs to keep on top of all important filing dates to keep our current status with the government. From here on out, it will be discussed at every board meeting, so that we do not miss any important dates. Karrie will get all forms, names and numbers from Sharyn Jeter. OLD BUSINESS: Fall Draft Test: Shannon Gasowski reported that the Fall Draft Test went very well. We had a good entry. The freight haul did need to be re-designed the day before due to rain taking out part of the freight haul, but it was easily handled. Fred Frueh's dog, Abby needed some medical attention due to a bee sting, but she was ok and was able to complete the test. Biggest problem was that no one from the Draft Test, with the exception of the judges, filled out their evaluation form.
23 Pawprints, Apr/May 2015 Page 23 Christmas Tree Pull: The Christmas Tree Pull was very successful this year. We had lots of volunteers and dogs that participated. Our insurance costs us $50.00 and we made $ The tree farm has asked us back again for Regional Specialty: Celia Gebhart reported that the trophies cost was $1, which was covered. The raffle did exceedingly well with a profit of $3, After expenses, the regional netted $5, The Regional Specialty committee solicited donations for the raffle and for advertising in the catalog, which resulted in a profit. Our judges expenses were very minimal and we had exhibitors from all over including Alaska and Colorado. Gigi Griffith reported that everyone was talking about how nice our specialty was and that they are looking forward to coming back. The committee did a great job with everyone's concerns about drop-offs, grooming sites, etc. Gigi thinks the regional should stay in Palm Springs. We had great entries and Palm Springs can support us. *Karrie Cook made a motion to hold the 2016 Regional Specialty at Palm Springs along with the Mesquite Club. Gigi Griffith seconded the motion. The motion passed. It was also mentioned that we need to start no later than February 2nd, for next years specialty. We will be deciding on who will be on the committee, as well as who will chair the committee. The deadline for critical items is 7months before the show. Ring stewards need to be booked now, as well as ad campaigns, raffle items, judges, etc. One final issue to be discussed was our judge Oreste Paloni. He and his wife flew here from Italy at their own cost and because of a serious medical situation, he was unable to judge. Karrie Cook felt that the board should do something in terms of a donation to his medical costs would be justified. We agreed that a donation of $ would be given, but it would come out of the net profit of the Regional Specialty raffle. Kathy Wortham made a motion to donate $ to The Paloni family and Karrie Cook seconded the motion. The motion passed. *At 8:50, the board went into executive session. At 9:02, Shannon Gasowski made a motion to come out of executive session and Mark Banda seconded that motion. As far as the Regional Specialty committee is concerned, we need to have a written draft as to how people get rotated onto the committees. On February 2nd, 2015, Celia, Debby, Gigi, Sharyn, and Kathy will discuss and make a written draft to present to the board at a later date. Introduction to Draft Seminar: The draft seminar took place on January 10th, There were 7 dogs and 5 people in attendance. It was exciting to see brand new members coming out to cart with their dogs. Karrie and Laurie feel that this is something that the club should do every year. NEW BUSINESS: Walk on the Beach: Melanie Bigelow has made a flyer to be included in the next issue of Pawprints. Since we will be having draft practice on the same day, the idea is to include everyone and have Walk on the Beach in the morning and invite everyone to go to Huntington Central Park for draft practice. Draft Practice: All of the draft practice locations and dates were set up at the annual Working Dog Meeting. There is an list that will be sent out weekly to those who are interested in training that will provide times and locations.
24 Page 24 Annual Dinner: The information will be in Pawprints regarding the date and location. This years dinner will be held at the Coco Palms Restaurant in Pomona. The slide show is being put together by Lynn Hirth, Karrie Cook and Mark Banda. Spring Draft Test 2015: The premium has been sent out. Heidi is asking for help with set up, take down, stewarding, etc. The judges gifts are done and there is a $ charge for judge Cheryl Dondino's plane ticket. The permit is secure and we will be having a pot luck for lunch. It's also important to remember that there is no Styrofoam allowed in the park. Fun Event: We had a fun event scheduled for 3/29/2015, but we are scrapping that for now. The club already has too much scheduled. There is a possibility that we may do a "Lazy Dog" evening at the Lazy Dog restaurant in the evening. Possibly on a weeknight. This will be determined at a later date. Pet Expo: Debby Rothwell is chairing this event and at present, we have no information regarding the event. Debby will keep us up to date on the event. Camp Newfy: Camp Newfy will be taking place at Pirate's Cove in Needles, California on 4/23/15-4/26/15. Celia Gebhart reports that there are six spots that are booked so far. Veterans Picnic June 7th, 2015: Marilyn Maltby will be chairing this event, but we don't have any other information at this point. Special Olympics: Laurie Shapiro, Barbara Hopkins and Cathy Smitha are chairing this event. No other information at this time. Tadpole Test June 21st, 2015: Karrie Cook and Shannon Gasowski are chairing this event. The Tadpole test will be held down at Fiesta Island in San Diego. Water Seminar on Land: Debby Rothwell is working on having a land only seminar for Water Work with Judi Adler teaching. This will possibly be in June. Due to Judi's time constraints, we may need to move the Tadpole Test to a different date. Debby will let us know when she hears back from Judi. Fundraising: This has been tabled until the next board meeting. But, we will be discussing new teeshirts. Possibly new designs and what companies we can work with to help get them made. Kathy Wortham made a motion to close the meeting. Mark Banda seconded that motion. The motion passed. The meeting was closed at 9:38 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Shannon Gasowski, Recording Secretary
