2 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT NCSC Members, Spring is here and we are just finishing up spring draft training with the season culminating in our draft test at Irvine Regional Park on April 2nd. A number of our club members were lucky enough to travel up to Gleneden Beach on the Oregon Coast for the Newfoundland Club of America (NCA) National Specialty. Our club was well represented and Laurie Shapiro had a booth of rescue wear to benefit SCNRC. I m sure we ll be provided with updates from those that attended in our next issue of Pawprints. One of our biggest club events, Special Olympics, is approaching quickly, so please contact the chairs of this event, Laurie Shapiro and Cathy Smitha, if you d like to help. The success of this event depends on many volunteers and friendly Newfoundlands. We received our permit from Castaic Lake and will begin water training there in May. Details are also being worked out with Cabrillo for some Saturday training dates. As soon as the details are ironed out, a club will go out to everyone. Enjoy this beautiful spring weather with your Newfoundlands. Please come and join us at a club event soon. Newfondly, -Karrie Cook Judges Cherrie Brown and Gaby Cohen with DD requalifiers Kathy Mitchell and Crew, DDX requalifiers Randy Robinson and Jeter, and new DD qualifier Karrie Cook and Epic. 2

7 NCSC Annual Dinner by Debby Rothwell We had a grand time at our Annual Dinner and Awards presentation on March 11, 2017 at Marlarkey s Irish Bar and Grill in Long Beach. Marlarkey s has a great, private banquet room with a bay side view. Those who came early enough got to enjoy a glass of wine and a beautiful sunset. Guests were provided with a handmade party favor, a flour sack dish towel with a heat transfer picture of their Newf(s). We also played a game of Newy Bingo. Each guest sent in a tidbit about themselves, and that tidbit was printed on a sheet of stickers. Each party goer had to roam the room and collect stickers from each other. When the cards were full, it was time to call out the factoids in a random order until we heard, BINGO!. Several people got to take home a prize. After dinner and games it was time to give out awards (see attached copy of the program). Our MC team consisted of Karrie Cook and Celia Gebhart, always lovely in their presentation of the awards and recognitions. Aside from our conformation, working, rescue and memoriam awards, sometimes club members choose to bestow fun awards for each other. Marian Howie and Emily Floyd must have made several trips to Michaels craft store this year. They presented Charlie Zimmer (age 2ish) a fun award for being the perfect beach companion, always having extra snacks for dogs and never complaining. His mom, Erin Zimmer also got a fun award for saving the drifting club boat, by swimming after it and jumping in. Not an easy task. Heidi Forrest also put in some detailed effort in presenting Celia and Dennis Gebhart a fun award for going to the wrong location for a dog show. While they went one way, to the wrong location, their dog and handler went to the correct site for the dog show, oopsie! Celia presented Karrie Cook with an award, a product that cleans up urine. It seems some dog marked Karrie s brand new soft crate. Marking males can be a hazard of our sport, leading us to hear the familiar wail, Hey, don t pee on that! A picture is worth a thousand words, so please enjoy the accompanying pictures of some of our titlists and dinner companions. Hope to see you next year, in March 2018, location to be determined. 7

15 2017 WALK ON THE BEACH After weeks of leaden skies and rainstorms, the sun broke through just in time for our annual Walk on the Beach held on January 29th at Huntington Beach Dog Beach. The skies were glorious and the temperatures comfortable although the surf was big but that didn t stop our club members and friends from hitting the sand. This year, we had an amazing turn out with 23 Newfoundlands, a Lab and a Collie storming the beach. It was an impressive sight! Newfs young and old and people near and far came out for the day to play and visit. Instagram stars, Ralphie and Boss Fisher came down to the beach as did travelers from Hayden, Idaho, with Tugboat who happened to see our post on Facebook. The McKinnon s came all the way down from Acton with their three, Katie, Barney and newly-adopted foster Louie, while Mary Yui & Jeff Longmate drove out from Pasadena with their Gilly. Our oldest Newf with paws in the sand was Pamela Forney s girl, Gypsy, at 11 years old. The youngest was Erin Zimmer s little gal, Meredith, at only 4.5 months and was a big hit with people and dogs alike. All the dogs left with swag yummy liver treats - provided by our friends at Just Food For Dogs. ( Afterwards, those that wanted met up at the very dogfriendly Park Bench Café to have some lunch and enjoy each other s company awhile longer. It was a good dogs-day out. 15

18 Logan 25 months old boy Logan (CH Piternyuf Boeing, CGCA,WD) took Select Dog for a 3pt. major at the Supported Entry at Silverbay Kennel Club show defeating some really nice Specials. The next day, Breeder judge Debby Thornton gave him the Select Ribbon as well. Both days, Logan was handled by his mommy Heidi. I think this boy may have a bright show career ahead of him? A great show dog that also loves to work, that is what our breed is all about. Owned and loved by Heidi and Don Forrest 18

21 PAWPRINTS April - May 2017 RESCUE REPORT The Calm Before the Storm? You may think Rescue has had a bit of a breather since there are few dogs in our report. Au contraire! While it s true we haven t taken in many new dogs, we are still busy. Every day there are people who need counseling on how to make it work so they can keep their dogs, how to come to the realization that it is best for the dog if it is given up, shelters to contact about possible Newfy sightings, Facebook, Craigslist, and it goes on and on. Rescue work party in preparation for the National Specialty fundraiser. 40

22 PAWPRINTS April - May 2017 Taking care of these big dogs is expensive as you surely know. For the first time ever, the Newfoundland Club of Southern California is joining forces with the Newfoundland Club of Northern California and we will have a co-op booth selling both clubs logo apparel at the NCA National Specialty in Oregon!!! Months have gone into the planning, ordering, pricing and preparing for the sale of hundreds of new items. If you are headed to the Specialty be sure to spend some time in our booth, June Gibson and I will get you all decked out in the latest in Newfy fashion! Your own personal shoppers at no additional charge. It s easier to spend your hard earned money for a good cause! Rescued Newfs adopted by our club members were highlighted at the Awards Dinner in March. Lucky Newfs and their families are Bella: adopted by the Sones family, Bridgette: adopted by the Stoner family, Dandi: adopted by the Galvan family, Kuma: adopted by Grant Nakano, Luna: adopted by the Wood family, Odin: adopted by Melissa Oechsel and Shamu: adopted by Pamela Piller. Big thanks to hard working event chair Debby Rothwell for a beautiful party, and also to our returning MC s Celia Gebhart and Karrie Cook. Heidi Forrest and Peter Schran sorting and pricing items. Thank you, Kathy, for your thoughtfulness. I wish there was less cause for Kathy Mitchell to make memorial donations to Newf Rescue. In recent months she has sent generous donations in memory of Irish Setter Brinkley Raschella, and Indy Parker her late Brody s brother. Thank you, Kathy, for your thoughtfulness. 41

23 PAWPRINTS April - May 2017 MOUNTAIN - New to Rescue Mountain was relinquished to Rescue when his owner realized that due to his travel schedule he was unable to provide rehab from the knee surgery his dog needs. I expected that if a 2 year old dog had a bad knee for 8 months it must not be very bad and he must be getting around OK. Melanie Bigelow accompanied me to the intake and we were both shocked when Mountain got out of the car and hobbled through the parking lot, nearly 3-legged lame! Mountain Man came home to meet the Shapnoofs and less than 24 hours later was getting evaluated by a boarded surgeon. There was no doubt that surgery was in his future and this was quickly confirmed by the orthopedist. His surgery will have an 8 week recovery period, so you will be reading about Mountain again. COLE Update After several years of Cole in rescue s care with foster dad Woody Smith, we have found an excellent solution for supplying him with food right to the doorstep! Chewy.com offers Cole s food at a price below retail (and some wholesale) plus delivers it for free. Then there s the added benefit of regularly scheduled delivery so Woody will not have to run into town when Cole s cupboard is bare. Chewy.com has been very generous to our club with raffle donations, etc. over the years. Check them out if you would like your dogs food to magically appear at your front door! 42
