A Message from the President Happy Newf Year! I hope you and your Newfs are enjoying the cooler temperatures and rain we ve had lately. The much-needed snow in the mountains is a good sign that there will be water in Castaic Lake this summer for water training! Speaking of snow covered mountains, the Back- To-Back Regional Specialties and supported entries were held January 7-10, 2016 at the Empire Polo Grounds under the backdrop of the snow-capped San Jacinto Mountains. The scenery was breathtaking, the dogs impeccable, and the shows a great success! I d like to thank the Show Committee comprised of Kathy Wortham, Gigi Griffith, Celia Gebhart, Heidi Forrest, and Sharyn Jeter. These ladies worked tirelessly to put on a world-class show with countless hours spent months and months before the actual shows to ensure their success. In addition to the members of the Show Committee, we were fortunate to have some other key volunteers that helped to make the shows a success: Melanie Bigelow, Ray Shapland, Lynn Hirth, Fred and Jean Frueh, Dan and Pat Palmer, Sara Paxton, Laurie Shapiro, Pam Austin, Erin Zimmer, and Annette Gutierrez. Stay tuned for all of the details in a supplemental issue of Pawprints. If you ve never been to a Regional Specialty, I highly recommend coming out next year. If you d like to get involved in helping next year, please let a member of this year s Show Committee or me know. It takes many hands to put on an event of this caliber, and everyone is welcome. The Board met in December to plan most of our activities for Please see page 26 for an outline of the planned events. We have another busy year planned and hope to get more members involved in club events throughout the year. Working dog enthusiasts met in January to begin planning our working events and practices for the year. Please see page 28 for the minutes of the meeting. Directories for the club year were mailed out in December; if you didn t receive your copy, please let me know. Currently, roughly 25% of our members, denoted by an asterisk (*) in the directory, are also members of our national organization, the Newfoundland Club of America (NCA). The NCA s goals include preserving, protecting and providing for the welfare of the Newfoundland breed. It provides educational programs for members, breeders, and judges, maintains a great website publishes a quarterly magazine entitled Newf Tide, engages in rescue, promotes research and health studies, and conducts other activities to promote and protect our beloved breed. If you haven t already done so, spend some time perusing their website and consider becoming a member. The link to their membership application packet is members/pdfs/ncamempacketrev12.14.pdf I hope to see you at an upcoming draft training session, the annual dinner on March 12 th, or our draft test on April 16th and 17 th. Details of all of these events can be found in the pages that follow. It s going to be another fun-packed, eventpacked year! Newfondly, -Karrie Cook 2

Membership Corner: New Members Doug & Lindi Gregory Doug and Lindi Gregory have been married for 52 years. They have had some form of a dog or two for their two children, whom have gone on to have dogs and animals of their own. Their first dog together was a rescued Saint Bernard from a shelter in South Gate. When he passed, they got another Saint Bernard from the Saint Bernard Chalet in Pasadena and an Old English Sheepdog from a friend who couldn't keep him any longer. After they passed, the Gregory's moved to Colorado and got another dog from the shelter. Magic, who was a cockapoo, was very smart and when he passed they took in another Saint Bernard from a neighbor. Once he had passed on, they were without a dog for about a year and missed the affection from their four legged friends. That's when they got their first Newfoundland. Mickie only lived for a little more than a year and passed from a rare form of cancer. Next came Mandie, who came out of a breeder in Sylmar. Mandie was with Doug and Lindi for over 12 years and was a great dog and companion. She is missed greatly! Their girl, Bella is who they share their life with now. She was rescued with the help of their old breeder, Christine, who put them in touch with our rescue. They knew Bella was theirs the moment that they saw her and Bella felt the same way about them! She's very sweet, has the cutest nose and loves everyone that she meets. Doug has been retired for 12 years from the food industry (Albertsons), and Lindi is still employed and works for a real estate investment company in Newport Beach. Lindi has been there for the past 18+ years and will be retiring in 2017, when their youngest granddaughter graduates from high school. They have two daughters, both married, and three granddaughters. One just graduated from Cal State Long Beach, one is still there and the youngest is a junior at Fountain Valley High School. The family all lives close to each other and enjoy beach parties, camping trips, Sunday family dinners, shopping with the girls and school activities. The Gregory's look forward to joining the club and enjoying more outdoor activities. Contact information: 2912 Andros Street // Costa Mesa, CA // // lindidoug@aol.com Michelle Galvan Michelle Galvan, along with her three children, Scott (26), Britt (23), and Steven (20), are currently adopting a beautiful 5 year old Newfoundland named Dandi. Everyone feels like she is the perfect fit and has been a member of their family forever! They are looking forward to learning about carting and water training with Dandi. They're also interested in watching the upcoming dog shows, as this is a new experience for them. The Galvan's biggest hobby has been their participation in horsemanship. They have shown and trained quarter horses in Southern California for the past 13 years. While they no longer have horses in their backyard, they have always been active in the community. Michelle has been a 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader, football booster member and past PTA President and Vice President of Ways and Means. 4

All of her kids have learned to ride horses and were involved in helping raise Labrador puppies for 15 years when they first moved to Orange County. They lost their last lab in March of Michelle has always wanted a Newfoundland dog and she feels so blessed to have found such a good one! She also looks forward to meeting all of the club members in the future. He's soon to be 6 months old and already a whopping 71.8 pounds! practice in Simi Valley. Traci works as a licensed marriage and family therapist and she specializes in Play Therapy with children. Traci has seen the power of using a dog in therapy and wanted to incorporate a dog into her private She and her husband, Matthew, did a great deal of research on different breeds and their general personalities. They came across the Newfoundland breed and not only fell in love with their darling faces, but learned how great they are with children. Their puppy, Bentley, is a natural and very loving. He has been the perfect "co-therapist." Bentley loves playing with both children and other dogs. His favorite game is "tug of war" and loves to cuddle with his "babies." 7 3rd Annual NCSC Christmas Tree Pull by Karrie Cook Another successful Christmas Tree Pull was held at Richfield Pines on December 6, Although there was a fundraising event going on for a pet therapy group at the same location, we had a fairly constant stream of visitors, and our dogs had the opportunity to haul more trees than last year. Trees were hauled by Abbey Floyd, Quint Gebhart, Liza Cook, and Barney McKinnon. Apple Paopuka was instrumental in reeling in a steady stream of customers so our dogs kept busy most of the day. Ray Shapland served as our morning Santa with his little reindeer, I mean adorable Newfoundland puppy Kodiak, in tow. Robert Campbell took on Santa duties with his sidekick Mollie for part of the afternoon. We had a total of four EZ Ups lined up that day: one for our Santa booth, one with some club information and holiday treats, and two for our dogs and their crates. Everyone pitched in with various decorations for our Santa booth, and the whole event came together very nicely. Although Mark Banda and Bucyk couldn t attend this year (something about driving across the country to visit family for the THOSE IN ATTENDANCE WERE: Robert and Dianne Campbell with Mollie; Karrie Cook with Liza; Helen Do with Baloo; Emily Floyd with Abbey; Fred and Jean Frueh; Michelle Galvan with Dandi; Celia Gebhart with Quint; Lynn Hirth with Imp; Marian Howie with Charlie; James and Leslie Kell with Leia; Rick and Eileen Mathews with Brewster; Ed and Virginia McKinnon with Katie and Barney; Debra and Tom Mohr with Humphrey 7

holidays!), he contacted the media about our event, and it was publicized in several local papers. Fred and Jean Frueh came out in the morning to help decorate the booth with their awesome homemade signs that really added a nice touch. We had a total of 23 people and 15 Newfoundlands throughout the day that made this event possible. A number of members were first time attendees, and everyone seemed to have a great time. The owners and staff at Richfield Pines are ready to have us back again next year, so plan to come out and join us. You won t be disappointed, and it s a great way to get in the holiday spirit! 8

NCSC Fall Draft Test by Kathy Wortham, Draft Test Chair The NCSC fall draft test was held at the beautiful Irvine Regional Park. I personally love this park as it is large, has varying landscapes and areas of interest, and it allows you to completely forget you are in the middle of busy Orange County. This park offers an unending supply of naturally occurring distractions for our test, including stunning peacocks which stroll freely throughout the park, a train, biking, lakes with various activities, and a lot of very noisy people! The fall is an exceptionally lovely time to visit this park with its focus on the holiday season. Unfortunately, our test was before the official start of the holiday festivities so we missed the Christmas train and the other holiday attractions they offer. I would highly recommend visiting this park during the holidays if your holiday spirit is in need of a boost! I am happy to say that despite the lack of holiday focus, our club showed up in full force even despite our surprisingly low entry! Melanie Bigelow was 10

our Chief Steward and Laurie Shapiro stepped up to be her right hand. They went to the park a few days prior to the event to map out a great course using all the naturally occurring elements. Their diligence resulted in a great course with minimal man-made objects. They mapped out the course for the judges on the afternoon before the test staying well after dark to make sure that everything was perfect and met the judges expectations. Great job and kudos to Melanie and Laurie! The day of the test Melanie and Laurie showed up before dawn to make sure we had our favorite spot in the back of the park complete with ample shade, a large area, and close to the ever important restrooms! But once dawn broke, the day proved to be beautiful and, as is typical in So Cal, WARM! 11

This was my first time chairing an event for the club, and I could not have been luckier with the committee and all of the volunteers! Heidi Forrest was invaluable in making sure everything was done and was so very helpful! She handled so many aspects of making sure the draft test was successful,l including (but not limited to!) judges gifts, exhibitor gifts, breakfast AND organizing the lunch hospitality! Celia organized another successful raffle to help raise funds which is ever so popular and great fun! Our secretary was Shannon Gasowski who did a great job keeping everything organized and had three great helpers with Karrie Cook, Erin Zimmer and Dan Palmer. As always, our club members ROCK volunteering! Debbie Rothwell and Peter Schran came out to help set up everything along with Fred and Jean Frueh, and Ray Shapland. Pam Austin, Virginia McKinnon, Deborah Schuch, and Mary Yui all volunteered and came out to help make the draft test a success. Debbie and Peter also graciously served as host/hostess to one of our judges, Rick Humphreys, including airport transportation, transportation around town and 12

a place to stay! Lynn Hirth was our photographer extraordinaire and you can find all of the draft test pictures at Some of Lynn s incredible photos are featured as a part of this article! We had an exceptional judges slate which offered the exhibitors, volunteers and our spectators an incredible experience in a positive, supportive and friendly manner. They were all so focused on making sure everyone understood the rules, their decisions and that everything was done in the kindest possible way. I am proud to say our judges were all members of our own club; Rick Humphreys, Kathy Mitchell and observer judge Erin Zimmer. Although we had a small entry, our judges worked tirelessly Saturday evening to make certain that the test site was well thought out and a fair course for each exhibitor. Our three entrants were Karrie Cook with Epic, Celia Gebhart with Quint, and Ed McKinnon with Barney. All of our exhibitors were well prepared and demonstrated that they had trained hard to prepare for the test. And, some came oh so close to qualifying. Unfortunately, none of them successfully completed all aspects of the test and therefore, did not qualify for the DD title. However, more importantly, they were all successful in exhibiting amazing sportsmanship and enjoyed the day and the experience. I think the dogs did, too! The day would not have been complete without a little impromptu birthday party for Charles Jr who turned 1 year old! How time flies! Laurie Shapiro came prepared with a birthday cake that he could dig right into! This embodied the best part of our club, the camaraderie and friendships that occur naturally. It is always a great day spending it with my NCSC family AND a huge thanks to EVERYONE that helped make our Fall Draft test successful (which ultimately meant making sure I didn't mess anything up!). Thank you ALL! Judges: 13

Rescue Report Feb March 2016 SWEETHEARTS OF RESCUE by Laurie Shapiro Rescue is so lucky to have a lot of sweethearts. I m sorry that I frequently start off these reports talking about money, but the fact is it takes a lot of money to get these pups healthy and ready for adoption. In 2015 our expenses were just over $35, Near the end of the year we were graced with many financial gifts: Kathy Mitchell made a donation in honor of Kyle, a dog loved by Catherine and John Zinsky. End of year donations were received from Anna & Sam Couch, Pamela Forney, Roberta Bracamonte, Marilyn Maltby, Linda and Ben Henry, Frank and Deanne Pedroni, Pamela Piller, Carol and Dennis Snyder and Carol s employer Dretloh Aircraft Supply. (Thanks Carol!) Then another donation from Kathy Mitchell, this time in memory of Dennis and Celia Gebhart s Annie and Ed and Betty Wiesmeier s Sunshine. Kroger sent their quarterly check thanks to our club members who shop at Ralphs. Kathleen Trudell and Philip Pincus have their bank send an auto-payment every two weeks and we are thankful that this is continuing in 2016! Rescue received its biggest donation ever from the estate of Gail Bennett-Kinney. Gail was a friend and neighbor of Sharyn Jeter, and she frequently accompanied Sharyn, Pandi and RJ to dog shows and NCSC events. When Gail moved to Oregon Sharyn kept her updated on our Newfy antics by giving her a subscription to Pawprints. We were saddened to hear she has passed away, but shocked and thrilled to learn she made Newfy Rescue a beneficiary of her estate! Your rescue volunteers at work: Aussie breed rescue contacted us about a Newf in an area shelter with great medical needs. He had been hit by a car and suffered a broken leg that needed treatment; possibly even amputation. He was to be available for adoption the next day New Year s Eve! Within 45 minutes our volunteers holiday plans had been rescheduled, medical boarding was located and reserved at 2 facilities (depending on the time of arrival on the holiday) and a tentative vet visit scheduled. **PLEASE make sure your dogs wear ID tags at all times, and make sure there is a cell phone number on there in case you are not home when a crisis occurs.** Happily, the owner got in contact with the shelter a few hours after our plans were in place and they DEFINITELY wanted their boy back. We let 15

you know this as a reminder that we have nearly as many aborted missions in rescue as we do actual relinquishments. Sometimes people are counseled by our volunteers for months before they make their decision. This takes a lot of time, energy and dedication from volunteers, and it never shows up in this report. It s another component of our program, and it is an important (though frustrating) one. Newfs have begun showing up in pet shops again, unfortunately. It is a given that ALL puppies are adorable, and especially Newfy puppies. But do you think the kid behind the cash register has any concerns about whether that puppy is going to a good home? One that understands a giant breed dog? Of course not! As long as pet shops and puppy mills are legal this is going to happen. The only way to counteract this is education. Here s what we do when the rescue committee becomes aware of a Newfoundland in a pet shop. We are NICE to the staff and manager, first and foremost. (Maybe steaming on the inside, but nice on the outside.) We explain that large breed dogs have different needs than many puppies, and we ASK the management if they will give an information packet to the puppy s buyer. This is why we have to be nice so maybe they will forward the information. The packet contains breed specific literature and also information about the NCSC and NCA, offering our support and guidance to the buyer. In the past, it is this literature that has let the buyer know where to turn when they are ready to get rid of their impulse purchase dog. We do not buy pet shop dogs to save them. That only encourages the pet shop to order up another one and the misery that is life in a puppy mill continues. Please let the rescue committee know if you are willing to deliver this literature to a pet shop if necessary. It is a great service to Rescue, and something not everyone can handle emotionally. And now for the update on the dogs! Kona ADOPTED Kona is a such a sweet girl and has found her forever home! Her original family abandoned her to the animal shelter in August. She is about 5 years old, spayed and healthy but with a mild skin condition. She needs bathing a little more frequently than the norm, but generic dandruff shampoo does the trick for her so no expensive prescription suds are required. Special thanks to Shirley Brown for fostering and loving Kona until the perfect forever home was found for her. She has been adopted by the Newfy-loving family who donated a beautiful carriage/dog cart for a rescue raffle. Special thanks to Courtney Wilson for putting them in contact with Karrie. She gets along well with the other 2 Newfy ladies and the 2 Springer Spaniels at her foster home with Shirley Brown. At press time she is awaiting a visit from prospective adopters from Visalia. They are the Newfyloving family who donated a beautiful carriage/dog cart for a Rescue raffle. 16

Leif/Finn ADOPTED Leif was only 7 months old when his first family realized they had made a mistake in adding a puppy to the household. Mark Banda was kind enough to help with communications and transportation of little Leif to his foster home. Melissa Oechsel did a great job caring for Finn but realized a puppy was not the right fit for her household at this time. Brian Neeley had come out to the draft test in November to introduce himself around, meet the rescue committee, and get some quality time with Newfy drool and shedding. He had recently lost his beloved Newf Maggie Mae and the family was looking to adopt a rescue. A match was made and they had a new furry companion in time for Christmas. Leif is now Finn and he lives in Orange County, so we hope to see him soon at some of our fun events. Congratulations Neeley family! Dandi ADOPTED Dandi has found her forever home with new club member Michelle Galvan. She is fitting in well with her new family, and Michelle is interested in becoming active in the club. Perhaps you met her at the Christmas Tree Pull in December? Congratulations Dandi, and welcome Michelle and family. 17

Luna ADOPTION PENDING Luna continues recovering from knee surgery, the latest one taking place on Boy, is it ever hard to keep an 18 month old Newfoundland quiet and inactive so she can heal properly! Our hands are really full at the Shapiro house everyone with 4 legs wants to play with Luna and that is strictly forbidden! But Miss Luna has admirers! Her potential adoptive family has come to visit her twice so far and they are excited for the day to come when she s released by the surgeon and can to move to her new forever home. Bridgette ADOPTION PENDING Bridgette is pretty well into the healing process from her knee surgery (a different injury that Luna s). When the shelter found her, she was only using 3 of her legs and unfortunately that habit continues. There s no telling how long she had been like this, the habit is very ingrained. The surgeon recommended physical therapy to try to get the most out of her surgical repair. Of course there is physical therapy for pets!! Foster parents Becky and Bob Stoner will take her to appointments and do exercises with her at home to try to improve her range of motion, strength and mobility. 18

Shamu ADOPTION PENDING Shamu continues to improve each day due to the love and care of Pamela Piller. He has become comfortable in her household and his true personality is shining through. At a recent veterinarian visit he absolutely demanded the attention of people waiting in the lobby. Kisses for all! Shamu is one of our most successful transformations of a skin dog. Just look at the before and after pictures! Pamela follows Dr. Mabley s instructions to the letter, adding in a bit of home remedy to boot. It is really paying off for Shamu. Before you know it Pamela will be growing fur on a rock. BEFORE: AFTER: 19

Cole Cole enjoyed a holiday outing! He had a long ride in foster Dad Woody s new vehicle, ending up at the veterinarian in Irvine. We were all happy to learn that at 10+ years old he is still healthy and strong. His bloodwork results showed it was safe for him to stay on the expensive medication he needs to keep his skin disease in check. After the checkup he got to go to a café with his driver Woody, Karrie and Laurie where the humans enjoyed a warm drink and Cole basked in the admiration of many passers-by. He was a gentleman and a great ambassador of the breed throughout the morning. Hi Karrie, MAWGAN UPDATE: It's been quite a while since we talked but since we couldn't find an address for a donation, I thought I would send a note. We are doing well, Mawgan is a happy camper and is a happy girl. We would like to make a donation to rescue since they helped us and can help so many more. Where do we send some money or is there an online donation location? Frank and Deanne Pedroni Donations are gratefully accepted any time! We are working to get a Paypal button on Rescue s page of the NCSC website. Until then, you can make a donation via Paypal to laurieshapiro@sbcglobal.net (yes, it really goes to Rescue not Laurie) or mail checks payable to: SCNRC P.O. Box 2501 Huntington Beach, CA

PAWPRINTS Remembering Bear FEBRUARY - MARCH 2016 ( ) Our big beautiful baby Bear passed away in middecember. We first met Bear in May He was Karrie Cook s first placement when she started with Newfoundland Rescue. (Whenever we have talked about him since then, she would always remark, I just love that dog! ) When we decided to adopt him and went to meet him in Manhattan Beach, each of us instantly fell in love with him. Bear really turned our house into a home. We had moved to Agoura Hills from New Jersey in late 2006 and were still adjusting to life in Southern California. We loved having a big dog in the house again. Whenever we were out and about with him, neighbors and friends would respond with delight over his size and gentle personality. Bear earned his Canine Good Citizenship in the summer in (Miraculously, he ignored the scrumptious piece of cheese.) Throughout the years, we learned he had the instincts and enjoyed aquatic play. Also, we think he genuinely enjoyed posing with athletes and fans at NCSC Special Olympics. Most of all, Bear loved being home, living up to his reputation as a champion napper, always conveniently waking up in time to be present during meal preparations It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are. (Anonymous) Bear has certainly gifted our family with a piece of his heart, and he has taken a piece of ours with him. We miss him very much. - Hank, Gloria, Victoria and Peter Gifford 22

NCSC BOARD MEETING The Newfoundland Club of Southern California Board Meeting took place on November 17th, 2015 via teleconference. The meeting was called to order at 8:06 p.m. Present at the meeting: Shannon Gasowski, Karrie Cook, Melanie Bigelow, Debby Rothwell, Kathy Wortham, Mark Banda, Erin Zimmer, Celia Gebhart and Gigi Griffith. STANDING REPORTS: President: Karrie reported that 26 members have not renewed their membership yet. Karrie and several others will make personal phone calls to these members to see if they wish to remain active in the club. Vice President: Nothing to report. Treasurer: Kathy sent via , a full report to the board regarding our finances. At present, we have $12,000 in the bank. Kathy is updated her system so that everything will auto-calculate. Kathy also says that she needs the bank card charges by the end of each month. Corresponding Secretary: Heidi sent condolence cards and get well cards to the following people. Nadine Morrow, Kim and Ron Gee, the Green family, Rick and Donna Humphries, Pat and Dan Palmer, Denise Hatakeyama, and Mark Banda. Recording Secretary: Nothing to report. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Rescue: We have a 7 month old brown puppy who is being fostered by Melissa O'Shell. We also have two 5 year old females and a 14 month old female who is recovering from cruciate surgery. OLD BUSINESS: Pooch Parade: Mark reported that everything went well. David and Brenda Valenzuela, JoAnn Stark and Nina Roben were in attendance. Everyone had a good time and there was a good turnout. Water Test NCSC: Celia is unsure at this point if we made any money. The judges complimented us on how well we all worked together. They pointed out that we were very organized and things ran smoothly. Water Test NCSD: Debby reported that it was a nice test and that everything went well. It was noted that it is a challenging test to put on since it is so far away. Not sure what we will do next year or who will chair. It's difficult to get stewards, etc. Annual Picnic: Heidi chaired this event and noted that we had a good turn out even though it was very hot. We had 14 dogs testing for CGC and the Advanced CGC. Also, our CGC evaluator donated $ We also had a brief election meeting to announce the new board. Heidi feels that we may want to incorporate some obedience and Rally next time. El Dorado seems to be a good location for 23

us and this event. The permit is only $30.00, bathrooms are close, tables are available, plenty of shade and nobody bothers us. We should consider making this our venue for future picnics. Draft Test: Kathy Wortham reported that she and her committee are all set. They are meeting on Saturday at 2:00 to meet with the judges and set up the coarse. Dinner is being held at The Bone Fish Grill. We have a very small entry. Only 3 dogs, so it will be a short day. Erin is printing a couple of catalogs at home to keep the cost down. Heidi has all of the exhibitor, judge's gifts and trophies ready. Heidi is also responsible for hospitality and since we are having a pot luck lunch, she'd like everyone to bring a dish. Trailer Clean Out: The trailer looks great after the clean-up. Heidi suggests the club buy a few new tubs, as some of them have fallen apart. The trailer does have a leak and we need to have it fixed before the rainy season begins. She also feels that someone should go look at storage units so we can store the baby gates, filing cabinets and other things that are seldom used in the unit. Denise has offered to let us store the unit on her property. Heart Doppler Clinic : So far, we have 9 dogs. We had 10, but Mark Banda pulled out. We do need to have 10 dogs. There is an announcement on Jack Bradshaw under the title, "Clubs." Dr. Zimmerman can do more than 10 dogs, so we need to spread the word. Heidi will also send a note to Gloria for our upcoming newsletter. Regional Specialty: Melanie is doing the raffle and Karrie will help. Fred and Jean Frueh have also volunteered to help in any capacity. Ray Shapland will help ring side and with grabbing things from tables for judges. He is also helping with the teardown. We will have a golf cart available for our use. We have lots of small items for the raffle. Mostly, dog related. Alex and Rob are donating cash. There has been some money coming in for pre-sale tickets through Facebook. We also have sponsors that have been offered two different levels. Platinum level is a banner that is placed ringside and a smaller size that is for Gold level sponsorship. The cost is $ for Platinum and $ for Gold. So far, we have three gold level sponsorships. This will all be going towards our expenses. We are in need of catalog ads and trophy donations. Otherwise, status quo. Regional Specialty Raffle: Heidi reports that she needs a lot more items to make sure we have full baskets. An went to the General Membership yesterday asking for donations. Dianne Campbell is donating 6 Samsung Tablets that are slightly used. Kerry Dennis will bring a basket to the show. Heidi will be making phone calls for donations if necessary. Basket wrapping is scheduled 12/13/15, but Melanie suggested we postpone it until after the holidays. Heidi is reluctant to do this since Erin, Karrie, Laurie, Pam and Celia are all available to wrap on that day. Heidi feels that Melanie should talk about the logistics of setting up the raffle the day of the show. Also, how many people she will need, who will sell tickets, etc. Spring 2016 Draft Test: We will be having a two day test. Regular and Advanced testing on Saturday and Sunday. Karrie is chairing this event and wants to use local judges for this test. NEW BUSINESS: 24

It is a two day test and will have DDX on Saturday and TD and DD on Sunday. Spring Draft Test 2016: Date: April 16-17, 2016 Location: Kenneth Hahn Regional Park (Tentative). Chair: Karrie Cook Secretary: Erin Zimmer Third Member: Celia Gebhart Chief Steward: Debby Rothwell Judges: Judi Adler and John Pearson As of right now, we do not have Kenneth Hahn Park confirmed. Karrie and Erin will be meeting with the park employees to see if they will approve our test. If we do not get approval, we will be moving the test to Schabarum Park in Rowland Heights. This test is a two day test and we will be having all levels on both days with a maximum of 15 entries. 30 No details at this time. NCSC Introduction to Water Seminar: At this time, we have no concrete plans. We would include a Tadpole test if we do the seminar. Our initial idea is to have the water seminar one year and the draft seminar the next. We will be updating the information later. NCSC Water Test 2016: Location: Lake Castaic Dates: October 1st and 2nd (This is our first choice. Date may change. Our second choice is September 24th-25th). Chair: TBD. Possibly Emily Floyd with Debby Rothwell co-chairing. Secretary: Erin Zimmer Third Member: Shannon Gasowski Chief Steward: Kathy Mitchell Judges: Lynelle Warrick for both days. Heidi Forrest on Saturday and Karrie Cook on Sunday. There was a discussion regarding the San Diego test and when it will be. Heidi will contact CeCe Guyett and talk about dates. There is a possibility of San Diego having an early test in August, but that would depend on the tides. The San Diego test will be a one day test due to the fact that it's so far away and the NCSC club members do a large portion of the work and set-up. Heidi will give us an update after she talks to CeCe. Water Training Dates 2016: Karrie will be putting a comprehensive list of all the training dates that she will be submitting to the lake at Castaic. Once she does, she will be ing those individuals who are interested in training. She will also be taking a poll to see which days most people are interested and able to train. When everyone has responded, she will then tell the people at Castaic which days we will be training. Fall Picnic and Election Meeting: Date: October 23rd, 2016 Location: El Dorado Park, Long Beach Chair: Heidi Forrest 30

At present, no plans have been made other than the date and location. Heidi will keep us updated with any new information. Fall Draft Test, 2016: Date: December 11th, 2016 Location: TBD Chair: JoAnn Stark Secretary: Karrie Cook Third Member: Heidi Forrest Chief Steward: TBD Judges: Debby Rothwell and Erin Zimmer. If we do DDX, it will be a separate test and we will have Kathy Mitchell judge. Spring Draft Test, 2017: Date: TBD Location: TBD Chair: Erin Zimmer Secretary: Debby Rothwell and Heidi Forrest as co-chair Third Member: TBD Chief Steward: TBD Judges: Karrie Cook and Dawn Drudge. *Erin will call Dawn to see where she is at in her judging assignments. This will determine who will be able to judge with Karrie. This test is going to be a work in progress. The NCA National Specialty is being held in Oregon from April 10-15th, They may be having a draft test at the specialty. In which case, we might be helping/hosting that event. If so, we might have to cancel or reschedule our test. Karrie will be getting in touch with Kevin Gallagher to find out any new information on the specialty draft test and get back to us. The Working Dog Meeting was adjourned at 3:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted by, Shannon Gasowski, Recording Secretary 31
