Well, "they" were wrong! A few days before our test, Southern California got some much needed rain, but it also impacted our test just a li le bit. Our test, which was held at Prado Regional Park in Chino, is a beau ful piece of land with a large lake, rolling hills and an equestrian center. Part of our freight haul was to take place on the horse trail, but we discovered the day before the test that, because of our much needed rain, it was now ankle deep in very slippery mud. We were faced with a big dilemma and in the words of Tim Gunn (if you watch Project Runway, you'll know what I mean), we had to "Make it Work!" So, make it work we did. With the help of our judges, Edie Koster and Kathy Mitchell, and my awesome Chief Story and pictures con nue on page 4 Happily Ever After Rescue Report page 16

2 Page 2 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT... Happy Newf Year! I hope this cooler weather inds you out enjoying some quality time with your Newfoundlands whether it be draft training, obedience or some extra long walks around the neighborhood. The NCSC Board met on November 23 rd and mapped out most of our activities for the club year. We have a busy year planned with something for everyone and we hope to see some new faces out there. We ve already had a busy couple of months with our draft test and Christmas tree pull taking place in December and our Regional Specialty, introduction to draft training, and working dog meeting were held in January. The next few months will be just as action packed, so be sure to read through this issue to get all of the details. Our directories were mailed at the beginning of January. If you didn t receive yours or your information is listed incorrectly or has been updated, please be sure to let me know right away. The Back To Back Regional Specialties and supported entries held January 1 4, 2015, at the beautiful Empire Polo Grounds in Indio were a huge success. We had a great entry of 70 dogs, the trophies were well received, and our raf le was enjoyed by not only Newf fanciers, but many at the showgrounds there to support other breeds. The rescue parade and fun properties classes were enjoyed by all in attendance. In addition to our Show Committee (Celia Gebhart, Gigi Grif ith, Sharyn Jeter, Cathy Smitha, and Kathy Wortham), several key volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the show. Melanie Bigelow was our raf le chair and this year s raf le topped all previous raf les. Mark Banda and Dan Palmer worked grounds and transported crates, dryers, raf le baskets, trophies, and hospitality items before, during and after the show. Lynn Hirth captured over 1600 images of the weekend s events and her photos can be seen at If you ve never been to a Regional Specialty, try to make it a point to come out next year. You won t be disappointed, and seeing the lineup of dogs in the Best of Breed competition will leave you in awe. I hope to see you at some upcoming draft training sessions, the Walk on the Beach on February 8 th, the annual dinner March 7 th, and/or the draft test on March 22 nd. Details for all of these events can be found in this issue. When bringing your dog to events, please re Pawprints member to keep him/her on a short leash and ask before introducing your dog to others. While some Newfoundlands get along well with all dogs, others have a smaller circle of friends. It s always a good idea to bring a crate for your dog to events. They need and enjoy downtime just like we do. 4 Page Fall Draft Test Continued from page 1 Pawprints Making it Work at the 2014 Fall Draft Test. Photos left to right: Fred Frueh with Abby; Karrie Cook with Erin Zimmer s Light and Sterling. Steward, Melanie Bigelow, we were able to get a new freight haul designed before we had to leave the park. Test day was a very pre y Southern California day. It was clear, cool, partly sunny and perfect for our Newfies. Our theme for our dra test was a Christmas theme. We had great decora ons that were loaned to us by Fred and Jean Freuh and set up by the very cra y Laurie Shapiro. I think our maneuvering course was the most fes ve one I've ever seen! We had a nice flat area for basic control and we used an exis ng horseshoe pit for our maneuvering course. The horseshoe pit did provide some interes ng terrain for the dogs. They were maneuvering on grass, dirt, and over a few curbs and our removable object was a bundle of Christmas presents. A few of the dogs had trouble with basic control and with harness and hitch, but overall, everyone did well. Since we had a few dogs pull a er the maneuvering course, we were going to have just one freight haul. A er a short lunch break, it was on to the 3 minute out of sight. Unfortunately, Fred's dog, Abby, got stung by a bee. He took her out and we administered first aid. With the help of some Benadryl and roast beef, Abby was good to go! I have to stop and state here what an awesome club we have! In order for Abby to finish, we needed volunteers to do another 3 minute out of sight and another freight haul. Quite a few people volunteered so that Abby could finish the dra test and now she can add a one to her DD! Now that is teamwork! The freight haul went very smoothly. Not one dog failed, and at the end of the day, we had three re qualifiers and one new Team Dra Dog. The requalifying Dra Dogs were, Debby Rothwell's Meara, who is now a DD2 and Fred Frueh's Abby, who now has that well earned DD1. Our Team Dra Dog went to Erin Zimmer's dogs, Light and Sterling. It's important to note that Erin's dogs were handled by Karrie Cook because Erin had just given birth to a beau ful baby boy named Charles and wasn't quite ready to exhibit in a dra test. Light re qualified for the first me and Sterling now has his TDD. A working event is a large undertaking and certainly doesn't happen without a lot of help. Thank you to our lovely judges, Kathy and Edie, for being so kind to a first me Dra Chair. You were both so great and professional and made my day much easier! Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to steward, set up, take down and clean up! No working event would happen without all of you. Also, a huge thanks to Melanie for walking, walking and re walking the freight haul and then never skipping a beat when we had to change it and walk it again. Thanks to Debby Rothwell for keeping my stuff together and being a great secretary and to Heidi Forrest for handling breakfast. Thanks also to the Fruehs for the decora ons and to Laurie for making our area in the park beau ful. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to Lynn Hirth, the woman behind the lens. Without Lynn, none of us would have photos of our dogs. Lynn comes out to every event and volunteers her me and energy to help make memories last a life me! For those entrants who didn't qualify, don't worry! The Spring test is just around the corner!

Our introduction to draft work seminar went off as planned at Huntington Beach Central Park on Saturday, January 10 th. Liza Cook did a brief demonstration of basic control, harnessing and hitching, backing up, and maneuvering. We reviewed the types of carts and harnesses, as well as the physics and rationale behind equipment selections. Most of our Photos from top: Molly showed increased confidence in the cart as the day progressed; Laurie Shapiro was instrumental in the success of the day; Lacey and Josie enjoyed their turns pulling their carts

7 Page 7 Pawprints, Feb/Mar 2015 seminar was dedicated to fitting the dogs with harnesses and getting them comfortable in the carts. This was possible because we had a great group of volunteers that came out to lend a hand along with their carts and harnesses: Melanie Bigelow, Fred Frueh, Laurie Shapiro and Erin Zimmer. Jean Frueh was on hand to capture the event in photos. Coming out to participate in the seminar were Brett and Ellen Selsted with 8 month old Norman, Robert and Dianne Campbell with Molly, Ray Shapland and Denise Fay with Josie, Lacey and Riley, and Marilyn Maltby with Louie. Josie and Louie have been training with the draft group for some time and worked on improving their skills in the cart, as well as fine tuning harness selections and fit. We were all thrilled that Norman, Molly, Lacey and Riley were all pulling carts happily by the end of our training and we hope to see them at our upcoming training sessions. Thanks to everyone for helping out and braving the weather to make this event a success. A good time was had by all, especially the dogs! Photos clockwise from upper left: Riley looked like a pro his first time in the harness and cart; Louie looks striking in his red harness; Norman took to Fred s PVC cart with ease; Riley and the others enjoyed the cool weather and rain; Liza provided a demonstration to start out the day

9 Page 9 Pawprints, Feb/Mar nd Annual NCSC Christmas Tree Pull A Success Submitted by Karrie Cook We were contacted by the folks at Rich ield Pines a couple of months ago requesting us to return with our Newfoundlands for tree hauling, photo opportunities, and general good cheer around the holidays. Not to disappoint, we held our second annual Christmas Tree Pull on Sunday, December 14 th and it was a great success! Mark Banda was our of icial Public Relations guy and got us some face time in the local newspaper (see inset). Several people that attended mentioned the article and coming out just to see the Newfoundlands! Since this was our second year, we knew better what to expect and were able to improve on last year s booth. Once Ho Ho Haul: (clockwise from upper left): Most of the gang. Posing all these dogs and handlers is no small feat! Norman Selsted likely made this Christmas card; Luke Forrest; our set-up at Richfield Pines

10 Page 10 Pawprints 2nd Annual Christmas Tree Pull A Success continued from page 9 again, Mark Banda was kind enough to bring his beautiful hand made cart all the way from Port Hueneme to brighten up the booth and provide some great photo opportunities. Steve Batris served as our Santa, arriving in his hot rod which was a hit for the kids and kids at heart alike! Lynn Hirth took hundreds of photos of our booth, the dogs hauling trees, and various members of the group posing among the beautiful pines. Fred and Jean Frueh made a special trip and were kind enough to lend us some of their whimsical hand made signs to decorate our booth even though they did not stay at the event. Hauling the trees is just a small part of this event and we hauled only about half a dozen trees. Leia Kell wins for largest tree hauled and from the greatest distance up at the very top of the tree farm! Trees were also hauled by Barney McKinnon, Quint Gebhart, Laird Gomez, and Liza Cook. We educated many people about our breed and provided information about our club and rescue. So many were impressed by out gentle giants and I m sure several of our dogs made it on the annual family Christmas cards! This looks like it will become an annual event and will continue to grow over the years. Plan to join us next year; it s lots of fun. The folks at Rich ield Pines are super friendly and accommodating, and they just love our dogs. The owner told me, The dogs and the tree farm are just a good match! I couldn t agree more.

14 Pawprints, Feb/Mar 2015 Membership Corner: Braags!!! In Memoriam Page 14 Mary Killian April 17, December 21, 2014 Mary was a founding member of the Newfoundland Club of San Diego, as well as a member of the Newfoundland Club of Southern California, Newfoundland Club of Northern California, and Newfoundland Club of America. She was active in many aspects of the Newfoundland fancy, including water work, draft work, obedience, rally, and conformation, and she earned working titles on all of her Newfoundlands. She also participated in and was passionate about therapy work with her Newfoundlands over the years. She was an NCA Water Test Judge and bred several Newfoundland litters under the Dreamseas kennel name. Mary was always willing to lend a hand at draft and water tests whether stewarding, organizing breakfast or lunch, or serving as raffle chair. She had a heart of gold with an easygoing personality, was compassionate and quickwitted, shared her knowledge of the Newfoundland breed willingly with others, and was a wonderful friend to many. Mary was trained and worked as a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Hospice, and Home Health. She is survived by her daughter Dawn and long-time companion Andy Patterson.

16 Pawprints, Feb/Mar 2015 RESCUE REPORT: February/March 2015 Page 16 Karrie Cook and Laurie Shapiro Life is Short A dog club is made up not of dogs, but of people. We unexpectedly lost one of our long me club members and Rescue advocates with the passing of Mary Killian. Mary always offered to help with rescue in any way we needed her. She also proudly sported our rescue apparel and always asked when we would be ge ng new items in her favorite color purple of course! Mary was involved in all aspects of the Newfoundland breed: working events, conforma on, breeding, breed educa on and Rescue. Perhaps most importantly she touched many lives with her long history of work in pet assisted therapy. Mary s passing reminds us to live like our dogs be present and enjoy today; we never know how many tomorrows we may have. We are thankful for dona ons received in loving memory of Mary from Kathy Mitchell and from the Rosen family. We are saddened that Newfoundland Club of America member and Newf Tide editor Maredith Reggie also passed away unexpectedly. SCNRC appreciates the dona on in her memory from Kathy Mitchell. We would like to thank other friends of rescue who made dona ons since the last report. Mary Sheehan made a dona on in honor of Woody Smith and his foster dog Cole. The Henry family made a second dona on towards the medical care of Dino. The Ma hews family made a dona on with their NCSC dues. The Pedroni family has made an annual tradi on of dona ng in honor of their adopted rescue girl Mawgan. Our dear supporters the Forney and Snyder families made generous end of year dona ons once again. And as a reminder that every bit helps, Dusty (a technician at Arbor Animal Hospital) bought some of our logo apparel to give to her family as holiday gi s! Quite a lot has gone on in the last two months! Rescue was invited to par cipate at the Regional Specialty show in Indio on January 2 nd. Booth space was provided for rescue fundraising and many chilly spectators and par cipants alike thought it was a good idea to buy rescue sweatshirts! Thanks to the handiwork of Jean Frueh we also had a beau ful array of handmade dog bibs to give away with a dona on. Even more fun than the shopping opportunity was the new Proper es Class! All dogs were welcome to enter: rescues, show dogs, veterans, and even one li le guy who thinks he s a lap Newf! With a modest entry dona on of only $5 per category, a generous $300 was donated to rescue. Rescued dogs were also spotlighted in the Rescue Parade. Moose Gee was quite a hit since he is in amazing condi on at 11 years old! Also par cipa ng were young Lacey Fay Shapland and squirrely Barney Shapiro. Rick Redpath awarded each rescued dog a beau ful custom medallion designed and donated by Cathy Smitha and family. Thank you to the en re show commi ee for including Rescue in your spectacular event! LIFE AFTER RESCUE: Barnaby In doing the work of breed rescue we frequently deal with the unpleasant results of irresponsible pet ownership. This is an update on a lucky rescue boy and his incredibly responsible and loving owners. We hope you will want to support the family either directly or by sharing this informa on with your animal loving network of friends, colleagues and acquaintances. h p:// Mike and Bonnie adopted 2 year old Barnaby (formerly Thor from Las Vegas) on October 10, 2014 through the SCNRC. The first me they met him they fell instantly in love. They have two other dogs who are also rescues, Jake and Stella; Jake is a Border Collie/Newfoundland Mix and Stella is a Polish Hound. Barnaby was known to have several orthopedic issues, but the orthopedic surgeon SCNRC consulted said there was no one thing to surgically repair that would make him be er. The surgeon advised that con nuing his condi oning program would be of the most benefit. Indeed, Barnaby went from being able to walk

17 Pawprints, Feb/Mar 2015 Page 17 only a few houses down the street to walking 1 2 miles daily! (Thank you foster families aka physical therapists!) One evening right before Christmas Barnaby cried out while playing with his brother Jake. When Mike and Bonnie took him to the vet the next morning for a suspected so ssue injury, they got the devasta ng news of a sha ered hip. A er consulta ons with several veterinary specialists it was determined that he needed a total hip replacement, at a cost of about $10,000. You can imagine their surprise and dismay! Barnaby had surgery on the 20th of December. Unfortunately Mike also needed surgery just 2 days later. Bonnie writes: Mike and I always fully accept the monetary commitment with animals but this has hit us pre y hard. Including the presurgery consulta ons, the surgery itself and post op care, our vet bill is over $10,000, so we felt we would turn to our pet loving friends to ask for help. If you could post this (gofundme link) on your home pages that would also help us greatly. Mike and I are very apprecia ve for any financial assistance offered. Thank you in advance. The Struzik Family Thank you to our club members and friends who have already contributed to Barnaby s campaign. Please consider helping this sweet dog s family in any way you can. Barnaby is making great strides in his recovery. We look forward to keeping you updated on his progress. And now for some happy adop on stories! Cocoleka/Chelsea ADOPTED! Now named Chelsea, this barely one year old girl had a turbulent upbringing and an even ul path to her forever home. She was placed by her breeder at a home in Riverside where she was an outside only dog, dealing with extremes in temperature. We were told that she was on a raw diet and ate just two chicken legs per day! When the breeder demanded her back, she was ck infested and severely underweight. Once healthy again, she spent some me in a home for about a month. She would have stayed there permanently, but had some difficulty figuring out where she fit in the mul dog household. A er a number of phone calls and e mails with Karrie, the second home decided it would be best if Rescue found her a permanent home where she could receive more a en on. She was lovingly fostered through the holidays by mother daughter team Sharon and Yvonne Golub who quickly fell in love with her. Chelsea was adopted by an experienced Newf owner who met Woody Smith, Shirley Brown and 3 or 4 (who can remember?) of our older rescue dogs in the wai ng room at Arbor Animal Hospital last August. Woody and Shirley insisted Jill HAD to wait there to meet Laurie. Jill was soon to lose her beloved Newf and we all bonded over our love for the breed and our love for the Newfs we had lost. Contact informa on was exchanged and the rest is history! Chelsea now has a loving, stable family with 2 human brothers and 2 Labrador brothers. Plenty of opportuni es for play! Daisy/Lily ADOPTED! Lucky, lucky Lily! This 7 month old pet shop pup was adopted by Stephanie Brown, an experienced St. Bernard owner. Sadly, Stephanie and Laurie met when Stephanie s dog Hooch was being treated for cancer. She expressed interest in Newfoundland rescue and her veterinarian connected the two. Lily is an ac ve girl, and thanks to her new mom will enjoy life in Orange County with lots of trips to the barn for me with her horses, and also get to spend a lot of me at her home in the country in Idaho. Don t you just love this picture of Lily enjoying snow? Thank you to Celia and Dennis Gebhart for rescuing and fostering this busy girl. Thanks also to Debby Rothwell and Peter Schran for B&B services at Thanksgiving. RESCUE REPORT continues on next page

18 Page 18 Pawprints, Feb/Mar 2015 RESCUE REPORT: Feb/March 2015 Millie ADOPTED Ever the so touch, Shirley Brown failed foster care AGAIN! Millie is happy to be in her forever home with Newfy Rescue Ruby Dee and Shirley s heart s desire: shelter rescue Springer Spaniel Ivy. Thank you Shirley for giving this older, special needs girl a loving home. Dino FOSTER CARE Dino con nues to be a regular visitor at Arbor Animal Hospital. The Sones, Dino s long term foster family, are truly amazing! In addi on to their jobs and other volunteer work, they provide a loving home for adopted Newf Maggie and foster boy Dino. Dino s medica on schedule is so complicated it prac cally needs a spreadsheet to stay on track. His skin condi on is quite severe, requiring mul ple oral medica ons and lots of medicated baths. Even with several types of eye drops applied several mes daily his eyes produce next to no tears, and we re sure he is blind. With all this against him he is totally Newf loving Dino begging for a belly rub a en on and belly rubs, wan ng to be wherever his people are. Thanks to the Sones we are able to provide him with a loving home and good care for as long as he has good quality of life. Cole FOSTER CARE Skin issues in a Newf are so very difficult!!! Just ask anyone who has dealt with this firsthand. We are s ll working on the right combina on of diet and medica ons to get Cole comfortable and healthy. Woody Smith literally has a spreadsheet for administering Cole s medica ons and treatments. Thank you Woody what would we do without you? Shadow FOSTER CARE Maybe Shadow will live to be 20? He is ge ng close to 15 years old, our li le mini Newf. We recently added the NSAID carprofen to his regimen and he has become more lively! Woody reports his walks are longer and faster now. Thank you Woody for fostering this li le guy for three years.

Our report for our non profit status issue went in in October and we are good with the state un l We have 20 people who are delinquent on dues. We currently have 5 month old Daisy who is being fostered by the Gebharts. She will be going to her new home soon. Dino, Millie, Shadow and Cole con nue in permanent foster care and are doing well. OLD BUSINESS: Water Test: Everyone was very happy with the site and everyone at Puddingstone was happy with us. Judi Adler was very happy with how well we all worked together and sent a glowing report to the NCA. Puddingstone was really accommoda ng and gave us free parking. We may look into paying for parking if they would give us a reduced fee for using the swim beach. Celia noted that all the stewards were great and Kathy Wortham did an awesome job being a first me secretary. Annual Picnic: The annual picnic was at El Dorado Park in Long Beach with Heidi Forrest as the Chairperson. We had a barbeque, played games and everyone had fun. The permit was $30.00 and there was a very good turn out. The total cost was $ It was discussed that we should have a possible phone tree to call new members to get them to come out to the annual picnic. We also need someone to greet people coming to each event.

25 Pawprints, Feb/Mar 2015 Page 25 Dra Test: Sunday, December 7th, 2014, Prado Regional Park, Chino. Shannon reports that everything is in line for the event. Judges hospitality is handled and the dinner will be at Cannataro's in Chino. Melanie is Chief Steward and has all the help she needs. Laurie Shapiro is handling the decora ons and since it will be a Christmas theme, she is borrowing items from the Fruehs. All the exhibitor gi s and trophies are handled and Debby Rothwell is handing all the entries and the catalog. Christmas Tree Pull: December 14th, 2014 Richfield Pines Farm, Yorba Linda. The event will take place from 9 5. Steve Summers will be there to be Santa. We have lots of volunteers for this event. We are trying to figure out a way to solicit dona ons for the club. We would also like to make this an annual event for NCSC. Kathy Wortham will make a banner for our table and Celia Gebhart will take care of the insurance. Regional Specialty: January 1 4, 2015, Palm Springs. Gigi reports that everything is going smoothly. Lots of really good raffle items are coming in and the response has been great! The judges are all in place and we will have the same ring for all four days. There is no printed premium list. Everything is online and on facebook. Also had an ad in New ide. We will also be adver sing on NCA e notes. For dollars, we can put anything on e notes and it's sent to the en re membership. Celia is handling the judges hospitality and all of the volunteers. We are star ng with Veteran Sweepstakes and ending with the proper es class. All the money from the proper es class will be going to rescue. NEW BUSINESS: Calendar: Karrie has a calendar hand out with all of our upcoming working events, dog shows and fun events. We are trying to have at least one fun event each quarter. Spring Dra Test: March 22nd, 2015, Hun ngton Beach Central Park. Heidi Forrest is the Chairperson. Karrie will be Chief Steward and Heidi will be providing Cheryl Dondino hospitality. So far, the permit has been handled. Annual Dinner: Saturday, March 7th, Celia Gebhart and Shannon Gasowski are chairing this event. The restaurant has yet to be determined, but will be in the South. Pet Expo: April 10 12th, 2015, Costa Mesa Fairgrounds. Debby Rothwell is chairing. No other informa on at this me. Camp Newfie: April 23 26th, 2015, Pirate's Cove. Informa on will be forthcoming. Na onal Specialty: May 5 9th, Rhode Island. Special Olympics: June 13 14th, 2015 at Cal State Long Beach. Cathy Smitha and Laurie Shapiro will be chairing this event. Veterans Picnic: June 7th, 2014 at Hun ngton Central Park. Rene Romero has always chaired this in the past, but since she has moved, we will need a new chair. Heidi and Karrie may chair the event. Tadpole Test: June 21st, Fiesta Island, San Diego. No chairperson as of yet. Nomina ons Mee ng: September 6th, 2015 at the home of Dennis and Celia Gebhart. The elec on mee ng will be at the annual picnic on October 11th. Pooch Parade: July 19th, 2015, Ventura. JoAnn Stark usually Chairs this event, but Mark Banda will check with her to see if she wants to do it again.

26 Page 26 Fun Events: The goal is to have one a quarter. In the first quarter we have the Walk on the Beach which is scheduled for February 7th, Melanie and Shannon will be chairing. Another idea is lunch in the park. A "Dog's Dine Out" night at Lazy Dog Café is in the works and a possible Spring Fling picnic that includes obedience, dra, water, and rally demo's and courses. A grooming seminar as well as a beginning dra seminar is also being talked about and planned. Peaceful Pets: Laurie Shapiro is bringing this business to our a en on. It is a place that handles the crema on of your pet with a different process that is much be er to the environment. They are also willing to let us use their facili es for some events and we will be able to bring our own pets into the building. Fundraisers: We will be planning Dog Washes and Garage Sales. Debby will be checking into the possibility of doing an online store. We need to find out if it will affect our non profit status. Debby will speak with Joe Wurcher and Karrie will speak with Sharyn Jeter about our op ons. Gigi has logo ideas for tee shirts and will give us more informa on once she gets all the informa on she needs. Other ideas include an all breed obedience seminar, and a handling seminar by Kim and Gigi Griffith. Mandatory Spay/Neuter: This is an issue that is rapidly growing in every city. We need to be concerned about this as a club and decide how we want to distribute informa on to our members regarding these issues. The board needs to further discuss how and what kind of ar cles we can put in Pawprints. The board took a vote to send the membership informa on on the issue. Gigi Griffith made a mo on to forward informa on to the General Membership and Mark Banda seconded the mo on. Pawprints: There was a discussion about the possibility of having Veterinarians having a column in our newsle er. The only issue at hand is that we need to allow many Veterinarians with many opinions. Nothing is set in stone at this point. Website: The website needs to be updated. We will be asking Ed and Virginia McKinnon if they will take it over. They have full board approval. Melanie will call the McKinnons to see if they will take on the job. If we want to change the host site, we need to find out about our contract and termina on fee. A possible new site would be four square. Celia will look to see how long we are locked into the Fat Cow site. Celia Gebhart made a mo on to close the mee ng. Mark Banda seconded that mo on. The mee ng was closed at 5:06 p.m. Respec ully submi ed, Shannon Gasowski, Recording Secretary
