5 AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB POINTS SCHEDULE OF POINTS FOR DIVISION 15 EFFECTIVE MAY 15, 2013 Division 16 is comprised of: Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, & Wisconsin For complete Conformation Championship requirements see Chapter 16 of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows. The Points toward a Championship shall be awarded to the Winners Dog and Bitch of each breed or variety based on the actual number of dogs or bitches competing in that breed or variety. If the dog designated Winners Dog of Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Breed or Variety, the dogs of both sexes that have been entered for Best of Breed of Variety competition and that have been defeated in such competition, shall be counted in addition to the dogs that completed in the regular classes for its sex in calculating championship points. If the dog designated Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed or Variety, the dogs of its own sex that have been entered for Best of Breed or Variety competition that have been defeated in competition for Best of Opposite Sex, shall be counted in addition to the dogs that completed in the regular classes for its sex in calculating championship points. After points have been computed for Winners Dog and Winners Bitch subject to the above two stipulations, the dog awarded the Best of Winners shall be credited with the number of points calculated for Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, whichever is greater. In counting the number of eligible dogs in competition, a dog that is disqualified, or that is dismissed, excused or ordered from the ring by the judge, or from which all awards are withheld shall not be included. Any dog which shall have won fifteen points shall become a Champion of Record, if six or more of said points shall have been won at two shows with a rating of three or more championship points each and under two different judges, and some one or more of the balance of said points shall have been won under some other judge or judges than the two judges referred to above. 17 Beginning Agility Seminar Sunday June 30 Rhonda Meath and Mike Teh are presenting a beginning agility seminar for German Shepherds and their handlers. This is your chance to get your feet and paws wet in the sport of agility. Show what your dog can do! Location: Northern Stars K9 Resort and Spa, a beautiful facility just a few miles from Afton State Park. This is a new facility and they require that you bring clean tennis shoes to run your dog, not the shoes you walk in with. Depending on the weather, the parking area may be muddy so this is something to consider as far as footwear. 19 Temperment Testing will be offered at the GSD Fun Day: Gene Gray, Evaluator German Shepherds will be tested first then if time permitting we will test other breeds. The TC (temperament certification) is an important title for the GSD breed. It says that the dog was evaluated by experienced GSD evaluators and found to be temperamentally sound. The TC title is also an important part of other titles such as the CHIC (Canine Health Information Center) and the AOE (Award of Excellence). Purpose & Objectives of the Temperament Test This article lists the objectives of the exercises in the Temperament Test, their objectives, and a brief summation of each exercise. This should be reviewed not only by the handlers but also by the club helpers for each one of the stations. Behavior Toward Strangers: objective to measure the dog s reaction to strangers in a non-threatening situation. Neutral Stranger: This test is to simulate a typical street situation. The stranger will carry on a conversation with you, but will not make overtures to the dog. Friendly Stranger: The stranger will make overtures to the dog and will touch the dog and hander as well. Reaction To Aural Stimuli (Noise): objective to measure alertness to aural stimuli and the degree of investigative behavior toward the stimuli. Can-rattling: After the rattling begins, the dog is allowed to approach the blind to investigate the source of the noise. As the dog comes around the blind to discover the source of the noise and investigate the can, the dog is given 20 seconds to make a close inspection. DOG MAY BE ENCOURAGED by the using phrases like what s that? or find it. Gun Test: If the dog turns and/or moves toward the sound when the gun is shot, the handler may follow. The dog may be encouraged as in the can-rattling test. Reaction To Visual Stimuli: objective to measure the dog s reaction to sudden visual stimuli, degree of investigative behavior and startle recovery. Umbrella Test: Handler and dog proceed toward the assistant sitting and when the dog is about 3 (no closer) from the tip of the umbrella, it will be opened directly toward the dog. The open umbrella is then lowered and rested on the ground while the assistant retains the handle in his hand. He dog is allowed to move forward (with encouragement if necessary) to investigate the umbrella. It is the recovery that is judged. Footing Test: objective to measure the dog s reaction to unusual footing. Footing Test: Handler and dog approach a strip of polyethylene and proceed directly across an exercise pen laid flat on the ground. Aggressive Stranger: objective to measure the dog s capacity to recognize and react in a positive, guarding manner to a potentially threatening situation and, in the event of a threat, to react in an aggressive, confident manner. Self-protective/Aggressive Reaction: this has three parts; the entrance of the stranger, the strangers approach to the dog and handler, and the threatening gestures by the weird stranger. The dog s reaction to each is assessed and, if a positive response, the helper will proceed. 20 Geocaching Day June 29 We have finally scheduled another geocaching day! This is a fun sport that you can participate in around the world. You are hunting for caches (small containers ranging from microsized to ammo box size. You use a GPS designed to track where you are via satellites. This event will be held at Afton State Park. This year the park is providing a multi cache that has 4 stages. After you find the first cache you get the coordinates to the next one and so on until you reach the final cache. The multi cache set is on fairly level ground, no big hills. There are other caches there with hills if you want more adventure. I have reserved 5 GPS s from the park and I have 2. Some of you may have phones with geocaching ability. There are various apps for this. State Parks require a park sticker, either a yearly or daily permit. Please stop at the ranger station as you enter the park if you do not have a permit. Daily permits are $5 and yearly permits are $25 yearly permits are valid for one year from the month of purchase. Plus, you can receive a discount on a permit for other vehicles you own. After you have your permit drive to the last parking lot. Location: Afton State Park Time: 10:00 We will have a pot luck.
