For a myriad of reasons, time slipped away, and this issue of the Shep-O-Gram, although prepared for July and August, has been revised to be our September and October issue. Rest assured that photos from September and October events will be included in the next edition, and my apologies for the delay. Looking back, this issue of the Shep-O-Gram features full lists of conformation and performance results from our 2016 Specialty Show, along with winner photographs provided by Valerie Harrington, show photographer. President Peggy Simerson s update on page 2 provides a recap of the Club s recent activities. Looking ahead, you can mark your calendars for the GSDCMSP holiday pot luck and match at the Animal Inn, Lake Elmo, Minn., on December 9. More details will follow. 2 President s Message: S H E P - O - G R A M Summer is done, fall has begun and our club's activities are still going strong! August brought us to the Minnesota State Fair, one of our biggest public activities. Our club had a great attendance rate for the Pet Center, and for the first time in many years, we covered 10 of the 12 days benching with our beautiful GSDs for the Minnesota Purebred Dog Breeder s Association. Thank you to Bobby Moore for coordinating daily benching, and to Ron Halling, Amber Eisfeld, Rhonda Meath, and all club members who helped us put on a great GSD Demo day at the Fair. Also, a big thank you to Sue Smith, our SOG Editor, for the SOG- Minnesota State Fair Edition for our Demo day. September activities continued with the GSD Fun Day at the Animal Inn on, September 10th. Thanks to Rhonda Meath and Julie Swinland for coordinating the event. We had great weather, great demos and lots of activities to enjoy with our GSDs. The GSDCMSP Socialization and Obedience Workshop with Ron Halling started back up at the Animal Inn in September, and to round out the month, our Herding Trial was, September 24th and, September 25th. This year, we offered a Herding Instinct Test both days. Thanks to Pamela Magadance, Jinny Bailey, Julie Swinland and all who helped with the Herding Trial. October shows no signs of slowing down, with our GSDCA National October 7th-15th, followed by the GSDCA Sieger Show October 14th-16th, all held at the Purina Farms Grey Summit, Missouri. Purina Farms is a great venue for our dogs, and the National is a great time for both dogs and their people. Enjoy fall weather with your dogs while we still have it. We will soon have more activities indoors rather than outdoors. For the love of GSDs, Peggy Simerson President, GSDCMSP Rhonda Meath and Smith Orlando-bound for AKC Invitational They soar over jumps, weave through poles, fly over the teeter toter and scale the A frame. Ah, these agility dogs; they re all such fabulous athletes. But if you re lucky enough to see some of the German Shepherd demonstrations today, you ll get a chance to observe one of the top canine agility competitors in the country. Our GSDCMSP Demo Day emcee is Rhonda Meath, and her dog, Smith, has been invited to the American Kennel Club Agility Invitational held in Orlando, Fla., on December 16. Only the top five dogs in each AKC-recognized breed are invited to compete, and Smith is the fourth top German Shepherd this year for points earned during the qualifying period from July 1, 2015 to June 30, Smith s registered name is MACH5 Slovanskeho's Majestic Auf De Haus RN MXG2 MJG2 XF T2B5. All of the acronyms preceding and following Smith s name denote the many titles he has earned, but all you really need to know to appreciate Smith, you will glean from watching him run the course and interact with his handler. Smith is fast, Smith is smart, and Smith loves his job. Now seven years old, Smith joined the Meath household at the wee age of 7-1/2 weeks, and he began competing with Rhonda when he was 16 months old. Since then, Smith and Rhonda have racked up an impressive array of accomplishments, culminating with garnering the top agility award, Agility Victor, at the 2015 German Shepherd Dog Club of America National Specialty Show last October. If watching Smith and his comrades in agility inspires you to consider the sport yourself, contact the club for more information. And take Rhonda s advice: Learning to be a handler and team mate with your agility GSD takes time and some work. Building that solid relationship is essential to success. 9 S H E P - O - G R A Get to Know your Board: Diane Blasius-Brown, Treasurer I ve always loved dogs and have had several different breeds, but my favorites were two sable German Shepherds. So when I moved my family to Minnesota, we decided the family needed a new sable German Shepherd. The problem, however, became finding a sable puppy. After a long search, I finally located and bought my sable, Emmie, from Yvonne Nygaard and Stephanie Steigerwald. Emmie was six months old and fit right in with my family of two teenage sons, husband and two other dogs--a Golden Retriever and a Pug. That was the start of a wonderful friendship with both Steff and Yvonne--as well as my introduction the GSDCMSP. Steff and Yvonne would drag me along to Friday night training, and that was it for me. I never knew I could have so much fun or that I would make so many new friends all just from purchasing a puppy! Thor enjoys attending GSDCMSP membership meetings with Diane. I started Emmie in Obedience, completing three different class levels. The intent of the last level was to prepare her for Agility training. Emmie was never very excited about Obedience but took right to the fun of Agility. We trained for a while, and then my trainer felt she was ready for competition. We were excited about that except the timing turned out to take us in a different direction. When I bought Emmie, Steff had planted a seed about breeding her, and it sounded so simple and like great fun. Well, it was fun. Emmie was a great mom and really enjoyed her puppies. I ended up keeping a black and tan male, and Steff took a sable female. The other three went to wonderful homes. So back to Agility we went until a year later when I bred Emmie again. That time I kept Abbie, a sable female do you see a pattern developing??? Emmie want back to Agility and now has her Novice Jumper and Weaves (NJP) title and two of the three points needed to earn her Open title. We are hoping to get that at our next Agility Trial and then maybe her Standard Novice title with all the fun equipment like the a-frame and tire. Emmie will be nine years old, so we re taking it a little easy; we only Trial at our club-sponsored events. When Abbie was about three years old, I bred her to our local AKC Grand Champion, Sundown s Denali Cubbie. And yes, once again I kept a puppy, this time a sable male, Thor. I also co-own two other females; one is Hylowe s Please Please Me of Eden Envy, our first Conformation champion! A quick warning to the uninitiated GSD families tend to multiply! I never dreamed I d own/co-own 6 GSDs. So while I ve been training and breeding, I decided to get more involved in the club activities. I have always been one to jump in with both feet when I join something new it s the best way I know to meet people. After volunteering for several different events, I was coaxed into running for Treasurer. This is not the most popular role, but one I do enjoy. I am currently in my second (and last) term, so let me tell you about it just in case you are interested in running next year! Basically, I am the money person. I collect and deposit all money for the club, pay all bills, record all activity in QuickBooks, reconcile the bank accounts, report on financials at each meeting and report activity financials. I am also a member of the budget committee. It s quite fun when we have a big event Diane guiding Emmie through some Agility action and everyone keeps handing me money I just need to be sure I keep track who gives me what, for what! 10 S H E P - O - G R A M RESCUE UPDATE: Faerieland Rescue FaerieLand Rescue has been busy, as the summer months are the times when folks want to recycle their German Shepherds. Our recent adoptions are: Lucy, a 7-year-old female, left at the Animal Humane Society because of a divorce in December She was on the 24 hour euthanasia list because of a bad ear infection. Molly, an 11-year-old female whose owner was killed in a semi-truck accident 3 years ago. Kota, a 1-½ year-old female whose family did not want her. Mannie, a 1-year-old, male, an owner surrender because of a divorce. Daisy, a 10-year-old female whose owner passed away. Nova, a 9-month-old, female from an Indian reservation. We wish to thank the German Shepherd Dog Club of Mps/St Paul for their continued support without which we could not continue rescuing German Shepherds. We are looking for volunteers and folks to join the fun. We are growing and there are many volunteer opportunities. We are especially in need of foster homes for German Shepherds. Contact Kathy DuVall at or faerielandrescue@gmail.com if you can help. Lucy Nova Daisy Mannie Molly RESCUE UPDATE: Saving Shepherds of Minnesota Summer was busy for Saving Shepherds of MN! Aside from the seven local dogs we took in through owner surrenders and from local shelters, we took in a senior dog through a rescue transfer and brought up 12 dogs from Texas and one from Oklahoma. We had made it a goal to take a road trip at some point to clear out a high kill shelter. When we were contacted about a litter of puppies in Texas that were found in an abandoned house, we decided it was time. Along with those six puppies, we picked up five adult dogs from that same shelter. We were also contacted about a sweet girl in Oklahoma. When two of the co-founders, Randy and Tressa, made the road trip, they stopped and picked her up too. A week later, we had another eight-week-old puppy brought up from another kill shelter in Texas. We are happy to report that 11 of those dogs have already been adopted into their forever homes! One of our Texas girls, Daisy Mae, tested positive for heartworm after we had her vetted. We are committed to helping her through the duration of her treatment. We took in mama Winter and her four three-week-old puppies. They are doing great in their foster home and getting chubby! We also took Brady in off a Craigslist ad; Derby and Gypsy were owner surrenders. We pulled two dogs from shelters, and Harley came as an out-of-state transfer. We have officially taken in over 80 dogs since we pulled our first rescue from the shelter in mid-december! 10 September - October 2016
