The deadline is noon on June 6 and that is the deadline for the Saturday night feast being planned by Bo Vujovich. I am sure that we will need a lot of helpers on Friday June 22 to help set up the rings for the specialties. We will also need a tear down and clean up crew on Sunday June 24. After the specialties, our next big event is the GSD Fun Day July 21 at Verna and Jinny s in Houlton WI. We need a match chair for this event. Kathi Balaban is planning the raffles for the specialty show. Please contact her with donations of items to be raffled off. We will also have our usual 50/50 raffles. We have the conclusion of Pam Magadance s article on vaccinations in this issue, and a review by Kathi Balaban of an odor removing product called AtmosKlear. The authors of these articles are expressing their opinions from their research and experince. I tried AtmosKlear and it certainly seemed to work at eliminatiing some odors I had wanted to get rid of. The June membership meeting is on June 15 at the Animal Inn at 8:30. We are experiencing low attendance again. Remember this club is made up of YOU, and we need your interest and support. The meetings are generally fairly short around 30 minutes. Maybe you would like to come and bring snacks, offer an opinion or just see your fellow members. Come with ideas for the GSD Fun Day. What would you like to see there this year? Several members have had surgeries recently and may appreciate a card, Chris Duffy, Kelly Knight and Sharon Todoroff. We wish them all speedy recoveries. See you at the meeting, right? 3 Should My Dog Get Vaccinated This Year? Part 2 Pam Magadance (when referring to dates on Rabies vaccines) When asked why a different date was used, here are two of the typical answers: Municipal or county ordinances require rabies vaccination more frequently than what the vaccine is licensed for to license dogs and cats in the community where my practice is located. I want to examine the dog or cat at least every one to two years to evaluate the health of the animal, and this is a good way to get the animal owner to come in. Those don t seem like good enough reasons to me to give a vaccination more often than it is needed. If your rabies certificate does not state three years, please question the validity of the date with your vet. There is a group that is trying to rectify this situation - giving rabies shots before they are necessary for the protection of our pet. The Rabies Challenge Fund ( is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization studying the duration of immunity conveyed by rabies vaccines. Their goal is to provide proof of exactly how long the rabies vaccine provides immunities and to get states to change their laws. Their goal is to extend the required interval for rabies boosters to 5 and then to 7 years thereby avoiding unnecessary re-vaccination with its attendant risk of debilitating adverse reactions. This project depends primarily upon grassroots gifts for funding the costs of conducting the requisite vaccine trials. The Rabies Challenge Fund has also been trying to get medical exemptions in all states for sick dogs. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), which represents more than 82,000 vets across the U.S., has recently revised its policy on rabies vaccination to include the following: However, AVMA recognizes some animals might require a waiver from rabies vaccination because the vaccination poses an unacceptably high risk to the health of the individual animal, or a waiver might be necessary for research purposes. If adequate steps can be taken to minimize the chance of exposure to rabies virus, the AVMA recommends that such animals be granted a waiver from mandatory rabies vaccination, upon recommendation of a licensed veterinarian and with the concurrence of the appropriate public health authorities. This recent statement provides a powerful boost to their legislative efforts to incorporate medical exemption clauses into the 35 state laws/regulations which currently do not have them. Ideas to Consider It is true that the diseases that we are protecting our animals from can often be far worse than the miniscule 3 continued next page

4 Vacinations continued chance that a vaccine reaction or side effect will occur: The benefits of vaccinations do outweigh the vaccination risks. However, that is no reason to vaccinate more than is necessary to create immunity. It used to be that to check immunity with a titer test was very expensive - primarily because the test had to be sent out for processing. There is now an easier-to-administer test (it came out last year) that can be done completely in the vet s office or even in the field. This should greatly reduce the cost of titers. When you do decide to have your dog get a vaccination, you can now request a mercury-free vaccination. The U.S. has known about the potential problems of Thimerosal (the mercury-based preservative compound in vaccines) for many years. The World Health Organization voiced concerns as far back as Mercury is a cumulative poison, which means a body has difficultly removing it, and therefore levels of it can grow significantly over time. You can request a Thimerosal-free vaccine. If your vet does not routinely carry this, he can order it. I recently saw an article, written by Jan Rasmussen and originally appearing in NaturallyMagazine.com, about vaccinations that included many ideas to consider for the safety of your dog. Here there are: An adverse reaction to a rabies vaccine may exact a high price to your dog s health and your wallet. Here s what you need to know to make vaccinating your dog safer: 1. Learn to recognize adverse reactions. Short-term reactions include vomiting, facial swelling, fever, lethargy, circulatory shock, loss of consciousness and even death. (If your pet vaccination can be difficult to recognize. They include: Fibrocarcinomas (cancer) at the injection site Seizures and epilepsy Autoimmune disease Chronic digestive problems Allergies Skin diseases Muscle weakness or atrophy Pica (eating inappropriate materials, including feces) Behavioral changes (aggression, separation anxiety, compulsive behaviors, etc.) 2. Vaccinate healthy dogs only. Vaccinating an unhealthy animal can exacerbate illness and do irreparable harm. Also, immunity may not develop after vaccination because of the dog s compromised immune system. This is especially dangerous as you may presume immunity that does not exist. Pets with autoimmune disease or cancer are obviously not healthy, but neither are pets suffering from stress from a move or surgery, a virus or infection, or allergies or skin problems or any other condition compromising health. (Never allow your pet to be vaccinated during surgery.) 3. Ask for a rabies vaccination exemption. If your dog has documented health problems, ask your vet to apply for a rabies vaccination extension or exemption. Many localities permit them even if state law doesn t specifically allow them. If your vet won t apply for an exemption, go elsewhere. You may want to contact a holistic vet who may better understand the dangers of vaccinating an unhealthy animal. 4. Don t vaccinate against rabies within three weeks of other vaccinations or medication for parasites. Multiple vaccines given at once greatly increase the chance of reactions. World-renowned pet vaccination scientist, Dr. Jean Dodds, wrote recently: Rabies vaccines are the most common group of biological products identified in adverse event reports received by the USDA s Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB). 4 Continued on next page

5 Vacinations continued 5. Make sure your dog gets the correct vaccine. If you re vaccinating a puppy, make sure your vet administers a one-year vaccine initially (as late as legally possible) and a three-year vaccine (or whatever is required in your area) thereafter. The one-year and three-year vaccines are virtually identical medically but not under the law. A one-year shot must be followed by revaccination a year later. Note: the one-year shot is not safer than the three-year (except that it may contain fewer adjuvants). 6. Vaccinate at the safest time. Vaccinate in the morning, early in the week, and don t leave the area for at least an hour if possible. Watch for reactions for at least the next 48 hours. Reactions occurring when the closest vet s office is closed can prove disastrous, even fatal. 7. Tell your vet you want a Thimerosol-free vaccine. Thimerosol (mercury) in vaccines has been linked to adverse reactions. Merial, for one, makes one- and three-year thimersol-free rabies vaccines: IMRAB 1 TF and IMRAB 3 TF. Make sure you see TF on the label. (If your vet doesn t carry the vaccine, you may have to vet shop to find the vaccine you want. You might also ask why the vet why he/she doesn t carry it.) 8. Find a vet trained in homeopathy to vaccinate your dog. Certain homeopathic remedies given before, during and after vaccinating can lessen the chance of ill effects from vaccination. 9. Report all vaccine reactions to your vet and make sure they re recorded in your pet s file. Have the vet sign relevant pages, get copies and put them in a safe place. (Vets lose records, retire and move away.) Also report the reaction to the drug s manufacturer. (You ll need the vaccine lot number.) Vets are notoriously bad at reporting reactions, but exemptions to rabies vaccination and drug safety require documentation. 10. Don t vaccinate within a week of travel. Pets experiencing reactions on route can die for lack of immediate medical assistance. (Find a list of emergency clinics by area at vetsnearyou.com/ml2.?v= &u=0880f1aac5ef9ba F807184B&gclid=CKOmmcXvm6QCFQY-bAodawLaEg (I cannot guarantee the clinics expertise, but at least this is a place to start.) 11. Keep copies of vaccination records and titer tests in your car(s) and license tags on your dog s collar or harness. Otherwise, you may be forced to re-vaccinate if your pet bites someone, runs away and is taken to a shelter or if you have to board your pet unexpectedly. 12. Do not administer a rabies vaccine yourself. It will not satisfy legal requirements and you ll have to have a vet vaccinate again. You will also be unprepared to deal with a potentially life-threatening reaction. Similarly, a vet s office may likely be a safer place to get the vaccine than a mobile clinic. Conclusion: I am not telling you to make any changes in your current practice - whatever that is. I am not suggesting that you give or not give vaccinations - only that you do the research and make up your own mind after you have considered all the facts. My feeling is that there is such a high rate of dogs getting cancer that there have to be many, many contributing causes. (50% of Golden Retrievers die of cancer - that is crazy!) If there is anything I can do to try to minimize the risk to my dogs, I want to do it. Resources: Clean Run Magazine article about vaccines - article can be found at 5 Continued on next page

8 AtmosKlear A product review by Kathi Balaban My German Shepherd dog, Zeus, and I were walking in the northern woods in early dusk a couple of weeks ago. Before we saw it, we surprised a skunk that was rooting some grubs up in an open field. All I saw was a tail straight up in the air and my dog was backing up. The skunk took off and ran into a wood pile. Anyone that has ever had a dog that was sprayed by a skunk knows the awful stench that can be left behind in every room, garage, car and/or dog pen for days. We immediately washed him with an oil/grease cutting dish soap but the stench still remained. I went on line to find a remedy and also called my vet. I was told to mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide and some dish soap. I had done that previously with another German Shepherd dog and found that the solution was rather drying to the skin and didn t get all of the scent out. For years, I had been using a product called AtmosKlear to remove odors in and around my home. It is all natural, non-toxic and biodegradable and can be purchased at an Ace Hardware store. I contacted the company and asked if it can be used to remove skunk scent and was told to just pour it on where the skunk scent was. I was told to wash the dog with an oil/grease cutting soap, such as Dawn and/or Ivory dish soap first to remove as much oil as I could and then to pour the AtmosKlear on the source of the smell and then rinse it off. Because I had already washed the dog, I found a spot that still really stunk on his head and sprayed some on, rubbed it down into the fur and then bent over to smell him. The stench was gone! The product must touch the source to remove the odor. I now have a gallon of AtmosKlear in our log home in northern Minnesota for potential future incidents, as this is the third dog and fifth incident of skunk spray over the last 20 years. In addition, the skunk s wood pile in the field has hence been removed. The State Fair is coming up Sept 2! Who wants to chair this event? 8
