3 Ed Rucker Gosh! Can we get the season going once and for all? You bet we can because we are headed up North this month. So get the doggies tuned up and dust off that camping gear. Can you say Quail Invitational! AFTCA Winona, AZ Trial I was very pleased to see a great turnout of AZPDC members at the High Country Bird Dog AFCTA trial in Winona, Arizona. What was more impressive is how our club members fared in the competition. Way to go Tommy Chapa, Todd Henderson, Todd Fielitz and Jim Schroeder. By the way, AZPDC members took ALL of the Amateur Walking Shooting Dog placements. Now that s a statement of the quality of dogs in our club!! Annual Banquet You should have all received an with the RSVP form for the banquet. If not, please let me or any other board member/officer know and we will get you that quickly. I have to say we stepped up the banquet last year and I believe it will be even better this year. So signup early and lets have some fun. We will have a kid s jumper for children eight and under and other activities for the youth. Again, back by popular demand is Cedric s face painting. We will also have raffles for the youth and the wonderful women of the club. We have some REALLY cool raffle, silent auction and live auction items this year. Remember, most of these items are donated. If you have some items to donate please get with Jim Schroeder or Tom Wheeling and we will coordinate a pickup or handoff. As for the table fare, it will be the same as last year and I can say, from what I heard, was top notch. So get those extra walking or running miles in now because we should have a bunch of fixings. We will have beverages this year away from the serving bar. If you have been selling shotgun raffle tickets, please get with Brent Jacobs and get the money and tickets turned in. We need to start get a grasp on this raffle so it goes smoothly. This banquet is really important to AZPDC. It is the one time of year we elect officers that represents you as a member for club business and activities. Your vote counts! It also is a time we get to reward our members who have excelled with their training and their dogs performances throughout the prior trial season. If anything please be there to give a hand and congratulate these members. Their accomplishments are to be commended. The fact that they will be awarded means they really accomplished a huge milestone. And it just another good reason to hang out with your friends and people who share the same passion and enthusiasm as you do. In closing, I want to say I miss you all and hope to see you soon. So be safe and let s get these dogs fired up for the season. Sincerely, President

6 Tom Wheeling The Big One Okay guys and dolls, we re about one week out from the best club event of the year (excepting those events that Sparky wins anything)! You ve already received a couple s regarding the festivities, but let me take this last opportunity to whet your appetite by describing what s in store for those who attend, and make those that can t attend feel really, really bad. In keeping with the time-honored tradition (that we started last year), the Master of Ceremonies this year will be another active and familiar face in the club...todd Fielitz. He did such a good job as auctioneer last year, we have decided to let the Peter Principle* take effect. The void that his promotion leaves in the auctioneer spot will be more than amply filled, however, by maybe the best salesman I know...ed Rucker. The food is going to be catered by the Obama administration. We will be eating The Rich, so come hungry. For those who don t think that makes sense, we ll have ribs, chicken, brisket, hot dogs, cole slaw, potato salad, brownies, etc. Our raffles are going to be epic, in the parlance of today s youth. I mean better than buying a car at Crazy Eddie s used lot. You want shotguns...we got shotguns. You want rifles...we got rifles. You want pistols...we got pistols. You want bombs...we got shotguns. Kiddies raffles, Ladies raffles, Rabble raffles. We got it all. Will there be activities, you ask? Answer: That s the silliest question I ve ever heard!! We ll have outdoor activities, indoor activities, face painting by the Artist formerly known as Cedric, and more. All for only $15. Why, that s just plain embarrassing! You should feel guilty about that price. And if you do, we could still use a little help. If you would like to pitch in with some (e.g. manning a raffle table for an hour, laying out auction items, etc.) please show up by 3:00 and we ll put you to work. me if I can count on you. Thanks. Tom Wheeling P.S. If you haven t sent me an RSVP, do it now; even if it s after the 10th. Send to: Tom@wheelingmedical.com *The Peter Principle dictates that people get promoted in organizations to the level of their incompetency! 7 High Country Bird Dog Club AFTCA Trial Winona, Arizona The trial and weekend overall was great. And, as I assumed would happen, the AZPDC representation was very strong. Congratulations to all of you! Following is a draft of the article that will be published in the American Field. Enjoy. The AFTCA Region 12 closed with the third annual High Country Bird Dog Club Spring trial held on the Walking Cane Ranch in Winona, Arizona. Unlike years past, the wind did not have a negative impact on the trial in anyway. The entries, support volunteers and judging were strong, the dogs were competitive and the food was great! Ranging in elevation from 5,000 to 7,000 feet above sea level, the Walking Cane Ranch is vast, offering endless objectives, terrain and lines to run, all suited well for field trialing. The trial took place on a one hour continuous course this year. Temperatures for the event dipped into the low 20s overnight and warmed to nearly 60 degrees in the daytime. Entries were strong and exceeded 60 dogs prior to a handful of scratches. The final number of dogs running was 55. All dogs and handlers were judged by some of the best in the business. Don Lee, Phil Casdorph, Jim Schultz, R.T. Henderson, Steve Johnson and John Beauchamp all did a great job in the saddle. As usual the trial was a success due to the many volunteers that coordinated dogs, dog transportation, and dedicated, consistent bird planting. Without Aaron Howard, Quentin Britt and Stevie Casdorph, the dog wagons and coordination of braces would not have been possible. Another of many highlights was the consistency in birds on course and contact opportunities experienced by all running. Kim Esplin and her crew of bird planters did an exceptional job keeping the right number of birds at each station throughout the trial. The trial offered Open Shooting Dog, Open Derby, Amateur Walking Shooting Dog, Amateur All Age and Amateur Derby stakes. The quality of dogs and variation in breeds made for a competitive event regardless of the stake. In the Open shooting dog, there were 14 teams with 13 month old Senator s Chicken Hawk, pointer male, out National Champion Miller s Line taking the blue. Hawk ran as big as the cover would allow and had one find that was preceded by a far reaching cast. Hawk held point for many minutes until his handler, R.T. Henderson, rode to his partner, dismounted, flushed and fired. All was in order as Hawk did not move. Tekoa Mountain Phoenix, or Remy as she is called, took second. Remy, a classy and well known female setter owned by Robert Sexton of Chandler, Arizona is no stranger to Region 12. Frequently in the action, Remy ran an animated and tough to beat race. Rounding out the top three was Steve Rutkowski with Caladen s All Business, a pointer female that, when on point, is all business. The Open Derby saw 11 entries. Pointers, English Setters and German Shorthairs ran the race. Again, Senator s Chicken Hawk was crowned the top dog. Application, run and broke finds helped Hawk rise above his competition. Sean Slawson, a true asset to Region 12, and Collateral Damage, setter male, placed second in the Open Derby. Sean and Jack presented the judges with a front going race, multiple finds and bird work exemplified in that of broke dog stakes. Lindley s Lucky Lady (Tana) and owner, handler Steve Johnson took the honors of placing third. Tana, pointer female, a light footed and efficient running little machine, have been in the hunt for Region 12 Derby Dog of The Year all season. And, as proved in trials past, they are a team to keep an eye on in the future. The Arizona Pointing Dog Club (AZPDC) not only supported our trial with 25 entries, they took home four of the 13 placements on the weekend. The AZPDC members and dogs helped make this trial in more ways than one. The quality of membership and dogs, general attitude of everyone involved and the family focused structure of the club was infectious. The AZPDC and its members took home all three placements in the Amateur Walking Shooting Dog stake. Tommy Chapa and Chapa s Duke of York ran an uncontested race. Both Tommy and Duke were excited and a true enjoyment to judge. My assumption is that Tommy s love of pointing dogs has diversified; we welcome you aboard Tommy. Todd Fielitz of Pointer Ranch in Casa Grande, Arizona placed second in the Amateur Walking Shooting Dog competition. Todd, with Mama s Clown Bubba, male GSP, brought a game that is synonymous with Todd s training regimen, level of competition and tenacity. Taking third place was Jim Schroeder. It was my personal pleasure in placing Jim Schroeder s Walsh s Zeke and Find, female GSP, in the stake. Jim, not knowing much about AFTCA, was initially apprehensive about experiencing the walking stake. But, both he and his dogs proved to be true competitors in any walking venue.
8 The Amateur All Age experienced numerous, unexpected breakdowns. A top dog was recognized with blue and all other placements were withheld. Salvatore Satallante of Williams, Arizona and Kate topped the competition. Kate, pointer female, ran a true All Age race and she and Sal were deserving of being declared the top team. Sal, his wife Nancy and their dogs are always a warm and welcome addition to any trial they attend. In fact, Region 12 will experience a true loss if they move to Nevada as has been communicated to our group. If in fact your move takes place, Sal and Nancy, we will miss you both. Rounding out the trial was the Amateur Derby. As was the case in the Amateur Walking Shooting Dog stake, Tommy Chapa and Chapa s Duke of York offered the judges with a simple task in naming a winner. Followed by Chapa was Harold Goodman and High Lonesome Kodi, a young, male English setter derby out of Sexton s Remy. Kodi, similar to his Dam, ran an animated race full of setter class. Completing the competition was Satallante and Annie. Goodman and Satallante both accomplished the goal of receiving placements for qualification purposes. Saturday evening was an occasion to be remembered, especially for Harold Goodman. Harold s ticket was pulled from the hat as the winner of a donated Tri-Tronics expandable Pro 500 collar. Without Tri-Tronics and the many other sponsors we read about week in and week out in the Field, our sport would not be at the level it is. The High Country Bird Dog Club, Region 12 and all of our field trial friends and families would like to personally thank Tri-Tronics for their donation and support of field trialing. In closing, The High Country Bird Dog Club and 2010 Winona trial would not have been possible if it were not for the passion and graciousness of Jim and Janet Schultz. A true competitor, winning in 9 states with over 125 wins and placements, 4 championships, 4 runners up championships and a National Championship, Jim Schultz has given to the sport unselfishly. Choosing not to run one of his many Champions this weekend was a choice Jim made in an effort to host a fabulous trial, which he did. Assisting Jim in making the weekend great was his wife Janet. Not only did Janet bring hot gourmet meals and custom desserts to the grounds each day for lunch, she brought a box full of her personal cookbooks straight from the publisher as a gift to anyone who wanted one. On behalf of Region 12 and the love of sport, I would like to thank both Jim and Janet for their dedication to what we do.
