Brought to you by the Newfoundland Club of Northern California Calendar Guests are welcome at general meetings and all other events! Water Seminar Saturday, June 4, 2016 Folsom Lake, Auburn Contact: Cathy Sayre & Carol Chew Club Picnic and Board/General Meeting Saturday June 18, 2016 Board 10am/General 12pm NCNC members and their dogs have been busy. First, George (Jackson & Latchaw) earned multiple Best of Breed wins. Rocco (Maria Fernandez) finished his conformation championship. That also finished requirements for Register of Merit (ROM) titles for his mother Rose (Littleford & Pearson) and grandmother Mae (Julia Baker). See also the draft tests, below, and show results elsewhere in the Newfs Paper. Congratulations to all! NCNC hosted two Draft Tests (one DD/TDD and one DDX/TDDX) on April 2-3, 2016, at Lagoon Valley. On the first day, there were two entrants (two others entered but withdrew), and both qualified. (100% success!) Congratulations to Khali (Gina Bonnell) on a new DD title, and to Ready (John Pearson) on his third requalification (DD3). On Sunday, six entrants attempted the new and difficult Advanced Draft Test. When the dust had cleared, Ramble (Cherrie Brown) had earned the coveted DDX title. Congratulations to all! Thanks are also due to Test Chair Laura Gallagher and her Test Committee, to Chief Stewards Lynne Baker & Dawn Druge and their intrepid crews, and to the friendly and knowledgeable judges, Rick Humphreys and Denise Castonguay. Thank you all! Two weeks after the NCNC Draft Tests, Lori and I

Lori flew to Colorado for two planned days testing DD/TDD and DDX/TDDX for HCNC. Unfortunately, the test site got over a foot of snow that weekend! The Saturday tests took place (one DD re-qualifier) due to great efforts by the test committee and judges, but the Sunday tests were canceled. Meanwhile, in sunny Los Angeles, I judged with Judi Adler DD/TDD and DDX/TDDX tests both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Crew (Kathy Mitchell) earned a new DD title, and Harley (David Valenzuela) requalified for the second time (DD2). On Sunday, Light (Erin Zimmer) earned her coveted DDX title at the age of nearly ten. Congratulations! We are once again planning a club picnic at the San Leandro Marina Park. This has been a very popular club meeting & event the last two years. Being right next to the bay, the weather has been very mild. In addition to the delicious food, including bar-b-que meats and potluck side dishes, we will again have various activities for you and your Newfs to enjoy. Thank you Patrick Benshoof and Lisa Lee for volunteering to co-chair this event. I understand they are cooking up lots of fun activities! Please mark your calendar for Saturday, June 18, 2016, and keep that date open! An RSVP form is available on the NCNC website (go to Upcoming Events), and more information will follow in the News Paper. Kevin updated us on the status of the show at the January club meeting. (See the meeting minutes in the Newfs Paper.) 8 8 of 17 5/4/2016 9:52 AM Test Reporter: Cherrie Brown DRAFT TEST (DD), 4/2/16 Because 2015 was such a successful year for our draft dogs, we had only four entries in our draft test and two of them dropped out before the test leaving just two to be tested by our judges, Denise Castonguay and Dawn Druge. The weather was perfect and fortunately the park people had mowed the grass about a week before the test so test conditions were good. The Basic Control, Harnessing & Hitching, Maneuvering and Freight Load exercises passed without incident except for a couple of bicyclists racing across the maneuvering course at one point without affecting the performance of the dog working. The freight haul crossed the dry creek, took the trail along the creek and then circled back past the maneuvering area before passing around a meadow and across a wash. Near the half way point we had to hold up for a large group of bicyclists (about 50) that swarmed past and across the trail. However, both Khali and Ready dealt with the distraction like professionals and passed the test with flying colors. Test Chair Laura Gallagher was assisted by secretary Cherrie Brown and third committee member John Pearson. The chief steward was Lynne Baker who assembled an eager crew of stewards, Connie Andronico, John Bonnell, Deanna & Wes Brills, Carol Chew, Cathy & Jerry Sayre, Marilyn Rhodes and Buzz & Patti Sondgroth. As usual for Lagoon Valley Kevin Gallagher was the site coordinator, Laura Gallagher took on multiple tasks including set-up, participants gifts, both AM hospitality and lunch sandwiches (with June Gibson) provided hospitality for our out-of-area judge and arranged for the pre-test dinners. Cathy Sayre provided the trophy medallions, Patti Sondgroth provided judge s gifts, and our photographer was Robin Welter. 10 10 of 17 5/4/2016 9:52 AM ADVANCED DRAFT TEST (DDX) (4/3/16) We had six entries for our second ever advanced draft test (Twinkle, Jeter, Ramble, Light, Ready and Sterling) and what a group of over-achievers it was! Among the six there were 61 AKC and NCA titles not counting multiple re-qualifications, five VN s (versatile Newfoundland award) and two WA s (working achievement award). The ages of the dogs entered ranged from the 10 and 11-year-old veteran ladies (these were the WA s) to the 4-year-young boy. Because the course ranged up and down the long, narrow field at Lagoon Valley, spectators were able to follow along in the parking lot and watch the maneuvers. All entries did well, but the very difficult driven figure 8 was the undoing for five of them. For Twinkle and Jeter this was the only maneuver failed. (Both Jeter and Light have passed this exercise in the past though, so I know it is only a matter of time before they earn their DDX s). In addition one entry each crossed a line and failed the 90 degree right turn, the back through 90 degree turn and the U-turn. None of the entries failed more than two maneuvers. We had to pause a few times to let bicycles cross one end of the course but this did not prove to be a problem for any of our experienced competitors. At the end of the day Ramble put it all together to become the first DDX Newf on the U.S. West Coast. Our judges were Denise Castonguay and Rick Humphreys. Test chair Laura Gallagher was assisted by test secretary Cherrie Brown and third committee member John Pearson. Laura set up the fun and interesting maneuvering course with help from several other club members including (but not limited to) Kevin Gallagher, Patrick Benshoof, Steve Brown and Dawn Druge. Chief steward Dawn Druge kept the test moving with her crew of stewards, Patrick Benshoof, Kathy Bracisco, Laura Gallagher, June Gibson and Lisa Lee. Most of the other jobs were filled by the same people as for the DD test with the exception that Dawn Druge and Kathy Bracisco provided for the AM and lunch food (pizza). New DDX title VN GCh Tempest s Ramble On To Aukai, CD, RA, TD, WD1, WRD, DD4, TDD1, owned and handled by Cherrie Brown.

13 13 of 17 5/4/2016 9:52 AM By Marge and Walt Parsons Last April Bruin s life changed drastically when his owner, Susan Rouse, passed away. Bruin was an 8 year old big Newfy boy with some health problems. After Susan s death the coroner s office gave us two choices he d send Bruin to the animal shelter or we d have to provide for him. The choice was obvious. Bruin had lived next door to us for several years and knew our dogs since they d come to his house for grooming. So Bruin moved in with us. We had planned to down size to two dogs but Bruin needed a place to go so our household once again became a 3 dog family. The whole idea was that we d find a new home for Bruin in short order but that was not to be. Susan had left a list of people she had thought might want to take Bruin but not many people want to adopt a 8 year old Newfy. Also we didn t want to have Bruin move into a new foster home where he didn t know the people and their dogs. Although Bruin had not been turned over to Newfoundland Health and Rescue they helped us by seeing if people applying for a rescue Newf might be interested in taking the old boy. Susan had left a list of people who she thought might want to take Bruin but none of them worked out. So to make a long story short, 9 months later Bruin felt that he was in his forever home. In late January everything changed fast thanks to Donna and Rick Humphreys, and Bari Halperin. It seems that the Humphreys had sold a puppy to a family in Portola Valley that also had two older dogs,. By the time that the puppy had reached the age of two The two older dogs had passed away so the young Newf male was by himself and lonely. The people wanted to get an older Newfy as a companion for their young Newf. Donna and Bari immediately thought of Bruin and after seeing some pictures they wanted to meet Bruin. SO on January 16 th these people along with their 2 year old Newf came to visit Bruin at Larkey Park in Walnut Creek. (We wanted to be in neutral territory for the introduction.) The two dogs sniffed at each other and the tails started wagging. We all returned to our house where the dogs romped in the front yard. After discussing Bruin s various problems we all decided that it was the ideal situation for Bruin. Bari had had previously done a home check when they got the puppy from the Humphreys and she had thoroughly approved of the site. A couple of hours later when it was time to leave Bruin and his new buddy jumped into their car and left for Bruin s new

14 14 of 17 5/4/2016 9:52 AM home in Portola Valley. Since then we ve received reports and pictures of Bruin in his new home. The two dogs have become inseparable. When one dog leaves the room the other follows. We hear that there is a pond on the property that is wonderful for swimming. Buin s new owners are the type that when they take trips the dogs go with them. What more could an old Newfy gentleman want in life. Have a happy life in your new home Bruin. UPDATE: Since the above was written we hear that Bruin and his buddy have visited both Canada and Mexico. His groomer comes in weekly and his vet has his various ailments well under control. He gets a lot more exercise than what he got from a pair of octogenarians (us <grin>) We feel that Bruin is one lucky dog to be adopted into such a nice situation. Please let Dick Heym know of any new dogs, or any that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Also, if your address or changes, let us know so we can stay in touch! DickHeym@comcast.net
