6 6 Some Plants Tabled at the July Meeting 2013 Cattleya over 100mm was well contested, with the following being some of the stand-outs. Rlc. (Blc.) Burdekin Bells Mary AM/AOC presented a quite large mauve toned bloom, it s labellum having yellow eyes to the throat. A quality flower from this domestically awarded clone. Also tabled was another Rlc. Burdekin Bells clone with no varital name offered, its two blooms were also of very good form. Rlc.(Blc.) Good News No.1 carried a medium single sized semi-alba type bloom its white tepals presented a contrasting foil to the brightly coloured lip which had a light purple tone to the goffering of lip edge which was more extensive on the side-lobes frontal area; a purple wedge extended from its tip, tapering slightly to the base, which created yellow eyes. A flower of very good shape but unfortunately a spot, (probably weather induced) of discolouration to a ventral sepal would have disadvantaged it in judging. Rlc. (Blc.) Sylvia Fry Hamey had a single bloom of very good form, it was predominantly mauve with a dark tip to its lip. It is one of a number of clones from this particularly successful crossing that boast large blooms of excellent exhibition form. Rlc. (Blc.) Memoria Gordon Vallence had very well shaped pale lavender pink blooms with slightly overlapped petals which had nicely ruffled edges, the lips were light lavender mauve with yellow throat bases. This clone (grex actually) has Rlc. Sylvia Fry in its pedigree as does Rlc. Burdekin Bells. Rlc. (Pot.) Goldernell Burdekin had three predominantly lemon-yellow blooms that were blushed a pale, yet glossy, rosy-mauve tone over a paler base tone along their mid-rib region, mauve edged lips were tipped purple this tone extended as veining to base there of creating yellow eyes to side-lobe interiors. Choice blooms, even if not of as full form as some of its competition, that were still quite shapely. One of its parents, C. Horace, tends to impart pleasing shape; good, and indeed complex combinations of colour, should probably be given more consideration in judging than currently seems to be the standard. Paphiopedilum featured a Paph. Amanda Hill, this representative of the complex hybrid category carried a most shapely bloom on a medium length of spike. Due to the lights needing to be turned off for the speaker s presentation, I was forced to abandon recording it s flower colouration after just commencing to do so, and instead (fortunately) photographing same. The colours as I recall them under the fluorescent lights, although good, did seem a little dull, the image produced by the flash quite brought them to life. The bloom s predominantly white dorsal had a yellow toned basal region the lower half of which was covered with reddish-brown spots some of which formed into lines that extended upwards into an area of rosy-mauve spotting. This colour combination was framed by a white band around the entire edge. The petal s light mahogany tone had a glossy texture overlaid with darker tessellations, their tips being edged with a narrow band of yellow. The predominantly white ventral had a green vertical stripe to about 1/3 of its central surface; the yellowish pouch was brushed with a reddish mahogany tone while the staminode was yellow. Species Sympodial contained a number of specimen type plants and Dendrochilum propinquum with around forty short spiralled spikes carrying numerous straw coloured blooms was among them. The plant filled what appeared to be a 200mm pot. These smaller types of Dendrochilums can grow into showy specimen plants in a reasonably short number of years and don t rob the grower of much bench space. A Dendrochilum that is commented on quite frequently is D. wenzelii; so I will only say that there was a largish potfull of this species also tabled. What was known as Epi. polybonbon is now generally treated as a Dinema, although some latterday authorities regard it as an Encyclia including the RHS. There were two large exhibits, labelled as D. polybonbon tabled, one growing in a large terracotta saucer whose blooms appeared to be of better form than those of the larger exhibits; this one overfilled what appeared to be a nursery type plastic tray of app. 400mm x 600mm and, yes, covered in blooms. The flower colour was predominantly yellow with brown stripes on front of tepals extending from the base to over halfway along their lengths with the lips being white. Mediocalcar decorator was represented by two plants each of which were overflowing the edges of their respective recepticals, these being large pot saucers, one plastic the other terracotta, each appeared to be of around 300mm diameter. The bulbous, or vase-like appearance of the blooms is effected by the fusing of the sepal bases, this region being red their tips are yellow, the petal and lip tips are of like form and matching colour. A Bulbophyllum medusa carried two single spikes. I felt the overall flower length was a trifle shorter than others I ve encountered (which I must confess is not many) and the colour a little paler. Anyone familiar with Emily S. Siiegerist s book, Bulbophyllums and Their Allies, will know this species blooms are featured on the book s dust-cover and when looking at same felt the tabled plant would be midway, in colour, between the darker and albinestic forms displayed, it also had the spotting of the normal form, only paler in tone. I was confident a species tabled was a Restrepiella but could not recall the specific epithet (of what is a mono-typic genus) with only one name to come up with I was forced though to look at the label (some memory) and was reminded it was R. ophiocephala. I d read (or re-read) an entry about it some months ago when happening on to its particular page when checking something in another chapter of the book altogether. The book was Discovering New World Orchids the author, Steve Manning, is the holder of the (British) National Collection of Pleurothallidinae, this work was the result of his seeking information regarding the botanist, travellers (= collectors) and nurserymen, etc. historically involved with this subtribe and an apparent penchant for Masdevallias; other orchids and plants are also discussed. He explains how the genus Restrepiopsis lost six of its number to Restrepiopsis which was formed to accommodate them, leaving Restrepiopsis aphiocephala as the last man standing. He points out the variability of this species not only in colour but subtle differences in flower morphology and suggests it

7 Plants Tabled at the July Meeting 2013 continued might be in need of closer scrutiny if some form of splitting is not in order. Colour can range from dark red to yellow it s claimed; however the tabled plant was of red-mauve (or purple) tones quite dark, or was this due to the lightening? Also this plants sepals were not open (the dorsal not as upright) as those photographed. The plant growth resembles some of the Pleurothallis genus. One sentence in the book reads Restrepiella ophiocephala has wide open pouting petals, usually red, and viewed from the side, one can easily see why it has gained the nick name of the Mick Jagger of the Orchid World. A Coel. virescens carried three spikes each with five flowers, the blooms on one were pale cream these were perhaps freshly opened as the others were more yellow. Plant habit was not remarkedly rhizomatus with the distance between bulbs being around 30mm; some Coelogynes, and not necessarily the larger bulbed forms, can be of a distance in excess of 150mm. Miscellaneous featured two entries of Cym. Mini Dream Homeleigh, the plant with two spikes carried approximately sixteen blooms each with tepals reflecting slightly. The other presented nine spikes of about eighteen blooms each, this plant s flowers were more cupped than those of the other. A predominantly apple-green colour with some yellow to the lips in the pure colour vain. Novice Any Other Genus featured a Cym. Marilyn Levy Graham having an arched spike of ten dark red blooms whose lip tips were quite a deal darker. There was some yellow to the bases of the mid-lobes that went back into the throat and a thin pinkish toned edge to lip tips. Native Species had a Bulb. longiflorum tabled with two spikes, one of buds only and six blooms on the other, colour off-white, (the best I can offer), with purple spotting to the dorsals. Not a plant I m familiar with, so did some checking and the syn. B. umbellatum rang a distinct bell, but no definite recall. A variegated form of Pterostylis carta was also presented, there were a number of plants to the pot but only two were flowering the single flowered spike sheaths showed the variegated effect of the white leaf margination, while the flower base tone was white; one of the blooms had green striping to the hooded dorsal whereas the other was brownish. I ve seen variegated Pterostylis at shows, etc. in England, also Den. speciosum and Den. kingianum. The Dendrobiums were on display by vendors, (Taiwanese if I recall correctly), and while some of the Dens. were not of what I would feel was good variegation, the Pterostylis would have been not far behind the very good example we had tabled.
