AGRA News Suffragette launches onto the path to Stardom By Michael Floyd for AGRA Suffragette races away with the Launching Pad (Pic Clint Anderson) Suffragette stamped herself as a potential star of the sport after sensationally winning the $210,000 group 2 Launching Pad by 10 lengths at Sandown Park last Thursday night. Trained by the husband and wife training team of Steve and Kerrie White, Suffragette was sent to the boxes as the $3.60 equal favourite after her dominant semi-final win. She and was quick to reward the punter s confidence after beginning cleanly from box 6 to lead clearly through the first turn. The field bunched behind her allowing Suffragette to establish a race winning break down the back straight and charge to the line to score in After I saw the box draw, I sat down and worked it out how I thought the race would be run the gods were smiling on us, said a delighted handler Steve White. It s been a beautiful week, haven t had any hiccups at all. I was always confident that if she jumped she d win. Suffragette burst on to the racing scene in October 2016 with a dazzling 12 length win on debut. By January she d already chalked up five wins (just one short of the six-win limit for the series) but a minor injury allowed White to switch his focus on to the $400,000 series. It s a good feeling because we set her for the race. When she hurt herself I said to her owner Geoff Slatttery, we ve got eight weeks, we ll set her for the Launching Pad. We ve been building up her race fitness and I said that she d peak on race night. Last week she went and I thought I hope she hasn t peaked, but look at her now, she wouldn t blow out a candle. White had been bullish about Suffragette s chances from the outset, even backing her at $201 prior to the series and again at $126 after she ran fourth in her heat. I was really confident with her, she s always been a superstar. She broke in at Billy McMahon s and he rang me and said she s a superstar, she s a freak that s his words he said she s a freak. The win was the biggest for White since making the move from New South Wales to Victoria in October 2015 and there may be more to come. At just 26 months of age, Suffragette has already won $178,000 in prize money and will now be set for the $145,000 group 1 Sapphire Crown to be run at Sandown Park in May a race White won twice with AGRA Hall Of Famer Paua To Burn in 2004 and Whether she won or lost tonight, the sky s the limit for her. After the winner the field finished in the following order 2nd Zipping Hooch ($13.90) 3rd He s Loaded ($8), 4th Shantui ($11.90), 5th Zipping Bronze ($7.80), 6th Zipping Daph ($3.60), 7th Oransay ($10.20) and Princes Pout ($8.50). Suffragette is a Black Bitch whelped February 2015 by SH Avatar from Ebby Miss (Head Bound x Senza Nome) she is raced by Geoff Slattery. She has raced 17 times for eight wins and seven placings. The $150,000 first prize for the Launching Pad took her stake earnings to $178,197. The Sandown Club introduced the DDC Launching Pad in The feature has quickly become a most popular event with conditions suiting the young up and coming stars, it is now one of the most unique events on the national calendar providing excellent prizemoney of a $213,500 final. With the success of the first year of the new concept in 2014 nominations numbers were extended this year and last to 96 entry tickets at $2000 each. The extra money was put back into the heats, semi -finals and final in a three - week series for the first time. The concept also for the second time included a consolation series which provided more distribution of prizemoney for the $2000 entry. The changes were well received and although a review will be held the changes have again elevated the race to another level. The race is sure to continue to grow in stature as time unfolds and will become a much sought after race for that level and class of lightly raced dogs. Previous winners have been: 2003 Bounty Lass, 2004 Legends, 2005 Traction Control, 2006 Path To Power, 2007, Boris Reigns, 2008 Teaman Titch, 2009 Shiver Inside, 2010 Arsonist, 2011 Easy Peasy, 2012 Five Paws, 2013 Tomac Bale, 2014 Wynburn Wizard, 2015 Usain I m Nutty and 2016 Buck Forty

AGRA News Striker Light wins Golden Easter Egg Thriller By Jeff Collerson GRNSW Website for AGRA Striker Light's blistering mid-race speed carried her into the final and was again the prevailing factor when she edged out Lagoon Jazzy in last Saturday night's $250,000-to-the-winner Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg final. Lagoon Jazzy, locally trained by Sharron Webster, was a $41 outsider but looked set to pull off the biggest upset in the Group 1 event's history when she raced to a clear early lead. But Striker Light (pictured, black rug), bred in NSW by Toby Weekes but owned by Melbourne journalist George Farrugia and her trainer, Brett Bravo, surged to the front in the middle stages. Striker Light ($3) led clearly for home before Lagoon Jazzy rallied in the straight to go down by a half head in 29.99, well outside Fernando Bale's race record of 29.48sec set in "She has always been able to bust them up in the middle stages, that is her big asset,'' Striker Light's trainer Brett Bravo said. Mack Tux jumped smartly from box one but was outpaced by Lagoon Jazzy and Lucky Chap in the run to the first turn, while favourite Up Hill Hill missed the start. Veteran Sydney trainer John Little took out the Easter Egg Consolation, the $25,000 to the winner The Ambrosoli with Black Hole Sun. Bred by Little from his former handy sprinter Chasing Diana, Black Hole Sun has been a fixture in big races over the past 12 months and deserved a group race win. Fortune was with Black Hole Sun last Saturday as he bungled the start before securing a miraculous rails run at the first turn after pacemaker Nangar Bear ran off the track and collided with Hugo Boss and Barking Bad. "We had a bit of luck tonight,'' quipped Little after the race. Chevy King gave trainer Christine Proctor a surprise second win in the Group 3 New Sensation Final, after she had landed the race two years ago with Lord Gee. Chevy King drew box seven and after trailing pacemaker Rohan Hill at box rise, he swept to the lead at the first turn to win easily. "I can't believe he has won,'' Proctor said. "Chevy King is desperate for an inside box. "He had his kennelmate Son Of Katie, a wide runner drawn on his left in box six, I thought they would bring each other unstuck.'' Blitzing Lass's win in the Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden final was charged with emotion. Trained by Jodie Van Enkhuyzen, Blitzing Lass is owned by Michael Brookes, whose father John passed away 18 months ago after breeding the greyhound. "Blitzing Lass is a daughter of dad's bitch Miss Blockbuster, who won 14 of 30 races,'' Michael Brookes said. "When Miss Blockbuster retired my father took the advice of her trainer John Chapman and mated her with Milldean Panther*, and Blitzing Lass is the result. "It's just a pity dad was not here to see Blitzing Lass win a good race like this.'' Striker Light is raced by George Farrugia and is trained by Brett Bravo, she is a Black bitch whelped March 2015 by Kc And All from Pretty Fancy (Brett Lee x Sweet Fancy). Striker Light has won 13 of her 20 starts and has been placed on three occasions and with the $250,000 first prize for the National Futurity it took her current stake earnings to $381,380. The Golden Easter Egg was first conducted in 1990 when won by the Jim Coleman trained Ultra Sense. The race quickly took pride of place in the Harbour city and is one of most sought after on the AGRA Group racing calendar and each year attracting the best sprinters racing in the country, all vying for not only the outstanding first prize but also the glory and their place in history as winners of the Egg. Previous winners are: 1990 Ultra Sense, 1991 Highly Blessed, 1992 Jessica Casey, 1993 Billy Binjang, 1994 Mancunian Girl, 1995 Malawi Law, 1996 Tenthill Doll, 1997 Bahama Image, 1998 Rapid Journey, 1999 Faithful Hawk, 2000 Stately Bird, 2001 Brett Lee, 2002 Carlisle Jack, 2003 Cyrus The Virus, 2004 Bogie Leigh, 2005 Paua To Burn, 2006 Edie Beuchamp, 2007 Slater, 2008 Blazing Token, 2009 Dana Beatrice, 2010 Cosmic Rumble, 2011 Radley Bale, 2012 Don t Knocka Him, 2013 Grigorieva Bale, 2014 Tonk, 2015 Fernando Bale and 2016 Moreira.

Trip To Eden s second Group 1 win in Association Cup By Kathrine Earnst Australian Racing Greyhound for AGRA Trip To Eden TRIP To Eden ($2.70) won the second group 1 of his career on Saturday night when scoring in the Group 1 Association Cup (720m) at Wentworth Park. The Seona Thompson-trained greyhound exploded from box three, rolling straight to the early lead over Group 1 Galaxy winner Bogie Bekim (box two). Slotting into third spot in the early stages was Allen Lottery (box seven), but past the post on the first occasion it was a race in two as Bogie Bekim ($3.20) tried valiantly to take ground off the leader throughout the race. However, despite the best efforts of Bogie Bekim, he was no match for Trip To Eden on the night, with the leader kicking home strongly to record a two and a half length triumph in Raced by Newcastle owner-breeder Steve Connor Trip To Eden, is a son of Connor's former top stayer Key To Eden, came from last to win his heat in so it was no surprise he cut that time back to 42.02sec when he jumped in front in Saturday's final. Obi Kenobi ($26) (box five) flashed home to grab third ahead of Miss Foxy Lee (box one). Trip To Eden has now won 18 of his 42 starts, including five of his past six appearances. The Victorian trained greyhound has now won close to $300,000 in prize money, having already won the Group 1 Super Stayers at The Meadows earlier this year. After the placed runners, the field finished in the following order 4th Miss Foxy Lee ($11), 5th Allen AGRA News Lottery ($16), 6th Ebby Ripper ($6), 7th My Boy Brodie ($41) and Gunnadoo Cove ($10). 21 BRED TO WIN Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances. MR. SCENTRIC (Black dog, December 2014 Nolen x Arleen Bale) Raced and trained at Sydenham by Cole Brett. Racing for only the second time when fourth from box eight, over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on April 16. Beaten 7.94 lengths in the race won by Aston Rioli (29.78) who started from box one. First start was a third over 425 metres at Bendigo on April 6, so it was a big step in class and distance to Sandown and he is sure to have benefited from that run. VANE POWER (Black dog, November 2014 Vee Man Vane x Gracia Bale) Raced and trained at Nyora by John Brown. Placed twice from four starts over 300 and 350 metres at Healesville before stepping up to 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on April 16. Came from box seven and had no luck before finishing sixth in the race won by Jack The Fipa (29.94). Now raced eight times for two placings but should benefit from more experience. RESPONDENT (Brindle dog, December 2014 SH Avatar* x Dellbrezie) Trained at Newcomb by Robert Tartaglia, for Martin Frankovic. Unplaced in only four runs, MEP, Cranbourne and Warrnambool before improved run over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on April 16. Started from box seven and finished third, beaten lengths in the race won by Gatwick (29.84), who won by 7.39 lengths. Began OK but just couldn t get across before was run right off the track at the catching pen. That was a good effort though and I ll be surprised if he doesn t continue to improve. 22 Looking Back Maddog down under. By Maddog McDermutt and Little Elsie. Reflections on Robert McKinnon s visit to Australia in November Reprinted from American Greyhound Review, Parrots, Spiders, Ibis, Travels With Jones. Just about every dog-related visit Little Elsie and I had, track or farm, on our Australian adventure, we dropped off a copy of the Iowa Greyhound Association magazine publication Travels With Jones. Little Elsie, Jones and I had put together Travels With Jones with stories about twelve Iowa farm visits, after our stint at the Iowa State Fair manning the Iowa Greyhound Association s booth, in the Varied Industries building, sandwiched between two great neighbors: Branson Missouri Tourism and the Iowa Better Business Bureau. In addition to the twelve farm stories, the magazine included a reprint of a Greyhound Review story about our first Iowa fair booth adventure, a screwy takeoff on Eugene Ionesco s The Bald Soprano. The magazine was an idea of Bev Yates, and the entire publication turned out to be a public relations thrust on the part of the Iowa Greyhound Association, with copies going to legislators, senators, governors, and such, department of agriculture folks, lobbyists, IGA members, plus more free copies handed out here and there as time went on and magazines lasted. The magazine attempted to point out that Greyhound racing was a big part of the state s agricultural overall picture, such as the economy of all kinds of offshoot industries, for example dog food, land, fencing, buildings, machinery, numbers of individuals employed, a peek, if you will, behind the metaphoric general public view of dog racing, that dog racing isn t just a 30 second eight dog burst around a track. Anyway I took the liberty of taking a few copies to Australia as curiosity items. I probably would have taken our dog Jones as well, except Australia s quarantines are unrealistically lengthy, if you ask me. And so our visit to Australia was Travels Without Jones. In Healesville, as we stood in the Matthew Clark shed, where Matthew keeps his active racers, Roger Clark, Matthew s uncle, Little Elsie and I, and Matthew, discussed matters of the universe, including dog racing in the states and dog racing in Australia, at which time I gave Matthew a copy of Travels With Jones. Roger, who had seen the issue earlier, said, I know Matthew will be absolutely wrapped in it. Absolutely outstanding publication, nothing like it has been done here, more s the pity. Fantastic photos. Everyone here I ve shown it to has been impressed and envious. Perhaps one day Maddog could spend a month here and put out something similar? Gosh. I shrugged. Sometimes you hate to say no. Roger said, Get a few more copies in the mail to me, and some idea of production costs, and I ll see what I can do by way of introducing it to the board of Greyhounds Australasia. I couldn t respond. My good eye continued to focus on a black spot on the shed wall. I had to ask, What is that? Spider, Matthew said, looking up from his reading. Alive? I asked. Dead. Fried from the heat. What is it? I asked. It looked an awful lot like a tarantula, if you ask me. Huntsman, Matthew said. I changed the subject. By the way Matthew, what is this blue thing we are leaning on? This blue thing we are leaning on is my three dog walking machine. It is the latest state of the art design in the dog business over here, costing nearly $3500 AU new. The dogs are on the machine daily for fifteen minutes. I thought about our dog s two mile walk every day, up and down a hill, sniff this, sniff that. I don t think he d think much of a walking machine, but you never know. Later, I would look up the Australian Huntsman spider. It sure looked tarantualistic at a distance to me. Matthew assured me that the Huntsman are harmless, although they often terrify people like me by jumping out from behind something such as a household gizmo or furniture. Just the name causes reflection. Hunts Man. Wonder where the spider got a name like that At this time I casually suggested we leave the shed.. Continued Page 23

Special Feature Maddog down under. Parrots, Spiders, Ibis, Travels With Jones. Continued Your arachnophobia is showing, Little Elsie said. I took another quick glance at the spider fried to the wall. It s really silly. The thing obviously was dead. Why then was I experiencing undue anxiety? I don t have arachnophobia, I said. Then why do you wear shoes when you take a shower in the basement at home? she wanted to know. Those are shower shoes, I countered. I was not going to admit it was because I once saw a Hobo Spider down there. Huntsman like to be found in cars, hiding behind sun visors or running across the dashboard, Roger said. Quaint, I said. Absolutely delightful. I d love to see the outside runs. I beat it for the door, the rest moseyed out of the shed where Matthew kept his racers. And a big spider fried to the wall. It stood to reason the spider had relatives. I noticed a bird at a bird feeder, just across the lawn. What a gorgeous bird! I said. What is it? It sure wasn t anything you see in the states. That s no sparrow, I said. Parrot, Matthew said. Parrot? King Parrot, Matthew said. The males are red and the females are mostly green. The males are able to be hand fed by the kids, but the females prove too shy! Typical! The males, the red parrots, they allow themselves to land on you and be hand fed. We usually have two at a time here. One knocks on the window to let the wife know if there is no seed out! Only parrots I ever saw in the wild, outside of the Kia in New Zealand, were in pet shops or zoos. They live here? They drop in from The Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary, just over there. Matthew pointed in some direction. East maybe. The Sanctuary is about a five minute drive. The Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary is very popular, and is visited by most international stars while on holiday in Oz. Prince Charles was here some years ago. Little Elsie clicked off several pictures of the beautiful birds. Then Roger and I went to work with our cameras. I noticed two stork looking birds striding by, like they owned the place, picking at the grass. Here might be somebody who helped keep the Huntsman population down. Who might we have here? I asked. Those big white birds are Ibis. We call them tip turkeys. They are pests! They crap everywhere and are generally scavengers! They nest at the sanctuary and in treetops near us! I bet maybe they eat spiders? The Ibis will eat just about anything! Matthew said. I think I like Ibis. We do have a lot of Huntsmen, Matthew said, due to the many trees around us. The birds, owls in particular, feed off them. How about kangaroos, I said. Any kangaroos hang around here? We have wild kangaroos that come to the front of our property, Matthew said. With the current drought, they are heading closer to the houses in search of food and water. Kangaroos suck moisture out of bush leaves and drink in mountain streams. The lake/dam we get our water supply from is heavily fortified and protected. So, they come down here. Might we see one today? I asked. Roos are to some point nocturnal. They are visible in the mornings till about 9 am and then are not seen till nearly dusk. They can be of varying sizes, some up to 7 feet tall standing upright. Kangaroos cannot legally be farmed in the state of Victoria, however. Kangaroo meat is used sometimes in the diet, sourced from the state of South Australia. Matthew had earlier said that he was a qualified butcher and managed a meat department for a large supermarket chain. You obviously know what you re talking about, I said. Matthew said, Roo meat is VERY lean and can give the dogs the runs! We walked across the lawn and a pup stood up for a pat. How old is that pup? I asked. Ten months. I blinked. Little Elsie gave me the fish eye. Are you sure? That s the biggest ten month old Greyhound puppy I ever saw. Matthew headed down the fence line. The big pup jumped up and down, his head bobbing higher than the fence. We took pictures. Continued Page

Maddog down under. Parrots, Spiders, Ibis, Travels With Jones. Continued Special Feature The other one, Matthew said, the jumper, took a while to educate. He is now spelling, and we are hoping for more improvement with maturity. I had to wonder if the dog could run like he could jump. If so, Matthew had a winner. Matthew said, He is by No Intent x Lady Manager. I bred the litter, and still have the mother. Her first litter by Boomeroo threw a handy little dog called Headlines. Time to head off for our night at The Meadows, Roger announced. At the car we met Matthew s wife Elisa and their two children, Brad and Jason, who we had met earlier at the races. I opened the car door, eyeballed the dash board and seat, patted it all around, then got in, shut the door, smiled, waved, and Roger had us on our way down the road (this man drives on the wrong side of the road, even on a dirt road!) headed for a night at The Meadows. Postscript #1: Regarding Travels With Jones. Matthew said, in an , I showed the Iowa Greyhound Association magazine Travels With Jones to everyone, and they were very impressed with all the different set-ups, and the money some of those farms are turning over. I lent the book to my dad, who lent it to a mate who lives in Devon Meadows, where all the professional trainers reside. They have handed it around among themselves, and I hear they are quite impressed! It is still doing the rounds. Last time I heard it was being passed around by trainers in the south. Postscript #2: Regarding the two pups in the picture. Both pups have schooled. The red fawn dog has broken in City Class. Little Elsie s photo of the Australian Bush on the way to Healesville. 26 GRV News ICG: Breeding incentives crucial for industry confidence by Andrew Copley The Victorian Government s pending new Code of Practice, relationships between GRV and participants and a new prize money agenda were among the big-ticket items put on the discussion table at the most recent Industry Consultative Group (ICG) meeting. The underlying theme of the meeting was building industry confidence, and ICG members provided invaluable intelligence on a range of topics including the life cycle of greyhounds, grading, racing, swabbing, the role of clubs, capital works and veterinary training. With varying opinions around the table, suggestions such as the introduction of breeding incentive and reward schemes were seen as crucial to restoring industry confidence, as were announcements of upcoming infrastructure improvements at racetracks and increased communication from GRV including more face-to-face interaction with participants at clubs. The ICG advised that relationships between participants and GRV staff had significantly improved in recent months, thanks to a friendlier approach by welfare and investigations teams when visiting greyhound properties. ICG members also suggested GRV staff would benefit from being educated about greyhound welfare and trainer needs to assist them in having more practical expectations around swabbing. One ICG member said she regularly heard complaints from participants along the lines that they have never been subjected to such strict compliance from GRV. She added that participants should be thankful that this is the case. With regard to the State Government s pending new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds which will replace the previous Government s existing Code of Practice for the Operation of Greyhound Establishments one ICG member said that when it comes to compliance there would always be resistance. The ICG highlighted that the new Code, which GRV understands will soon be released for public consultation, has seen participants raise concerns that they won t be able to comply with the possibility of increasing infrastructure requirements to their properties. The attendees also added that support from GRV will be crucial to keeping people in the sport. The ICG also provided valuable feedback on a proposed new prize money structure, which is aimed at spreading money more evenly across the board. WHAT IS THE ICG? In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every six weeks to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV s Board for consideration. The ICG panel currently includes Judith Bornstein (Chair), Dr Barbara Backhoy, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Peter Craig, Leeanne Crawford, Marg Long, Daniel Nugent and Sandra Reed, with several other positions currently in the process of being filled. 27 GRV News Greyhound Racing Victoria commemorates Anzac Day Congratulations Pat Ryan GREYHOUND Racing Victoria and its clubs will again show their support for the RSL and its local branches as Anzac Day fast approaches. For the second year in a row GRV will donate $10,000 to the RSL s Anzac Day Appeal while all clubs will make a $1000 donation to their local branch. Select clubs, including Sandown Park, Warragul, The Meadows, Geelong, Traralgon, Horsham and Ballarat will also host a function for RSL members to honour the anniversary. Last year, GRV hosted the Red Dog Run campaign which raised $12,000 for the Anzac Day Appeal. In addition to its financial contribution, GRV has also invited RSL volunteers to race meetings during the week of Anzac Day to sell badges and raise further funds. GRV and its clubs have also encouraged the RSL to use club facilities for meetings and other functions. GRV endeavours to continue its relationship with the RSL, and supports their role in assisting current and former service men and women, as well as their dependents. See below for a list of dates that clubs will host their local RSL members. Clubs which are not listed may not have a scheduled event, or details are still to be confirmed. (The Meadows and Warragul did so earlier this week) Geelong and Traralgon - Friday April 21 Sale Sunday April 23 Cranbourne Wednesday April 26 Horsham Wednesday April 26 Ballarat Thursday May 4 Chief judge Pat Ryan celebrates 40 years at Sandown Park this week. Pat s time at Sandown Park began back in 1976 when the fresh-faced 25 year old was in need for extra cash and approached a family friend, Pat Campbell, about gaining some part time work at the track. I was getting engaged in July and thought I might get a part time job so came here. Marg Scarlett (then secretary) interviewed me and I started the next week, said Ryan. Over the following decade, Pat became a fixture in the office, filling a number of roles including grading. He then progressed to the prices (oncourse bookmaker prices would be communicated by phone to and from other tracks), and would relieve as the bookmakers supervisor and as an assistant judge. He assumed the role as chief judge around 20 years ago. Since then, Pat has adjudicated over 16,500 races at Sandown Park, and proudly boasts a 100% strike rate. After 40 years at the club, does Pat envisage chalking up his half century? I ve got a few years in me yet. We ll see what happens, but I ll hang around for a little while. PAW NOTE: Pat is one of four current staff members with more than 40 years continuous employment at the club (kennel staff Graeme Wright, Phil Skerrett and Bob Cooper are the others), and there are 14 staff members with 10 years or more service.
