12 Accell Therapy is gaining popularity in greyhound recovery and performance, however many people do not realise the benefits of utilising this therapy with their breeding animals. Firstly though, a little bit of information maybe beneficial in explaining how the therapy works and the benefits in using it with your breeding stock.accell therapy is Australian owned and Australian made by CT Healthcare in Brisbane. It has a long history in human therapy spanning over 67 years. The therapy is used extensively in the older generations of our population for joint mobility, muscle issues and circulation problems.it is also widely used by major sporting clubs, Australian army, Australian Institute of sport and many more.this therapy has been tested and registered by the TGA as a Class 2a medical device. The benefits of this therapy include improving circulation and lymphatic drainage, relaxing muscles and improving nerve muscle communication, and Enhancing joint mobility and enabling a natural analgesic effect. This cycling vibration therapy travels very gently and very deeply through 4 feet of bone and 2 to 3 feet of tissue. This enables a very deeply penetrative benefit to all cells through muscles and joints to receive these benefits. This creates momentum in the bloodflow which does not peak until approximately 5 to 8 hours post treatment, giving ongoing benefits well after the therapy session has been completed. Once it has peaked, the benefits will slowly drop back over the following 24 to 48 hours so regular daily sessions are most beneficial. There are many benefits in relation to breeding that can be gained from using AccellTherapy. When a bitch is cycling the benefits of increasing the circulation and lymphatic drainage enhance the natural efficiency of all systems in the body and thereby improving hormone levels and regularity in cycling and all facets of the reproductive system function. We have found that many bitches that are proving difficult becoming pregnant, suddenly become more balanced and able to be impregnated. And additional benefit that is derived from the body working more efficiently and having higher levels of oxygen and nutrients supply through greater blood flow, is the health and well-being of the beach during the pregnancy term. Her ability to feed the foetus during the pregnancy is greatly improved her to her higher levels of health and well-being, making the gestation much more supported by her body. These benefits flow Accell Therapy through to the quality of the milk the bitch produces, to feed after whelping. Anxiety can be an issue leading up to whelping and the Tranquillsage setting on the therapy can be very calming at this time. It lowers the alpha rhythms in the brain to resting levels, thereby calming the bitch naturally. In the event of an Cesarean section being necessary, Accell therapy can be used to generate faster recovery times for the bitch and improve internal circulation and thereby internal warmth of the pups. This reduces the reliance upon heat mats for pups.the Tranquillsage setting can also be used for the ongoing recovery of the bitch whilst feeding to keep her calm and relaxed during this time. We all know how much benefit a calm mother is for raising young. However, it's not all about the girls. You can look after your dog using Accell also The same benefits from improving circulation and lymphatic drainage, flows through to sperm motility and quality from enhanced health and well-being and improved nutrients and oxygen levels. Any muscle soreness or back issues that the dog makes experience during mating can be alleviated and recovered using the therapy to best effect There is a wonderful opportunity to improve the overall quality of your breeding program using this Australian made therapy and dogs can be treated using a therapy mat without needing to sit with each animal during treatment. Due to the depth of therapy penetration through 4 feet of bone and 2 feet of tissue, simply placing a crate on top of the mat will allow transmission of the therapy through this structure to the dog. It works a bit like a conductor. This lets you get on with your jobs while your dog is receiving premium care. It also protects your medical equipment from a chewer or any damage. Looks a likely type and based on that second run he won t be long recording his first win. 24 Letters to the editor THE MYSTERY OF BREEDING DOWNTURNS The curious thing about greyhound breeding is that almost everybody has got the numbers wrong. They may be influenced by quickie comments on blogs, rather than by national trends which is really the only place to go. At the moment, the latest national figures are for 2015, which is pretty tardy. Only Victorian information is shown for 2016 on the Greyhounds Australasia website. What we do know is that there has been a national trend downwards for the last decade not huge but steady. It is reflected in both litters registered and names allocated. Such a long term change can be attributed mainly to economic factors. However, today s gloomy predictions may well be right if Victoria is any guide. The state s 634 litters in 2016 represent the lowest in recent history. For pups named (3,719), ten of the last fourteen years have been busier. Even so, in both 2015 and 2016, Victoria had over 100,000 starters in more than 13,000 races, an average of 7.5 per race. But 2017 is not promising. Just last week, 64 races did not manage a full field, including a whopping 28 at the four metro meetings. Other states have similar problems. So nominations are not matching the supply of races and scratchings are alarmingly high. That s a concern for two reasons. First, small fields affect betting turnover, thereby reducing eventual income for state administrations. Secondly, it poses questions about the handling of what is arguably the industry s biggest problem providing outlets for the maximum number of dogs and so reducing the need for euthanasia. Why are more dogs not racing when space is available? What to do? No doubt there has been furious activity in looking for new homes for retired dogs. That s good and it warrants pushing, but it is not going to have a huge impact on overall numbers. Neither will the other theoretical solution fixing alleged over-breeding. Apart from the fact that it is a myth which has been promoted by official reviewers and also by some state administrators (all without properly studying the subject), any mandated or voluntary reductions would have only a modest effect on the euthanasia question. Significant numbers would still remain. And more promotion of low class racing Tier 3, Class C, Country, etc. is not going to accommodate dogs which refuse to chase or are very slow. The industry is between a rock and hard place because it has never established its right to dispose of unrequired dogs, despite state laws allowing it. Strangely, the community does not have a problem with the disposal of other dog breeds, horses, cats or whatever. That occurs Letters routinely at the RSPCA, council pounds, abattoirs, puppy farms or in the local creek. At the extreme end, a few people believe dogs or at least greyhounds should get the same treatment as humans. Well, we understand the principle but how far can you go? Indeed, one respondent to the Victorian Agriculture Department s proposals indicated he was being asked to provide his dogs with better facilities than his children enjoyed. That situation will not be altered in the short term as anti-racing types have got hold of it and will keep wringing its neck, so to speak. Reversing the trend demands sophisticated public relations efforts and quite a lot of money over several years, preferably on a coordinated national basis. Unfortunately, it comes at a time when finances are at risk as governments impose tighter, more costly and probably unnecessary regulations. It s Catch 22. Only one other solution offers any potential, and it has two arms: the product ie the quality of the average race has to be improved, and a massive marketing effort mounted to educate new or existing customers. We must earn more money per race even if, or when, race numbers are reduced. Only then could the industry fund more stringent regulations and cater better for unrequired stock. The do nothing option could see the industry fade away. Everyone from trainers to bureaucrats would lose their jobs while thousands of willing racers would have no purpose in life. A by-product is that it also risks the future of the breed. The immediate task will be to watch what happens in NSW as new rules bite, more people are put on the state payroll, costs go up and the authority is run by Morris Iemma, a good bloke but with no experience running a big business. Sorry to be so negative, but all those factors suggest the local industry in NSW is on a slippery slope perhaps as then-premier Baird intended. Innovative reforms are needed but the inclination to bring them about is not visible. Particularly when the new Racing Minister s record shows he voted in favour of the Baird-Grant ban on racing. Its later reversal had nothing to do with the worth of the industry only with political costs. Or, as economist Henry Ergas pointed out in The Australian (12 Aug) when talking about rising electricity prices, Fiddling at the edges cannot undo this mess. Rather, what is needed is a drastic change in course. And there is no mystery about the steps that should be taken. Bruce Teague Victorian Greyhound Weekly approached GRV, CEO, Alan Clayton for a comment on this letter, but has not received a reply at this time.

26 Nostalgia If you have a Nostalgia contribution to editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au This week we continue our look back at Victoria s leading metropolitan sires over the past 40 years, with the 2012 Victorian Metropolitan Sires List

27 Rhonda Remembers New South Wales greyhound enthusiast Rhonda Singleton became involved with greyhounds in 2009 as a owner and racing them. Nostalgia E A R L Y E D U C A T I O N $85 Prevention is better than cure, right? With breeding numbers down by around 60%, and an estimated 30-40% of pups not being named, I would like to start a new service - early education. I'd like to see this become my main, if not only service. I feel it's a critical step our industry has neglected for too long, and with the poor percentages above, its important we become more efficient with what we breed. I'll provide details in a day or so, but basically this program is for 3-9 month old pups, with a minimum of 12 weeks to gain real benefit from the intense one-on-one education. But longer the better! There will be 6 stages of which your pup will go through, all designed to ensure your greyhound is a well-rounded, forward, confident and keen chaser, with his/her prey-drive fully unlocked! They'll still get all the standard rearing, but will also get exposed to the kennel life as well as lots of bullring, box and drag lure work. For older pups, at stages 4, 5, and 6, your hound will be a junior race dog, they'll even compete against another pup behind the drag and on the clock, so that'll be great for syndications to keep clients excited! With early and consistent positive reinforcement, I can safely and confidently offer a full refund on the extra service if (IF) your pup doesn't break-in. That's $15 per week refund, even if you use the full 40 weeks, or minimum 12 weeks. (*conditions apply). 30 History Special 1923 Waterloo Cup. With all roads leading to Longwood in just over a week s time for the 2017 Waterloo Cup, GRV s Andrew Copley looks back on the 1923 Waterloo Cup. the winner would receive 1,000. Reports indicated that betting on the result was prolific Waterloo Cup one for the ages Andrew Copley, GRV One of the most prestigious pieces of silverware in Victoria s greyhound racing history the 1923 Waterloo Cup has been generously donated to Greyhound Racing Victoria by Ross Dickie. The 1923 Waterloo Cup was held at Geelong and won by Unie (Achieved Una Verse), a brindle and white greyhound trained by Ross grandfather, the late Charles Dickie, of Bacchus Marsh. Unie s half sister, Vanity Verse, which was trained by Dr W. A. Stewart, was the runner-up, however, the greyhound was withdrawn from the final course because of injury, leaving Unie the winner. Ross, 79, supplied an extract of a newspaper article reporting on the 1923 Waterloo Cup: In beautiful weather, the greatest coursing event yet recorded in the history of the sport in Australasia was brought to a conclusion today before the largest attendance of visitors that has ever been seen at a coursing meeting. The two special trains from Melbourne were well patronised, and many interstate visitors were present, thus indicating that the Waterloo Cup of 1923 has created the greatest interest in all parts of Australia. This season the National Coursing Club decided to increase the entry fee from 6/6/ to 10/10/, and many thought the change would bring failure to the historic event. However, there was an unprecedented rush for nominations and about 140 applications were received two months before the closing date. The National Coursing Club called a meeting to alter the conditions of the Waterloo Cup of 1923 to extend the limit of entries from 64 dogs to 128 dogs. It was agreed Ross Dickie, grandson of the late Charles Dickie, with the 1923 Waterloo Cup.
