He is from an all winning litter of three named, which included Space Girl Tears and Tears Siam. Their dam, Tonto Tears, also produced winners from her February 2011 litter by Knocka Norris and has one named, Tears Some, from a July 2014 litter by Swift Fancy, who only raced twice. Space Star raced 39 times, for 25 wins and nine placings, with stake earnings of $453,900. He won the 2015 Group 1 Association Cup, 2015 Group 1 WA Galaxy, 2015 Group 1 Zoom Top, 2015 Group 2 Summer Distance Plate and the 2015 Group 3 Wentworth Park Gold Cup. He finished second in the 2014 Group 1 Bold Trease, second in the 2014 Group 1 Sale Cup, third in the 2015 Group1 Superstayers and was a finalist in the 2015 Group 1 Sandown Cup. He established track records, over 618 metres at Richmond, 35.00, 600 metres at Gosford, and 725 metres at The Meadows. His first mating was to the beautifully bred, proven producer, Zsa Zsa (December 2009 Flying Penske* x Classy Creek), whose dam is by Rapid Journey x Sheza Swifty (New Tears x Voodoo Lady). She is from her dam s second Flying Penske* litter, which included Czar, Eager To Go, Mimicking, Pepper Shot, Sails and Tiger Toes. Classy Creek s first Flying Penske* litter, whelped in March 2007, produced Mick s Mate, Nellie Noodles, Papas Pal, Pickle Mickle, Rebel Queen, Sand Burner, Sun Riot and Symmetry. She only has one other named offspring on file, Opal Creek, who was whelped in February 2012, by El Grand Senor. On the track, Zsa Zsa raced 48 times for the handy record of ten wins and 17 placings. Talking Breeding She won Three times over 515 metres at Gosford (30.26), where she also won twice over 400 metres (23.24), twice over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (30.44) and also over 515 metres at The Gardens (30.06), 400 metres at Maitland (22.80) and 407 metres at Grafton (23.32). She has seven named offspring on file from her first two litters. Her first litter, whelped in November 2013, by Magic Sprite, produced Fairy Footsteps, Pulse Rate and Stray Shot. Then her second litter, whelped in December 2014, by Barcia Bale, produced Red Rocket Sox, Starzsa Light and Starzsa Smiling. Space Star was destined for great things from the first time he stepped onto the racetrack, running a track record (35.00) over 618 metres at Richmond in March He did great things too, ran the record as a green gangly pup and was capable of running slashing early sectionals, could lead, but would also chase from last to first, giving top graders a start and a beating. Breaking track records is in his blood, with his sire, Bekim Bale, setting the Sandown 515 metres track record at and his dam s pedigree containing several other track record holders. The arrival of the pups from this mating will be eagerly awaited. 16 Coursing Club News Coursing 2017 South Australian News SA coursing dates until 30 June are listed below. The remaining dates for July September will follow once allocated. We start off our season by running 4-dog stakes which appeases the track enthusiasts who do not wish to put their dogs in an 8-dog stake as they don t believe they can run 3 times in the one day, even though it should be remembered that its only 2 dogs that have 3 runs, and this is certainly not a problem in Victoria. The 2017 coursing season got underway last Sunday, with a Catch on to Coursing meeting at Lang Lang, And continues this weekend with a similar meeting at Longwood. Longwood Coursing Club Trials every Sunday morning from am last ticket sold and Tuesdays by appointment with Gary Robinson Getting close to the start of the Coursing Calender, we have our "Catch on to Coursing" meeting on the 9th April, so once again I am looking for donations to use as prizes for our winners, as this meeting is a non prize money meeting, with dogs only having to course twice, 1 run in the morning and 1 after lunch. IF ANYONE CAN HELP with DONATIONS, we would be sooooo grateful, let me know what you have in mind, from rugs/mats/leads/products/ petrol vouchers, whatever???? good advertising opportunity, thanks in advance. Julie Stefanos, Secretary. Please note that the meeting scheduled for April 16 has been put back one week to 23 April, we suddenly woke up to the fact that this was Easter Sunday!!!! This means we will be coursing on 23 and 30 April, but as we are only running 4-dog events with only two runs for the final pair, this should not be a problem. 18 Coursing Fields 2017 Victorian Greyhound Weekly supports Coursing

Letters to the Editor Local Factors, Too Editor, IF you don t mind, there are really more answers to the dog shortage question than I offered last week. Last week I suggested some likely answers to a trainer s query about short fields in Victoria. They included several factors that were really national in nature what you might call the macro picture. Primarily, demand for spots has been outstripped by supply. Authorities eyes are bigger than their stomachs. Supposedly, more races equals more cash in the till but that is a risky policy and it can work only once. And, if you end up with short fields, it is a disincentive to punters interested in exotic bets and therefore reduces turnover. But there are local issues as well, and Victoria is unique in a couple of ways. Here are some micro factors. First, despite all the claims about overbreeding, Victoria persists with lots of races restricted to local dogs the Vic Bred plan. This overt discrimination has never been justified, no objective has ever been stated, no proof of value ever offered. Its only possible aim can be to encourage local breeding so it flies in the face of the official policy of reducing breeding, which is the new CEO s repeated mantra. Anyway, if you restrict access to races it can only increase the possibility of ending up with empty boxes. Second, the last few years have seen concerted attempts to encourage longer distance racing in both city and country. Cash bonuses are offered. These have generally failed because they are attempting to make a silk purse out of a sow s ear, as the saying goes. Not enough dogs want to run such distances and those that try are often dogs that can t hack it over shorter trips. They still paddle home. In any event, nearly all these events possess horrible bend starts which can never make punters happy. Disappointingly, in two cases (Bendigo and Warrnambool), the distances were reduced to create those bend starts. Very risky. As a result, many of these races run with short fields. Third, allied to the previous point, we are seeing what I would argue is a general decline in greyhound stamina in this country. As veteran commentator, the late Bill Pearson, once said, They are not as robust as they used to be. However, this is a deep subject which I will leave for another day. Meantime, it may be a factor in reducing field sizes. Fourth, although most meetings are drawn with a good complement of starters and reserves it is remarkable how often a starter and both reserves are scratched, thereby leaving an empty box or two. Why so? Do they all get injured between nomination and race day? Has the trainer nominated for another meeting which clashes with the first one? Did he get a better box in another race? I have no idea but it warrants a serious check. Fifth, following on from the previous point, it is noticeable how many dogs are asked to compete in races two, three or four days apart, thereby posing questions as to the fitness of the dog the second time around. For example, at last Saturday s Meadows meeting thirteen of the entered dogs were backing up after running at the same track on the previous Wednesday. Two were scratched, presumably due to injury, leaving eleven to run. Yes, I know the trainer knows best but I have my doubts about that. The repeat performance is often poor anyway. The above eleven dogs recorded one win, one second, one third and eight failures, mostly by 10 lengths or more. (The winning dog was having its 9th start in the last 28 days, so it must have an exceptional constitution). Similarly, interstate visitors often make up a sizeable proportion of scratchings. For example, seven dogs were scratched from the heats of the Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park last Saturday. Four of the seven came from Victoria, and two heats started with an empty box. The only motive for what I would call overracing has to be the desire to earn more money. Yet actual experience seldom shows that faith to be warranted, and obviously the risk of injury and scratching is higher. Each of these factors may not be huge in themselves yet they all add up. Remembering that the overall supply of races has been increasing over the years it is not a surprise that the number of empty boxes has been rising it is a national trend. Of course, there is another anomaly. Victoria has for years been the recipient of immigration from other states, mostly good dogs from NSW and Queensland. Even so, that has still not lessened the empty box problem that concerned the Victorian trainer. On the other hand, there is a fairly steady flow of performed dogs out of Victoria (and NSW) to both South Australia and West Australia, usually as they use up their grading advantage at home. Indeed, WA has even eased its qualification rules for imports so as to help bolster the declining numbers in higher grades. Maybe these two elements cancel each other out? Bruce Teague, Gosford NSW. (PS: You might ask why I talk mostly about Victoria. Well, like many other folk I know about, one of the major reasons is that information ie results and formguides is readily available for Victorian races. On the other hand, the OzChase system which takes care of all other states is poorly laid out and restrictive. It is just not worth the bother. Many pleas to these states for improvements have been completely ignored although the design belongs to NSW alone, where it was initiated by an outside consultant with dubious qualifications. So much for the customers???).

BRED TO WIN Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances. MUMMA S MEATLOAF (Black bitch, August 2015 Bella Infrared* x Sluice) Trained at Tanjil South by Kate Gorman, for the Millard Racing Group syndicate. Impressive at first two starts when second both times, over 525 metres at Traralgon, March 20 and 25, from boxes eight and seven. Stepped up in class over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on April 2 from box seven. She found all sorts of trouble and finished last, 17 lengths from the winner, Benny s Entity (29.73). Found to be injured after the race so forget she ever started and she should do better at her next start. DARK PORTAL (Black Dog, March 2015 Velocette x Spiral Staircase). Trained at Elliminyt, by Vicki Brook, for Ross Brook. Beautifully bred and looks to have plenty of promise. Raced 11 times for a win and two placings, before last start second, over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on April 2. Came from box six and made it two seconds in a row when beaten 4.19 lengths in the race won by Serebtipitous (29.89). Look for a better outcome for her shortly, especially if she draws a little better. PIA (Black bitch, March 2015 Barcia Vale x Peggie) Beautifully bred bitch, raced and trained at Rowville, by Bruce Carter. Now raced six times for an impressive win over 520 metres at Cranbourne (30.61) and one placing over 460 metres at Warragul. Last start fifth, from box six, over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on April 2, in the race won by Chasin Crackers (29.93). The winner is very smart and she had no luck at all from box six. 22 Looking Back Maddog down under. The Clarks, Devonport, Burnie and Wynyard. By Maddog McDermutt and Little Elsie Reprinted from American Greyhound Review, Devonport, the home of our third and last dog track visit on the island of Tasmania, lines the banks of the Mersey River and is Tasmania s third largest city. It is home to the Spirit of Tasmania, the great all night ferry we would board to get to Melbourne on the mainland. In fact, from the clubhouse of the Devonport Track, you can see the Spirt of Tasmania, secured on the Mersey River. From this vantage point The Spirt of Tasmania looks like it is parked on the main street of town. They say the ship turns around in the river, right where it s parked. That, obviously, was not possible. The ship was longer than the river was wide. Just not possible. Tasmania has three dog tracks: you can bet dogs and horses on the phone! All you need to get started is 20 bucks, obtain an account number and a PIN number. Sounds an awful lot like my drive in bank cash machine, drive up, punch a few keys, and it cranks out money. Our daughter refers to this futuristic technology as Fantastic Plastic. Judging from the purses, maybe Americans ought to look at this. I did not see any slots at any Tasmanian track. A whole lot of people had to be out there on the phones because outside of the dog handlers I saw very few live punters at the track, although at Melbourne s The Meadows I would eat those words as that track was packed with spectators and long lines at the windows. Al and Di Clark took us under wing, invited us to stay with them at their lovely home, drive us around, see this, see that. We are hoping the Clark s will visit us in America, and we can show them around Yellowstone and Glacier, to name two of our popular showcasing stops, and maybe a dog track or some farms as well. What d you do before taking on the dog business? I asked, as we drove past Tasmania s famous tulip fields out of season. Continuing to drive on the wrong side of the road, Al glanced at me, responded cheerfully: Kyionvyiors. I checked my hearing aids. They seemed to be working Could you repeat that? I asked. Kinviyawrs. I glanced at Little Elsie in the back seat. She shrugged. No clues there. Kyionvyior belts! Al said. Ah so, I said. Kin ViYawr Belts. Turns out Al Clark worked in the belting business for ten years, then decided to go out on his own, which he did, and he had his own business for twelve years. Judging from his house and property, I would guess Al did just fine. He must have made a lot of belts. Al had Greyhounds during this belting business period, but he had people training them for him. Al sold the business so that he could spend more time with the family. And dogs. A familiar theme: Al Clark owned a conveyor belt business, sold out, stepped off the planet to go into the dog business. Al had invited us to stay with them and offered to drive us around to take in the sights. We naturally took him up on the offer, Little Elsie and I went noses to glass, totally enjoyed the 47 km ride from Devenport to Burney. I did a little math in my head, figured 47 km was miles. I had not counted on such a long driveway up to the spacious home of Al and Di Clark and quickly recalculated the distance to Miles. Continued Page 23

Maddog down under. The Clarks - continued We met Alex and Daniel Clark and learned that the Clarks have lived at this household for fourteen years. They built dog paddocks and then built on them. First things first, you know. Next, we watched tapes of races of Clark dogs, particularly a dog called Black Caleb. The dog came home like an explosion. Race after race, just at the finish line, the dog burst across the finish line by a nose, maybe two noses. We took a stroll down a gently sloping hill of the rambling Clark estate for the dog runs and kennels, at which time the discussion bordered more on the ludicrous rather than the intellectual. Anal gland infection in the racing Greyhound. I forget how that came up in the first place. Anal glands. Something like a skunk. Our adopted dog Jones had an anal gland problem. Al said soft food was the culprit and bones helped. I said one of my main informants in America leaned to green beans for fiber. Personally, in all the Greyhounds we fussed with in the good old days, I never heard of anal gland problems. But Jones since his beginnings with us seemed to be unique in many ways. I always thought only little dogs had anal gland problems. Jones had the problem so bad at one time he could barely make it out the door. Al said, I have squeezed the glands. It depends on how bad the problem is. Well now that was a new one. I wasn t sure what he meant. I had to say our dog Jones would never stand still for such a thing and further wondered that if I ever went to squeezing anal glands it would be a good idea to play a recording of The Star Spangled Banner, because otherwise I don t think the dog would stand still. Special Feature They call it express. Express the anal glands. Give me a break. Al sensed my consternation, said, Outside. Not inside. Well of course I knew that. It didn t take me long to realize that Al was supposed to wear hearing aids. I would imagine, after all, lots of potential nerve damaging noises from a conveyor belt business. I guess. I wasn t sure what a conveyor belt business was, but judging from the real estate, I suspected it was better than OK. Al, I said. Do you wear hearing aids? What? DO YOU WEAR HEARING AIDS! Little Elsie said something I don t care to repeat. I have hearing aids, Al said, but I don t wear them. They annoy me. Atta boy. My kind of guy. When Little Elsie was looking the other way, I plucked mine out of my head, put them away. The interview continued. Who knows what might come of this Greyhound Review story. We were both deaf! The Clarks have five children: Brad. Matthew. Daniel. Alex, a daughter Steph and son-in law Tony and a beautiful (by Al s own admission) granddaughter Meg who is almost two. The first pen we came to contained Whiskey Assassin pups. Obviously too young to race, Al said. They are nice looking pups but that does not win races! In the beginning it was the old familiar story. How d you get into the dog business? I had two dogs, Al said. I got my trainer s license and raced them myself. One ran second, and I have been hooked ever since. At the end of the road, we came to a pen with a mother dog with a litter of pups. This is Black Caleb s sister, Al said. What color is that? I said. She is registered as blue. I never saw a blue like that before. In fact, I don t think I had ever seen a Greyhound that color. Didn t look blue to me. The pups are by Whiskey Assassin, Al said. I recognized that name. Awesome Assassin and Princess Whiskey. Follow the Princess Whiskey sire line back four generations, why there s the famous American Sand Man (Friend Westy X Miss Gorgeous) who made a name for himself at stud in Ireland. Sand Man, according to Greyhound Data on the web, was bred by Warren Weggert and Wayne Strong. Our wonderful 3-8ths dog Ol Whitey (SS Jeno X Sad Fire) ran and won top grade in the Warren Weggert kennel at Seabrook. Sad Fire was Don Guccione s great 3-8ths Flagler dog which we took care of in the late 1960 s. Small world Continued Page 24

Special Feature Maddog down under The Clarks - continued Hate to sound like a broken record, but I d love to come over to Tasmania with a pup and just vacation for half a year, drive track to track in an RV, exercise the pup on an isolated beach somewhere, show up at this track or that track, Gday Mate, lovely day for a dog race. With my Jawa Leona s Best Hall of Fame breeding. We walked a little further down the hill, and around a corner, and there were the long runs and a kennel building. Al said the place was under construction and new facilities were on the way. I met most of the dogs, in particular a big, powerful, blockbuster black dog by the name of Black Caleb. Al opened the door of his obligatory meat locker, to show us several carcasses hanging. Greyhound fans, that s one and three quarters pound), plus vitamins and approximately one cup of dry food. The evening meal is the main meal. The other dogs get the same, maybe just a little bit more. Evening meal? You must mean tea. Yes, tea. Notice the lingo. I m catching on. The next day we took a drive headed west along the northwest coast of Tasmania. Absolutely gorgeous. We visited the Russell Watts farm, and Sandra Elephenstone and her Greyhounds. I took pictures of penguins sunbathing on a big rock until to my embarrassment they flew away, which means they were not penguins after all, as penguins don t fly. We were very close to the cleanest air in the world. We stopped at Di Clark s store in Wynyard. I have been in the store for almost three years, Di said. I stock clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, and the like. The shop is about a twenty minute drive from home miles, actually. What is that? I asked, staring at the inside of the meat locker. What s in there? Al shrugged like he wasn t sure, either that or he preferred not to say. Maybe he didn t hear me. Little Elsie took pictures. My meat locker is a cool room, Al explained. It is approximately two metres square, and it runs by electricity. I mainly feed beef or horse. Most of the meat comes from Smithton which is a dairy farming area. The people I get the meat from have abattoirs for the purpose of supplying pet food. Say what? I said, seeking clarification. Abattoirs? Slaughter house, Al clarified, then continued. I feed the race dogs about 650 grams of meat (gentle US Di said, I am in the process of closing the store because a small business cannot compete with the larger ones. My lease is due for renewal, and I had to make the decision if I wanted to sign up for another three years, and I was not prepared to do that. I will close the store at the end of May. It will be sad, but it has been an experience! Little Elsie bought a trinket which back in Montana would be the talk of the doll, garden, and book clubs, to which she belongs. Back to Burnie. The Devonport Cup, Al said, is worth $10, (Australian dollars). When I won with Black Caleb, it was worth $5, They take the best six dogs in heats. Eight heat winners go into the final. Black Caleb throws strong dogs. For the season he finished second as the leading stud dog in Tasmania. Continued Page 25

Maddog down under The Clarks - continued Lilli Pilli Lad passed away peacefully in his sleep on 5th August RIP. Special Feature Lilli Pilli Lad Caleb had something like 49 starts for 28 wins and won approximately $ Australian. From nineteen starts at Devonport Caleb won 16 and placed 3 times. Little Elsie and I got an from Di Clark the other day. We are looking at coming over in the next twelve months as we would like to go back to Denmark as well. Would like to see you guys again. Door s open. The next day we would sail for Melbourne on The Spirit of Tasmania. I missed Tasmania, and we hadn t left yet. What a beautiful place, great visit, and now who would like to step up with a female for my Hall of Fame breeding? My winning ticket to Jawa Leona s Best for pick of the litter At the moment our only dog is Jones, the retired R.J. s Baretta from Iowa, and he has no interest in the project, although he d like to go to Tasmania and cheer. I will admit, one thing I am not sure about is quarantine. I should check into that. Lilli Pilli Lad was the leading dog. I was very happy as Caleb never had many runners for the season. Next Week: Maddog and Little Elsie arrive in Melbourne. The Spirit of Tasmania as seen from the Devonport greyhound track
