1 Victorian Greyhound Weekly Volume 1 Number 11 Friday December 16, 2016 VALE SIMON BENSON (Courtesy GRV) The greyhound racing industry is saddened by the sudden loss of Simon Benson at just 30 years of age. Simon shattered his leg in a serious bike accident on his property at Buln Buln East two months ago, and spent the next four weeks recovering at the Latrobe Valley Hospital in Traralgon. He was just learning to walk again when he collapsed at home on Monday (November 28) because of a blood clot in his leg and was rushed into Monash Hospital, where he had a major heart attack that night. He remained in an induced coma from Monday night until his passing last Saturday night. Although he has only been involved in greyhound racing for around 12 months, Simon s larger-than-life character left a big impression on the greyhound racing community. Simon worked on the family farm, located next door to greyhound trainer Steve White, with whom he quickly formed a strong bond. I met Simon when I moved to Victoria from NSW in November last year and have basically seen him every day for the last 12 months, Steve said. He d ring me or text me 20 times a day and he got his catcher s license and would catch my dogs for me. He called himself the pro catcher and he d travel to every track around Victoria with me to race or trial. I gave him a Paua Kennels t-shirt, which is the name of my greyhound business, and he took a photo of himself wearing it and sent it to his dad in Darwin. He was so proud. He also became a member of the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club and a few months ago I bought a greyhound called He s Clever from NSW and I gave a ¼ share to him. I held off racing him until Simon came out of hospital, and he won first up for us at Warragul. Continued Page

During the transition period, if a participant doesn t have access to an air-conditioned trailer and they need to transport greyhounds where their travel is heat affected, GRV will permit transportation in trailers without airconditioning if: The participant does not have an air-conditioned trailer and can t reasonably get access to one, and The trailer is fitted with a properly fitted and functioning power-assisted ventilation system that operates throughout the entire journey, and A thermometer has been fitted to the inside of the trailer and the temperature is checked and recorded in a log book at the start of the journey, at each break and at the end of the journey. Participants are reminded that regardless of the form of transport used, the internal temperature of a vehicle or trailer transporting a greyhound must be maintained at 32 degrees or lower. Participants who do not currently own an air-conditioned trailer are encouraged to seek access to, and use of, alternative forms of compliant transport. 11 GREYHOUND OF THE WEEK This week s Greyhound of the week is: THIRTY TALKS VALE SIMON BENSON...continued It was great because Simon was at the track to watch him race and the dog ran the best time of the night. It was a shame Simon couldn t catch him that night because of his injury, but it was so good that the first race he was involved in as owner his dog actually won. Simon was one of a kind. He was always happy and had so many wild stories to tell, and he had a great rapport with quite a few greyhound trainers including Anthony Azzopardi. He loved life, loved his cows, loved his farm and he loved his greyhounds. He s my best mate and will be sorely missed by my wife Kerrie and I. It s heartbreaking that this has happened, especially to someone so young. THIRTY TALKS - Brindle Dog, June 2014 June 2014 Where s Pedro x Unfinished 33 starts 21 wins and 2 thirds Career Stake Earnings $276,541 Last start Group 1 Brisbane Cup winner (See review page 14), this brilliant sprinter, trained at Grandchester by Tony Brett for Leonard Antonio is from a litter which included Marylou, Monaro Robbie, Motel Girl, Rita s Moment, Society Girl, Split Image and Sylvia s Monaro. Their dam s only other litter on file, whelped in January 2013, by Brett Lee, produced Aces And Angels, Bowl Em Out, Bretty, Increasing, Swiss Ace, This Moment and Enpending. His other wins include the Group 2 Ipswich Cup and Group 3 Rich Riches. He finished third in the Group 2 Queensland Derby and was a finalist in the Group 1 Winter Cup, Group 2 Vince Curry Memorial and Group 3 Gold Coast Cup. He has now won eleven times over 520 metres at Albion Park (29.57), five times over 520 metres at Ipswich (30.03), four times over 535 metres at Richmond (30.37) and also over 515 metres at Sandown (29.60). He is beautifully bred, with his dam, Unfinished being by Bombastic Shiraz (Black Shiraz x Bombastic Blonde), from Stylish Scene (Just The Best x Tranquil Scene), whose dam is by Light Of Fire x Tranquil Flame. His outstanding race record and brilliant P.B times make him an ideal stud prospect in my estimation, and as a son of the champion sire Where s Pedro, whose pedigree goes back through Brett Lee, Brother Fox, Bobniak and Farloe Melody, he is sure to attract plenty of interest from breeders when it s time. 14 Tony Brett s Third Brisbane Cup with Thirty Talks By Katherine Ernst Australian Racing Greyhound, supplied by AGRA. THIRTY TALKS ($4.40) scored the biggest win of his career on Friday night, taking out the Group 1 Brisbane Cup (520m) at Albion Park. Starting from box three, the brindle dog was cleanly away and got plenty of room to move in the early stages as his kennel mate Zabdon Ferrari (box two) charged through to take the early lead. Moving through the catching pen, Thirty Talks found himself in second spot around three lengths behind the leader, with Crazy Vixon settling just behind the leading pair in third spot. Coming off the back and it was still Zabdon Ferrari ($4.90) high-balling out in front, but Thirty Talks wasn t going down without a fight, storming down the centre of the track in the home straight and sprinting clear to score by half a length in race record time of A son of Where s Pedro and Unfinished, Thirty Talks has now won 21 of his 33 starts for trainer Tony Brett and owner Lenny Antonio, with Friday s victory taking his career earnings above the $275,000 mark. Thirty Talks has now won his past four starts, including the Group 3 Ipswich Cup, whilst his prize money have also been bolstered courtesy of a stunning victory in May s Group 2 Richmond Riches. Zabdon Ferrari was far from disgraced when running second, picking up $21,500 for his efforts, with race favourite Outside Pass ($2.80) (box seven) producing a massive run to finish third, albeit five and one quarter lengths behind the winner. It was the third Brisbane Cup success for trainer Tony Brett, having also won the final with Bogie Leigh and Glen Gallon. After the placed runners the field finished in the following order 4th Blazin Bomber ($4.10), 5th Whata Nice Size ($24.20), 6th Lady Abigall ($38.60), 7th Crazy Vixon ($21.90) and Not Like Tommy ($23.30). 16 Bob McKinnon Part 2 Great Falls Montana (USA) More About the Author - The Story of Swimming and Greyhounds in Montana. One day, fifty-five years ago, as I waited to swim in the Pan American Games 400 meter trials, at Treasure Island, the University of Montana swim coach sat down, introduced himself, said he wanted me to swim in Montana. And so I rode my motorcycle north, and from the University Education Building I gazed out at Rattlesnake Creek this was no Bay Area scene. Coach, you got a deal. My first experience with writing came via a conversation at the Grizzly pool. Part of my scholarship, I life-guarded adult lap swimming. A regular participant was a drama teacher, and from time to time we visited about this and that, and one day, he mentioned that the drama department was having a play-writing contest. I said something, like, That s nice. My best guess, it wasn t what I said, it was way I said it. He said, I suppose you think you could write a play. Greyhound People In my entire life I had seen one play, in San Francisco: Archibald McLeish s Job. Other than that I had no idea what a play was. I went home and that night and a lot of nights afterward, I wrote a one act play, The Sport of Kings, about two bums who came to own a steeplechase horse I submitted the play on Deadline Day, informed there were a number of entries this year. I rather thought that maybe at the next lap swim I should hold my lap swim friend under just for fun. A few weeks later, the announcement came: The Sport of Kings was a finalist? The drama department of the University of Montana was going to produce three one act plays. One of them was my play!!!!!???? That s nice. Now what? The three plays were announced in the school paper. After a workout, a couple of weeks later, the Grizzly swim team was showering after practice with the usual BS, one guy says, I hear you wrote a play that s going to be performed in the Masquer Theatre. We hear you re having a problem casting it, our diver said. I had a head full of soap foam. I nodded. We ve been talking, the butterflyer said. We d like to put it on, I mean, we don t know anything about acting, but then you don t know anything about writing, and we understand the girls are cute. I rinsed the soap out of my eyes, turned to look this bunch over. You gotta be kiddin I said. And it came to be. My one act play, The Sport of Kings, the all- male cast was the University of Montana Grizzly Swim Team, and we took that Masquer Theatre by storm. It should be mentioned, The Masterpiece, a steeplechase horse, had a nasty habit. He couldn t jump. And the last jump was a brick wall! The play brought the house down. It went on to win the University writing award. And that, and I did not know it then, was the beginning of Maddog McDermutt, my nom de plume. Maddog McDermutt, as I look back on it, there is no question, Maddog was the lead in my one act play, The Sport of Kings. Today, Maddog is a household word in the Greyhound industry, internationally. Maddog has published over 250 short stories and articles; he is working on magazine #3 The Sport of Queens for the Iowa Greyhound Association; he shows up as a character in two of my books, Down Under Jones and Jesse s Hound. The list goes on. As a college kid on a scholarship I did not have to work. My first summer I went from North Fork, Idaho to Jack London Square in Oakland, via the Salmon, Snake, Columbia, Willamette, a portage, and down the Sacramento into the Bay Area. My second summer I put a small boat in at Fort Benton, Montana, and ended up in Savannah, Georgia, via the Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, a portage, and down the Savannah into Savannah, Georgia. The third summer I was the first to go up the Salmon River, The River of No Return, in a power boat. Continued Page 17 Find Bob McKinnon s books at:

My river trips led to three books published by Whiskey Creek Press, about the dog of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, The Captain s Dog, Parts 1, 2, and 3. Aardwolfe Books has published sixteen short stories: Vintage Maddog. My wife Suzy and I live in Great Falls, Montana. THE OTHER SIDE OF RAY BORDA. We all know Ray Borda, successful Breeder and greyhound owner, whose greyhound have won races in every state, including many Group race victories. We also know Ray Borda, of Macro Meats, the generous greyhound sponsor/supporter of many years standing. But here are some things about him that you may not know, taken from his business profile on the world s largest professional network: Ray is the Managing Director (and founder) of multi award winning Company, Macro Meats Gourmet Game, which is Australia s and one of the world s leading producer of wild game meat, specialising in kangaroo. Working with state and federal governments, Ray helped develop quality control procedures and guidelines for the game meat industry. Working closely with highprofile chefs, Ray has progressively educated consumers (the public) into accepting game meat as a high-value food source, rich in protein and nutrition. This has elevated kangaroo meat to being a gourmet product for health-conscious consumers and in the process has built Macro into a major Australian business employing 300+ employees and operating three processing plants each with export licences. Ray is also the President of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia and is involved in many consultative boards around Australia involved in kangaroo management, conservation and animal welfare. In addition, he is a long-standing member on Rural Industry Research and Development Corporation s Kangaroo Advisory Committee. In 2009, Ray was named Central Region and National Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2014, at the South Australian Food Industry Awards, Ray was also named the inaugural winner of the Duncan MacGillivray Entrepreneurs Award and was more recently inducted as an Ambassador for South Australia's Premium Food & Wine industry and appointed Chair of Food SA. Ray Borda is a strong advocate of animal welfare and sustainability and has built his business around these values. For over 30 years Ray has pioneered kangaroo meat product globally. Macro has been the industry leader in R & D of wild game meat products, employing microbiologists, food scientists and researchers. ********** Macro Meats was established in 1987 by founder Ray Borda. His vision was to develop kangaroo meat not only as another meat for human consumption, but to promote the many benefits of this uniquely Australian meat. Located in South Australia, the Australian company is family owned and operated by Ray and his family
