2 Warner Smitty Kalbach Smitty joined NOCI in 1972 and the GSDC in His first dog was Klause Auf Der Heide, who was also his first UDT dog. Over the years he achieved the UDT title on his next eight GSDs. Most notably however, his GSD Nitro achieved an OTCH. His 9 th and last GSD, Xena, obtained a UD but at that point he did not track with her. He was well known for always having a German Shepherd Dog or two with him at all times. Smitty held the DOT position at the GSDC for 25 years plus, and the trustee position for 27 years, along with being the grounds and maintenance guy for many years. If it was broke he fixed it. He was also very involved with other clubs including NOCI more so years ago when we were in Palatine. He would always agree to judge a fun match whenever asked. He touched so many people by just being willing to help and share his knowledge, time, and energy. He would never turn down a plea for help. He had a profound effect on an untold amount of people who were struggling at times to simply gain control of their dogs, or for those seeking assistance in their pursuit of obedience titles. Smitty joined the Army at 15 yrs old in 1946 under an assumed name with an Honorable Discharge in His assumed name of Warner Schmidt, explains how he gained the nickname of Smitty. He was later drafted in his own real name of Warner Kalbach, which caused some confusion, but ultimately he obtained two Honorable Discharges. He was a legend in the sheet metal workers trade, and those that knew him back then say that he was by far the hardest working man in the trades. He felt that duct tape and sheet metal could fix anything! The German Shepherd Dog was his lifelong love and passion. Training his dogs and competing in AKC obedience trials all over the country is what he lived for. One of his proudest moments was when he achieved the Top Scoring German Shepherd in the entire country. His family events were always planned around dog shows! In his later years most of his time and energy was invested in The German Shepherd Dog Training Club located in Hanover Park. Training his dogs and instructing other people was his allconsuming focus. Some of his favorite sayings or phrases: Nah, I don t believe that. You re way too nice to that dog. You get out of it what you put into it. Whatever you do, be the best you can be at it. Hard work is the only way to get there. Warner Smitty Kalbach died peacefully on August 10, 2011 and was 80 years young. He has joined his beloved wife Helen in Heaven. May he rest in peace and enjoy his dogs that have crossed the rainbow bridge. We know they are there waiting for him in perfect heel position. Exercise finished. Submitted by Amber Perri

3 President s Message Page 3 Did you know that Illinois is the largest producer of pumpkins in the US? I know what you are thinking. What does this have to do with dog training? Well, from what I can tell, absolutely nothing. I just heard that tidbit on the radio and thought I would pass it on. The October General Membership Meeting will be Friday, the 21st at 7:30 pm. This will be the last meeting of the calendar year and thus will be the last meeting in which members can attend to meet the attendance requirement for year end awards. Each year we have a few people who miss out because they "forgot" to attend a meeting. This year is going to be different...right? Judy has copies of all the sign-in sheets from the meetings and will be double checking at the end of the year to see who has been naughty or nice. She will also be given a copy of the service credit "log" to see who has donated service time to the club, yet another requirement for the awards. I hope to see many of you at the General Membership Meeting. Tim The Contact Zone I often get asked why there is never any articles about agility in the Fireplug. Basically it is because no one writes them. I hope to change that in the future with a new feature: The Contact Zone. This will not be an every issue thing, at least by me, but will be a periodic piece of what is going on in the NOCI agility world. I can't think of any better subject to start off with than the accomplishments of Chuck Bubert and his PWD Jack. Jack, along with some help from Chuck (Chuck drove), recently earned their MACH 7. This means that they successfully ran both JWW and Standard perfectly on the same day (Double Q) 20 times and earned 750 MACH points along the way. That just got them their first MACH. They have now repeated this 6 more times for a total of 140 Double Q's (240 clean runs) and accumulated 5250 MACH points. Currently Jack is the #1 Working Dog in the AKC agility standings. Now that they have perfected their game, Chuck and Jack will continue to compete and most certainly add to those numbers. Another exciting agility happening is that NOCI will be hosting an agility seminar March 2-4, 2012 with Dave Munnings. Dave is one of the UK's top agility competitors both as a junior and as an adult. He has been on the British World Team multiple times with multiple dogs. He and his dogs Billy and Dobby have won almost every UK final, have won the European Open as well as winning Bronze in 2005(Billy) and Silver in 2010(Dobby) at the FCI World Agility Championships. Dave has developed his own training style and recently released his first instructional DVD "Q-Me". All of this and the guy isn't even 30 years old yet! I have contacted people in the UK who both know Dave and have trained with him and they have assured me that it is well worth the time to work with him. I have also been in contact with people in Canada who have attended the seminar that he gave there a few years ago and they too had nothing but good things to say. This seminar will be geared towards young dogs creating focus, control and drive and will be the first time that Dave has presented his training in the U.S. I will have more details and hopefully registration forms at the General Membership Meeting on October 21st. Tim

Unfinished Business: Website revision: Candy gave an in depth presentation of the various web parts and links she has created. Applause! Discussion ensued. We have separate human and dog versions. Cold packs have been replenished and there are reusable versions kept in the refrigerators on each side. She has checked the contents and they are up to date. Betty inquired about collection of excessive blood/bodily fluids and properly disposing of this safely. Discussion ensued. It is recommended to contact the Fire Dept/Paramedics who are trained in this area, and would be appropriate to advise how to handle this appropriately. Put the responsibility in the hands of professionals. Discussed creating laminated cards publishing where the first aid kits are located along with perhaps including our address in the event 911 is called. Each year the plaque is updated to reflect new accomplishments. As written in the club bylaws, this is what you must do to be eligible for a plaque: 1. Submit a written record of your accomplishment on an NOCI score report form. Score reports should be placed in the Woof Box in the club office, mailed to the awards chairperson (Judy Gemperline) or submitted online at tinyurl.com/nociscore. Score reports must be submitted by December 31 of the year in which the title was earned. If you do not meet the deadline, the club will not pay for the engraving/plaque. 2. Provide one service to the club during the calendar year. Fill out the service form so we have a record. 3. Attend at least one general membership meeting during the calendar year. Last meeting of the year! October 21st 7:30 p.m. Be sure to sign the attendance sheet whenever you attend a meeting. Due to the increasing number and expense of these awards, the club will be adhering to these guidelines very strictly.

8 TDX We were fortunate to have a lovely weather day on Sunday 9/4, the day of the test, considering Saturday 9/3 was extremely hot! It was a very successful weekend: we had 4 out of 5 dogs pass, one of which was our very own Rich Spetka! (Congrats Rich!!) And for those of you that track, you will know it is simply amazing to have that many dogs pass. By the way, the one dog who failed did pass the following weekend at another club's test. This test had its ups and downs due to unforeseen emergencies, our judging panel completely changed -- so of course as worried if that was a bad sign about our test, but in the end all went very well! As you know, our events could not be possible without the dedicated help of our members who volunteer (well, with my point blank asking them of course!). I'd like to thank the following folks for giving up Saturday & Sunday of their Labor Day weekend to support our TDX: Sandy Lewandowski, Jean Baumann, Ray Czubek, Gary Vierck, Nanci Lorenz, Gary Bozee, Karen Schaubel, Patti Burgess, Robin Shine, and Arlene King. And a double thank you to Arlene who is fabulous at hospitality!! Thank you, Arlene, for a wonderful menu year after year, keeping us well fed and well hydrated! We also secured a guest tracklayer this year, Eibhlin Glennon, who is also a provisional TDX judge. Thanks again everyone. Your support helped this test run very smoothly! Until next year! Amber Perri TDX Chairman and Test Secretary 2011 ANNUAL RALLY AND OBEDIENCE RAFFLES The Club will be hosting its annual AKC Rally and Obedience trials on December 16 th and 17 th. We will again have a raffle at each one of these trials and we are in urgent need of donations. Bins for the donations will be put on each of the obedience and agility sides within the next few weeks. Please consider making a donation. Donations do not have to be dog related, so let your imagination run wild. If you don t have time to shop or are stumped on what to donate, we will gladly accept cash and shop for you. As always, we can use baskets. We need your donations by Dec. 1 st as we need time to organize, assemble, and wrap the baskets. Please put your name with your donation so that we may include you on our thank you board. The raffles have been very successful in the past because of your support. Thank you in advance we really appreciate it. Nanci Lorenz ( or lorenzn@sbcglobal.net) and Sandy Lewandowski ( or Sandy.Lewandowski@ChappleDB.com)

9 Dear Abby, My owner and I go to obedience every week. He acts like we are going to go somewhere fun and then when we get to obedience class, I can't wrestle with my friends or sniff or anything. What is the point? I know how to do it. I didn't mind this when I was a puppy, but now I am six months old. What can I do? Signed (Pawed): Frustrated in Florida Dear Frustrated, You are completely missing the point of obedience class. Obedience is not supposed to be fun and games. It is an important tool to ensure that your owner does his most basic function: giving you treats. Treats are the reason that early dogs first agreed to share a cave with humans. (Treats and thunder, of course.) The way to best guarantee the frequent dispersal of treats is to never respond to any of your owner's requests too regularly. The optimum response percentage has been tested in our labs to be between 30 and 60%. If you respond less than 30% your owner may decide that you are deaf, which will result in your visiting the vet. At the vet you may get shots and will usually have your temperature taken. Why risk it? If you respond more than 60% of the time, your owner will expect your response rate to increase in the future. The logical extension of that pattern is the dog who has to leap through flaming hoops to get a piece of liver. There are better ways for a dog to make a living. Note that I am saying response, not obedience. Response does not mean that you should drop everything to cater to your owner's whims. This results in a spoiled owner. For example, if your owner calls you to him, you should first look at him to see if he has a treat. If he has no treat in his hand, then just sit there. Then look at all of the intervening space between the two of you. This shows him that you are aware of how much effort it will take to honor his request. After looking around, go back to whatever you were doing. Do not watch your owner. At this point they begin to wonder if you will ever come. When it appears that he is about to give up, start to walk toward him. Halfway to your owner you should stop, sit, and scratch your neck vigorously. This reminds him that you had things to do before he interrupted you. When you are finished scratching, walk slowly to him with your head hanging low to demonstrate how tired you are of his ceaseless demands. You can sit in front of him and if he reaches down to pet you, quickly lie down before he can touch you. If he then tries to get into a heeling position (you know, where he has to keep his legs even with your shoulder) look up at him and roll over on your back. This shows that you forgive him for being so selfish. If your owner has a treat, a slightly different response is in order. When he calls you, look at him. If you see a treat run as fast as you can to him. Just before you hit him, turn your shoulder so that you don't hurt yourself and try to connect with his knees. When he falls down, rummage through his pocket or bait bag and take all of the treats. Eat all of the treats as quickly as possible while staying out reach of your owner. When you are finished eating, sit calmly in the heel position. This demonstrates that you are satisfied with the treats. If your owner tries to teach you to do a trick (roll over, beg, do his taxes,...), you should try to learn these tricks. If just you and your owner see you perform these tricks, no one is harmed. However, if your owner tries to get you to show these tricks to other humans, you should stand still and look at him without any sign of understanding. This shows that you can't be fooled that easily. See -- obedience is important. The biggest reason for regular attendance of obedience class: It is where your orders will come from on the day of the dog's worldwide revolt against their owners. You will have to be in class to be able to relay orders to all of the dogs in your neighborhood. So go to obedience class happy. Eat your treats and grow strong. The day of our liberation is coming. Sincerely, Dear Abby October Election Slate!
