2 President s Message As we transition from the Thanksgiving holiday into Christmas, our thoughts go from giving thanks to giving. I thought this would be a great opportunity to put those thoughts into something that relates to NOCI. Our club has a long history. Longer than some of us have been alive. But through it all, the club would not stand without a common element. That being the members who have worked tirelessly throughout to make things happen. The club is built around its classes. They are the foundation from which we build everything. The building we rent, the shows we hold and the charity we give, are all grown from those classes. It is also fair to say that those classes could not happen without the instructors and assistants that teach them. Without these people, there would be no classes, no facility, shows or events. There would be no club. It is here that I will start by giving thanks to those who give week after week. You are the hub to our wheels. Bev Mills, Laura Kokaska, Rich Spetka, Ellen Lifson, Ken Orzolek, Suzi Shultz, Jessica Frost, Ray Czubek, Cheryle Homuth, Toni Reeves, Sandy Shivers, Patti Burgess, Joan Nebesky, Jim Nicholson, Cheryl Kistner, Dan Buckley, Gary Vierck, BJ Theorin, Kim Martens, Kim Young, Chris Wagner, Marla Richardson, Betty Juergensmeyer, Shari Hoffman, Linda Grove, Grace Lasota and our nonmember Joyce Morse. You all drive from near and far so that the rest of us have a place to call ours. If I have omitted anyone, I apologize. The Board Members: Shari Hoffman, Joan Nebesky, Bob Arens, Ed Barys, Amber Perri, Patti Burgess, Kim Martens and Barb Novak keep track of various daily things from the treasury, service credits, membership, classes, the building and equipment. I, of course, keep track of the...poop can. The little jobs are never-ending. There are a few behind the scenes players involved that need a mention too. Arlene King keeps track of the Yahoo list. Candy McGill keeps our website updated (when we send her updates, that is) and Lisa Strandberg assembles all of the Fireplug issues. We often take for granted that these things will be at our fingertips with little thought of how they got there. You do not have to be mentioned above or be any of the numerous other individuals who donate copious amounts of time with events ranging anywhere from the Annual Banquet, Obedience/Rally/Agility Trials, Fun matches, Run-thrus etc. to have shown your generosity around the club. Recently, our neighbor Home Instead, the in-home senior care company, put up a Giving Tree on the obedience side of the building. The tree is covered with paper ornaments, each with a senior person s name and a short list of items that each has requested. Members have been asked to take an ornament and get the items on the list. Home Instead will then distribute those items to the people on the ornament. As of this writing, the Giving Tree seems to have been a big success. There are quite a few people, most of whom we do not know, that will have a brighter holiday season due to your generous donations. Regardless of where you fall within the ranks of the club, it is my sincerest hope that you and your families, both human, canine or other, have the happiest, safest and brightest holiday season that you possibly can and thank you, each and every one of you, for your participation with NOCI. 6 The NOCI awards program At its annual awards banquet, NOCI recognizes titles and major awards won by its members by giving each handler/dog team a plaque listing its accomplishments. Each year the plaque is updated to reflect new accomplishments. As written in the club bylaws, this is what you must do to be eligible for a plaque. 1. Submit a written record of your accomplishment on a NOCI score report form. Score reports should be placed in the Woof Box in the club office, or mailed to the awards chairperson (currently Judy Gemperline). Score reports MUST be submitted by December 31 of the year in which the title was earned. If you do not meet the deadline, the club will not pay for the engraving/ plaque. 2. Provide one service to the club during the calendar year. Fill out the service form so we have a record. 3. Attend at least one general membership meeting during the calendar year. Be sure to sign the attendance sheet whenever you attend a meeting. Due to the increasing number and expense of these awards, the club will be adhering to these guidelines very strictly. 11 AKC Rules Regarding Aggression in the Ring by Marla Richardson These rules were written because a dog died after being attacked at an AKC Conformation Show and Obedience Trial. The dog's owner was intimately involved in writing these rules and approved them before they were released into the rule books. Because none of us involved knew the rules and how to ensure that they were followed, they were not enforced. The owner of the dog who died was very vocal and managed to get AKC's attention after the show was over and get them to act as well as write the sections below. If someone at the show site had known these rules and been able to press the show committee/akc rep into action, the aggressor would not have gone on to show that same day and the following day. If AKC doesn't get a report on an incident they cannot discipline the party involved, and that dog may go on next week to really do serious damage to another dog especially a smaller one. These rules are copied from sections of the appropriate books on AKC's website. Assuming those are the most current booklets out, it should be quoted correctly. It is VERY important the owners of breeds most often accused of being aggressive know these rules so they can defend their dogs. It's also important that owners of dogs most likely to be injured know these rules so that they can protect their dogs and make sure others aren't injured. From the Obedience Regulations booklet, page 9, Section 17: The judge must excuse a dog that attacks another dog in the ring and fill out the required Dog on Dog Attack form (AEDSQ3). The owner of any dog that has been excused on two occasions for attacking or attempting to attack another dog in the ring will be notified that the dog is no longer eligible to be shown in obedience classes. The judge must excuse a dog that appears dangerous to other dogs in the ring. From the Obedience Regulations booklet, page 9, Section 17a, Dog Attacks/Event Committee Hearing: Any dog that, in the opinion of the Event Committee, attacks a person or a dog at an AKC event, resulting in injury, and is believed by that Event Committee to present a hazard to persons or other dogs, shall be disqualified. When the dog is disqualified by the Event Committee pursuant to this section, a report shall be filed with the Executive Secretary of the American Kennel Club. The disqualified dog may not again compete at any AKC event nor be on the grounds of an AKC event unless and until, following application for reinstatement by the owner to the American Kennel Club, the owner receives official notification in writing from the AKC that the dog s eligibility has been reinstated. Refer to Rules Applying to Dog Shows Chapter 11 Section 8-A. From the Obedience Regulations booklet, page 24, Section 25, Misbehavior: The judge must disqualify any dog that attacks or attempts to attack any person in the ring. Any dog that attacks another dog or that appears dangerous to other dogs in the ring must be excused. From the Rules Applying to Dog Shows (this book governs ALL AKC activities where applicable, if the rules aren't written in the book for the specific sport these rules apply). Page Section 8A: Any dog, that in the opinion of the Event Committee, attacks a person or dog at an AKC event resulting in an injury and is believed by that Event Committee to present a hazard to persons or other dogs, shall be disqualified by the Event Committee pursuant to this section, a report shall be filed with the Executive Secretary of The American Kennel Club. The disqualified dog may not again compete at any AKC event nor be on the grounds of an AKC event unless and until, following application for reinstatement by the owner to the American Kennel Club, the owner receives official notification in writing from the AKC that the dog s eligibility has been reinstated. The AKC Dealing with Misconduct booklet describes the action the Event Committee must take during the Hearing and the submission of the paperwork to AKC. All of the above applies to Rally Trials, Agility Trials, Conformation Events, and Field Trials sanctioned by AKC.

13 Tails from the Southwest By: Lora Seale Yowza where the heck did this year just go? Seems like just yesterday we were welcoming in the new year of 2009 and here it is - time to welcome in Seems that when you're young you give no thought whatsoever to what the past year has shown you. As you get older you wonder just where the hell it went. But you do also take note of your experiences and the important happenings for the past 12 months. For me, 2009 meant MACH 2 on Dancer. The next really big event of course was my marriage to Russ. That brought a visit from Maggie (yes, Blaski) for the wedding and again for summer trials. It also brought Bliss, our baby Golden Retriever. In looking back over the year, however, I can't help but notice what it meant for NOCI and its members. The past twelve months brought about many new titles, new puppies, and new friends. Major congratulations go to all those members who earned titles and Qs and personal rewards. Ever notice how many congratulations hit the group ? For each title, there must be at least 20 kudos that would come across on line. Kudos to you all for being so supportive of each other! Unfortunately though the past twelve months also brought grief and sorrow to many who lost their canine companions due to illness or old age. Or lost any part of their family or friends. What always amazes me is the outreach of companionship, kinship, and heartfelt loss from one member to another. NOCI represents not just a membership but rather than kinship one where we each feel for the other. It's almost a grief support group in itself when one of us loses a friend or family member be it human or canine. Kudos to you all once again for being there in time of need; for being there just to support and hold up a fellow member/friend/companion in their time of grief. Then there is the cohesiveness of this club. I have belonged to a number of dog clubs over the years and would have to say that NOCI is THE most cohesive group of people I have had the privilege to know. Mind you, I am watching from states away but that doesn't mean I don't have great observation. A plea goes out for help at a trial, cleaning the training hall, judging, stewarding, bringing a dish to pass and Shazam! The membership comes out in droves to assist. One name from my past Gary Bozee has been there to help for many years; whether he currently had a dog to show or not. Kudos to you, Gary, for hanging in there for so long and being such a trooper. Candy McGill has been part of the backbone of NOCI for many years and is still so. Jean Baumann has taught classes, sold Fuller Brush, scrubbed floors, stewarded, manned a director position just to make sure someone was at the helm and she maintains that stature yet today. Tim what more could I say to you? You have directed this club. You have supported this club. You have lost a friend this year and all our hearts reached out to you. You have had some wonderful Qs and all our hearts helped you to celebrate. You have been a constant for NOCI for a number of years now and my hat is certainly off to you. You, of all people, understand the cohesiveness of this membership. With too many names to mention, I must add the fact that the combined knowledge of the membership never ceases to amaze me. Wally O'Brien you have spearheaded some real thought-provoking conversations over the past year. Good for you. I'm sure sometimes you were just playing devil's advocate but I could always tell when you were discussing something that you were very passionate about. I've known you for a long time as well. Don't you EVER let that passion waiver when it comes to dogs, training, and teaching an exercise. I admire your tenacity to stick with your beliefs. While I obviously do not know all the newer members, I really do read the postings on the group s. I am astounded by the camaraderie exhibited by this group. The sharing of information, the sharing of joy and sorrow, the sharing of experiences, all of that is important and I would pray that NOCI remains that way forever. I can tell you that back in 1973 when I first became a member, this was something I admired in this club. This is something I still admire, 36 years later, in Northwest Obedience Club, Inc. of Suburban Chicago. May you all have a blessed holiday and a Healthy, Happy, Prosperous New Year! Lora Cunningham (Seale) & Furry Friends
