1 NORTHWEST OBEDIENCE CLUB, INC. The Fireplug NOCI Officers President Tim Dyer (815) Vice President Gary Vierck (847) Secretary Amber Perri Treasurer Patti Burgess (847) Board of Directors Barb Novak (847) Jim Doescher (847) Ed Barys (815) July August 2012 President s Message We are now entering another August. They seem to come quicker anymore. This summer has been a tough one due to the extreme heat and humidity. The mild winter combined with the severe summer has created a perfect environment for many bugs, in particular wasps and other stinging insects. We often don't think about our pets as being targets of the stinging end of things but they can be potentially injured as a result. This year in particular due to the arid conditions, bees, wasps and hornets have been drawn to whatever water source they can find and this often includes bird baths, ornamental fountains and pet water bowls. As a precaution, these items should be emptied out and allowed to stand dry for periods of time as bees and wasps will return to the same water again and again. Like little tanker trucks, they will load up with water and take it back to the colony. As opportune nesters, wasps will uses a variety of places to build their nests. This year we are seeing them in items such as wind chimes, down spouts, patio umbrellas but I have removed numerous nests from play sets and dog houses. Yellow jackets are another concern as they often nest in the ground at the base of bushes and trees. One of my clients had to take their dog to the vet as a result of a yellow jacket assault on their dog when the dog went and laid in the shade of a bush under which a nest of yellow jackets was calling home. Take a few minutes to scout around. Look for insect activity near any water source as well as around bushes and trees. Empty out water bowls when not in use. Avoid known nesting sites or areas of high activity during the warmest part of the day as most stinging insects with be more aggressive (defensive) the hotter they are. The August General Membership Meeting will be Friday the 17th at 7:30pm. I hope to see everyone there. Tim Join the list! NOCI Awards Program At its annual awards banquet, NOCI recognizes titles and major awards won by its members by giving each handler/dog team a plaque listing its accomplishments. Each year the plaque is updated to reflect new accomplishments. As written in the club bylaws, this is what you must do to be eligible for a plaque: 1. Submit a written record of your accomplishment on an NOCI score report form. Score reports should be placed in the Woof Box in the club office, mailed to the awards chairperson (Judy Gemperline) or submitted online at tinyurl.com/nociscore. Score reports must be submitted by December 31 of the year in which the title was earned. If you do not meet the deadline, the club will not pay for the engraving/plaque. 2. Provide one service to the club during the calendar year. Fill out the service form so we have a record. 3. Attend at least one general membership meeting during the calendar year. Be sure to sign the attendance sheet whenever you attend a meeting. Due to the increasing number and expense of these awards, the club will be adhering to these guidelines very strictly.

6 The Contact Zone By Debbie Butt Approximately 20 people attended the Agility Equipment Set-up classes in June. Thanks to all who attended. The A-frame has been repaired! Thanks to Chris Newberg and Jim Doescher for transporting the A-frame to the welder and back. Since it needs some parts, it can no longer be folded and placed against the back wall. It must be kept as flat as possible and put along the left side wall. Please contact me or Jim Doescher if you have any questions on how to do this. If you use the agility side of the club outside of class for training, please remember to turn up the air to 80, turn off the fans and lights and lock the door when you leave. MARK THESE DATES on your calendar: September 29, October 27 th, November 11 th, December 2 nd. We ll be starting up Agility Run-Thru s again! The September and October dates will be in the morning. The November and December dates will be in the afternoon. We ll need volunteers for these dates. More information to follow. Feel free to contact me directly via (dogloveril@aol.com) or phone ( ) with any comments / feedback / suggestions for the agility program. From AKC... The AKC Companion Events department has some exciting news for clubs licensed to hold obedience/rally events regarding changes to the regulations. The Department continues to focus on growing participation by varying levels of competitors. To continue generating new competitor interest, the AKC has developed new Optional Titling classes and titles: the Pre-Novice Class, Pre-Open Class and Pre-Utility Class. The classes have been developed with no Group Exercises and the jumps in Pre-Open and Pre-Utility are set to half the height of the dog at the withers. With the addition of the new Pre-Novice Optional Titling Class, the current Non- Regular Pre-Novice Class has been renamed the Sub-Novice Class. These new classes become effective and may be offered at events beginning July 1, With the addition of more new classes, it became apparent that AKC needed to allow exhibitors the ability to move their dog to more than just the traditional level classes when they complete a title. The language in the Obedience Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 16a has been changed from "Move-ups" to "Transfers". Effective July 1, 2012, after a dog earns a title, it may be transferred to another class in a future trial even though the closing date for the trial has passed, provided the club offers transfers and provided the dog and handler are eligible. Dogs competing in obedience in the Optional Titling classes may be moved to Regular Titling classes and vice versa or even to Non-Regular classes at the request of the exhibitor. Transfers are only allowed within the same sport, e.g. obedience class to obedience class, or rally class to rally class. The request to transfer must be presented in writing to the superintendent or trial secretary at least 30 minutes prior to the start of each trial. Transfers may be approved provided the class and judge are available, and the class has not reached its limit. Movement between an "A" and "B" class at the same level is not considered a transfer refer to Chapter 1, Section 16b of the Obedience Regulations. Another change applies to the Beginner Novice B Class eligibility requirements (Obedience Regulations Chapter 6, Section 2). Previously once a dog had earned the BN title, they were required to move out of the Beginner Novice Class. Effective August 1, 2012, a dog may remain in the Beginner Novice B Class until the handler believes the dog is ready to enter another level class. Lastly, we know that parents have a lot of choices for their children to participate in multiple activities these days. The AKC has approved that clubs may offer a reduced entry fee for Junior Handlers in their obedience, rally, tracking and agility events effective for events applied for on or after January 1, A Junior must have an AKC Junior Handler Number and is defined as anyone under 18 years of age on the first day of the event. Please remember to encourage new exhibitors, especially juniors to participate in our sports; they are the future of the sports we love so much. Sincerely, Pamela Manaton Director of Obedience, Rally & Tracking

7 Nosework Stuff by Jean Baumann It has been eight months since our hide and seek class first began and all our students are doing great. Many of them are ready to be tested on Birch odor in August at an O.R.T. (odor recognition test) trial. They should do well. It sure has been interesting on the different places and on things we have been putting the hides in. One night we were putting hides in the ground and on signs and all the dogs did wonderful. It is so nice to actually see how the dogs figure out where the hide is. It s like a light bulb has turned on in their heads, when they whip their heads towards the hide when they get a whiff of Birch. On another training night we put a hide in a water bowl. We had four bowls filled with water, and only one had the odor in it. Our students were very skeptical at first, but when they saw their dogs actually locate the bowl, and I explained how the odor would rise to the surface, they were amazed and none of the dogs drank any of the water. Moving pinwheels were another one of our interesting hides. We turned the fan on the nine pinwheels taped to the fence, but that sure didn t stop the dogs from finding the one with the hide on it. On July 7th, three of our students plus Sandy Lewandowski and I had entered a MOCK nosework trial. I should say it was interesting. This gave our students a chance to see what dogs have to do in a trial type setting, and of course, the mistakes WE as handlers made. None of us passed all four elements, but some of us were close. I think it was a valuable lesson learned. More Nosework trials and seminars are coming up and mini seminars on certain elements of nosework. I encourage our students to learn as much as they can by attending these upcoming events. We try to keep it simple, but challenging, for the dogs at times. Our students are learning how to READ their dogs, and know when they have found the hide and of course the dog gets rewarded, rewarded, rewarded. More challenging hides are coming up for the dogs and HEY!!! If anyone is interested in watching the class, just come on down on Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. We would love to have you come and watch what our sniffing dogs can do. Indy and I competed in our first mock Nosework 1 Trial. We both got to experience searching in a completely new environment. The first phase was the room search. It was a very small and cluttered room. Indy never did lock onto the odor and we did not pass this phase. The next was the container search. Indy and I completed this task in 7.25 seconds. The next area was the vehicle search. There were 2 old trucks and a trailer in a garage area. Indy completed this task as the fastest dog for the afternoon group. We then went outside for the exterior search. Indy completed this task quickly. Overall, 3 out of 4 was not bad for our first nosework trial. Indy and I will begin to compete for real after August 1 st.
