Poudre Community Academy OCTOBER 2017 Principal s Message Dear PCA Community, PAGE 1 Well the year is flying by and we have already completed the first quarter! We will be celebrating our students from 1 st quarter soon that achieved Honor Roll, Deans List, and Perfect Attendance. Great job to all of these students. Look for the list of names in our next newsletter. To start the new quarter we welcomed 12 new students. We are definitely at capacity for our site but hate turning people away. We only wish that we could accommodate everyone that is looking to be a part of our community but we will look at accepting more students at the semester. Please join me in welcoming our new community members. As always please contact us with any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Troy Krotz Principal Advertising in this newsletter does not imply endorsement by Poudre School District.
PAGE 2 PCA Wish List At PCA we do not issue supply lists for school or charge any fees. We will continue that policy but we also have a need for some items that would help around the school. We are asking for donations of the following items: Composition notebooks Spiral notebooks Reams of white copy paper Hand Sanitizer and Kleenex Any items that can be donated would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!! Attendance Please remember our attendance policy at PCA. It is very important that all absences be communicated with the front office. You can contact Melissa Sugar at or Rita at if your child is going to be absent. All absences must be excused within 48 hours. Unexcused absences can cause your child to be removed from the day program and placed in credit recovery. Please refer to the attendance policy in this newsletter or the student handbook found on our website. Please work with us to improve attendance. Raiders Win Their First Game This Season By Kalob The first game of the season for the Oakland Raiders was a great game against the Titans at the Titans home field. Oakland got the first touchdown. Carr through the ball to Lynch and he SCORED! The Raiders won 26 to 16. Carr is just recovering from a broken leg and he is getting better with his best man Lynch. By the end of the game, the Raiders beat the Titans 26 to 16. At the end of the game everyone shook hands and celebrated, the coaches had a nice talk and are happy with the first game scores.

Make this birthday a great one, we wish you the best! Animals During the Hurricane By Kandi Animal shelters during the hurricane have suffered almost as much as the people in Florida. The shelters are over filling with animals, and some are euthanizing them too make room for pets found or surrendered. Animals all over Florida have been tied up and left to survive on their own. Most owners don t surrender their animals to shelters or even bother to take them to a safe space, they tie them up all alone and abandon them. I believe that over all these animals do not deserve this amount of abuse, and the owners shouldn t have left them to die. I also believe that if the dogs owners can be located they should not be returned because, it says a lot about someone s character. I am hoping that in some way, we as a school community can figure out a way to help all these animals affected during this time.
PAGE 4 Hurricanes As we all know, 2 major Hurricanes hit the U.S in a 2 week time period. The first Hurricane, named Harvey, hit Texas as a slow mover yet powerful. The second Hurricane, called Irma hit south florida and moved quickly but made the equivalent amount of damage in a short amount of time. Hurricane #3 Jose tried to make it into the U.S but because of strict border laws it was unable to get into the U.S. Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Texas and with it came a record amount of flooding rain and Category 4 strength Wind. The damage done by this storm is estimated at over 40 billion dollars, making it more damaging than Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Irma was the second Hurricane to hit the U.S. Hurricane Irma hit Puerto Rico, the Carribean islands, Cuba, and Florida. The Hurricane hit at Category 5 strength bringing with it flooding rains, dangerous storm surge, and extremely strong winds reaching up to 185 mph at some points. Puerto Rico and many more islands are almost unrecognizable. Damage estimates from this storm have not been made yet. The damage from these Hurricanes has been done but the repair will take years. In other news, Hurricane Jose and Trump go to war over Jose s plans to enter the U.S.

PAGE 6 Las Vegas By Janaya Keller On October 3rd 2017, the President of the United States was stating his opinion on the very recent Las Vegas shooting. His exact words, according to The Washington Post were We have a tragedy, and what happened in Las Vegas is in many ways a miracle. We ll be talking about gun laws as time goes by. At least 59 people were killed and more than 500 people were injured when 64 year old, Stephen Paddock opened fire on a country music festival out of a window from the 32nd floor of a hotel. He was firing for about ten minutes when the concertgoers started to panic trying to leave the scene. After multiple rounds being shot, gun smoke filled the hotel suite and set the fire alarm off, a SWAT team swarmed in on Stephen in about 20 minutes, as they closed in he commit suicide. Do you think in anyway this was a miracle? Why do you think Trump would say this? Huge Catfish Caught in Fort Collins By Arek Ehmsen This weekend, the Fort Collins record catfish was caught at City Park Lake on the south-east side, by Ethan Young. Ethan and his friends Arek, Declan, and Esteban were illegally fishing off the island at the lake. They were using chicken liver on treble hooks and casted about 30 feet towards the bubbler. Suddenly, as Ethan and his friends were messing around with the ducks, Ethan s rod takes off towards the lake without little warning from a nibble. Grabbing it just in time, the fish was hooked, and the fight was on. Finally, after about a 20-minute fight, the fish was landed and it was nothing short of a monster. Weighing in at 20 pounds it was easily the largest fish caught out of the lake. After Ethan caught that record fish, more and more record catfish are being caught on the daily.
PAGE 7 Picture of the Day By Justine Montoya The picture I chose for picture of the day is a picture of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. On October 3rd, 2017, the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building fell dark in honor of the Las Vegas victims. At least 59 people died and 527 others were injured after Stephen Paddock opened fire from his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay resort and casino. Both iconic landmarks went dark last night as the world sway from the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. This was the picture of the day because it had a really big impact not only on Las Vegas, but on the world. Service Learning: Dog Rescue By Kandi This week, with the ADP (Animal Dept. Project) there are some new changes. Last time we prepared for one of their adoption events, also got to give the dogs a bath. Chappy, one of their disabled dogs, finally got his wheelchair! He was so happy to be moving around. Also, we helped waterproof some old dog houses along with cleaning kennels. Volunteering at the Animal Dept. Project has been so much fun and a great learning experience.
