2 P.H.A.R.M Dog Pets Helping Agriculture in Rural Missouri A program to assist farmers with disabilities, and their families, through the use of Service and Herding Dogs

3 My Fellow Presenters: Alda Owen- My little spitfire farmer. Alda and her husband Rick will share their story later in the presentation. Bruce Trammell-He s my walking billboard. Bruce and his wife Linda will share their story as well. Chris Allenbrand will not speak but without his continual help and support we wouldn t be here.

4 The PHARM Dog Project Review: Small start-up grant received in 2005 Institute for Human Development at University of MO Kansas City Funding from a business entrepreneurial grant The director liked the idea! The PHARM Dog idea becomes a reality! Volunteers and donations support the program

8 Media & Other Interests American Chronic Pain Association s newsletter Media Day was held for first PHARM dog placement for a human interest story in the Missouri Ruralist s October 2009 edition. Televised on local TV station Rural Missouri, Extension publications, The Progressive Farmer and The Kennel Spotlight. Local groups American Stock Dog Association Ag Lifestyles on RFD TV and Animal Planet Over 260 responses with 13 farmers on the waiting list initially. Children s book Fox 4 News Kansas City, Springfield, & Columbia, MO YouTube-PHARM Videos CBS in Washington, D.C.

10 Bobby and Wendy Miller Bobby and Wendy Miller have donated their time and training talents to the program. Their border collie, Zag, was donated along with 6 puppies that will be trained for a farmer in need of a dog in More have been donated since then.

18 Dennis-Don-Bowdrie Dennis received the first PHARM Dog placed in the summer of Roy was injured and passed away in This is Bowdrie and he is an 8 year old red & white Border Collie. He was placed with Dennis in October of Bowdrie works for Dennis in the farrowing house now and is a big help with sorting.

19 Bobby & Duke-Future PHARM Dog Duke was donated to the project by a kind family that found him wandering on the street when they went on their daily walk. He had never seen livestock before. At one of our demos at a local Tractor Supply Co. store Duke saw sheep and he was hooked. Duke is currently being trained in Iowa and will be placed in late May 2013.

20 Alda s Story: Alda received her pup in Our trainer, Bobby Miller, works with Alda and her husband Rick to teach proper commands. They have owned stock dogs before so they knew how they could work. PHARM works together with the farmers to make sure they feel comfortable with what they have learned and the lines are always open to call when needed. Sweet Baby Jo has it made with Alda & Rick!

22 Demo Day at TSC

23 Costs & Training Time Worked with VR to help pay for training of dogs. Won t pay for animal. If farmers don t qualify for VR or RSB services etc a Border Collie will be given for a donation. Dogs trained for service skills $5000 currently. Money for service dogs goes to GDLR. I do follow up on the farm with service dogs. BC training time-1 yr. old-6 to 9 months started with skills. More trainings time is always better & we want the right fit. Service animals-1 year-depends on maturity level and skill level.

24 Bruce s Story: Odie was 18 months old when he was placed in March He was saved from a shelter and went through the Greater Dayton Lab Rescue in Ohio. He was not wanted and it s so hard to imagine why someone would pass on such a great animal but he s where he s met to be. When Bruce saw Odie for the first time he said to me, Jackie, it s like I m falling in love all over again!

31 Jim & Dixon Dixon was an owner surrender and also went through the Greater Dayton Lab Rescue program. He was 3 years old when he was placed in August of Jim has 4 Great Pyrenees, 1 Schnauzer, 2 deer, alpacas, mini horses, mini Herfords, and mini donkeys he had to adjust to quickly. He passed with flying colors! Only one tormentor and that was the house cat. Jim reports that they have learned to share their space.
