Breed Standards Update Report by Jenny Buckingham The Breed Standard Committee has been slowly gathering information about the non BRC breeds that exhibitors are showing or developing. We have created a booklet that has all these Breed Standards in it so that everyone is using the same standard and so that judges know what to judge the Breeds in Development by. This booklet contains the non BRC breeds currently being shown such as the Jersey Woolly. It also contains Breeds that we believe people are working on in the hope that they can eventually be standardised. While waiting for Standardisation these breeds can be shown in Unstandardised or Breed in Development classes. If we discover more breeds that people are developing, or if someone applies for another Breed that will also be included. This booklet can be downloaded from the ANRCI Website Documents Page. The Breed Standard Committee will now develop the process that breeders will need to go through to have the rabbit standardised. This will be done in consultation from the breeders and other experienced Breeders and Judges. If you have any questions please contact the moderator of this group - Alicia Balzan. Breed Standards Update Report by Steph McClintock I joined ANRCI as a Victorian state rep late last year and shortly after was appointed moderator of the judges subcommittee. To be a part of this committee is both an honour and privilage I look forward to working with you all. At the moment the main focus is on constructing the ANRCI judges panel and implimenting some baseline requirements for judges training across affiliated clubs. At present we are in the final stages of putting together the panel. We have been careful in our approach as we wish to acklowledge all qualified judges irrespective of which club or state they trained with. Once finalized the details will be published soon. In terms of the minimum requirements for judges training, it is a interesting undertaking as clubs have had vastly different approaches. We acknowledge that judges training is very important for the future of the rabbit fancy. Therefore the committee is keen to work with clubs to introduce some consistency and ensure trainees have the best opportunity to become great judges. We are currently working through this process and will keep members updated of our progress. Input from members is welcome and if you require clarification on any aspects please contact me. Overall it's proving to be an exciting time to be involved in the rabbit fancy. 3

A Beginners Guide: How Many Breeds is too many? By Simon Whincup-Grindey For sometime now I have asked myself, how many breeds are too many breeds to keep. Over the past twelve years I have gained a great deal of experience, made a lot of mistakes and listened to a lot of people, something which every beginner will go through at some point during their time in the fancy. It s the only way we learn, in my opinion. The aim of this article is to help beginners learn from my experiences in the fancy, and also become aware of some important points to consider when deciding what breed(s) to keep. When I first started in the fancy, I started with Dwarf Lops. Shortly after I decided to keep Cashmere Lops and Squirrels (Rare Variety Fur breed), along with Miniature Lops and Dutch. But I always concentrated on Dwarf Lops and latterly on Cashmere Lops. For a short time I even kept German Lops and a few Polish. I never had the best start in the fancy, I tried to buy everything and thought I could put any two rabbits together and breed the next BiS winner. What a mistake to make!. I quickly learnt that buying everything and breeding anything, was not the way to do it. Fortunately, I was lucky to be showed the path of righteousness and was provided with a good start in Dwarf Lop breeding stock and good advice from a variety of helpful people. The one thing I learnt as years went on was that in order to enjoy my hobby, I had to breed the best to get the best. After a year and a half break from rabbits, I decided to keep rabbits once again and met up with my old friends at the London Championship Show. I straightaway went back into the Cashmere Lop, my favourite breed and a breed that set a challenge for any exhibitor. I also took on a few miniature lops, if you want to show any long-haired breed, you should always be prepared to keep a few short-haired rabbits to back up the dry period when your long-haired rabbits go into a terrible moult and you ve nothing to show. Over the past five years, I have developed my Cashmere Lop line with the help of very good friends, and the assistance of some good outcrosses to improve lines. I have improved my Cashmere Lops to the extent that nowadays, I know I can put two together and have at least one good un in a litter for the next show year. Occasionally, I find a fault in the line and that drives me up the wall, and straight away I seek to improve that fault using whatever rabbit I can find that does not have same the fault (usually achieved by raiding the shed of Marion Chamberlain!). To this end, I have been fortunate enough to win many Best of Breeds, Challenge Certificates and even s with my own-bred stock in the Cashmere breed. Sadly today the Cashmere does still have some way to go, until it continually achieves high-status in open competition!. As well as the Cashmere Lop, I keep s, French Lops and a few Polish. Now I hear you say, how can you concentrate on keeping that many breeds?. There are many sides to this argument, I agree that if you want to succeed you should really just concentrate on the one breed. But when you have a passion for so many breeds, if you are strict enough with yourself and have the space you can focus on a number of breeds. This is however only achievable by a few simple rules. Rule 1: Know your breed standard! To concentrate and produce the best, you need to know your breed standards and at the same time know and learn the line(s) you are breeding from. You must be able to pick out that special one at a young age, approximately four weeks and be able to identify what qualities that rabbit will possess as an adult. When I look at a four week old baby lop, I expect to be looking at a miniature of the adult that it will turn into. With a lop, I namely look for good rounded ears, without any folds. I am looking for good indication of strong bone structure, broad head with a broad muzzle, nicely rounded body and fair indication that there will be some width of shoulder in the final version. In some instances I don t deny, I (and no doubt others) make the mistake and pick the wrong one. But in 95% of cases, I have been fortunate enough to choose a good un and go on to do fairly well with a rabbit at least at local shows, sometimes national and championship competition. Rule 2: Be strict in what you keep! Once you have got to know your breed standard, and assess your youngsters at a young age choosing what you are going to keep. You should not be tempted to keep a whole litter, because you cant choose. In any litter there will always be at least one with a fault, and those are the ones that you move on to another home. People who know me well, and know my selection process, know that it is not unknown for me to sometimes look at a litter and say I don t like any of them. Yet, the people who are looking at the litter with me, will find one that they like and try to make me change my mind to keep the one they have chosen. I guess I am like this, because I know I have a strict policy on how many hutches I allocate to each breed, and how many rabbits I can sensibly look after and give time to. This is a very important thing to always consider. It is always important in my opinion to get a mentor in the breed(s) you decide to keep and get them in regularly to help you look through your stock and litters and re-home or sell what you don t want to keep, or more importantly what isn t going to help your breeding programme anymore. 4

Rule 3: Hutch allocation This is purely a personal preference. For guidance however, I work on the following principal. I allocate around fifteen hutches (maximum) to my Cashmere Lops, I know that I can sensibly look after, groom and clean out that many Cashmere Lops. I do have a ratio of more bucks than does, this is purely from a point of view that if I have less does I am not tempted to breed more and end with a lot of babies I cannot care for. I breed around two to three litters of Cashmeres per year, out of these two or three litters I usually keep no more than two babies to show and develop for the forthcoming year. In my Miniature Lops I allocate ten hutches, and breed as many litters as suits me per year, I am selective on what I keep and again it is not unknown for me to dismiss a whole litter because something exceptional doesn t stand out, I know the competition in the is high and therefore to be in with a chance of winning you have to be prepared to keep the very best from a litter. The French Lops have an allocation of eight hutches, but I only breed one or two litters per year and usually keep one per litter. Rule 4: Know your Competition, a point I raise above which I believe is very valid is, that if you want to enjoy your hobby, but also do well in the competition stakes, you need to know your competition. It is important to become friendly with fellow fanciers who keep the same breeds as you. This has a number of beneficial effects; a) You get to possibly help each other over time with breeding stock and outcrosses, which benefits all concerned; b) You get a second opinion on your stock from somebody else who is hopefully experienced in the breed, and over time with your experience building up, you can offer them your advice on their stock if they want it. It is important to also look round the show tables and see what judges consistently pick out, this has a couple of beneficial effects as Continued... well; a) you get to learn what individual judges look for in certain breeds, and b) you get an idea of what you should be looking for in your rabbits. Rule 5: Interpreting the breed standard. What you must remember is that judges interpret the breed standard in various ways, and as some longer serving fanciers will have noticed, with the differing interpretation of standards over the years, breeds change in their appearance, sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad. Some months ago, Phil Batey covered a worthy point in an article, in which he referred to the Dwarf Lop. Historical reading and research suggests to me that back in the 60 s/70 s when the Dwarf Lop was being imported, it was a smaller rabbit than we see today, and also photos from books such as Geoff Russell s Fanciers guide to the Lop Rabbit shows the Dwarf Lop as a much racier typed rabbit than we see today. Conclusion To conclude, the aim of this article is to help people decide how many breeds is too many to keep, and also some learning points for generally keeping rabbits, which I have obviously outlined in the so called rules above. The one thing you will notice in my article is that at times, I have gone off the boil a bit in covering the main subject of this article, but I hope this helps those who read it. It is always worthy of noting, that in this article I have strongly supported the fact of getting to be friends with other people in the breed(s) you intend to breed and show. The fancy is not only a hobby, but also a great way of developing friendships not only in the breeds you keep, but in across the board. 5

Breed History: English Angora Angora rabbits have been documented since Roman times. The long hair gene is one that shows itself regularly in many types of animal as can be seen in cats, dogs, guinea pigs etc. Usually this longhair mutation would not fair well in the wild, the coat would become saturated and matted leading to illness and death. As a captive bred animal however the long haired animal is highly prized and developed into the extremes of coat that we see today ie: the Persian cat, Afghan Hound, Peruvian Guinea-Pig etc. The original long hair rabbit would probably have a coat like that of the Swiss Fox or Cashmere lop that we see today. The coat is still predominantly guard hair, the long, silky, harder, waterproof hair that makes a normal rabbits top coat. The wool is the undercoat, shorter on a normal rabbit to act as insulation. The Angora is unusual in that the gene affects the undercoat growth, producing a rabbit that has more undercoat (wool) than top coat. This rabbit would be useless in the wild, (have you ever seen a wet Angora?) but immediately was taken up as a fibre animal by the Romans who, we believe, collected and spun the wool, as far back as 100BC. The earliest reports of the domestication of rabbits, ie: being captive bred for meat, fur and wool were of this period. Why Angora? This is slightly controversial but once again there is documentation from around 1500, Henry VIII s reign that Long haired/wooled rabbits were highly regarded at that time in England. There was even a law in place banning the sale and export of such to foreign lands. The animal was described as the English Silk Hare and its product was used in clothing manufacture, we can ascertain that this then was a wool producing animal. England at that time was the World domination in western trade with ships trading all over the known World. There is documented proof that the long haired rabbit was traded in France in 1723 by English Sailors. Due to the law preventing the export of the English Silk Hare it is believed that animals were smuggled out of England and sold in far away ports secretly, probably long before this. The long haired rabbit thus travelled throughout Europe reaching Turkey and their trade centre Ankara, formally known as Angora. Ankara was the home of the Angora goat and so the long haired rabbit which had a coat not dissimilar to the Mohair producing goat took on the name Angora Rabbit. It is ironic that it would finally arrive back in England with its new more exotic name. In reality there were probably different forms of the long haired gene as there are today. The English Angora as we know it presents the growth gene in its full glory with the massive undercoat and little guard hair (top coat). Guard hairs are still present though, approx 1-5% of the total coat, known today as the tips, highly prized on show animals and extremely difficult not to lose during the grooming process! The wool is light, fine, silky but with a warm wool handle. The coat should snowball the animal, producing a round effect achieved by the density of coat and the warmth and weight of the fibre. Next Page/ 7

Continued... The French Angora has more guard hair that has been bred to be very long and silky, its coat is very fine and silky and naturally falls in a parting on the animal. They have no head furnishings or ear tassels. The coat is easier to maintain, being fairly mat free. German and Giant Angoras are basically English Angoras who have been selectively bred to produce more wool per animal. They are larger and their wool has a slightly heavy feel and is less prone to matting. The Satin Angora is a French/Satin mix with a satinised look to the wool giving it an incredible shine. So we see that the Angora was being bred all over Europe in its many forms as far back as 100BC. Its modern history and development really started to gain pace around the 18 th. Century when clothing manufacturers took up the Fibre as it was cheap to produce but offered supreme luxury. There is documentation and even drawings showing an animal not dissimilar to the rabbit we have today being used to supply wool. This is a copper plate produced in 1754 showing the beginnings of the modern day Angora. free.it wasn t until the 20 th. century when the commercial Angora took flight with Germany leading the field. There are reports of around thousand animals being kept for wool production at the turn of the century. The Germans were fastidious with their records and over time produced an animal that once produced 150g of wool a year to one that now produces around 1-2kg of wool from 4 shearings a year, rightly termed the German Angora. The war brought these big Angora Wool producers to a halt and post war many smaller enterprises sprouted. China became interested in the Angora and there are reports of 30,000 animals being exported to China from Frankfurt. Today they are the biggest producer of Angora fibre supplying 95% of the worlds raw Angora Fibre from an estimated 3 million animals. No one can compete with the Chinese production but there are producers in Chile, Argentina, India and Germany still have a fair few producers on a smaller scale. The English Angora has always been a pet and exhibition animal highly prized for its fine silky wool, lovely nature and fairy tale appearance. It has its hardened supporters here in the UK that maintain its quality and it is a regular best Fancy and winner. The first UK club was the Universal Angora Club founded in 1907, The Southern Angora Club formed as a second club in 1920, they amalgamated into the National Angora Club in 1963 it presently caters for the breed in the UK, details in the showing section. 9 by Allan Harvey Baby Bellies maximum amount of milk she will produce. After that, the supply begins to decline as the babies start to nibble on solid food. After the recent discussions we have been seeing I thought I would pen some detailed info on the issue. You may know already that baby bunnies between the ages of four and seven weeks are vulnerable to enteritis and are more likely to die than a three-week old from intestinal problems. But do you know exactly why? If not, read on. We're going to talk about what goes on in that baby bunny belly. Baby rabbits are quite unique in that they have no living microorganisms in their stomach or intestines. They start off life with a ph of 5-6 and are protected by the special milk oil in rabbit milk. Rabbit milk oil has an anti-microbial property. No other animal's milk has this property. This is one reason why I've never bothered to feed babies a substitute milk (since my first litters when I was panicking because I never saw her feed the babies). Nothing can substitute for rabbit milk. (That's not to say that orphans cannot be fed and live, it's just to say that the return on investment of time is poor.) For the first three weeks, nothing changes except the quantity of milk the babies ingest. At three weeks, the doe is producing the At this point, the ph starts to decline in the stomach. Now we start to enter the vulnerable zone. The ph has not gotten down to the protective 1-2 that it will eventually have. That level has its own anti-microbial properties. The milk oil, with its protective properties, is declining. As the milk oil declines, the normal flora starts to colonize, if everything goes well. But basically, the bunnies are working without a net during the period between full milk oil protection and full 1-2 ph/colonized flora protection. Stress, lack of inoculation of microorganisms (normally from consuming cecotrophes from a healthy dam), and an inappropriate diet can tip the balance in favour of infective organisms instead. Between six and seven weeks, the bunnies typically will be fully weaned (though we've known some dams to continue to nurse occasionally for far longer). Between seven and eight weeks, the ph should have levelled out around 1 to 2 and feed consumption begins to level out as well. It is tempting to breathe a sigh of relief when bunnies make it to eight weeks. They have accomplished something important, after all. Of course, stress, diet, and other illnesses can still bring on enteritis in the future, but at least that baby bunny made it through the first danger zone of bunny life. 9
