2 How to Enter Items in the Fairfax County 4-H Fair A Quick-Guide 1. Read the Catalog for departments and classes to enter, as well as rules pertaining to entering exhibits. 2. Pre-register your entries in Blue Ribbon Online - 3. Bring your entries to the Fairfax County 4-H Fair Exhibit drop off: Thursday, August 2, 3-6 PM, 4-H Building Friday, August 3, 3-6 PM, 4-H Building 4. Come to the fair Saturday or Sunday to see how your entry did! Pick up all exhibits by 4 PM on Sunday, August 5, 2018 A few items of note: 1. Entries will be judged according to the rules found in this catalog. All entries that do not adhere to the rules may be docked in their scoring. 2. All results are at the judge s discretion, all decisions are final 3. For entries in the Vegetables, Floriculture and Foods and Nutrition Department, it is highly advised you do NOT bring your entries on Thursday. Please bring them to the Friday exhibit drop off. 4. Premiums will only be handed out by the 4-H Agent, Krystal Williams. If Krystal is not able to be at Fair, then Premiums will be distributed at Achievement Night in November. 4 General Rules 1. Open (non-4-h) entries are available in all departments except Livestock, Rabbit/Cavy, and Horse for anyone who is not a 4-H member or has not been enrolled in 4-H for 30 days prior to the Fair (Wednesday, July 4, 2018). Open entries will be awarded ribbons, but will not be awarded premiums. They can compete for the champion ribbon in their age category. 2. Open Entries begin on page 43 following the 4-H Entries 3. A 4-H member eligible to receive premiums from the Fair must be enrolled on Fairfax County 4-H Online club at least 30 days prior to the Fair (Wednesday, July 4, 2018) and be age 9 to 18 as of September 30 of the current year. 4. No project may be entered in the 4-H Fair which has been judged at a previous 4-H Fair, except for continuing projects. Items must have been made or completed since the last 4-H Fair. 5. Only one item can be entered per lot except where specified in individual departments. Two identical items made by a 4-H member may not be entered in two lots of the same department. The advisor and superintendent(s) have discretion to accept or not accept entries. 6. Joint entries (made by two or more youth) may be entered in any lot, but must be specified as a group project on the entry card. 7. The Fairfax 4-H County Council, Park Staff, or Extension Staff shall not be responsible for personal injuries, property damage, or loss of property at the Fair or on the fairgrounds. Entering Your Exhibit 1. Check the rules of the specific department you wish to enter. 2. Make sure you are looking at the appropriate section of the 4-H Fair Catalog. 4-H Entries (for registered 4-H members) can be found on pages 4-42 and all Open Entries can be found on pages Pre-register your entry online at: If you have any problems with submitting, online entries contact krystal.williams@fairfaxcounty.gov. 4. Stationary Exhibits: Bring to Frying Pan Farm Park on Thursday, August 2, 2018 from 3PM to 6PM or Friday, August 3 from 3PM to 6PM. All exhibits come to the 4-H Barn for check in. 5. Animal Exhibits: To be in place by 7PM on Friday unless otherwise specified in individual departments. No unauthorized personnel will be allowed in the exhibit area. All exhibitors are responsible for the behavior and care of their animals at all times. 6. After judging, all exhibits shall remain in place for observation by the public until 4:30 PM on Sunday. All exhibits must be picked up by 4 PM on Sunday. 7. Premium distribution will take place Sunday, August 5 from 2PM 4PM. Premiums are only issued to official Fairfax County 4-H members, and those open (non-4-h) members who are champion in their age division. Special Awards 1. The Larry Blair Memorial Award will be awarded to one 4-H member who has the highest participation in the fair, measured by the number of entries. The recipient of this award will receive a $49 Cash Award, a Scholarship to a 4-H Event of their choosing (up to $100) and a plaque. 2. Club Exhibit Participation Award: Fairfax County 4-H will be sponsoring a $100 Mini-Grant award this year! The club with the highest percentage of members exhibiting in the 4-H Fair will be recognized by receiving this special gift. To be eligible, the club must be active in countywide events during the year, and have a charter on file. 3. Club Fair Supporter Award: Fairfax County 4-H will be sponsoring a Mini Grant of $100 to the first place recipient as well as a $50 Mini-Grant to the second place recipient. For each member that attends a Fairboard meeting, a club will receive the respective points. For each member who attends fair setup or cleanup, the respective clubs will receives points. For each member that is a superintendent, the respective club will receive points. To be eligible, the club must be active in countywide events during the year, and have a charter on file. 4. An Outstanding 4-H Fair Supporter Award will be presented to one 4-H Junior, Intermediate, and Senior member as determined by letters of nomination by 4-H leaders or members. This award is presented at the Annual 4-H Achievement Night. 2 PAGE

5 Judging Premiums and Stationary Exhibits 1. Entries will be submitted in the following age divisions, regardless of 4-H enrollment: a. Cloverbud Aged 5-8 (as of 9/30/18) b. Junior - Aged 9-11 (As of 9/30/18) c. Intermediate Aged (As of 9/30/18) d. Senior - Aged (As of 9/30/18) e. Adult - Aged 19 (as of 9/30/18) 2. Cloverbud Entries will only receive Cloverbud ribbons, and will not receive a premium or Grand Champion Ribbon. 3. All stationary entries will be judged using the Danish system. Each entry is judged on its own merit, not in competition with other projects. All stationary entries will receive either a blue, red, or white ribbon. 4. The premiums paid are different for each department and are indicated in the department rules in (blue, red, white) order. Premiums are paid to 4-H members only, with the exception of Champion open entries who receive a $5.00 premium. 5. Champion rosettes are awarded to the top Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Adult exhibit in each department as determined by the judges. Reserve Champion rosettes may be awarded at the judges discretion. Only champion winners will receive a $5.00 premium. 6. 6 DEPARTMENT A 4-H HORSE As voted on by members of the Fairfax County 4-H Program, there will be no riding competition for the Horse Show during the 2018 Fairfax County 4-H Fair. Instead, please join us for another year of our wonderful Horse Demonstrations! CLASS A EDUCATIONAL DEMONSTRATION Educational Demonstration - An Educational Demonstration is a presentation of youth s knowledge and skills in the Horse Project. This demonstration is done in a way that is most comfortable for youth members. Demonstrations can be accomplished using props, posters, or media presentation DEPARTMENT B 4-H LIVESTOCK DEPARTMENT RULES 1. The Livestock Department is open to registered Hoofers & Heifers 4-H Club Members. 4-H members must be enrolled in the Hoofers & Heifers 4-H Club prior to December 31 st, 2017, attend a minimum of three-quarters of the regular club meetings, participate in at least once club service project, and participate in one of Frying Pan Farm Park s events. 2. Participants must pre-register using the online registration system as a livestock show participant. 3. Proper showing attire must be worn in the rings at all times. 4. Judging will be done and ribbons and prize money (if authorized by the Fair Board) will be awarded on the 1st through 5th place system. Appropriate rosettes and/or trophies will be awarded in the championship classes. 5. If there is only one animal shown in a class, the animal shall be awarded the first place ribbon (and prize money if authorized) if the animal is deemed worthy of the same by the official judge. 6. Neither the Show Committee nor the Fairfax County 4-H Fair and Frying Pan Farm Park Farm Show will be responsible for any accident or injury to the person or property of an exhibitor, spectator, attendant or other person. The exhibitor agrees to indemnify the show and Fairfax County 4-H Fair and Frying Pan Farm Park Farm Show against any claim or liability for damage caused by her/him or her/his animal. 7. All livestock equipment must be kept in trunks and designated areas. 8. Premiums paid on classes will be 1st place - $5.00, 2nd place - $4.00, 3rd place - $3.00, 4th place - $2.00, and 5th place - $1.00. Premiums will be paid to 4-H member in Showmanship classes. Other premiums will be paid to club facilitating care of animal shown. 9. There will be separate classes for showmanship judging for Dairy Heifer/Cow, Sheep, Goat, Swine and Beef. Your showmanship animal must be entered in the fair. General Rules apply to this department, except that exhibitors may enter more than one entry per class. 2. All classes are open to 4-H members participating in a Rabbit Project Club. 3. Classes are not divided by age of exhibitor and are open to ages 9-18, based on age on September 30 of the current year. 4. All rabbits and cavies must be validated by Monday, May 7, All entries are expected to be in cages by 8:00 AM Saturday and remain on exhibit until 5:00 PM Sunday. Exceptions may be made only by Department Superintendents. 6. All entries must be free of disease. Infected rabbits and cavies will not be accepted for show. 7. All entries must be at least 3 months of age. 8. Do not bring female rabbits or cavies, which are expected to kindle in the next few days. 9. Owners of animals are responsible for the feeding and watering of their rabbits and cavies. Fair personnel will not feed your rabbits or cavies. 10. Owners must leave name and phone number to be reached in case of emergency. 11. Due care will be taken of all animals, but the Fair cannot assume responsibility for fire, theft, or accidents of nature. RABBIT AND CAVY SHOW RULES 1. Rabbit and cavy classes are as determined by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Each breed must adhere to its own standard of age grouping, weight, and breed perfection. A look-alike class will be offered for all ARBA Standard Breeds. 2. Only youth members are allowed to carry rabbits/cavies to the judging table. 3. Each breed of rabbit and cavy will be judged as a separate class. 4. Registration is required for all rabbits and cavies. 5. Rosettes will be awarded for the Best of Breed and Best Opposite Sex in each breed of rabbit and cavy, represented at the show by three or more entries. The rosette breeds will be posted in the department prior to the Judging Show. 6. Six Class rabbits will be placed in their age category according to ARBA Standards as follows: Senior & 8 months of age and over Intermediate & 6 to 8 months of age Junior & 3 to 6 months of age Note: Juniors or Intermediates, which exceed maximum breed weight limits, may be shown in higher age classifications. No animal may be shown in a lower age classification than its true age, with the exception of Checkered Giants and Flemish Giants, in which case no animal may be shown in a higher age classification than its true age, and no animal may be shown in a lower age classification than its true age. 6 PAGE

Four Class rabbits will be placed in their age category according to ARBA Standards as follows: Senior & 6 months of age and over Junior & 3 to 6 months of age Note: Juniors exceeding maximum class weight may be shown in higher age classification. No animal may be shown in a lower age classification than its true age. The exception to this rule is the American Fuzzy Lop, Britannia Petite, Holland Lop, Jersey Wooly, and the Mini Lop, in which case no animal may be shown in a higher age classification than its true age and no animal may be shown in a lower age classification than its true age. 8. All cavies will be placed in their age/weight category according to ARBA Standards as follows: Senior Boars & Sows 6 months of age and over, or weight over 32 ounces Intermediate Boars & Sows Up to 6 months of age, or weight over 22 ounces; maximum weight of 32 ounces Junior Boars & Sows Up to 4 months of age, minimum weight 12 ounces; maximum weight 22 ounces 9. There will be separate classes for showmanship judging for rabbits and cavies. Your showmanship animal must be entered in the fair.
